Kinda, yes.
Custom ROMs, Pretty much....I'm trying to figure the nitty gritty out but basically, If I understand correctly, this will give us the ability to load custom ROMs once all is cleaned up.
Root has already been achieved a bit ago. So you can root your phone now!!
Birdman and Koush are amazing. so while I appreciate the shout for the news, all props go to them!!!!

whenever you flash a new ROM or Kernel, just in case your phone doesn't like the Kernel you flash. for example my phone doesn't like anything but a Low Voltage Kernel, whereas my friends Droid doesn't like anything but Ultra Low Voltage Kernel. Each phone is different.
Currently my phone is running CyanogenMOD 6.1RC4 with the NEXtheme with the Stock CM 6.1 Kernel. So far I absolutely love it. I am so happy that I decided to Root my phone. Now Im slowly teaching my self how to build ROMS and themes and such.

(Q) How to install/flash kernel?

So with the kernel released, anyone want to educate us how to flash a kernel? Id like to dig into this kernel, and if I can do anything with it, id like to know how to flash it to test...
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA Premium App
it should be the same as on any other phone. boot into ClockWork Recovery and select "install .zip from sd card"(or you could specify in ROM Manager that you want to do that also.
No, its not the same as any other phone...you can't install a custom kernel on the Bionic because it can only run a signed boot image...ala the locked bootloader.
The release of the kernel source, while welcome, is not anything that end users can do anything with at all and is of limited use to developers as well, due to the fact that Moto doesn't release everything and custom kernels are not possible.

Well, you're wrong.
It the phone was unlocked, that is where you'd flash the kernel - through recovery.
well, the procedure of installing a kernal is the same as a ROM(meaning you don't have to go through BootLoader)... so as far as installing, the above is how you'd do it... but wether or not(not) your phone accepts it is a different story considering the current status of the Bionic.
Hmm, wonder if any one is willing to try... If u have then knowledge to put that in a flashsble zip, il try... what's the worst that could happen.... Have soft brick and rds back to life....???

Jeez. The kernel source was barely released a day or two ago. Give the dev community a few days to sort out what they can do with it before getting all crazy about it. We already have ClockworkMod Recovery for the Bionic. Chances are, since they have the full source code, we'll have refined flashable kernels that are bootloader-compliant in the coming weeks.

I am hoping this is the case as well.
Not sure if the entire source was released or just what was contractually obligated to under the GPL.(which is likely the case since everything would give the dev's the key to the kingdom so to speak.)

Well...since we are being sticklers for the facts here...the easiest and most efficient way to load a custom kernel, if we could do so, would be fastboot.
They are typically released for most devices with unlocked bootloaders in update.zip format, but it's really device dependent and several forms are often available.

Yea, there's 2 versions of SafeStrap out. I'd suggest Hashcode's until Rick patches his up. I'm rather surprised to see you're running ICS, but just now heard about SafeStrap? I didn't think that most ICS ROMs even flashed nicely with bootstrap.

My plans are to add a reboot toggle and the 1% battery mod. I already saw Dan's root method for Jb but I kept running into errors. When I got to adb shell near the last step no matter what I tried it would tell me no directory of that name so I might wait until a one click root shows up. Shouldn't be long now that we actually have a root method.

(Unofficial) LG G Flex custom ROM and recovery Development (for all US variants)

So I am newer to the development for custom recoveries for LG phones. Knowing that the loki is still locked it doesn't mean we can't start working on some new ROM's and the custom recoveries for the phone. So I thought I would open this up so that we can start working on it together on what we are all waiting for: custom recovery with a cool ROM and modding some of the features and apks that came with the phone (quick remote, q slide, etc.).
I am starting with the TWRP and CM that have been made for the G2 in the hopes that it won't take as long to develop. Would making a repo on github be the easiest way to host the code and have source control? I look forward to working and learning from those who choose to participate.

The custom recovery is not possible at the moment with a locked bootloader, and unless it gets FreeGee or Loki a custom recovery won't be possible, unless you have safestrap. Which you'll need @Hashcode for that.
But as far as modding APKs, that's easy, pull them using adb or copy, decompile, make your mods, compile, and push back to phone. Adb might be best, and I suggest a shell stop if pushing framework or systemUI.
While its awesome your wanting to contribute to the community however, this thread should be moved to general.

I can definitely move it to general if that is the rule, but I am doing this in anticipation for either an unlocked loki or boot loader. I'm sure it won't be that long before one or the other is unlocked.
Thanks for the info on the apks I appreciate it. I've been doing android development for a while now but haven't really gotten into the ROMs more than modding some of the CM and PSX ROM s on my rooted development phones and tablets. I was hoping to start this thread to get some people in on the Flex development so we could figure out an exploit or workaround on the boot loader or loki. The more we know about the device itself The better to understand how to work around the vendor's security right? And if there is development being done then you would want it in a development thread right? If I am wrong then I will apologize and move it.

I have been waiting patiently for this and am so excited at how quickly things are moving for this device. It really shouldn't be too very much longer but in the meantime I will continue working on my ROM and patiently wait for those that are working on this to make it so we don't brick our devices trying to unlock what LG doesn't seem like they want unlocked. And to be honest I'm not that impressed with the LG ROM but I do like aspects. The quick remote is nice and the quick slide has proved useful so I would like to keep those but get rid of all the bloat and that LG keyboard.

As to who is working on what I will allow them to tell you. This really wasn't a thread to steal the thunder from the developers that are working so hard to access what we currently can't. I put this thread up to start a dialogue on ROM creation in anticipation for the unlocked loki or bootloader. Having said that I will keep everyone updated on what I hear but I am going to let the people that are doing it post if first so as to not steal their thunder.
What do you guys think, as we wait patiently for news :/ would be the best base for a custom ROM for the Flex? CyanogenMod, AOSP, AOKP, or maybe PSX? I have started two different ROM projects; one CyanogenMod and a vanilla AOSP ROM which seams to be easier to work with if you are newer to the ROM building process. I'm interested to here a why and how from those who have built a ROM from compiling to posting. So what are we thinking for the Flex because it is going to be interesting because of the screen size and native resolution.
