[Q] Google Maps alternative, I despise advertisements... - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So today I used Google Maps to search for a location. I did not appreciate the ads at the bottom of the search results.
Is there a way to disable the ads? Shall I just reinstall Sprint Navigation(telenav is good) and use that instead?
Thank you thank you
edit: should have noted that i do use the turn by turn nav. so an online, gps enabled option is what id like. ill check out the option you noted, t12icky0

i had the same issue..i just didnt like Google maps. went through many different programs but eventaully ended up getting an APP called " IGO"...its an offline as well as online map directions service. you would just need to download the maps for you state(or any state).
ITS GREAT because you dont need an internet connection as it can run the maps and such offline unless you wanna use GPS(or anything else).

Where do you download iGo I don't see it in the market??

IM NOT SURE IF IGO is for a rooted phone...as i have a rooted phone so if anyone i sent the stuff to please email me back if it does not work on a NON-rooted phone so i can make sure to let people know. Im pretty sure tho it does not have to be rooted.

Forcering app?

There was an app on the market called forcering, it was used to turn the ringer on the G1 on if set to silent and maybe misplaced. You would send a codeword sms to the phone and it would switch from vibrate to full ringer. The app is no longer available, I was wondering if maybe someone had it and could upload it on here.
I was looking for this app also, I couldn't find it anymore? I'm going to search internet and see if I can find the apk
I have just re-imaged my phone and am missing this app too. If anyon has it, please upload it.
I have a feeling though that it will resurface later this month when Adroid Market will introduce paid apps.
is it even possible to put the package of the app on here without the use of the market?
dude I was beta testing for stericson and lost it too

I say post it, or email it to me, the app is very useful. One of my roomates still has it on his G1 because we havent rooted it yet. My other roomate and I have rooted and since lost the app and would like it back.
I'd really like a copy of this as well. Sending you a PM, Dave.
Please post it, or I'll pm harass you!
i would also like this app after i finally modded my phone to rc30 i lost every thing....please pm me...thanks in advance.

thank you agian...i really like this app I used this three times the first time i had it...
your welcome and btw did it install for you ?? i never re-installed any of my backed up apps
i'm curious as well, did it work, and if it did, do we need to push this app in recovery mode. never pushed an app on my phone except the market so not sure how to do it

Use adb install, not adb push.

How come alot of apps do not show up in android market...especially paid apps?

I just can't seem to find certain applications I am looking for. I even went onto cyrket.com on the phone and found what I want and I click the barcode to get it and it says it cannot be found. What the hell am I doing wrong to not be able to find this stuff?
maybe i can help what u looking 4..cuz i have alot of apk on my computer i can send u
So can anyone tell me what I need to do to make paid apps show up in the market on the phone? I read something about having to sign up to google checkout but that thread said it only works for US G1's. This is a Canadian Rogers G1 so I'm wondering what I have to do.

Beautiful Widgets Won't Download.

Alright. Let me lead off by saying I searched google and this forum and I couldn't find the answer to my problem. I have found the "answer" to my problem that has worked for other people but not for me. So let me explain my problem and the solutions I tried. Any help would be appreciated.
I bought Beautiful Widgets from the market place. When i go to download it, it says "download unsuccessful". Let me make clear that i'm not rooted (or ever want to be) and I'm running 2.1-update1.
Solutions that I've tried..
1. settings > apps > manage apps > I cleared data in the "Download Manager" and cleared cache in the "Market" section.
Basically i took this advice, http://androidforums.com/samsung-moment/38687-problem-beautiful-widgets.html, it worked for that dude, Didn't work for me.
2. I've restarted the phone a few times and that didn't work.
3. I refunded my money, and bought the app again, didn't work that time either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Edit: I gave this a new title because paid apps do download, just not beautiful widgets.
Can you install any app at all or does this affect all apps?

this only happens to paid apps. After all of this happened, I successfully downloaded beautiful silent widgets (or w/e) in the market and it was free.

Do they take apps down when they update them? Just curious, after you answer that i'll give an update after I find out what the problem is.
A dude on #android on Efnet IRC has the same problem.
He tried to buy it, said it went successful, then it was authorizing purchase for a long time.
Then got stuck, then Google issued him a refund because of some server error.
Now, when he goes to his downloads, it says Beautiful Widgets still says "purchased".
The BW author is on twitter all the time. I talk to him time to time. I think it was yesterday he mentioned that there are problems with his server and discussing with the powers that be to get a new one. If you have a twitter account, you may try him there if you havent sent him an email already.
hum - having exactly the same problem.. says purchased, click install, says download unsuccessful.. Followed the cache clear and made no difference..

bumping this:
I have emailed dev - but no reply..
Anyone have any thoughts?
Sorry I don't have an answer for you, but Beautiful Widgets caused problems for me anyway. Constant freezes and crashes. Overall slowdown of everything. I'm back to normal after uninstalling.

App that spoofs carrier codes for Market?

I had a little app that would change the carrier code sent to the App Market, so that it would think you coming from AT&T, T-Mobile, or a bunch of other carriers.
I flashed my flash, and now I can remember what the app was called! I do remember its icon was a little green lock unlocked on the left side. Can someone help a brother out and point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
Market Access
The app is called my market.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Thanks for the suggestions, but neither of these is what I had downloaded. The app I was using was black-themed, had three tabs, and let you apply different 6 digit carrier codes. It didn't access the Market itself. You still used the Market App, but the third option at the top was no longer AT&T... it was "downloads". It would also allow you to backup values, etc.
Anyone?

Market Enabler (another Program) and Market Access BOTH do this, however, Market Access allows for you to spoof on Boot, so that you essentially only need to spoof once.

Please from now on, use the search tool on the forums. I found the answer in 2seconds by searching "Market Restrictions"

Thanks Dave, but I was using the search function (and google) quite heavily with no luck. The key word I was missing was "Restrictions". I was using things like carrier codes spoofing, market carrier, etc and spending a lot of time looking in the different Markets themselves.
Thanks for the link, but I'm not sure the scolding was necessary.

You've probably found it, but I think you are looking for Market Enabler.
It's icon is a green "ME" in front of paper bag. It has 3 tabs: "Actual", "Settings list", and "Set custom"
Thanks for the suggestion for Market Access warri, it'll be nice having it happen automatically.

May I enquire what app is it that you are trying to get by appearing to be on another carrier. I installed my market and it did allow me to do this, but looking around and pretending to be on another carrier did not reveal any great sounding apps at all. Most of what I saw was bloatware, or apps to check your account information, and look for things like the WiFi hotspots for that carrier. What is it that you are wanting to get, that is unavailable to us AT&T folks?

I'm pretty sure you're going to need root to use that method.
No root required to disable apps. However, to remove them, then the phone needs to be rooted.

Subject line of the thread linked says Root not required, but sure!
Tried it out just now, thanks for linking it @blkghost22, I've been trying to find a way to disable certain things and this did it!
Stock Music app sometimes comes up when I connect my phone to the car via Bluetooth, and there wasn't any easy way to disable it
I also recommend going to Filter, typing ATT, and disabled all that crap too - I've done everything except Knox, Remote Support, and Usage manager.... someone needs to come up with a safe list of apps to disable to debloat this device, it would be very helpful!
Will this let me disable stuff like the built in browser? Because there are some aid that the phone just won't let you disable which I find really dumb.

It should, I don't know the title of it from an APK or package standpoint (I know it's called Internet, but I can't find it searching right now), but once you find it, you can disable it
EDIT - SBrowser is the name of it

Okay, I can't read. I'm sending thanks X 2 to Charlotte, NC.
I'm at 55 apps disabled so far, and I don't think I'm being all that aggressive with disabling TW / Samsung / ATT features..... Anyone know of a good safe list for this phone yet where we can really speed this thing up? Not like it really needs it, but there's lots of hidden crap on it running we know about but haven't been able to disable previously

Honestly, and I appreciate you looking to me for advice, I don't think I'm the best one to go off of, I know that nothing I've disabled was going to crash my phone, but it's all that TW / Samsung / ATT features like I was saying - the program allows you to filter by text used, even if in the middle of a package name, and that helped a few times tracking down some odd APKs
I read on Forbes that the S6 has 56 apps of bloatware on it, and I'm at 55 disabled apps, with a lot of TW / Samsung / ATT features still running, so most likely that was a list of what they could see from the app drawer or something....
Nothing from me. Just wanted to see if people actually tried it. If it worked then go thank the dev or programmer of that debloating app.
