Odin stuck at file analysis - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried just about everything I could find on Google, but Odin refuses to go past "file analysis". I'm trying to flash JH2
Here's everything I've tried
1) Change USB port
2) Administrator mode and XP SP3 compatibility (i'm on w7 x64)
3) Re-partition checked/unchecked
4) Rebooted phone
5) rebooted computer
6) removed sim card and sd
What am I missing?

It's almost always the fact that you didn't have Odin up and running with all the info in ahead of time before you plug the phone in to the USB port.
Do all the Odin stuff first, then set the phone up for the download.

Agreed.
First if you are able to use a program like Droid Explorer then you are fine driver wise so Open Odin first then Press and Hold Volume up and down and while doing that plug the USB Cable into the phone and that should turn on the phone into downloading mode.

Yes, make sure you have odin open first. Then you can go into download mode and start. Easiest way I have to do it is this:
-Open odin
-plug phone into usb with USB debugging enabled
-open command prompt and get to the android-sdk-windows
-adb reboot download
That should work perfectly. Takes all the guess work of trying to get it into the download mode.

worked for me

Trying to use the odin one click for JI6.. stuck at file analysis again. Why are samsung firmwares updates such a pain? I've never had a problem with any of the HTC firmware updaters

This worked for me too!

Thanks. That worked for me as well.

I just created an account on XDA to tell you how INCREDIBLY grateful I am to you, because you just singlehandedly saved my phone. Thank you. Times a million.

I've jig-fixed my captivate into download mode and odin recognizes it. Even after plugging it in and after the .pit and .tar are qued, it still gets stuck on "file analysis.."

Worked for me too but...
All I had to do was
Close Odin3
Unplug my phone & pull the battery
Reopen Odin3
Then hold the volume up/down buttons while plugging in the usb cord
and then clicked start when it recognized my device.
I appreciate your help, you cleared my confusion!
Thanks!

Are you running ODIN in admin? Did you connect your phone to a rear usb port? Have you tried a different cable?

I've never seen Odin require administrative permissions. Installation of drivers, yes, but Odin and Heimdall do not require admininstrative permissions.

On my win 7 it wont ever work without admin.

I second that. But some people say its needed. I never had to.

Odin trouble... newer Captivate user

I'm having trouble flashing back to JF6 after a failed JH7 OTA update.
I can't flash back to stock firmware after following a lot of the directions posted around the forum. Odin One Click is all bank when I click start and I immediately get "All threads completed 0/0" and nothing happens. I've tried several different orders of operations in regards to putting into downloading mode and connecting to the PC, etc.
Also, Odin3 does the same thing after selecting the PIT file and firmware from samfirmwares. I get the same message and nothing happens.
Is there a more specific guide someone can point me to or share some insight? Thanks in advance.

How are you using odin?
The process is the same for either ODIN one-click or ODIN3
Your phone MUST be in download mode.
You will get a black screen with a yellow triangle, saying "DOWNLOAD"
The process to get into download (works for me) is by powering off the phone.. odin must already be turned on in your computer. <<IF you are using win7, run it as admin... right-click then "Run as Administrator">>
With the phone powered off, press and hold both volume buttons, then plug in the USB cable to the phone. The cable must already be plugged in to the computer.
Next, start ODIN and wait for it to finish.
This should be a foolproof method.
I am having the same issue...
I followed the exact directions on the thread title '[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY 'and I get into "Download mode" but nothing happens. I click start on Odin (the one downloaded from that thread) and it *instantly* says <OSM> All threads complete. (succeed 0 / failed 0).
What am I doing wrong?
Samsung Captivate running 2.1 rooted with "the beast". I bricked it last night trying to get OTA gps "fix" notice to stop bugging me.
Any tips? Thanks!

What OS are you running on your computer? Is it win7? If it is, make sure you run ODIN as administrator. Also, is ODIN on prior to connecting phone to computer?
Try following these steps:
1. Plug in USB cable to computer
2. Turn on ODIN (run as administrator)
3. Turn off phone (not connected to anything)
4. Hold down both volume buttons on phone
5. Connect USB cable to phone while doing STEP4
6. Click start in ODIN
This should work. If you are using ODIN3 instead of one-click, then make sure to set .PIT and PDA files properly, and to click re-partition if you are trying to unbrick your phone
Thank you....
I'm using Win 7 64-bit.
I've tried on both ways, prior and after, just to see if either worked.
The version of Odin is Odin3excution v1.00 downloaded from the aforementioned thread. (yes execution is misspelled on the actual program).
I am running it as administrator using the right click, run as function.
I can't link anything because I'm a new user (BAH! ) but it says Odin3 One-Click Downloader on the top in black.
ALL the boxes are blank. Every thing is blank...thank you!

I'm having the same issue. I'm on WinXP, SP2 (old computer, I know.) I'm normally a Mac user, this is the only PC I have.
I'm using the same Odin One Click version Drew stated, with all boxes blank. Perhaps a drivers issue?
look up the odin one-click thread and DL the appropriate drivers and try again
As soon as you get into download mode and connected odin should recognize your phone - is odin seeing your phone?
No, windows is a POS. I've downloaded so many different drivers and each time I get an error saying it failed. I've literally tried every Captivate 64 bit win 7 driver out there, I downloaded KIES and tried that too.
I'm *really* close to dumping windows and android and just going full Apple. I am so sick of this crap and I've always hated Apple products (almost to the point of being extreme) but...if ya can't beat 'em, join 'em.
I've spent the better part of 2 days trying to get this to work and the main issue, from what I'm slowly finding out, is windows wont recognize the phone and keeps dumping it before it gets connected.
It's just really too much at this point. I can go buy *shudder* an iMac, an iPhone *double shudder* and I'll be up and running in 15 minutes.
F8ck this noise.
Try this link for 64bit windows drivers.
Before you install, go to control panel, and delete all previous drivers.
Reboot your computer once before re-installing the drivers above.
http://http://www.mediafire.com/?3dh4d6up72me9re
I'm pretty sure you won't need to install .net framework for Odin to work.
But if after drivers it still doesn't work, try installing .net framework 4.0 as well. You will need that installed to root anyways.

Nope, ODIN does not recognize my phone. I've tried it a few more times using the correct sequence and got nothing. Even reinstalled the drivers and rebooted the PC (without my phone connected).
Issue has been resolved. I tried it on a newer system running WinXP and got flashed back to stock with no problem... although the OTA update failed again.... but I've got the one-click version of that too.
Thanks for everyone's help!

please help: frozen at boot, can't get recovery mode

So, I think I broke my captivate. No, scratch that, I KNOW I broke my captivate. I think it's just software bricked but I'm not sure. Here's what's going on:
I rooted my captivate, and installed CWM. I flashed Serendipity 2.0 and that was fine. It booted, and I downloaded ROM Manager and went to partition the SD card. It rebooted, showed the AT&T screen, and froze on a black screen with white letters that says:
"GALAXY S
GT-I9000
SAMSUNG"
Holding down any combination of the volume buttons and turning on the phone does not go into recovery. It goes to the same screen as above.
The only way (via buttons) that i can get into download mode is to pull the battery and cable, put the battery back, hold down both volume buttons, and plug in the USB. However, when in download mode, windows says: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."
On the other hand, if I plug USB in while it's frozen at the "GALAXY S GT-I9000" screen, windows and Odin DO recognize it. When I click start in odin, it gets stuck at "File Analysis..." though.
I would really appreciate any help getting this captivate running again. What can I do here?
Desk top or lap top, have you tried different ports, different drivers. You can recovery from where you are. Where did you get the drivers from? What ports are you using

Do not install save files to desktop. When your phone is in dl mode and plugged into the rear port of your pc click on the error message. Direct the computer to the driver files you just downloaded. This has worked for some

OK, got the new drivers and saved them to my desktop.
It's windows XP, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to point XP at those drivers. It pulls up the "Hardware Update Wizard" but it won't use the files. There are 3 .inf files, which is what the wizard wants. If I try to use any of them, it says: "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware"

I don't have the android SDK installed on that computer. Give me a minute and I'll find out
So, the phone does not respond to adb. "adb devices" returns a blank line. "adb reboot recovery" returns "error: device not found." I get the same result whether it's in download mode or frozen on the GALAXY S splash screen
Device manager shows the phone as "SAMSUNG Android USB Composite Device" when it's frozen at that screen, but as "Unknown Device" when it's in download mode.
How can I force XP to use specific drivers?
Edit: I just uninstalled the drivers and let windows find them on its own. It found and installed:
Driver Provider: SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd.
Driver Date: 5/12/2010
Driver Version: 5.2.0.4
Is that the right driver version?

No, odin needs to see your phone.
What cord are you using, is it oem
it's the cable that came with the phone.
I don't think the cable's the problem though, because both odin and windows DO recognize the phone in its frozen state... i guess i could be wrong about that

Need Odin3 1 click/stuck on boot screen

So I flashed my phone to Phoenix and was going wonderfully. Flew into St. Louis from Oklahoma and the phone froze up. It's now stuck on the AT&T boot screen. Occassionally after doing a battery pull and turning it on, the Phoenix boot screen will come up and I've gotten it to the lock/unlock screen but is unresponsive to touch.
Occassionally it even has what almost looks like colorful static on the screen. So now I'm in a completely different state without my home laptop for a week with the Odin3 1 click and am unable to find a download link for it.
Help would be appreciated. I was hoping to get the phone into recovery to try and flash back to stock or reflash Phoenix but it just stays stuck on the AT&T boot screen now.

Do you have an Odin download link? The Odin link on the site isn't good anymore and google isn't helping
here's an alternative link I've used:

I appreciate the help so far and the Odin link. I managed to get Odin downloaded. I managed to get my phone in download mode. However, Odin is not registering that there is any phone. Normally I'd see a COM but nothing is showing up.
I started by running Odin.
Then got my phone in download mode.
I can't get any farther.
Do you have the drivers installed on your PC ? I also read somewhere where you have to have the latest net frame work as well...If you do...you might have a bad usb cord...and here in St.Louis..there are a lot of AT&T stores you can get one..

Well, on the original thread that had the link for Odin has the 32/64 Samsung drivers. I downloaded the drivers zip file to the desktop of the laptop.
One thing I find strange is usually when I plug in the phone to my laptop with the USB cable, the option to view files, etc pops up. It is not on this laptop.

Did you install the drivers then ? Sometimes my wife's Samsung laptop does that..and not install anything going to the desktop..If everything is loaded correctly..you 2 drive pop up windows should open..

Odin is also finnicky about USB ports. If you are on a desktop machine, try using one in the back instead of the front, or if you have multiple sets, try using a different one. I've had Odin not recognize certain USB ports but recognize others before.
Finally, I suspect you already know this, but for sanity's sake make sure you start both the PC and phone up fresh after reboots, open Odin, then connect the phone. Connecting the phone first breaks Odin.

What OS are you running? Are you explicitly starting odin in administrator mode (right-click->run as administrator)?
Okay, so I switched USB ports and it suddenly recognized and it started to download drivers. But it was listed as a gadget Serial and no drivers found. Geez this would be so much easier if I was at home where the laptop is set up with everything instead of being several states away.
Okay, so apparently I do not have the correct drivers installed. I really appreciate all the help so far. At this point, should I just google Samsung Captivate drivers or does someone have a link handy?
I can't get to my debugging as the phone stays on teh AT&T boot screen. I did have it enabled before I left OKC though.

I did manage to reboot it and Phoenix came up. All drivers were showing ready except for ADB and then the phone shut down and ADB said phone was unplugged.

[Q] UPDATED: ODIN wont recognize my phone with USB debugging on, but will without it

Alright, so I was having some problems with my cognition rom and decided go back to stock so I could flash the new cognition. I put my phone into download mode, and it took a few times for ODIN to see my phone. After I got ODIN to see my phone I tried to master clear, it did not work. I had to pull the battery out and try again. I rebooted my phone again, and many program errors came up. I shut off my phone, tried to get into download mode and it wouldn't let me using the volume down + up then insert USB with ODIN open.
Now to get into download mode I must hold buttons with battery out, put USB in, and put battery in and I get download mode instantly, but I cant get ODIN to recognize my phone at all anymore. I tried many different methods(odin open before DL mode, odin closed before download mode, etc). I looked through a few threads and couldnt find anything that would work. Also my window 7 64 now says it doesn't recognize the USB device when I plug it in. Whats going on with my phone?? Im getting very annoyed! Is there any way to go back to stock besides ODIN??? Any help is appreciated!!
***UPDATE***
Seems like I may have a 3 button combo lock, and no USB support of any kind(besides charging).
UPDATE: I used rom manager to flash over my old rom. My phone works again, but it wont go into download mode at all now. Only when I use the cognition menu to send it to download mode will it work. I still cant get ODIN to see my phone. I want to go back to stock still, but without ODIN working, can I?

under your captivate battery, there is a number like 1008, 1010, what is yours?
I've had the same trouble with download mode + odin on my Windows 7 64 bit pc too.
I have to have odin running, phone off with battery out, and usb cable in. I leave the battery out for about a 10 second count. Then put the battery in and hit all the buttons at the exact same time (power + volume up and down). The key here is that I only had to hit all three buttons momentarily to get it to go into download mode. I didn't have to hold them down for any length of time.
I easily spent 1 hour trying to get odin to work the last time I had to reflash to stock. Only because I forgot how hard it was three last time with my 64 bit machine.

So should I just keep trying to get into ODIN by just fiddling around with it? Ive tried an XP machine and it wouldnt work either. Does booting into download mode from the cognition power menu any different than entering download mode the manual way? Every time I put the battery in with the USB it takes me to the battery charger screen. At first with that issue, putting in the battery last while holding down volume up and down, would put the phone into download mode(as opposed to the normal ways of getting into download mode). Now that wont even work at all.
first you can try the 3 button fix, just search the forum for that.
you may need to build a jig or buy one online just in case, it will get you into the download mode easily.

im having horrible trouble with adb cmd. I installed the samsung drivers, put my phone in usb debugging, did some tutorials on how to install sdk correctly, went to the correct file paths in cmd promt, and still cant access the adb shell. Any pointers on this?
Also, could I wipe all data off internal storage and use the "reinstall package" option in recovery mode to use rom manager update.zip to restore my rom from my sd card? Im not sure if thats possible. Im getting errors with my rom, and it feels slower since I just reinstalled over the top of my faulty rom.
Seems the only usb function I have right now is to charge it. Hmmm USB brick?
Any help out there???
3g stopped working on my phone when I woke up. I really need to get a fresh rom installed.
If I recall correctly, the path to where adb is had changed. Check all folders inside the sdk folder. to make my life easier, I put the sdk folder right into the root directory (c and renamed it sdk. Don't know if that well help or not...

I changed the folder to androidsdk from whatever it was.
bueller bueller bueller...anyone?
Well, if your phone is a rev 1006 you "should" have a problem like losing your button combo. I guess that could have happened but I doubt it, I've got a 1007 and never lost it.
So, as for ADB here's what I do. Take the android SDK folder you downloaded and look inside it. There is a folder called tools. I take the tools folder and copy it to the root of my C: drive. Make sure you have all the drivers loaded, speaking of which I would uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Sounds like they flaked out for some reason. Next open up a cmd window, Start > Run > CMD.
Then type,
cd /
cd tools
adb devices <<this shows if your phone is recognized. if it is...
adb reboot download
*or
adb reboot recovery
*or
adb shell
For what it's worth, I have been flashing my phone since I got it in July and the only time I Master Clear is when I have had a problem like a soft brick or something that I was suspicious about the data on my internal SD. Which, so far has been maybe 3 times. I don't think necessary to Master Clear every time you flash to stock.
Also, you shouldn't really have to the pop out the batter to do the download mode trick. I turn my phone off, hold both Vol up and down, then plug in USB and I'm in download mode.

Im having USB driver problems, windows 7 will not recognize my phone. I think this is why adb wont recognize my phone correct? I can only get into download mode now but using the power menu thats custom from Cognition. Is my phone screwed?? Can I flash a ROM without ODIN?

Like I said, have you tried uninstalling the drivers from windows and reinstalling them? I am running Win 7 x64 and have had that happen. After i flash a rom or flash to stock sometimes windows doesn't recognize my phone at all. The first time I just used my laptop to flash but the second time I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled. It's also important that you plug into the USB ports directly on the motherboard on the back of your PC. There are known problems when trying the front usb ports or through a hub.

Just curious, is it a Dell laptop? My Dell never recognizes my phone unless I power the laptop on with the phone/USB plugged in. If the laptop is on, and I plug phone in it never works, so I leave it plugged in and reboot and it works. It drives me crazy, but whatever it's my work PC.

It is a dell actually, but I just tried your method and it didnt work for me. Thanks for the input though!
Alright, I downloaded kies mini today and it actually installed some drivers correctly. I was able to pull up my internal drive on the computer, but it wouldn't read it. I was able to get ODIN to see my phone(first time in weeks), but it only shows up when my phone is NOT in debugging mode. So im assuming Master Clear will work now. I was using AIO captivate tool box, and my phone rebooted at the click of the button into download mode, but once again it wont see my phone in ODIN while in download mode. Im getting closer!
Why wont ODIN recognize my phone with USB debugging on? Any more suggestions on how to make this happen?

Captivate stuck on phone-!-computer screen, even with jig

So I was flashing a stock rom from Odin, and Odin froze, so I unplugged the phone and took out the battery. Now, when I try to get into download mode, all I get is a screen with a phone-!-computer. Even with a usb jig, it just goes to this screen. My captivate is also not recognized by the computer when I plug it in when its on the phone-!-computer screen.

Have you tried all the steps in the Captivate Connection Issues post (in my signature)?
Does it say something about hardware upgrade failure?

Nope. It just doesn't show up at all; not even in device manager and it just shows the phone exclamation computer screen.

Yea more or less. The weird thing is it was detected before and odin was able to start the flash. But it hung after it said do not disconnect the device so I was forced to unplug it. Now I just don't see anything at all.

Have you given Heimdall a try? It sometimes works when Odin won't.

Yep. When I try to install the heimdall driver, the phone doesn't even show up so it won't install.

But I don't see the Libusb tab in device manager when I plug my phone in.
When u initially installed the drivers for Heimdall, they only installed to the usb port that u were connected to. So u need to be plugged into that specific port and then u should see it in the Device Manager.
And u really don't need to uninstall the drivers that u need for Heimdall, as long as u installed them after u installed the drivers from Kies. See this post... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19998299&postcount=115
And if u have tried everything in the Stickied thread--Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help to no avail, then ??

Yep I made a jig and it works but it doesn't go to the downloading screen with the shovel instead it just goes to the screen with the phone exclamation computer.
Then try this...may sound odd but anyway--just pull ur battery and leave it out for 5 minutes or so and then put it back in and try getting back into download mode and see what happens.
Btw, which stock odin were u trying that got u in this mess ?

The odin3 one click downloader. Yep I tried taking out the battery -- no go :/.
happened to my cappy yesterday. went through 7 hours to fix mine. had the same issue as yours. no download mode showing with any combo I try even recovery had 4 micro usb cables and still my pc is choosy. that screen is actually download mode. you just need the proper drivers for the pc to read it. I used the one from heimdall. tried for atleast 100x before my pc recognizes my cappy as gadget serial and then boom! after installing, uninstalling and reinstalling all is A-ok now. just try it and have faith on your cappy

What did you try before it was recognized? Did you just plug and replug the usb into the computer until it worked?
Mine did this before, when I accidently forgot to convert back to RFS before flashing back to stock, and I thought I was totally screwed. After this screen comes up the first time it will not go away, even if a download jig is used, until you get a good flash.
Try this:
Open your Odin, and have it ready with whatever you were trying to flash to begin with. Pull the battery on your phone, put your download jig in, and now put your battery in. It will still be the error screen that comes up. Pull your jig, and now plug your phone in. It should show on Odin now, and this flash should take correctly.

Also make sure the USB port you are using is a direct link to your board. I always use one of the original USB 2 ports on the back of my computer. Not using a USB hub either, but straight from the port to your phone.
