Newbie AOSP question and sharing - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Having a rooted Nexus one in my hand, I have been playing around with many of the custom ROMs and kernel over the past few months. (Thanks to nandroid backup)
For ROMs, I have been playing around with CM, LeoFroyo, Modaco, Kang-o-rama, ... stock FRF91 deoxed by Geo411m...etc.
For kernel, have been happy in using the intersectRaven's one dated at 0802 (stable one for me...)
Just a few days before, I have setup a Ubuntu... install the jdk 1.5; git; repo; .... and all necessary files for compiling the source from git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git -b froyo
Getting the source and compiling are very time consuming jobs because my network speed and computer are not very fast
So, I have successful compile the source, running lunch full_passion-userdebug ; make -j4 for my dual core machine, and find the system.img
I also download and install the dsixda kitchen, based on Leo's ROM, I have replaced it with my newest compiled apps (apks..) and pngs (black status bar ) and also replace the zImage from intersectRaven's kernel into my boot.img. After flashing the ROM in recovery, I am so lucky that my phone can boot up =_= with everything very smooth and OK.
Now, I have a few questions, as a newbie developer (sincerely asking for help~)
1) How can I get the latest google apps (gapps), and where can I get it? Are there any 'source code' for gapps? How to compile them?
2) If I want to get the source again (e.g. get the newest source of browser.apk), how & what command should I use?
3) If I want to modify the system settings, that is "Settings -> About Phone", which file should I modify?
4) After I get the source of AOSP, compilied them, is it mean that I have the rom deoxed? (Because I can see system/apps/ and all apps are breaking down into apks)
5) I enjoy using good things from others (e.g. LeoParts from Leo's ROM. Can I merge it into my rom and re-distribute after that? How?)
6) Is it necessary to sign *all* apk before they can be run on the phone?
7) I use dsixda kitchen and use testsign.jar. Just want to ask will the signing expires? And is it OK to distribute the ROM using test signing?
I know I get so many questions and they are so 'newbie...'. Sincerely hope that experts in this forum can answer my questions.
Once again, thanks all the ROM / Kernel makers in motivating me to custom the AOSP ROM myself.
Many thanks for all of your help.

GApps are proprietary, closed-source applications... you can get them from http://mirror.kanged.net/gapps/gapps-hdpi-20100814-signed.zip

AFAIK, yes, they are de-odexed. I believe you need to odex them later if you wish.

This should be fine... most, if not all, custom ROMs are signed with test keys...
Hope I've been able to help a bit, if not much... have fun building!!! Ask the ROM gurus on twitter...

Thanks, a quick question:
Will repo sync re-download all the source???
I remember I need many hours in download the -b froyo branch.
Any get latest command that only get the difference?
Also, if I only want to get a particular folder, e.g. packages/apps/Browser, what is the command? Thanks.

repo sync takes several hours the first time... but every successive sync is a delta/differential sync... depending on the number of changes in the repository, it could finish in a few minutes. I'm not sure about syncing a particular folder, I just know about syncing a particular branch (which you have done using -b). Need to look it up...

Kovsky Kernel Development [2.6.27]

Guys,
Seems like there are lots of threads popping up with new 'packages'. I thought we should create a thread solely for the discussion of kernel hacks/patches so that we can separate the two:
For those of you who dont know, http://gitorious.org/linux-on-qualcomm-s-msm/linux-msm-xdadev is the repo were are working on.
Just to clarify, this topic is ONLY for discussion regarding Kernel patches. Thanks to vdelf's headset patch it seems sensible to focus on:
1. Backlight always on problem FIXED 01/05/10 (vdelf)
2. Battery Issue FIXED 11/05/10 (drlucky)
3. Camera
4. USB
5. GPS
Makes sense. Lets add USB to the list. While charging works, data transfer does not. Also USB might allow us to debug kernel/android on the x1 and that is what dev's always dream of
:suggestion: why not add the latest kernel as download in the 1st post if there is progress. So everyone know where to download the latest updates u ppl do

@dexteral,
Anyone can checkout the kernel from the above repo I posted. To do what you require we would need to upload the Kernel everytime someone adds a patch...

Is data transfer even possible in haret? I mean how would system unmount sdcard if it's running from sdcard itself?
not fast data but normal will work

Hi, Lets add fm-radio to the list
Great idea ... otherwise we are creating such a mess with lots of different kernel versions in different threads.
If anyone is interested in compiling the kernel as well as the wifi modules, I have setup a VMWare debian appliance containing all necessary tools and scripts to compile everything. Since this is a few hundes MB, I haven't got a place to upload ... need to check this first. If you are interested, let me know.
@drlucky
Have you had a chance to look at the backlight issue? I am almost out of ideas
Can you post your modifications on the microp-module and what you found out until now?

Just played with the klt-driver a bit. I always get version 0x0000, which on a hero means "bootloader mode". I have tried to migrate the hero code, but with no luck. It seems that the microp-klt needs a "reset", which shoudl be done by using a magical GPIO (on hero: 76), but this doesn't currently work at all. Kernel boots up, but still gets no valuable version number.

[Kitchen][Online] website which lets anyone bake a rom

Hello, i'm a web developer and have no experience in developing android roms. Anyways, i'm planning to develop a free website which will let any developer create an online kitchen for his rom, where users like me can come and bake rom according to their needs. Now as i don't have any experience with cooking roms, i would like a little help from the developers. Help i am seeking in is, what features a fully customizable kitchen has, how to change the update.zip for the changes, and adding applications to the zip. I have a little bit idea, but want a clear process.
you will get flamed for this

This really is an admirable goal, but you're attempting to bite & chew WAY more than your mouth can handle!!!
You're a web developer, good.
You have no experience in developing android roms, bad.
You want to develop a free kitchen, good.
You have no experience with cooking roms, bad.
You want developers to help you in exchange for a free kitchen for their rom, bad & good.
You don't know how to update the "update.zip" file and re-sign it, bad.
You don't know how to add an APK to the above mentioned "update.zip" file and re-sign it, bad.
You have a little bit of an idea, but want a clearer process, bad.
All of the above noted BAD points, have been discussed, referenced, and linked on these forums countless times shararti.
You really need to search, read, search some more, and apply what you've learned.
I too am a Web Developer/Designer. I've been in the business of creating websites since 1999 (off & on). And the above mentioned project it something I WON'T EVEN DARE ATTEMPT.
Good luck!
I did search, countless times, everywhere. But as lack of my experience with rom development, it was quite confusing. Well I do know signing and adding apk part, and the rest, i agree, i need some help. I'm willing to give my summer to this project and develop this kitchen for the xda community (i'm also willing to give it away to xda). Now if anyone is willing to help me, please pm me.
Actually, it isn't that difficult.
There are quite a few scripts and programs that you could simply employ on your website. I'm sure those developers wouldn't mind
You would have to tier your ROM baking based on the major ROM cores, and the features swappable between flavors of those cores.
It's simply letting the user choose what he wants in his base ROM, pushing the files into the zip, and running the script to sign them.
I'd be glad to guide you in the structure of ROMs, and showing you what can be mixed and matched.
PM me. We'll get started.
Sounds like a very cool idea and I wish you all the best and hope you find some programmers willing to teach you about roms, and you can do the web coding and make your idea a reality.
I'd use it for sure, would be wicked. Imagine going to this web page on your N1 customizing a ROM, building it and then flashing it. All without going near a computer. Sounds unreal!

XDA is such a huge resource, full of solutions, bricked devices and lost newbs LOL.
After trolling for a few months, I was ready to flash my first WinMo SmartPhone a few years ago. I haven't used a 'regular phone' ever since.
This would be an ideal summer project. As I said, I'm also a Web Developer.
Hit me up for some theme/template ideas. I do most of my work with Notepad++ and Adobe Fireworks CS4.

hhmm, never thought of that!
You're right ... sounds unreal!
Something the iFans would never be able to attain.
Even better, how about, instead of flashing some large file, only the ones affected by an update are flashed, resulting in a much SMALLER file (thus saving on data usage) and a FASTER flashing (saying on battery life).

Well it all depends on what you want. I would suggest you have a base rom without the boot.img stored with minimal capability in a folder. then allow the user to choose what type of kernel and capabilities they would like with it. That will be the minimum amount for a rom. Then you can follow it up with additions such as extra scripts and applications that can be added and moved to the appropriate directories. at the end, you would zip up the selection and sign it, with the appropriate update-script (which should be the same as the stock rom's unless the additions require something drastic)
So the folder tree should look something like this for one specific ROM:
ROM/ROM Core Files (this is the base rom without boot.img)
ROM/ROM Core Files/META-INF (this is for the update zip)
ROM/ROM Core Files/system (this is where the system apps go)
ROM/ROM Core Files/data (this is where certain apps go)
ROM/ROM Kernels (this is where kernels are/boot.img)
ROM/ROM Kernels/boot.img.1 etc
ROM/Modifications (this is where apps and other mods go)
ROM/Custom Build (this is where the baked rom should go)
Then all you need to figure out is how to move everything to the custom build directory
Move the core to custom directory and a boot.img (rename it from whatever it is to boot.img) and then move and modifications to the appropriate directory inside the custom build folder. Then zip the custom build folder and sign it
That should be about right. its 3 am here lol so i may be missing something. pm me if you need more help or post here
Exactly.
The great thing about it. The ROM core files can be optional. You can bake a kernel or you can bake CM w/ custom kernel and custom mods, i.e. modded phone.apk. You can bake anything and everything.
Mmm baking never sounded so good.

Ok so after reading it 3 times carefully, this is what i got to:
All roms have same common files, which are:
1. the META-INF folder.
2. the system folder.
3. the data folder.
This is a basic skeleton of any rom, and every rom has these exact files.
Now what i have to do is, when a user cooks a rom, i have to pick the required boot.img and put it into the basic skeleton, in addition to any apps/modifications user want. Then zip the whole package and sign it.
Is that it?
PS: you also said that i may need to change update-script, in what cases that would be required?
PPS: Do i have to make changes to some other files too? cause it sounds too easy to be true =p

They usually have the same folders, not files
the META-INF has the signature files but most importantly the update-script which tells the phone what to do when your flashing the update.

that SHOULD be it but remember that you may have to remove some apps from the core files of the rom such as amazon mp3 that people may not want, so you will have to see what apps can be removed and decide whether you want users to be able to remove it or not.
You MAY have to change the update-script if for example you want to put some things in the data partition and symlink them or change the data partition to include the ext partition instead of just for apps. Changes like that are usually for ROMs that are too big to fit properly on the nexus ( youll also have to check the size of the system and data folders to make sure they fit on the phone without modification)
Most of this stuff will be figured out in testing haha but ya at the very basicee its what you have here. You really have to know what you actually want users to be able to cook and then build the kitchen to that effect

I took a look at system folder and it's quite populated. Can you tell me what are the basic files that are common for all roms? For the rest of the files, i guess i'll give the user choice to include them or not.
Also can you tell me what is zipalign? Will that be required in baking process?
And to let everyone know, I have already started the working on the kitchen =]

Well it really depends on what ROM's your looking at. Some devs change the apps to their liking. For example, CyanogenMod has a modified Settings.apk that has features specific to his rom. However, all ROMs have Settings.apk. As such, you will probably have to have a Core ROM folder for each specific rom.
I would suggest looking at other online kitchens and see what features they offer, come up with a specific feature set and then decide what direction that you want to take.
zipalign is a compression technique that optimizes how .apk files are accessed in android. it makes things faster and is not required but would be nice to have. you lose the benefits if you open and modify any files from a zipaligned apk
Let's clear some things up here.
First, core files are not interchangeable between main roms but only flavors of those main roms.
As of now, we have 3 main roms for the nexus one.
CyanogenMod, Modaco Custom ROM, and Desire/Sense Roms.
Each of these roms have their own unique cores amd features and are not interchangeable.
There are flavors of each of these roms.
Flavors of CM has parts that are interchangeable with other flavors but use Cyans core.
Say there is one CM flavor that has some themieing and a few other changes you don't want. You can take the themed files and put them into your CM base and leave the rest out.
You can't put that themeing into a Modaco Custom ROM though.
Kernels I believe are the only things can be put into any ROM base. Most apps are as well.
Now that I look at it. Doing a Nexus One kitchen isn't that difficult but making a full featured HTC kitchen would be a mountainous task. There are so many mods, roms and themes to keep track of. We'd have to designate people from each device forum to feed us the ROMs and parts that are active and functional.
P. S. Lectures are over at 7 today. ill be able to crack down on it with you then
Kitchens are for the Food Network...

boot animations are located either in /data/local or /system/media
radio flash will require you to change the update-script
you can look at the FRF50 update with the radio to figure it out ( or pm me if thats too difficult, its a little late else id do it myself)
Just make sure the radio is excluded by default.
Another thing about radios, the newest radio usually works on older roms, but old radios don't work on the roms released with and after the newest radio.

[ROM] Cyanogenmod 10.1 with App Permission Control (unofficial)

OpenPDroid is an awesome mod developed and maintained by CollegeDev, FFU5y, Mateor, Pastime1971, Syvat and Wbedard that allows you to configure for each app separately exactly which permissions it should have and block or spoof everything else. Unfortunately, it can only be used if the core platform is integrated directly into the ROM. (For more details, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2098156)
Since I have completed the integration anyway during my attempts to fix the HDMI rotation bug (without success so far, I'm afraid) and the current version of CM does not seem to contain any more critical bugs, I thought others might like to make use of my ROM as well.
I therefore hereby present: CM 10.1 with OpenPDroid integration. Besides the platform integration I made the following changes:
PDroid Manager app integration.
Standard CM Updates are disabled by default.
CM anonymous stats collection is disabled by default.
Google Analytics integration has been removed from the CM stats collection module.
Updates and anonymous stats collection can simply be enabled again using the menu. (Warning! Applying a normal CM update purges the OpenPDroid integration!)
I will try to at least provide updates to newer versions at critical update moments and will perhaps provide some more in between.
You'll need to have ClockworkMOD installed in order to flash this ROM.

The main additional problem that this ROM currently fixes compared to standard CM is that of blatant privacy violation.
Since the wakelock issue seems to be related to mobile data use, and I don't have a data subscription, experimentation with this would quickly rack up my phone bill. If someone comes up with a solution I'd be happy to patch it out though.

I assume you're referring here to the swapping of disk names when using MTP. I actually only noticed this bug last night and it should be easy to fix. I plan to have it patched out in the next version.
Update 24/04/13 uploaded, involving official CM patches for MTP storage & power profile settings.

At the Cyanogenmod website there are instructions for compiling yourself. You can apply the OpenDroid patches using the link I included in the post. Make sure to synchronize the proprietary files with those provided by Cyanogenmod or some aspects will fail to work.
@Wenque - As the original CM on which you based this has the incorrectly labelled hardware platform which means it can only be flashed with the one particular version of CWM, could you possibly modify your version so the coding is for X3, not for P880 - then it could be flashed with any recovery.

Thanks for pointing this out, as I wasn't aware that my ROMs still suffered from this problem. I'll look into it.

No problem. I got the 'Status 7' message when I tried to flash it, due to the P880.
This problem goes away with the latest (v6.0.3.1) version of CWM, so it's not massively important I guess. It would be better if CM modified their builds to reflect the correct hardware identifier.
May be worth you expanding your OP slightly to contain a link to the correct CWM - just to make it easier for people to find.

Good idea. I'll probably just expand the model check in the update script for future uploads so it accepts both references.
Update 28/04/13 uploaded, for some improved custom recovery compatibility. As every update, it also contains all official CM patches.
All patches between this version and the last one are minor, so for people who have installed the previous version of the ROM there is no need to update to this one.
Is anyone else having problems with GPS on this ROM? I am going to try going back to all the old methods I used on my HTC DesireS, but thought I'd ask here as well.
For those who wonder what the old methods were, have a look at derekgordon.com

No-body?
I have tried ths both with Derek Gordon's gps.conf modification, and with my own one using just the UK NTP servers and no fancy settings.
If I reboot the phone and run GPS Status & Toolbox it takes between 3 and 5 minutes to get the first lock. This happens whether I do it immediately on reboot or leave the phone alone for an hour first. Once it has established a first good lock, GPS seems to be very good - relocks quickly and stays in the background happily.
The problem is the first lock - it's almost as if the hardware is actually starting off disabled and takes time to warm up or something.
Can someone else using this ROM please test to confirm? I will try this with the standard CM 10.1 build and also with the Stock ROM again, but can't do so for a couple of days.
Update 01/05/13 uploaded. I swapped the default CM kernel with the WerewolfJB kernel (thanks laufersteppenwolf!) and I fixed the headphone button actions (key 248 HEADSETHOOK).

No need to apologise mate. I have tried the WerewolfJB kernel, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm going to look at running the WerewolfJB ROM for a while as GPS seems to work perfectly in that, but hopefully you will get time to build a new version as I really want a ROM with pDroid in it.

All you really need to do is copy the good /system/etc/gps.conf file to the PDroid ROM and make sure that you do not block too many permissions. You are probably using Google's SUPL server to help you obtain an initial location estimation and you don't want to block that if you rely on fast GPS locks.
You can do this by first copying the gps.conf file to a safe location (root of sdcard for instance in /mnt/shell/emulated/) and then performing the following steps:
- Use the terminal emulator with the following commands:
= su
= mount -o remount,rw /system
- Now copy the good gps.config file over the current one (for instance using root-permission File Manager or 'su', 'cp /mnt/shell/emulated/gps.conf /system/etc/' )
- Either reboot now or use the terminal emulator with the following commands:
= su
= mount -o remount,ro /system

It's not that simple mate, but thanks for the reply. I know all about the gps.conf file as we used to have real problems with GPS on my old Desire S. The problem I see with this build and the standard CM is almost as if it doesn't know how to talk to the GPS hardware properly.
With the WerewolfJB build and my own gps.conf file I can get a lock in under 10 seconds sometimes, and always under 20.

[TUT] Implementing EPRJ RIL in Custom Roms by Yourself

A. Why change RIL?
Hey, everyone.
As a user that's been using custom roms since our bootloader was unlocked, I'm aware that some of us have some issue with telephony & mobile data (in short, RIL) - occasionally IMEI wouldn't be read on boot, which would lead to device not being registred on network. Sometimes, the network would "die" in a way - you'd get an error when trying to dial a number, and when someone would call you, they'll hear the ringing tone while your cell phone would not ring at all.
The cause of the problem seems to be some lazy coding by official CM developers/maintainers for our device. This was picked up by a developer named kholk, so he did his best to recode it properly, however it was never included into official CM device tree for reasons unknown to me (more info about the issue can be found here: http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/47980/).
Kholk did include his own custom RIL into his EPRJ roms, but the roms are kinda old and have iffy baseband (which seems to be kernel issue, as he's using his own, 3.4 kernel instead of CM's 3.1 kernel in other custom roms).
So, with the help of Adam77Root, I've learned a way on how to implement EPRJ RIL into other custom roms (since I still had RIL issue with default CM RIL in 4.3 roms even) - so far I've tested it with Vanir 4.3, Carbon 4.3, Carbon 4.3.1, and few 4.2.2 roms, and I havent had ANY issues I had in CM RIL.
So, this is a tutorial to show you how you can import EPRJ RIL to any custom rom you'd like, in case you have issues with cell connection.
-this should work on any kernel and any custom rom (4.2.2+)! Tested so far, as far as kernel goes, are iodak 8/8.5, WWJB8/8b, Optimus Prime several versions, Optimus Play! 2.53.
-KK roms tested are P.A. by @dcos which has eprj ril by default, official CM nightlies and several others
-some KK roms, for some reason, don't have x3ril.smali file in their telephony-common.jar. To implement EPRJ RIL in these roms, follow the tutorial up to point 5, and skip that one, since you don't have anything to delete. After point 13, you need to do one additional thing - you need to edit ROM's build.prop settings, look for this line: "#ro.telephony.ril_class=X3RIL", and delete "#" so this line would be included in build.prop. After that, you're ready to flash. Thanks goes to @gerciolisz for the tip on the build.prop settings.
-/As of 24.01.2014. i've added another zip file which contains x3ril.smali taken from P.A. port by dcos - i'd recommend using this one for 4.4.2 roms/
-as of 11.06.2014., I've added x3ril.smali (it's in omni-v1.rar) made by adam, which is based on omni's RIL but has eprj RIL recovery. if you're on 4.4.3 kitkat rom and have issues, i suggest you give this file a try first before others
B. What's needed?
First off, you'll need a few things:
- Android Multitool from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2326604, many thanks to @Flextrick
- Read the linked topic - it's the instruction on how to use it, and in case you encounter any errors, that's the place to search for solutions
- Attached is a RAR with two files in it, X3RIL_old.smali and X3RIL_new.smali. You need only one of those - but more info about them will be in the other steps.
- Custom ROM you want to edit
- Common sense
- WinRAR & JAVA
C. How to change RIL?
Steps:
1. First step is to open the .zip of your custom ROM you want to edit, and search for system/framework/telephony-common.jar
2. Extract it to AndroidMultitool/Files, and after extract is done, delete it from .zip
3. Open Android Multitool, under Decompiling select .jar, then select telephony-common.jar in AndroidMultitool/Files, click "decompile"
4. After you're done, check if there were any errors in the Log, in AndroidMultitool main window
5. Head over to AndroidMultitool/Decompiled_jar/telephony-common/com/android/internal/telephony and look for X3RIL.smali. This is CM's RIL implemented in custom roms, which we dont need anymore, so delete it
6. Now, you need to decide wether to use X3RIL_old.smali, which is RIL from EPRJ CM10.2 built on 20130813, or X3RIL_new.smali which is RIL from EPRJ CM10.2 built on 20131007. I'm using 20131007 atm, and it's working without issues
7. When you've decided, move it back into AndroidMultitool/Decompiled_jar/telephony-common/com/android/internal/telephony and rename it to X3RIL.smali
8. Back in AndroidMultitool, under Compilin, select jar, and for folder select AndroidMultitool/Decompiled_jar/telephony-common, press "compile", and check for errors in Log
9. Output should be classes.dex file under AndroidMultitool/Compiled_jar
10. Open telephony-common.jar in AndroidMultitool/Files with WinRar - you should see META-INF folder, with classes.dex file
11. Delete classes.dex file in WinRAR
12. Move classes.dex file from AndroidMultitool/Compiled_jar to telephony-common.jar opened in WinRAR
13. Paste telephony-common.jar into system/framework inside the custom rom .zip file
14. You now have modified ROM ready to flash on our device!
D. Thank You's
Thank you's go out to @kholk for his RIL programming, @dcos for first implementing EPRJ RIL into a rom (his P.A. unofficial port for our device) different than EPRJCM10.2, @Adam77Root for his tutorial that I basically beutified and made sure is easier to understand & his modification of x3ril.smali from omni, @gerciolisz for the tip about build.prop settings, @Flextrick for his Multitool with neat GUI to extract .jar files, and all the other devs of p880 making our device worth every dime I've spent on it.

Dude, i think you missed out the clarification for the users on whether or not they need to use the EPRJ Kernel and if anykernel will still work or normal kernels will work etc. Because your bound to have the first person to ask a question will either be, "How do i declare java paths" and "Will 'kernel name here' work with it", this isnt me asking, more of an fyi post (Y)
I do apologize about it, but saves you the time and effort of answering the question every day
MOD EDIT: watch your language please.

np, thanks for the tip. i'll add in OP that it works with any kernel
MODERATOR EDIT: @penguin449 watch your language
I flashed Vanir nightly 171013 with Optimus Prime 2.70 kernel and telephony was completely disabled. I was not able to find or register to the mobile network. I tried modifying the RIL file as explained in this post; initially with the "new" file which didn't seem to solve the problem (still didn't get signal) but I didn't wait I immediately tried flashing the ROM with the "old" RIL instead. Initially there was no signal although I was able to find networks, but after a reboot the phone finally managed to connect to the mobile network.
I'm not sure whether it would've worked after a reboot with the "new" but I'm guessing if it's working with the "old" RIL I got nothing to worry about right?
Vanir is 4.3.1 while OP is for 4.3, i think thats your problem. Different RIL would not help in that case. Flash Anykernel version of OP, or find a version repacked with 4.3.1 ramdisk. Good luck!

As far as I understood, the 171013 version did not have the RamDisk issue so I figured the CM10.2 version of Optimus Prime kernel should've worked correctly?
So I get it from you that if I flash the original rom with the AnyKernel version of OP it should work fine? (no need for any RIL modifications?)
Yep, anykernel versions of all our kernels xcept iodaks should work on any android version without any modifications.
Is there a way to do this with Linux?
If not, how about uploading modified telephony-common.jar for CM ROMs?
I tried just replacing the whole telephony-common.jar file but I couldn't send or receive any messages. Everything else seemed to work though.

not sure really, since i havent worked on linux systems.
and i dont think telephony-common.jar is universal for all roms (i might be mistaken though), so there's no use to upload it. however, if you want, upload your original telephony-common.jar file here and i'll do my best to mod it for you!

I'll test the Vanir one and report back.
If it works then there's a start. I can send messages so it works so far. The only thing keeping me from staying on a CM ROM is the random signal loss.

If you can then that would be great. A download for each CM ROM would open up custom ROMs like never before.
Sort out the SD card/internal memory paths and stock ROMs would be not worth installing.

if you've got the time and the will, be my guest - however, i don't think it's quite worth it. Not many people have this issue, and those that do would be better off fixing it by themselves then downloading aged nightlies for the rom they're looking for.

hm, switches from 3g to 2g seems to show that there is a bad connection where you're at. try enabling 2g only or 3g only in custom rom options or quick tiles, most roms support it these days. that should save your battery for few more %.
Just wanted to say that since replacing the file I haven't had to reboot once to get SMS or network to work.
That's over a month, whereas I was having to reboot about every 2 days.
The G/3G switching has improved, but still more sensitive than stock.

I'm on a odexed ROM (mokee 4.2.2 release) so I don't know what to do with classes.dex file multitool generates. It was meant to be used for deodexed telephony-common.jar files. So I tried these steps:
1_)deodex the ROM (using deodexer 4.3),
2_)implent RIL
3_)odex the ROM(using universal odexer 6.3.1) again which I failed to do as something was wrong with decompiling before odexing. This is probably happening due to deodex process.
I got bootloop after odexing the ROM.So I'm curious if there is a way to do this on an odexed jar file without having to deodex first.
I also tried to simply delete the odex & jar file and replace it with deodexed and eprj RIL implented jar file but the rest of the ROM was odexed so it gave me a bootloop.
I don't know much about these stuff, but I did my best searching for a solution and I'm out of ideas. All I want is to have an odexed rom with EPRJ RIL implented, I'd appreciate any help

unfortunately, i encountered the same issue, and it's beyond my knowledge on what to do with odexed roms. i bypassed the issue by using a nightly which came after the stable was released (not sure if there are any for mokee though)

LineageOS 14.1 Berni's alternative builds

Hi all:
This is a thread for my alternative LineageOS 14.1 roms for suzuran.
I'm building these roms from time to time for my own needs and I think other people should participate.
Since the "official" development of LineageOS 14.1 has been stopped, I decided to build a new version only if the Android security patch level has been changed or I've changed anything.
Download 2021-07-19
This is a 7z archive with the zip'ed rom and the md5 file in it. Please unpack this archive, copy the included two files somewhere to your device, reboot into TWRP and flash this zip file. Enable zip verification and md5sum checking. Maybe you have to rename the md5 file to *.md5sum; depending on the TWRP version you are using.

Important informations:
You should be familiar with general installation of custom roms.
Required for installation: TWRP 3.1.1 (or newer).
OR use my self built TWRP-version 3.5.2!
No need for making a clean install, but sometimes it helps a lot!
This rom is pre-rooted. For those who want to use magisk or any other rooting tool, you can easily remove this by flashing this file.
Use this rom at your own risk! It comes without any warranty! I'm not responsible for any damage! If you don't agree with that, don't try to flash this rom in any way.
Differences between my version and the "official" one:
Kcal Display Driver - Thanks to @GreyLeshy and @Sony user 16
Voltage Control - Thanks to @GreyLeshy and @Sony user 16
OMS-Support - Thanks to @nathanchance
Added F-Droid and UnifiedNLP! If you don't want this, simply de-install it.
I've included some little extensions like changelog and volume adjustment.
I've set maximum speaker volume to a higher value.
I've increased microphone gain.
I've increased all volume steps from 7 to 15.
I've changed the microfone gain to avoid echo in phone calls.
I've enabled data for MMS.
I've enabled MHL.
Not working:
VoLTE, VoWiFi
If you want to use encryption, you have to disable SIM PIN first!
One (last) request: Please don't ask for including any app. I won't do this, because I want to keep this rom as clean as possible.
Changelog
Troubleshooting:
If you're running into an error, please search in this thread if this error is already posted, before you post it again!
If not, I need a LOG to see what went wrong. Without a LOG I can't help you!
A LOG can be fetched by connecting the device with an USB cable to your PC and then by typing these commands line by line:
Code:
adb root
adb shell logcat -b all -d > logcat
Send my this LOG file via PM.
If you think this could be a SELinux related issue, please try to set the device to permissive mode first.
If the issue is gone, I need the policy file too (plus LOG). Fetch it by typing this line in a terminal:
Code:
adb pull /sys/fs/selinux/policy
If you stuck in a bootloop you can fetch a LOG with this trick:

Hi @all:
First of all, please excuse my bad english...
They said I should create my own thread for my alternative LineageOS 14.1 roms for suzuran. Here it is.
I'm building these roms from time to time for my own needs and I think other people should participate.
Download
Kernel sources
Tree sources
OS Version: 7.1.2 Nougat
Kernel: Linux 3.10
Required for installation: TWRP 3.1.1
Important informations:
You should be familiar with general installation of alternative roms.
I've included some little extensions like changelog and volume adjustment.
There is no need to make a clean install, but sometimes it helps a lot!
Use it at your own risk!

As I said a few days before: I don't want to include gapps! If somebody wants to use gapps, feel free to flash them separately. You can download them here. You need arm64 and 7.1 for suzuran.

Substratum support is not longer available, because the devs have stopped their development for Nougat since august.

I agree gapps should not be included. It is easy enough to just flash it right after flashing the rom
I am thinking about official vs rom, I think the two roms are probably nearly identical. Probably the most important factor will be the frequency of updates.

You can use AdAway which is an open source host list based ad blocker. See https://adaway.org

I don't see a reason to bake something into the ROM when there are many apps that can do it.
I think something like Xposed-type tweaks being put into settings would be more appropriate. Alleviating the need for xposed. But I don't think it makes sense to load random apps into the ROM.
New version; please have a look at the first post

Awesome work, thank you so much! Flashing it now.
Just 1 question - do you know if encryption works on your builds?
I've never tried it. I've not so good experience with encryption on a stock rom; so I've decided not to use this feature at all!
Hi Bernhard.
Thanks for your hard work!
i have a question for you.... As i understand it you take all the changes/updates from the offifcial lienage and implement them into your own build. And add the changes as described in post 1.
Am i right about this?
I think that battery life is bad on the official compaired to the version you do.
Do you add battery improvements in your build?
Thanks in advance.

Oh, it is not so hard to do this, but, thank you! Sometimes I have to search a few hours or try (and revert) something, but in the end I've gotten everything to work as I like it to work.

I'm using the LineageOS repositories from github as they are, that's right. I don't use my own repo's; nzzane is doing this AFAIK (Klick). A few weeks ago I'm using other repo's, because LineageOS had bad (will say: not working) sources for our devices.
And add the changes as described in post 1.

Yes! :good: One or two of my changes should be implemented into the "official" builds, but until now I don't understand how to use "commitments". Maybe in a few days...

No. Nothing like this.
On my own device battery life is about three days...

Like other persons, I don't want to have a lot of applications include in the rom. I want to choose the ones I use. This is one reason that made me come to alternative rom.
Another reason is that Lineage use less google s"hit" than stock rom.
So if you have the vision of more app and google stuff include, you better stay on stock. Alternative Roms offers me more freedom; but that's just my opinion...
This is prerooted? There are some of us out there that need to install certain apps before rooting.

That's so great to hear, let's hope they get accepted.
Huge thank you for keeping this device alive Berni!
