[Q] [NEED HELP] Samsung Galaxy S NOT Recognized by Windows 7 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

[FIXED] thanks guys
When I connect my Samsung Galaxy S, the computer doesn't do ANYTHING (it doesn't recognize that anything has been connected), and the SGS doesn't even recognize that it's connected to anything. All the phone does is charge...not even a notification drop down prompts me to enter USB mass storage or charge etc. I've factory reset the phone many times (plugged & unplugged), and nothing seems to fix it. I can't find my SGS in the Device manager to reinstall drivers either.
I am running Windows 7 64bit on a Sony Vaio, if that helps.
I've searched tons of sites & forums and none seems to have a working solution...Any ideas/fixes?

I think I found the problem I was having...I was using a Rocketfish CHARGING cable, and although it looks like a USB cable (it connects to the computer via usb), it does nothing but charge...so I took off the micro usb adapter that affixed onto the mini usb charging cable and re-affixed it onto a random mini usb cable I had lying around. And now it connects to the computer! I can now use all the other tutorials fixing the generic "usb driver not installed properly" problem.

UPDATE: I was following the tutorial on http://theunlockr.com/2009/12/02/how-to-root-the-samsung-behold-2-samsung-galaxy/ but when I get to the fastboot part, my phone won't boot into fastboot.... Can anyone help?

download 64-bit drivers here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
turn on usb-debugging mode in settings. you have to manually choose to mount the volume on the SGS every time you plug it in.
should work.

you need to either install KIES, or install the drivers included in the Android SDK

I got my phone to connect & be recognized by my computer, but I can't seem to get my phone into fastboot. Can anyone tell me which keys to press...?

I had the exact same problem. Googled and found a forum post somewhere with the following solution:
Turn off Galaxy S. Connect to pc by USB. Turn on Galaxy S.
...
Yeah.
Worked for me, anyway. Ever since I did that it's been working fine even if I connect it while it's turned on.
EDIT: Gah, didn't notice you had it solved already, thought the second post was from someone else. Oh well.

Use the cable that came with your phone. I had issues with a second cable I bought for my second pc. Changed the cable back and everything was fine.

For all, there has always been a problem with sammy usb cables/ports, so when connected up to pc, always take care not to knock phone, this will become especially important when you connect to odin if you get into rom flashing

Driver Help

Note: I have searched the forums/google/youtube and done just about everything suggested.
I downloaded the SDK thinking my computer would notice the drivers ... it doesn't
I've installed, uninstalled, rebooted, power cycled, disonnected, reconnected, deleted, added etc... And Windows still does not recognize my Hero.
I don't know what to do now, as I thought I was going to just simply root and keep it moving, but I can't even get transfer contacts yet. Anybody have suggestions? Tips? Anything? I'm desperate here
Running: Vista x64
Make sure you download and install HTC Sync here and turn on USB Debugging on your phone by pressing menu, settings, applications, development, and check USB debugging. Also turn on unknown sources in the same menu in applications.

I've done this too ... multiple times
Ok, try this link and download the htc drivers for the hero. When its looking for the drivers, browse for the location yourself and point it to the drivers that you downloaded (once you extracted it)

Sigh, tried this too. Windows just keeps telling me it cant find the driver - even when I direct it to the folder I've never had this happen with any other drivers I've installed
try removing the device in device manager and remove SDK and then go back through the steps of installing htc sync plug in your phone then run SDK

Lol yea I've done that too. Maybe it's my system. I just plugged the damn thing in to my office computer and the phone recognized the USB, and on the computer I can see the mSD - none of which have happened on my system at home.
Thanks for all the help, if anybody else has suggestions feel free to keep em comin!
i have had problems with two of the four computers that I have it installed on.
both of them i think i used different versions of SYNC to get it to work but I can't remember.

I'd be happy to even get THAT far. My computer wont install drivers, my phone doesn't detect that its connected via usb, so I'm unable to mount. So there's no chance of even using SYNC yet lol. I guess I should be happy I didn't rush out to get that EVO just yet, cuz I'd kill over if I were having this problem with that phone. With the Hero, it's annoying cuz I can't transfer music or root yet.

I had a similar problem. First does you phone charge from the USB port? if not find a different USB cable. I have heard thicker is better but all the ones I have tried have charged it.
If it does charge but you can get Windows to recognize it as ADB then install PDAnet on your computer. You can find it with a google search. I got really frusturaded getting the drivers to work too, but PDAnet worked on the first try.

I use the stock USB, which does charge it via any USB connection. However I notice that when I plug it into a system at work (Windows 7) the phone recognizes the USB connection and allows me to mount [I'm adding music I sent to myself this morning to the phone via this Win7 system]. Whereas the system at home the phone doesn't even see a USB connection present, so no mounting option. (I've tried all 4 USB ports on my personal laptop)
I'll DL PDAnet either tonight or tomorrow and see how this works. Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll keep you posted.

Ok I've finally gotten the phone and computer to see each other. So I now have access to the SD card, however Vista still is not locating drivers.
Methods tried:
Installing, Uninstalling HTC Sync (various versions, new & old - including several reboots)
A tether program suggested in this thread
PDAnet
Directed Vista to folders with drivers.
Downloaded suggested drivers to Vista and pointed the system to particular folder
It's great that now I can take care of adding music etc... to the phone, but I had hopes of rooting as well, and it doesn't look like that's going to be a reality.
I'm still completely open to suggestions, and very grateful for all the assistance so far!
Since I just got this phone from asurion it's still on 1.5 would updating help? (I didn't want to update android for fear that I wouldn't be able to root, as I heard some update went out that prevented ppl from rooting)
-----------------
UPDATE:
I must have THE WORST Karma in the world, as soon as I posted this I stopped being able to see my SD card, and the phone keeps wanting to sync with HTC sync. No option to mount the USB anymore. I'm ready to bash my head and this phone repeatedly into a brick wall (after throwing my notebook off a balcony)
do you have sdk installed.
i had a hell of a time and ended up installing sdk in mydocuments instead of the root C:
again this is just one computer. my windows 7 machine was good from the start.
i haven't tried vista yet.
let me retrace my steps and see if i can help
this is also an option for rooting http://unrevoked.com/
i haven't tried it myself but you can download it to your phone and with a file explorer you can install it.
I've given up. This issue has made just pushed me completely away from Windows. I've realized that practically any USB device plugged in (except my old win mobile device) isn't recognized. Switching to Linux and hopefully a more compatible android experience.
Thanks for all the help!

My only thought (after having similar problems at work) is that there are still driver issues. I found a program called USBDeview that can be used to remove drivers left behind by other removal methods. It requires admin rights, so if you don't have those, sorry. If you still want to try, the program was a free download found using Google. Remove the drivers, reboot, and give it one more try.

It's not recognized when the phone is on? Seeing as you posted this topic using your phone I assume so lol. Have you tried restarting your computer?

some cheap cables are for charging ... bt headsets and other stuff the data cables dont connect, its just for power.

it must be a powered usb hub, on my buddies laptop only 1 out of 4 usb ports saw his phone.
if you can get into download mode you arent bricked.
try installing i9000 drivers, or try another computer.
I came up with this a while back. Could very well be the same issue.
Let me start by saying I'm flash happy, and everyone that knows me personally, tells me to just quit jacking with my phone. NOT A CHANCE! I'm on my 3rd Cappy and shouldn't have ever exchange it again. I only had to in the beginning, because I was a newbie and had not know enough, but to get me in trouble.
I presume that this should work on all Windows OS's. I personally am running Vista Enterprise x86.
My symptoms:
Plug in phone to the usb and it there was about a 15% chance off being able to mount to usb, and Windows recognizing as a mass storage device. I tried un-installing drivers and re-installing and it would work some of the time, until the point came when parts of the driver install would fail. Then to the point when it was just completely unrecognizable. I thought I had it fixed because it seemed intermittent. In the middle of flashing to stock, something interrupted communication between the pc and my phone. Restarted the phone and attempted the flash again. Got a little farther and froze again. I had to use another pc that I had never connected my phone to before and I was able to use my jig to trigger download mode, because no buttons combinations would allow it into download mode.
This got me thinking that it was specific to my pc and not my cable or my phone.
My resolution:
I went straight to the registry and went to find. I deleted every entry that came up for "i897" and "i9000" excluding what was listed in the system volume information, as I didn't have permissions to remove any keys. I didn't keep count, but I probably deleted 300-400 registry keys that pointed to my phone. It seems as if with each developers rom that I had flashed, there was an entry for a different device. Don't quote me on that, because it is just my personal consensus. I also un-installed the samsung drivers, the unknown device driver, kies software, and anything associated with samsung. I noticed that next to all of the i9000 instances, the hex key for me started with 1000ee. So I also searched for the first part of that key trying to ensure that all instances of the device. Lastly, I deleted the samsung folder from program files.
I installed the samsung drivers package commonly listed in all of the other threads for x86 operating systems. I plugged in my phone and watched as each and every driver installed successfully. Keep in mind different drivers are installed depending on if you have usb debugging on/off, and the options for if the preferences on you phone are set to media, storage, or kies. I have multiple usb ports, however testing has shown me that, for me and my setup, I can plug into the port that I used when installing the drivers the final time, I am able to connect consistently. Earlier today, I tried to plug into a different usb port and it was an unknown device. I am led to believe, this is because I didn't un-install the unknown device on this particular port.
If you intend to work in the registry, please remember to always back it up first. You can always restore.
Hopefully my findings can help you as they did me. Happy flashing and I would like to thank the community for the dedication to assisting each other and the developers, for making flashing, better than crack cocaine. Flashing rom's doesn't make you twitch near as much as a crackhead.
Well since you can't use your phone you should sell it to me

[Q] Galaxy Tab Issue

Not sure when it began but I am unable to connect my tab to any pc. I have tried 4 different ones. It just gives me the error message "usb device not recognized". I have the custom rom from overcome(the latest one) installed. I put the tab in download mode and the same issue remains. I turned on/off usb debugging and it still doesnt work. I even tried the *#7284#. That did not help either. Please help.
Hi..firstly, welcome to XDA Samsung Tablet Forum. I see you already register since Nov 10 but your post so far is only 2 post. So I'm consider you are still newbie (same like me
Anyway, back to your question.
Have you go to samsung webpage and download the kies?
http://www.samsung.com/my/support/d...WDXME&prd_mdl_name=GT-P1000&srchword=GT-P1000
Do that first, after install it, go to >>Tools>>Install driver. Click it.
make sure your tab is connected to your PC via USB.
After you click the install driver, kies will download the driver for you and it will automatically detect your USB tab.
please try.

Sounds like a fault with windows. Try running updates or use a registry cleaner/fixer see if that helps.
CCleaner has one.
[EDIT] Ah I misread, looks like you have tried other systems with same issue. Not sure then.
I'm assuming you're not using the same cable with all of them, otherwise you'd want to try a different cable. If you've tried the different cables between the different devices and still the same issue, you might roll one of them back to stock and see if that fixes the issue or not. It's possible you have bad usb ports, but more than likely it's a software issue on the tab.

How about the usb cable? Possibility is high due to cable itself. Since you using the same cable with all PC. You should try to change it.

Bad cable or bad tab. Borrow a cable to eliminate that.
Not sure, When i was reading instruction for how to update with overcome rom it said that if Odin doesnt recognise the tab try a different USB port.

[Q] Galaxy Ace s5830 does not detect USB

I have a Galaxy Ace here. When I connect my USB cable to the phone from the computer, the phone starts charging BUT doesn't recognise it's connected to the computer. (i.e. the USB connected does NOT show in the android notification bar.)
I have tried
power on/off,
cable unplug on both ends,
other computers,
factory reset 2 times
etc.
and all ended with the same result.
Seems like this is a problem with the phone. Any way I can fix this?

There's nothing wrong with enabling usb debugging so I don't understand the exclamation.

i don't think it actually has ANYTHING to do with the OS on my computer.
I have a linux and i have a MAC. Just one or two hours ago i used Simple USB plugging (by pressing on the USB Connected Notification that pops up on the phone's notification area) WITHOUT ANY INSTALLATION OF KIES, and I performed data transfer of music files and picture files in and out of the device... i have done that with BOTH the Mac and the Linux just an hour ago without installing Kies.
However, now the phone would not show the USB Connected notification on my android device when i plug in the USB...... neither in the Mac nor in the Linux. My phone is charging....... but my phone is not understanding that a bloody DATA cable is plugged in and it is connected with a PC (or a MAC or a Linux)
This should not be an issue of the computer OS...... neither be an issue of Kies since i DID do all these without kies just an hour ago in both the Mac and the linux. You do not require Kies for using your samsung phone simply as a SD card.

Just try:
sudo apt-get update

Don't always come to the conclusion that it has nothing to do with the OS , because in technical stuff anything is possible .

that's just me highlighting on some of the key points in the middle of so much textual info. Sorry if it looks annoying.... will try and work on it.
i badly need some help here... couldn't use my first android phone perfectly for even 24 hours since my brother got it from abroad - very frustrating

the thing is, when i connect the phone with the computer via USB, my phone is just charging without recognizing that it is actually connected to a computer.
As a result, ADB is also seeing nothing connected with the computer. A very weird case over here.

Yup! I tried my official samsung galaxy cable.... i tried my friend's official samsung galaxy cable..... no luck.
i have a similar problem. the only difference is that i updated my firmware using odin. i am currently using xwkpn version (2.3.3). Can i change my software version without using the usb cable ?

[Q] computer can't see Galaxy S

my samsung galaxy s is not recognized by my computer no matter what i do!
don't know why, i've done some research, no results.
i've installed Kies, which i assume already installs the drivers, but when i connect, the computer shows no sign of connection (it says that i need to update drivers in device manager??) i tried different USB ports, toggled USB debugging on/off, NOTHING WORKS
the reason i want my computer to recognize the galaxy is because i want to update it to android 2.3.5 via odin. but when i enter download mode, the computer doesn't recognize it. when i'm in the system, the computer STILL doesn't recognize it...???
please somebody help, it's rooted, running a different MIUI version (not the ones in xda dev section), i'm not sure where i got it from, but it's called an ENG_MIUI?
CM7 (and subsequently MIUI) is built from the Nexus S source code, so find the proprer drivers for it. "CM7 drivers" should be a sufficient google search. Also, Kies sometimes interferes while using the other drivers. If you run into any problems, uninstall Kies.

To get your phone recognized you need nexus s drivers. But that won't help you get it recognized by kies.
You need stock firmware on your phone to get it updated through kies.

Just to clarify, this won't help you. Samsung uses Samsung drivers. Since you do not currently have Samsung firmware on your phone, this won't do you any good. As previously stated by two very informative posters, you will need the Nexus S drivers to recognize your phone.
And, also as previously stated by just an absolutely wonderfully helpful poster, if you do a simple google search you'll find exactly what you need. Try either Nexus S Driver, CM7 Driver, Nexus S CM7 Driver, or really anything else similar. You could also check the CM7 Wiki, as I'm sure there would be a link for them there. And finally, if you simply search XDA Developers, I'm sure you'd find plenty of posts with what you need.
Hopefully that helps.
thanks
now my computer can see it when it's in android, but why does it STILL not see my Galaxy S in download mode???
do i need another set of drivers? (it said driver not found)
BTW THANKS GUYS!!! sorry if i'm being annoying

yes, the nexus s drivers are installed, but i STILL can't connect through download mode...
try different computer, install samsung driver then connect your phone
still doesn't work???
Well, it seems to be a driver issue!
Try these (32-bit windows) but make sure that you are having a fresh win7 installed just in any case that your reg got corrupted with drivers (Ime ).
Still not working, then try on another pc..!

Well, CM7 drivers won't help SGS to get recognized on PC on DLD mode, you need another set of drivers and not those Nexus S's. I had the above ones installed on my PC (Google's your Best friend ) .
I had to install the drivers manually,
Right click on computer, click manage -> device something -> find your device in the list, select to update driver, search manually and enter the path to your android sdk and search.
Worked like a charm to me

computer could see device in download mode?
hi
i had same problem, but computer recognize the device as "unknown device"
in all modes, developed, storage etc...
i am close to think thats is problem of internal usb driver of the rom
want to downgrade from de device, whitout usb, but i dont know how do it, because i am not root, and its no possible in 2.3.4 whituot usb.
thanks
I had a lot of similar issues with my I9000, too.
Tried everything on ROM and driver side also on different computers.
Finally it turned out that my Micro USB connector was corroded.
I have around 30 people in our company that have the same phone, and 5 of them had similar issues. I guess it's a common problem with this device.
I took a toothpick and cleaned the contact of the connector by sliding it up and down for a couple of million times. This also did the trick for my colleagues.
I think it's at least worth to try it.
Good luck
i try to clean the contact, but still cant connect to the computer.
I wonder if a method of degrading the system with a signed rom from the recovery, without using the USB cable or ODIN.
i have a same problem. Any new solution?
