Applying RyanZA's lagfix from a x64 system - Vibrant Android Development

So I've been reading about RyanZA's lagfix and it seems awesome but on the topics it keeps saying that if you flash from a x64 system it won't work or if it does, it will have lots of bugs.
Can anyone confirm/deny this? Or write some steps on how to do it from a x64 system. I only have my x64 machine and I am seriously afraid of bricking the phone cause I paid $550 for it. I'm not too familiar with ODIN to be a pro at flashing so I'd rather NOT have to go to that option.

Works fine for me. Just make sure u have the USB drivers installed. I did it successfully with one click method with lagmefix bat, and the update zip method. Quadrant scores 2200s

If your not comfortable using odin then I strongly suggest you not do anything to your phone. Odin is your last line of defense, I would learn how to use that first before doing anything to your phone as anything can happen no matter how careful you are.
Also this question should be asked in the general section.
Feel so Vibrant!

First, I've applied the fix from my x64 system, twice (windows 7 x64 and osx 10.6), and didn't have any issues at all, so I don't know where you read that. I also reverted, and don't run a lagfix anymore, because of file system corruption issues.
Second, you WILL have issues with the lagfix, eventually, if you don't flash JAC's kernel or another hack/kernel with init.d support to run a filesystem check on the ext2 partition at boot, as ext2 can become corrupted quite fast.
Third, if you're seriously afraid of bricking your phone, why do you want to hack it at all and void the warranty?
All of the tweaks and hacks in this forum will be very experimental, and sometimes changing almost daily. With all of them, bricking is a risk (albeit a very small risk unless you're flashing the EU I9000 2.2 beta firmware) but a risk nonetheless.
Lastly, if you're still scared of applying the fix from your x64 system, just push the scripts to your internal sdcard and run the commands manually from a terminal emulator on the phone. I'm sorry for coming off so cold, but if you can't figure out how to do that, why are you in the Dev forum?
good luck, and cheers,
=)

^^^^This is what you want to do minus the update.zip I have a Widows 7 x64 system and have done the lagmefix.bat to my vibrant and to my friends captivate with no issues at all I've been running it for awhile and everything is still snappy. I haven't ran the unlagfixme.bat because I like the lag being gone so much that I don't see why I would

I see and understand what you mean with the odin thing. I know how to use it but since I never have, I'm nervous about it. What kind of file system corruption issues are you referring to? And us it advisable I flash jacs thing on it to prevent them? I almost never restart the phone or let it turn off so idk how that would help.
My phone is already rooted and I have made a nandroid but I'm stil nervous simply cause I'm fairly new to it, not cause I'm not willing.

No issues here, on Win7 32bit and 64bit

AlienZ,
I have Win7 64 as well, I've installed RyansZA 1.0, with .zip install and uninstalled.
Installed 2.0 with the script and uninstalled.
Installed 2.3 as and uninstalled with script.
All worked flawlessly.
Also installed Chainfire's 1.8 .exe, and uninstalled. While this lag fix was installed I had some issues with installing APPS.
I got rid of them mostly because I didn't see much of a speed difference other then the Quad score.
Here is my Odin directions after I fumbled my way through it. But more importatly a link to the drivers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7687769&postcount=284

I didn't run RyanZa's fix but chainfire's instead from a Win 7 x64 system with no problems.
quadrant scores are only 1700 but it is using ext3 and checks the file system on every boot

So is there a lag fix which does not corrupt or cause apps to have problems installing?

Theoretically should they pop up the more you use it?
Is there a lag fix which doesn't have that drawback of slowly ****ing your files? I don't care if its a tad slower than Ryan's

I guess anything is possible I haven't seen it happing on mine and if it does I guess Ill be flashing with odin when that time comes, where are you seeing that the drawback of this lag fix is slowly messing up your files ? Check out what Calcvitim was talking about HERE I've never used it but it looks well developed to me.

Please post in the existing support threads for the tool you are trying to use.

Internal Memory is getting full

Hey Y'all,
Anyone know what would cause my internal memory to get about 1mb fuller in what seems like each day. I turn my phone off completely at nite, I am non rooted with OS 2.1
I have even removed some apps to see if this stops. It hasn't Seems like something is writting to my memory with each new startup.
Is there an app, other than Astro or File Manager that will allow me to trim some fat off the internal memory. Also, where (what file) would that be stored in.
Sorry if I haven't explain'd this well but its got me baffled too.
When I updated the OS to 2.1, I was only using about 60mb of internal memory, then I restored all my apps and it came up to about 75mb used, now doing normal daily backups and just normal loads, I have used up 91mb. My backups are saved on the SD, not the internal.
If anyone has any ideas, I would be greatful. At this rate, I will run out of internal memory in about 2 months, lol
any reason why u dont wanna root??? it makes life with android so much easier..
anyway, ur probably buildin up a lot of cache.. if you was rooted you could just use cachemate found in the market and one click would get rid of your cache.. but sense your not, your gonna have to delete cache manually one app at a time..
menu>settings>applications>manage applications
let that load (it will take a min or two depending on how many apps u've got)
after it loads, click menu then sort by size..
start with the first app on the list and click on it.. once that opens you will see "Cache" and the amount (if theres any).. click on Clear Cache.. do that for each app (you will see that a lot of apps are at 0 already so just go onto the next one)
hope that helps..
Not really other than fear of screwing my phone up and not being able to put it back to 2.1 stock. I have been looking over the 2.1 root:

however and I never say never.
Thanks alot for the info about the cache(s). I will give it a try.
I really do appreicate your help.
UPDATE: I just did as you recommended, PERFECT!!
Went from 86mb used to 70mb used. 16mbs more free, I'll take it. Thanks again....

I know u r right, still thinking it over. My problem is really all the people who are rooted and all the problems they are having. This forum has 1000's of the" Help, I rooted and now this or that doesn't work" OR "Help, I just rooted and now my phone is Locked and I can't access anything" that scares me. My phone works perfectly, it tethers perfectly and its the old adage, If its not broken, lalalala....

Well, just cause you root dosent mean you need a custom ROM. You can stay stock rooted and just get the rooted abilities. IE Wifi tethering, Cashe cleaning, a bunch of other stuff.
Most people had the fear of messing up there phone, however as in the previous post you can root and stay with the stock ROM. I have rooted several android phones, not just hero's, and have not once had a problem. I know that some have problems if they are not on Sprint and try flashing a ROM which might changed their profile info. And the great thing is that there have not been any issues with the 2.1 RUU. So if you rooted and had problems, which I doubt, you can always RUU back to 2.1
They're not having issues due to root...it's the custom roms they are loading. I've had mine rooted since last November, and I haven't had a problem with the phone because of root. Now, I have had problems with custom roms before...but the nice thing about root is that you can always reflash to a new custom rom...or you can go back to stock (or stick with stock if that's your preference).
All root does is gives you more control of your phone. What you do with that control is up to you.

Basically, this.
Well thx folks, so if I do this root proceedure:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
, I will have SuperUser perms and tipically NO problems as long as I stick with the stock ROM? Another question, Tethering is very important to me. I currently use PdaNet, will it still work after ROOT plus give me WiFi Tethering too?
Thanks again, this just got more interesting.
Pretty much wifi teather does have its limits but its still pretty wicked
Thx again folks, Ima gonna do it. Seems fool proof and the positives outweigh the negatives. I can also revert to pure stock if all else fails, so, WHY NOT?
Regards,
Soon to be ROOTED!!

Yes I did, I decompressed the 3 files within hero-root.zip to the C:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder.
The funny thing however is in the
C:\android-sdk-windows

adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinsbApi.dll
It this correct?

CFLagfix works on Vibrant

In case anyone was wondering.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751513
I had been using RyanZA's lagfix. I uninstalled it using unlagfixme.bat. Then installed CFLagfix 1.7 using ext3. No other wiping or flashing.
My ROM as shown below.
Quadrant is 1500-ish, as opposed to 2200-ish with RyanZA's using ext2. The obvious is that ext3's journaling is exacting a cost. However, I want it, and noticed lag starting to return anyway with RyanZA's fix.

I think some people just keep imagining problems. Lag starting to return.. new lag fix for one that works great? jesus
To each his own observation. My main reason for switching was to get ext3. Not comfortable with the reported file system errors cropping up in reports in the other forum. Speed is second, stability is first.
edit: besides, half the fun of this phone is tinkering like this.

I don't know, I had file system corruption with RyanZA's lagfix almost instantly, and I don't feel like flashing away from the stock kernel until we've got a full AOSP 2.1 or 2.2 build ready (hopefully with the god awful samsung RFS completely removed!) Honestly, these fixes are all band-aids anyway until someone can find a way to remove RFS entirely.
So for me, I'll deal with the lag for a few more weeks, by then, I'm sure Eugene or someone will be close, if not done, with an AOSP build.
=)
im trying to run it but it keeps locking up at the data/app move. Gonna try it again.
Update: got it working. Had to uncheck the box for data/app.
New quadrant around 1500
I hoping someone will post a solid walk through for converting the virtual loop back EXT2/3 partition from this method to EXT4...
if you're comfortable with odin, flash one of JAC's kernels and mod the lag fix's to use ext4, its what i'm using now.

I meant converting the Virtual loop back partition to EXT4. I have JAC's latest OC Kernel installed right now. You will NEED JAC's kernel if you want the system to even support EXT4 at all.
i was meaning for those that have yet to do it... a nice conversion script or method would be nice, for those that have done it

[Q] First steps for Captivate??

I ordered me a Captivate and it's shipped from MD and should be here Thursday, but in the mean time, I'm doing research on what to do and how to do it.
I found the one click root..Does it work for the newest Captivates??
Lag Fix?? What is it and how do I fix it?
Roms..I'm coming from a G1..Is flashing a rom on the Captivate anything like the G1??
Will the upgrade from a G1 to a Captivate be very noticeable???LOL
Thanks folks

Step 1 : replace touchUI with launcher pro.
Step 2 : wait for the froyo rom to be released.
The lag fixes give you a slight improvment but don't give you much of a real world performance increase, i'd just wait until froyo gets released in a couple weeks.
Agree, it works fine with stock rom and launcher pro. So happy after using those crappy wm devices

Another thing that you might want to do is install SuperRooterExtreme. It roots the phone & installs lag fix & enables side loading & a bunch more all at once. I put it on my wifes & my phone with great results. Vastly improved performance. My quadrant score went from 900 something to over 2000. I also have a G1 and the captivate rules over it.

You'll get different answers. There are people who say theirs works find. But I'm in the camp that believes all are bad, and that you just need to be in the right circumstances to experience the problem.
But I can't imagine that it won't be fixed.

SRE is available in the Captivate Android Development section of these forums. Just make sure you read read read everything first so you don't freak out if you run into problems lol. These phones are hard to brick so flash away. ADW Launcher is another homescreen replacement that has FREE themes you can download and use and its easily found when you search the market. Grab Rom Manager and Titanium Backup as well and you should be ready to go nuts after you root. Some of the downloads in the development section root the phone for you while they also install lag fixes etc. but I'd wait to see how you like the phone before you bother with a lag fix or GPS fix. My GPS is fine but I did use a lag fix because the phone drove me nuts after being used to a tweaked Nexus One for a few months.

i'm in the same boat as the OP and i'm wondering when you upgrade the firmware to 2.2, will you lose all the stuff you've done to the phone (like the mods and stuff)?
OK folks...Having an issue.
I rooted my phone, and I'm trying to get side loading to work...or some sort of app installing thing to work. I tried to flash clockwork but apparently it didn't work(hit with an error after reoping the app) and for some reason Superuser app keeps crashing and none of my apps and get root...Did I unroot it??
I tried to use the "Unleash The Beast" update.zip and thats when everything starting going bonkers..Can I go to stock and start over??
Yes you can flash back to stock with the Odin One Click Downloader...then I'd run one of the update.zips that roots and installs other tools like Busybox etc., just take your time and read the instructions before you try anything new. There are 2 versions of Odin so make sure you have the one from the One Click Downloader post (the other is for flashing roms and kernals, not restoring to stock), and install the android sdk and learn some basic adb commands ( adb reboot recovery, adb reboot download, makes life so much easier). With a little time you'll get the hang of it...just watch out for driver issues and make sure you follow the instructions and you really can't brick the phone. Odin is your friend and you need it anyways to flash back to stock before you try some of the new fixes, mods etc. GL, I won't be around much now as I am forced to sell my phone due to being unemployed but I'm already scheming to get a new one from Amazon for a penny lol.
EDIT: I read the post for Unleash the beast and it says its ok if your already rooted so I don't think that was the problem. Your best bet is to get to a PC or laptop and use Odin to flash back to stock (once your in download mode and the phone is recognized, it really is one click lol) then run Unleash the beast again. If you can't get su to work in the terminal app then you don"t have root, but you do have superuser permissons installed so I'm kinda at a loss. Might as well get used to flashing back to stock anyways if you like to hack and try new things lol I used Odin at least 20 times over the course of a few days!
after reading your edit post, I'm much happier..LOL
I'm fine with reflashing to stock as long as Titanium does my back ups. I was gonna reflash tonight and do as suggested. I'm also fine with Adb. I'm coming from a G1 and Adb is very familiar to me..LOL
Thanks for the info and help and you'll prolly get a Pm from me if I'm stuck..LOL

I spent hours per day for weeks reading through this and other forums I advise you to read read read and read some more before you do anything to it that way you will understand everything a bit better and remember.
for every action there is a reaction
After I found out I was getting one,I searched and read and read some more. I'm comfortable with Adb and the terminal, and after reading about the not so easy to brickness,I'm sorta happier..LOL
I do have an issue tho with Clockwork. After I installed rom manager, I flashed the recovery and rebooted. It booted into clockwork but I didn't know what else to do. I flashed my G1 on almost a daily basis and understand the update.zip files...but where do I get it? I did my backup and its still on my SD card but I'm still using the stock recovery. Do I flash my backup?
I've got my phone just about how I want it and all I'm waiting for are the Rome and 2.2 along with everyone else..lol

alright... i was planning on getting my captivate today cuz ive been dying to get a new phone! coming from a tilt 2, flashed with a ROM from NRG, and running froyo (although it still feels very sluggish lol). i was gonna use my wife's upgrade but isn't eligible till sept 9!! if it were me i would pay the extra $75 on top of the 2 yr renewal but it is her upgrade =p. my question is similar to the OP. but i have a mac and im sure rooting and such is different. ive read in different forums and read read read and still feel uncertain.... ive also watched youtube vids on rooting but still not sure what is the most reliable program... any suggestions or possibly provide the one YOU used to root ur captivate? after rooting are there any other apps you need to dl? not talking about gps fix and all cuz i can wait on that. after rooting, when froyo comes along, will you need to re-root? will u lose everything if you update? before my tilt 2 i had iphone 2g and was very familiar with jailbreaking and all. so i have experience on flashing and jailbreaking and hoping rooting will be as easy =). thank you all for helping one another! keep up the great work!

Since your gonna be on a stock Captivate, you can just use the Unleash the Beast method. Its in the android dev section. Download of and rename it to update.zip and boot into recovery, and install the update. Then you'll be rooted and have the ability to sideload. After you do it, go to terminal and type such..then sideloading..or sideloader..its in the post, and you'll be good to go. Works for me...lol
I'm still trying to get clockwork to work..lol. If you flash Clockwork and can boot into it via the volume+power buttons, please pm me..lol

Well, what happens? Do you just reboot, or do you get options?

I Can attest that this is the real deal. I was having problems getting Jac Kernel to be enabled on my device. I would Install and reinstall eugene froyo then back to stock vibrant and then bionix latest roms only to get 900 quadrant each time after setting up set cpu. I searched the threads for the last two days looking for what could possibly be causing my quadrant to never go past 900 to 950 even though I installed exactly like instructed. I would mount in terminal shell and would get mmc/blk op2 or something which indicated the kernel was not enabled. I downloaded one click lag fix and unrooted but the lag fix couldnt be applied becasue it stated I had a lagfix already applied. WHAT! OCLF gave me the message playlogos1 installed in systems/bin so I read on the threads that you were suppose to delete it but I didnt notice that it also said after you delete to copy it back once OCLF stated that it coudnt be found. OH SNAP! I didnt copy. I googled oops I've DELETED PLAYLOGOS1 what should I do and low and behold In the RYAN LAGFIX threads there was zip provided that would fix anything in your system that would keep the phone from enabling kernel including installing EXT/2 and PLAYLOGOS1 files and others on the phone from a command setup. I did this it took a few minutes to complete while phone was plugged to computer, but once it was done rearranging or fixing what was wrong my phone rebooted I ran quadrant and OH MY GOD. 2695 Quadrant on JAC UV/OC Kernel 1.1 Bionix 1.8 Rom. I swear I can just look like I want to touch my phone and this thing is SUPERFAST and battery life is AMAZING. 2695 QUADRANT WOW. Cant imagine what 2.2 Froyo is going to be like on my vibrant, DO THIS NOW IT'S AMAZING!!

[Q] To Froyo or not to Froyo... that is the question.

Hello everybody. I've never unlocked, rooted, or done any modding to a phone before... I'm also not much of a unix/linux guy, but have SOME familiarity with it.
OK, so.....
I've been doing some reading around this forum & am still confused about some things, and also have some questions I haven't found answered. I apologize if these have been asked/answered elsewhere, but I have tried searching.
1. Some terms are used in this forum that I am unfamilar with: adw, adm? jig?
2. After flashing to froyo, everyone has the same Android Device ID? So, how do you restore your own ID, I haven't seen this answered anywhere.
3. I've seen people mentioning phone batches... what is this info needed for? Mine is batch 1009 if that matters.
4. OK, so if you screw something up & brick your phone... you can use ODIN w/JF6 to fix this? There is no way to be unable to un-brick your phone, as long as you have ODIN & JF6?
5. I've downloaded the GalaxyS OCR software, but you still need to use another program to flash your ROM file over? Am I understanding this correctly?
6. Where do I get the ROMs for froyo.. and what is the easiest software to use for flashing the rom? I see people mentioning Cognition a lot, but they also mention some others like Axura. Is there a definitive comparison of the various ROMs someplace that I am missing?
Thanks in advance everybody!

Adw is a launcher
Not sure on adm
Jig is a device some have put together and used to recover from brick
2. After flashing to froyo, everyone has the same Android Device ID? So, how do you restore your own ID, I haven't seen this answered anywhere.
There is an app on the market android id changer. I believe you need to be rooted. Download app, click save id. When you load a froyo rom some will automatically use the saved id, others may not. In the case that it does not get same app load id, click change. Phone still reboot id will be changed
3. I've seen people mentioning phone batches... what is this info needed for? Mine is batch 1009 if that matters.
You should be fine. I am the same batch
4. OK, so if you screw something up & brick your phone... you can use ODIN w/JF6 to fix this? There is no way to be unable to un-brick your phone, as long as you have ODIN & JF6?
Odin will save you from just about everything. Couple things, only works on pc. Download drivers for the phone prior to flashing anything. Make sure your phone is recognized by the pc. Attempt to get into download mode. Pull battery, sim, external sd. Put battery back in. while holding volume up and down plug in usb while connected to pc. Screen should show orange guy with shovel. If works just pull battery to get out of that screen
Attempt to get into recovery. Volume up and down and per at the same time. When at &t screen comes up, let go of all three. A screen should come up with blue letters
If you can not get into either of these I would not flash
5. I've downloaded the GalaxyS OCR software, but you still need to use another program to flash your ROM file over? Am I understanding this correctly?
Yes
6. Where do I get the ROMs for froyo.. and what is the easiest software to use for flashing the rom? I see people mentioning Cognition a lot, but they also mention some others like Axura. Is there a definitive comparison of the various ROMs someplace that I am missing?
Roms can be found in the captivate development section. There are several froyo roms.
You install roms using free app, rom manager. Download app, open, top option says flash clockwork recovery, click and scroll to captivate. This puts an update zip on your sd card. Power phone off. Get into recovery, three button combo you tested before. Navigate in recovery using volume up and down, select with power. Scroll to reinstall packages. You may get butted back to the same screen, click reinstall packages, will take you to a green recovery screen. Reboot phone.
Find the rom you want and download, can be done directly on phone. Move file to the root If your sd card. Power off remove sim and external sd. Make sure your battery is fully charged. Open rom manager app. Click install rom from sd. Navigate to file, select clear cache and data. If you want to backup your current state there is an option to do so. Click ok, put your phone down, be patient. Couple minutes later you will be booting into your new rom.
Hope this helps
Thanks in advance everybody![/QUOTE]

Personally... I don't know if everyone should be trying to install custom ROM's on their phones.
Alot of people have too many issues figuring out how to root, sideload enable, and then download ROM Manager to install a custom ROM. Then when things go south they don't know how to restore their phone and end up having to warranty it.
Doing any of the above will immediately void your warranty.
But... with all that said I'm running a "stock" Eclair OTA JH7 right now with a few tweaks - and I really can't say I'm missing all the "Froyo goodness" at the moment.
I've rooted and allowed non-market apps with CLShortfuse's One-Click Root program.
Then I downloaded a Lag Fix (RyanZA's OCLF) from the market... and the phone has been screaming along just fine.
And of course.. GPS still doesn't work - but at this point I'm used to it.
No issues with headphone's not working, or terrible battery drain, or the other myriad of issues you will find by installing the latest and greatest. So... rather than start in with the latest popular ROM - I'd just Root and apply a Lagfix and see how it goes from there. If at that point your really comfortable with flashing a ROM - go for it.

OK, so I've dipped my toe in & rooted the phone using TGA_Gunnman's "GalaxyS_One-Click_Root_All_Models"
According to the program, I'm rooted. Phone rebooted into that recovery mode & I chose "Reinstall all packages".
Phone rebooted as it's supposed to. Went into Market, all seems good, but I can't find this OCLF you mention. Searched on RyanZA, OCLF, and also "lag fix" but don't get any results... ??
Also, The AT&T programs are no longer listed under my applications manager, were they uninstalled by default? I still see a couple of AT&T apps when I go to view all applications, but can't find these apps to uninstall in the app manager section.
Thanks!

OCLF I believe had been taken off the market but I would not suggest using that program for anything other then rooting your f device
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
So it has... whats the deal?
Not sure why it was removed but I only used it as an easy way to root. The lag fix on that app was an ext 2 lag fix that is obsolete. If you are willing to apply a lag fix and want froyo read the cognition, perception, auxura, etc threads in development and decide which one you want.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
If you just want your phone to work, I'd suggest just doing one of the lag fixes and staying as "stock" as possible. There's a one-click root/unroot for the captivate for rooting. The rest is up to you. But, for me having exchange support for work is a must and Froyo works perfectly with my company's exchange set up.
If you're a "tinkering" type of person, then go for some custom stuff! I believe best way to learn is just go do it. Read through the development section for a week or so (post your questions in this section though... devs seem to be a little snippy lately) and have fun. Odin has saved me from bricking my device a few times. Like was said before just make sure you download and test working usb drivers and can that you can access your device from windows.
Good luck!

ARG! I flashed Perception build 5 without backing up my original device ID. What is the importance of the device ID?
If I go back to the my stock ROM backed up with ROM Manager, will it still have my original device ID?

The market and some games access it. So with leaked froyo, when everyone has the same id it causes issues because there can be like a thousand people with the same id trying to download at the same time.
As far as the games,i never had a problem do I can not say which ones and what the issue was

AT&T applications are system applications and therefore do not show under the default application manager view. If you are still "stock", you would do Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Press Menu button>Filter>All. This will list all the applications on the phone. Be careful what you try and remove if you do this. Remove the wrong system app and your phone will dump. Most system apps won't let you remove them this way, you would have to use ADB or Titanium Backup to remove.
Search and read. Good Luck!
iirc batch 1009 doesnt have download mode.
you should flash the one click that enables the 3 button download mode before you do anything...
then make a jig so that you can recover if anything ever messes up...
then go nuts and flash 10x a day.
Ah thanks for the info, that shows them. So, I havne't done a thing other than root the phone so far. I've been trying to find the 'lag fix', but haven't been able to. I have however found a lot of posting on how the lag fix makes the phone much faster, but also drains the hell out of the battery. Any opinions on that? That's really all i wanted right now, a faster phone & get rid of some AT&T apps. One of them seems to run all the time (I use my wifi a lot), is it safe to kill AT&T Hot Spots, or will I lose wifi connectivity if I do that?

The only lag fixes out there come with custom roms or kernals. Battery life depends on the rom but common sense would dictate if you are driving 100 mile per hr it will take more gas then going 50
I do not think you will have any issues killing at&t hot spots. It is gone from all custom roms so it can not be too important. Do not mess with anything google especially gtalk

Thanks for the info! Well, I've bought the paid version of Titanium Backup & just backed up the phone; and I have Odin w/the correct ROM file, so I may start delving a little deeper into the phone now.
Any suggestions on a ROM for someone that just wants to speed up the phone a bit & lose the ATT bloatware? Don't really care if it's 2.2, I can wait for the official to come out & be ROM'd up by the geniuses here

If you do not care about 2.2 a good starter rom would be cognition 2.16. You can get it here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
Click on get cognition here. It will bring you to a page with a bunch of links. Personally I would use the 2.16 without hsupa. If you never use bluetooth then it does not make a difference. This rom uses the voodoo lagfix. The only downfall is that everyone had moved to 2.2 roms do if you post questions in that thread I am not sure you will get much back.
If you are going 2.2 I would read and try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856877
Perception is also an option but from what I am reading I would not flash the latest update until it gets worked through some.

I am probably not the best to explain this but it is a faster upload and download capability that us not standard on the Captivate. Meaning if you have it, and the data in your area is strong, you should have a faster download/browser experience
