Possible to select text without trackball? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there an app or hack I can apply to select text without using a trackball. something like the iphone with its magnifying glass

That was my biggest hurdle when switching from iPhone to Nexus 1. You can use your fingers to press and hold until the menu pops up, but then it's still pretty much the same thing as using the trackball.

The HTC desire has an excellent magnifying glass type of copy paste like iPhone. It's been talked about porting it to the nexus but it just hasn't happened yet. It probably needs all the sense UI frame work files along with it which is why we haven't seen it ported yet. Google's implementation is pretty lame, I'm not sure why they haven't improved it by now.

Clearly not the best solution but you can do.
menu->more->select text
then just select the text you want to copy

Well if you dont mind switching to sense theme all together you could give this ROM a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730290
As mentioned above it has a great text selection mod like the iphone, and the theme isn't so bad either

Depending on the app you're in you can double tap at the starting word and drag to the end word. It works in the Stock Messaging app on Froyo. Also in the browser.

GDE 0.1 available in the market

Not going to spam the sapphire forum, but because i mainly live in the G1 area I would like you all to know that I have developed a whole new Home Replacement called GDE. It has transitions like a cube, configurable toolbar buttons etc etc.
A link to the G1 thread ( with all features and some movies ) so i dont have to copy all of it over and over:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4698010#post4698010
I have tested this on a G1 and a G2, but it should also run great on a Sapphire. If anyone has tried it please let me know how it works on your devices!
Downloaded to my mytouch and so far i'm liking it.
Couple of suggestions
1. For the option on the launch bar to bring up the phone, can you make it bring up the dialer and not the recent call list? kinda like the Hero
2. Now, when you press the menu button, the app tray pops up. I'd prefer if the normal menu would pop up. The one that has the option to change wallpaper, notifications, etc.
3. if there is a way, when trashing an icon, to make the whole bottom bar the trash, not just the bottom left corner.
4. the possibility to skin the launcher. (edit: i see in the original post that you said your working on this)
bugs i've noticed:
-when # of visible screens is set to 3 and default desktop is set to 1, you can not scroll all the way through. if you swipe right or left one time thats all that you can do. it doesn't allow you to swipe again to get to the home screen. edit: i forgot to mention that its when its in stretch mode and it doesn't work on any configuration (ie default desktop 1,2,etc). it works fine on cube
-when changing an option that require the restart of the launcher, it pops up the last used application such as sms or gmail.
thanks
Thanks for your input,

1. For the option on the launch bar to bring up the phone, can you make it bring up the dialer and not the recent call list? kinda like the Hero
That indeed could be something to look at... i will look into it
2. Now, when you press the menu button, the app tray pops up. I'd prefer if the normal menu would pop up. The one that has the option to change wallpaper, notifications, etc.
The hard-menu button will be configurable in the near future, so you can set it to open up any menu you like i.e. settings... The control panel is going to get a lot bigger so it should allow you to do "almost" all things you were able to do in the past... and some more of course
3. if there is a way, when trashing an icon, to make the whole bottom bar the trash, not just the bottom left corner.
Well when you drag the right button will change into the trash... The left button is also context sensitive and in the future this will bring up a settings menu in which you can uninstall the app etc etc. I will give the icon the original red corner because the hit area isnt as clear this way ( its much bigger then you will think )
4. the possibility to skin the launcher. (edit: i see in the original post that you said your working on this)
bugs i've noticed:

The other transitions dont have endless scroll "yet"... I am working on implementing this into stretch and fade. The original transition can never support this, because of some technical reasons.
-when changing an option that require the restart of the launcher, it pops up the last used application such as sms or gmail.
thanks
I will see if i can make it so that it comes back to life again... it now forcefully kills GDE to clear out everything

Once again thanks for your input... this is what hopefully will make it the better home replacement.. If you ever come up with ideas, notice bugs or whatever dont hesitate to contact me
One thing i forgot to ask... Can you tell me how the transition speed is on a sapphire? I havent had a chance to run it on one... for now only the G1 and the G2.
On the G2 the cube transition is really fluid... So i hope it will also be on the Sapphire as they are the same hardware/memory wise if im not mistaking.
There are two versions of the Sapphire, one with 32B and one with 32A board. All Google/Vodafone/TIM/Provider branded sapphires are the 32B versions... which has ~182MB RAM, all sapphires with a HTC logo at the front are 32A and have ~290 MB RAM...
So your statement was partly correct
Loving the looks of your launcher by the way, reminds me of LG phones though ^^.
Ok thanks for the clarification and for loving the looks of course
I must be honest... I have never had an LG phone nor seen the interface.. So if it does im a good copycat without knowing ..
it seems pretty smooth. there is a little lag intermittently but not horrible. To get a good comparison I would need to have another phone to compare it too. But so far I'm liking it.
A thing I would like to see is a dock of 4 customisable icons (like the iPhone has yes...) and a shortcut on a different place to pull up the menu The 4x4 crap stucks :/ the 3 buttons take up too much space... I want my own icons there
I downloaded ur app btw because it has so much potential

By rights if it's fluid on the G1 it should be on the Sapphire as they're so similar. I've tested tried it out on my 32B and the 'stretch' and 'fade' effects are as smooth as silk, though 'cube' is alittle clunky even with the CPU at 528.
I'll throw in an iddy-biddy suggestion/request; could we get a configurable bottom-bar in a future build? I'd love to may it a bit darker or semi-transparent. Either way, no biggy.
Overall this is a killer Home replacement, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it mature. A big thank-you to you, Rogro.
Additional: Scrolling through the applications list is really choppy in both grid and list.
Thanks for the reply.
I will look into the grid/listview on my phone the listview is smooth although the grid suffers some lag. its related to the transparancy, but i will fix it asap.
About the configurable toolbar... I am working out the whole theming support, so hopefully soon you will be able to adjust it to anything you want it to be.
Thank you Rogro82 !
i made a video ( 0.1.1 ) to show all transitions and some options.

[Q] [Request] android fanboys don't read this

Okay to start off I love my nexus one and would not buy an iphone so all the android fanboys don't jump on my case. But there are some software aspects of the iphone that i like. For instance I like the way messages show up on the lockscreen on the iphone and the iphones multi-tasking. I was wondering if it would be possible to implement the iphone style of multi-tasking into the nexus one. Basically the trackball can still be used for selection and all that good stuff if you even do that, but if you double tap it at a selectable speed it would open recent apps. Or even go further to make the scroll bar that the iphone has. Give me some response on this, tell me what you guys think.
what is this...i dont even?
what is your question? I want to somehow have a setting in the nexus one where if you double tap the trackball it will open up recent apps and possibly implement an iphone like scroll bar at the bottom.
Sorry for asking but.... Are you sure you know how to use your Nexus ?
yes i know how to hold the home button... lol

and? why would you want to double tap your trackball? you know iphone do that because they only have one button right?
also it would create huge issues for selection with trackball...
Let's say while wanting to double tap the trackball for multitasking, you had something selected, the first click should theoretically open that app/link directly...if we implement such feature, people that actually use the trackball for opening stuff will have delays, which sucks massively.
All in all, this idea is awful. You can make the number of recent apps higher in Cyanogen, do that and you won't need the scrolling bar of the iPhone...
If you want to double tap something, download QuickDesk PRO and set it to open on double tap of home key. It has a 'QuickPanel' feature that shows recent apps and its a fantastic piece of sofware.
For the messages on lockscreen.. download WidgetLocker and place Pure Messenger Widget on the lockscreen..
chompSMS does this lockscreen "thing", and even allows you to reply to them without unlocking, if you so wish, and relocks after.
For double-tap home, there's literally loads of multitasker apps that can do that, even offering "coverflow" style switching between apps...
Itching thumb is another good task switcher. nice looking graphics and gesture support.
Use HandcentSMS to replicate that better than Iphone experience
just get an iphone.
then you can try that, and maybe you'll go back to the nexus one, maybe not.

Nice first post
OP, the reason double tap is a feature on iPhones is because of the lack of buttons. Steve only likes to push is customer's buttons, not his phone's
(horrible, I know lol)

Unfortunately it does not seem to work with CM61/ADW, only see 1-3 apps. Also the 'styles' preference is disabled.
wow lots of activity just got out philosophy class so its alil hard to comprehend all of it but, I am gonna try the lockscreen thing and the double tap the home button sounds really good. The thing that i got annoyed with holding the home button is that sometimes it will accidentally go to the home screen. LOL I don't want the iphone... my mom, step-dad, and roommate all have them lol. Android is where its at. With all these customizations you guys have told me about I am satisfied.
if you hold "home" button the last used apps would appear and that also means those apps would open faster which leads you again multi tasking. ok, I admit that's not a user-friendly way to access the apps but theyre going to fix alotof stuff like that in gingerbread.
There's also a program called Smart Taskbar. I didn't like it, but perhaps someone else will..

have you thought about running miui for rom?

[Q] Make N1 look like iOS for April Fools

So for an upcoming April Fool's joke I want to get my N1 to look like iOS. Any suggestions as far as ROMs and themes go? Icon packs should be easy to find. I'm pretty sure I could toy around with LauncherPro to get the general look, but the key to a good April Fools is in the details. That includes the Notification bar and some of the built in apps (Dialer, email, etc.) if possible. Splash and bootanimations would help too.
MIUI would do the trick very well. Visually it's pretty much iOS copy.
MIUI rom looks like IOS, check it out in development area if nexus one.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
MIUI always struck me as more of a TouchWiz clone than iOS, but I guess with some tweaks it would work... Probably a better start than CM at least. I guess it'd be too much to try to get the trackball to work like the app button on iOS and make the other buttons do nothing...
Scratch that last post. I didn't notice they've completely moved over the widgets and everything. MIUI should work nicely (assuming I can get the Notification bar done properly). For the button trick I'm thinking of just playing with the key bindings to get that to work and using QuickDesk for the double tap functionality. Anyone know what their app button does on a long press?
On iPhone4, if I'm not mistaken, it brings up the task manager.

I thought that was a double tap. QuickDesk has a "QuickPanel" that shows the recent apps. If I just have that with no icons on the rest of it, it'll look really similar. Close enough that even an iOS user might not notice the difference (which is the ultimate goal)
One thing I miss from my iPod is being able to tap the top bar and have it take me to the to of the page. Would that be doable?

Just changing it out isn't the prank, but it is a necessary part of the gag as a whole. At this point I've got the whole thing themed, slide to unlock looks right, the wallpaper doesn't scroll, double tapping the home button acts properly, and I've got a good plan of action for the face buttons. I'm down to two problems, the first being much more important: getting the Notification Bar to look like their Status Bar, and getting the icon jiggle when the launcher goes into edit mode(I'm using MIUI). I'm thinking I might have to change out the status bar layout xml in framework-res.apk. Does anyone know if there's a better way or if this will even work?
Anyone know how to implement the Universal Search feature of iOS? True the search widget more or less replicates the functionality, but I need it to look like and behave like Universal Search (needs to become full screen, and a second press on the home button needs to return to whatever home screen you were on). ideas?
ok, I am totally stuck. It looks like the notification bar is gonna be more than just a quick xml changeout in framework-res.apk. services.jar will have to be edited too. Does anyone have any experience at all with moving icons around on the status bar?

35 HTC One tips and tricks

http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/htc-one-tips-and-tricks
Introduction
The HTC One is the most desirable new phone in the world right now. Metal-bodied, great-looking and a seriously powerful gadget, this is the mobile that could turn things around for HTC.
We've spent weeks fiddling with the phone, and here are best tips, tricks and hidden features we've found.
Interface
How to change keyboards
One of the few software criticisms we made about the HTC One was that its keyboard isn’t exactly the slickest in town.
However, one of the neatest bits of Android is that you can swap-out things like keyboards.
The first thing to do is to head to the Play Store to find your perfect Android keyboard.
The most popular third-party one is Swiftkey.
Once you’ve downloaded your keyboard, you need to select it to act as your main keyboard within the Settings menu, from the Language & Keyboard submenu.
However, many third-party keyboard apps have their own setup wizards anyway.
Enabling Swype-style input on the keyboard
There are ways to customise the standard HTC keyboard too, though.
The most important is gesture-based input, which we find speeds-up typing no end.
Instead of tapping away on keys, you draw a line between the characters and the HTC One calculates which word you want.
It works a charm too. To turn this mode on, go to the HTC Sense Input menu within Settings > Language & Keyboard and tick the Trace Keyboard checkbox.
How to customise the apps menu
The HTC One lets you fiddle with the look of the apps menu a little.
You can choose how icons are organised, and how many appear in each row.
As standard, it displays just three in each row for a chilled, spread out look. To bump this up to four, drag the apps “scroll” down to reveal the app menu’s Settings bar.
Tap the 3-pip icon and you’ll see an option for Grid Size.
The organisation options are found in the drop-down menu to the left of the 3-pip button.
How to change icons in the HTC Sense dock
The easiest-to-access app shortcuts of all are those in the shortcut dock, which stays on-screen in both the apps menu and your home screens.
You can choose what’s in this dock on the apps screen.
Just hold a finger down on an icon, whether in the dock or not, until the screen zooms out a little then drag it on, or off, the bar.
You can add app folders to the Sense dock
Folder functionality lets you keep boxes of apps on the apps menu – just like those of the iPhone iOS software.
These folders can sit in the main shortcut dock just like a single app shortcut.
They’re added in the same way too.
How to take a screen grab
Unlike most older Android phones, the HTC makes it dead simple to take a picture of whatever’s on-screen.
It’s the perfect way to capture an amazing score in a game that doesn’t have some of form of brag function as standard.
To take a grab, press the power button and the Home soft key at the same time.
The pic will be then saved to the phone’s gallery.
Installing a custom UI
Do you outright hate the Sense UI? Do not fret as you can swap it out for another one.
Whenever you press the Home button, it’s actually directing you to a home screen “app”.
Install another and you’ll get the option to be directed to one other than HTC’s.
Top candidates include Nova Launcher and ADW.Launcher.
To find a bunch, just search for “Launcher” in the Play Store.
Adding widgets to a home screen
Here’s a nice basic one that most of you probably know already.
To add a widget to a home screen, just find a bit of empty space on a screen and hold a finger down on it.
This will bring up the widget control panel.
Two-thirds of the screen will be made up of a box of widgets, with the other bit left for teeny versions of your homes screens, onto which you can drag widgets.
How to customise the lock screen
The HTC One lets you control what your phone’s lock screen looks like, but you don’t do this from the lock screen itself.
Instead, dive into the Personlize menu within Settings.
Here you’ll find options for home screens that incorporate music players, your calendar or photo album.
You can even turn off the lock screen entirely.
Modifying LED notifications
A neat little hardware feature that barely gets any attention is the HTC One’s LED notification light, which sits behind the top speaker grille.
You can control which types of notifications earn the notification LED flash within Settings > Display, Gestures & Buttons > Notification Flash.
You can’t control its colour though, sadly.
BlinkFeed
How to get rid of Blinkfeed
You can’t get rid of Blinkfeed entirely on the HTC One.
HTC is clearly that bit too proud of it.
However, you can hide it from view.
To do this, you need to create another home screen to use as the face of your phone.
HTC veterans may want to include the classic HTC clock, which you’ll find in the HTC One’s treasure trove of widgets.
Next we need to set this screen as the default home screen.
Hold a finger down on an empty bit of home screen, waiting until the widget drop screen pops up.
At the top of this screen you’ll see teeny versions of your home screens.
Hold a finger down on one of these and a Set as Home Screen option will appear.
Tap it and Blinkfeed will be gone.
Well, more or less.
Adding sources to Blinkfeed
Like Blinkfeed?
It works best if you customise it with the sorts of info you want – whether that’s tweets, Facebook updates or articles from the internet.
To do this, head to your Blinkfeed home page and drag down on its panels to reveal the settings bar.
The triple dot button here takes you to an area where you can add Blinkfeed sources, while the drop-down bar to the left lets you pick between types of active source.
Camera
The filter button
The HTC One’s camera filters selection is so up-front that it’s actually pretty easy to miss.
The filters button is the icon that looks a bit like a colour venn diagram, sitting below the camera/video select buttons within the camera app.
HTC offers a bunch of filters, including creative ones like a distorting warp and customisable vignetting.
How to turn on Zoe Mode
Zoe mode is one of the key features of the HTC One.
It takes a short video clip that can also be sliced up into twenty still images.
One of the neatest parts of Zoe mode is that once it’s shared through HTC Share, a short URL is produced that makes sharing the video with friends dead simple.
It also allows re-touching, including removing objects from the video.
We’ve had trouble getting this to work properly, but you can find the feature by inspecting a Zoe vid in the gallery, tapping Edit and then Retouch.
You’ll find Object Removal in this menu.
Best settings for general use
To get photos with the most detail, we recommend at least trying out using HDR as your go-to photo mode.
HDR stands of High Dynamic range, and it combines three exposures to eke out as much detail as possible.
As the HTC One is so powerful, the processing only takes a second or two – it doesn’t slow you down too much.
Unfortunately, we can’t see any way to get the HTC One to save both standard and HDR shots at the same time, as you can with an iPhone.
How to auto upload photos to Flickr
If you’re a big photo sharer, you can set the HTC One to automatically upload your songs to the ‘net.
You’ll find this option right down the bottom of the camera app’s Settings menu.
As standard, the only option is to upload to Flickr for HTC Sense.
Wireless camera shutter
A neat hidden feature of the HTC One is that you can use a Bluetooth headset to take photos you’re when within the camera app.
Hold down the central button on your remote and the camera will take a shot.
Audio
When to use Beats Audio
Beats Audio is a signal processing mode that’s used in a fistful of HTC phones.
It’s designed to mimic the style of the Beats by Dre headphones – that means a lot of bass for that booming club sound.
It works wonders on the internal speakers of the phone, cutting out the harsh mids, but with a decent pair of headphones you’re best off without it unless you have a craving for more bass.
How to turn off Beats Audio
Don’t like the sound of Beats Audio?
You can switch it off – as standard I’ll turn on automatically when you play music.
You’ll find the switch for the feature on the top layer of the settings menu, under the Phone subhead.
Quick music navigation
If you have a big music collection on your HTC One, flicking through all your tracks or albums can be laborious.
To make it quicker, use a two-fingered scroll.
This cycles through letters of the alphabet rather than entry-by-entry.
Video
How to play any video on the HTC One
The integrated video player of the HTC One offers much less than flawless video codec support.
If you have a library of videos downloaded from the net, many of them probably won’t play.
To fill the gaps you’ll need a third-party app, preferably one with its own hardware acceleration.
Our go-to pick is MX Player.
How to transmit video to a TV
The HTC One does not have a dedicated video output socket.
However, there are a few different ways to get your videos over from the phone to your TV.
The neatest of the lot requires a special accessory, the HTC Media Link, a box that connects to your TV.
This lets you swipe any content over to your TV using a three-fingered swipe.
Alternatively, the microUSB socket on the phone is MHL compliant, letting you use it as an HDMI port with the right connector.
You'll find these online.
Hardware
How to reset the accelerometer/gyroscope
This is one most of you shouldn’t really need, but is useful if you find accelerometer games are way out of whack.
You can re-calibrate the accelerometer and gyroscope manually – these sensors can tell what angle the HTC One is being held at.
The calibration works much like a spirit level, and is the G-Sensor Calibration option within Settings > Display, Gestures & Buttons.
You’ll find it right down at the bottom of the menu.
One way to diagnose touchscreen issues
If your HTC One’s touchscreen has gone a bit dodgy, you can try to diagnose the problem using the phone’s Developer Mode.
This is a set of options you’ll find in the Developer Options menu within Settings.
The one we’re after is called Show Touches, which shows little circles where the screen is sensing points of touch.
Hard-soft reset
Software misbehaviour can often be cured with a simple reset.
You can turn the phone on and off again, but getting the good old “pull the battery out” effect requires an HTC special move.
You could rip off the back, but it’s not something we’d recommend. Instead, hold the power button down for ten seconds to simulate the cutting of power.
A prompt should pop-up warning you that the hard-soft reset is about to happen.
Battery
Sleep mode is key
The HTC One has a battery saving mode that’s crucial if you want to have a phone that’s able to last more than 24 hours.
Sleep Mode, an option found in the Power sub-menu of Settings is one of the most important to switch on, as it turns of 3G when it’s not needed.
3G is a real power-sucker.
You can also select how intensive the Power Saving mode is in other respects.
Turn Power Saver mode off in the Power menu, then tap the Power Saver menu option (not the slider) to select which parts of the phone are throttled by the mode – CPU, display, vibration feedback and the data connection.
Apps and Games
Enable non-Google Play apps downloads
Unlike iPhones, Android phones can install apps other than those downloaded from the official app store.
However, this feature is disabled as standard – mainly because some (well, many) apps from the net will be infected with malware.
To turn off this security measure, tick the Unknown Sources box in the Settings > Security menu. Android apps online are shipped as APK installer files.
To install them, transfer them to the internal memory then find and run them using a file browser app like ES File Explorer.
Enabling offline speech recognition
Virtually all top-end phones offer pretty serious voice recognition these days, but you generally need to have internet connectivity for it to work.
The HTC One lets you download a pack of offline voice recognition data to let you use it when you have no Wi-Fi or mobile internet reception.
You’ll find the option to download the pack in Settings > Language & Keyboard > Voice Search.
How to stop the phone auto-creating app icons
The HTC One automatically creates home screen app icons and widgets for downloaded apps.
It’s a way to stop you having to curate your own home screens, but some of you may not like the clutter.
To stop the HTC One from doing this, go to Google Play, head to its Settings menu (accessed through the 3-pip button at the top-right of the screen.
Here you’ll find a tick box for auto-add.
If screen brightness goes down while you’re playing a game…
One curious thing we’ve noticed while playing games on the HTC One is that the screen brightness can unexpectedly dip.
The reason why is simple – the placement of the ambient light sensor means it’s easy to cover the thing up, or shade it, with a hand when the phone’s held in landscape orientation.
To avoid this, try turning your phone around.
Simples.
Security
Backing up to the cloud
The HTC One comes with an allocation of HTC online cloud storage.
You can set the HTC One to automatically back up your data to this storage, or you can use Google’s cloud servers.
You’ll find this option in Settings > Backup & Reset.
You can also make the phone auto-upload pictures taken to Flickr.
You’ll find the auto upload function in the Settings section within the camera app.
Lock screen security
A lock screen security layer is hardly the height of security sophistication, but it’s the best way to stop being stitched up on Facebook if you’re in the habit of leaving your phone lying about when with friends.
We’ve all been there.
Within the Screen lock menu of Settings > Security you’ll find options to use a Pattern unlock, a password, a PIN number or Face Unlock.
Our top tip is not to use Face Unlock as it’s pretty useless as security measures go.
And it makes you look silly.
Browsing
Get straight to Google
The quickest way to get to a web search on the HTC One is using a clever Google shortcut.
Hold a finger down on the phone’s Home soft key and you’ll be taken directly to the Google search page.
Using Google Now
Google Now is a recently-introduced Google service that’s designed to pre-empt what you’re going to look for.
It does this using info cards that appear on the Google Search page.
If you’ve been searching for places in a certain location, Google Now might offer up directions as to how to get to that place.
How to go full screen in the stock browser
If you want to make the full use of the HTC One’s 4.7-inch screen when browsing the web, you need to enable full screen browsing.
This hides the address bar, giving you that extra bit space for web sites.
To find the setting, pull down the address bar and tap the three-pip button to bring up the menu.
Scroll down to Settings, tap General and select the Fullscreen tick box.

I seem to have gotten myself in trouble with this. When I tried to drag an item off the dock and onto the home screen, it made a copy on the home screen but kept it on the dock. So I tried dragging a new item to the dock, and ended up with a folder containing both the old and new items. Now, I can't find any way to get rid of that folder which is stuck on the dock! Anyone know how to do that?
Edit: Never mind, I found the answer here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235130
Is there any way to get Google Now to respond to the "Google" voice prompt like it does on other devices (including the HOX)? Kind of a pain to hit the mic icon at the top of the screen when using the One one-handed.
Has anyone tried "light flow" for the notification light to see if the colors are able to be changed?
And has anyone installed swype/swype beta? I'm sure it also works with the H1, just curious.

The only phone from Samsung that has a led is the gnote 2 and sgs3, I can't think of any recent (within the last few yrs) Samsung phones with led. I do know my HTC g1 back in the day was able to have different colored led. Hhmm...interesting. Can't say I've ever heard this about HTC. Thanks.

Samsung did manage to put a RGB LED in the Nexus 10, surely at Google's behest.

This isn't working for me. When I select an icon in the dock and drag it to the top of the screen on top of the 'uninstall' nothing happens, and when I drop it onto the 'desktop', it simply replaces itself with another one in the dock. Trying to add different icons doesn't work, either. Any help appreciated. I don't use text messaging and would far prefer to have my Email and Firefox icons in there instead.

Well this didn't tell people how to turn on HTC Zoe so, for those who aren't aware, go into Camera and at the top of the screen in the middle you'll see a small camera icon. Click it and it'll turn blue and will also display another camera icon near the bottom of the screen which says "Zoe" next to it.
Also, the best way to get the Zoe features working isn't actually by capturing a Zoe. When you're in normal camera mode, hold the bottom capture button and it will take a shutter shot. This will produce lots of pictures which were captured during the time you held the shutter button.
Once you've captured what you desired, go to edit the photo and use the editing options available to you.
Why is this easier than snapping a Zoe?
The answer's simple. Zoe shots only give you a limited amount of time and can be awkward to use some of the editing features. Using the shutter button, this isn't a problem.

It's important to note that if you turn off Beats Audio, the speaker playback quality is actually quite bad. Maybe it seems worse because I'd gotten used to the effect of Beats but it definitely has a big drop in quality.
I haven't tested this through the headphones, however.

Switched to English (US) and it works fine now.

Trying to decide on custom ROM

Hi all,
First off, I'm new to these forums, so please excuse me if this is the wrong place to post this question.
I recently got a HTC One and i'm looking to replace the standard ROM/firmware with one of the many custom ROMs. My main reasons are that i do not like the default Sense theme, i want to be able to customise things, and i want to be able to uninstall (or at lease, stop from automatically running) pre-installed apps like Facebook and Twitter.
I've looked at a few, and so far I really like MIUI. I like it's theme particular, and that it appears to be very customisable. ViperX says it's very customisable too.
So to help me decide, can you please answer some of my questions:
I currently use the Nova launcher to replace the default Sense one. Will i still be able to use this with any ROM?
Will i have to do anything with the service provider / carrier, like re-setup connection or something?
Can i still keep the default apps installed by the service provider. For example, there is one app that provides access to un-metered services (weather, news, etc) and shows data usage.
Do any have better text navigation? I'm frustrated with the standard text input, double-tapping on a word does not always select it, i have to tap multiple times before it brings up the menu to paste, cursor positioning is awkward. In iOS, you can double-tap then hold and drag to select multiple words (like in most desktop OSes). iOS also has better rules concerning when to make letters uppercase, especially when deleting/undoing text.
Are there any other sort of usability things to look for in custom ROMs? Things that would set one apart from the others?
As for a theme, I like the default MIUI one. If i don't go with MIUI, i'd want a theme like it. Matte, light grey background (possibly with black title bar, status bar, etc), orange highlights (on controls like progress bars), round borders. Gnome/Tango style icons. At the least, i could create my own theme based of a similar one.
Anyone?
I'm also not sure about device support. The only thing i can find on Viper X is an XDA page that mentions HTC One X. Is that different to HTC One?
Other ROMs mention support for specific HTC vendors (all American i assume). I got mine from Telstra in Australia, does that mean i should look for an "international" version of a ROM? What if there are none?
Hello?

1.You can use any launcher on any rom no problem
2.Once you perform a factory reset in your recovery, you phone will direct you to set up up your phone (the setup changes if you install and aosp rom)
3.Most of the custom rom on xda like to debloat (take out the carrier apps) their roms. If you want to keep your apps you will either have to find a rom that doesn't take away those apps (ie a stock rom.) or you could go with an aosp rom that completely gets rid of sense and it's carrier apps. Or if you know what carrier app you want, you could download root browser and take the apk from your system/app folder(this may be tricky because you the apps are labeled differently
4.I'm pretty sure you are supported see to hold on to the word you want to select.
5. You have to look at the features they offer. Like on Viper 2.70, you can customize various things with vemon tweaks that other custom roms don't offer.
If I helped hit that like button

1. You should be looking for ViperOne in the HTC One international thread(it just says htc one, no other carrier names attached) >android development.
2. Not sure about Australian phones but as long as it isn't a sprint phone you can flash any rom although most roms are in the international htc one thread anyway.

Thanks for your help.
About #3, it sounds like you are saying i can look for the apk on the phone, back it up somewhere, then re-install it once i flash the custom rom. Is that correct? Could there be any sort of problems with installing such an app on different firmware?
About #4, it's kind of hard to explain, but i just don't like the way the text manipulation is handled. It feels awkward and sometimes doesn't do what i want it to. I press to select or insert something, and it does nothing- I have to try a number of times before it will work. Sometimes double-pressing will zoom the page instead of selecting the word. Just little things like that.
In the end, i guess all ROMs offer similar features, customizations and tweaks. I think i'll just go with MIUI, since i really like the default theme.

Yes extract the apk from you carrier rom. There shouldn't be any compatability issues since it's just an apk.
I came from an iPhone but I don't understand what you mean. On Android double tap is supposed to zoom and on HTC we have text wrapping which zooms the text to the zoom magnification which no other manufacturer has anymore.
There are plenty of themes you could download that look like miui. Even a custom launcher like themer offers extensive themes which look amazing.

Ok, try this:
On Windows, in a text editor, double-click on a word then drag the mouse while still holding down the button (i.e. don't release after the second click). Notice how it first selects the entire word, the starts selecting whole words as you drag.
Do the same thing on iOS. Double-tap and drag. Same thing happens.
Now try it on Android. Notice that double-tapping will select the whole word, but moving your finger doesn't do anything. You have to actually let go, then grab one of the markers to select more.
As for the zoom, i know double-tap zooms non-editable text. This is the same on iOS. But there have been occasions (and this may be the fault of the application) where i double-tap in a text field and this slightly zooms the view instead of selecting the word.

I'm sure there are themes that look similar to MIUI, and i've even seen one for CyanogenMod that looks pretty similar. But with so many to choose from, i'd have to try many before stumbling upon one i liked (although that's not necessarily a bad thing ).
And what do you mean by custom launcher themes? As far as i know, all custom launchers can do is change the icon set, not the whole chrome. That is, they cannot change the Sense blue and black theme to a light grey and orange. Or can they?
Ok, how about i change the criteria. Which is the most stable, with frequent updates? And which one has the most customisation options for developers or "power users"?
A little more information about the 4th bullet. I noticed you mentioned something about how letter case is handled. The HTC keyboard is like stupid when it comes to manually editing previous words. I think I know EXACTLY what you mean. LoL!!
I hated how if I spelled "hunhry" and erased "hry" and started typing "gry" it would start auto-correcting only the "gry" part. I would recommend using a different keyboard. If you don't know which one to use, you can't go wrong with using the Google Keyboard. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.latin) It's basic enough. It's also the one I use.
As far as selecting text, you can try enabling this.
Go to...
Settings --> Accessibility --> Under the "System" tab check "Show magnifier". This makes a little magnifier when you're selecting text. This may help with precision.
Also, why do you double-tap the words? A press and hold selects the word for me. That may help when trying to select words. And if you see from my screenshot, with the magnifier enabled, it will be easier to pinpoint exactly where you want to go when selecting more than one word. So I press and hold; it selects the word for me and also brings up the twin sliders; after that I can easily drag the sliders to select what I want.

Hi No_Nickname90, thanks for your feedback.
Regarding the keyboard, i don't use auto-correct, as i prefer to be in control (if i make a mistake, at least i know it's my fault!). If i can't get used to the stock keyboard, i might try another.
As for why i double-tap, did you not understand my example? I can't see how i'd be able to select multiple whole words in a single motion if i pressed and held. If holding selects one word, then I imagine if i moved my finger after that, it would move the selection to a different word rather than extending the selection. I really need an animation to explain this...
Anyway, i have decided to go with MIUI. If i don't like it, i can always change later.
When you press and hold, the slider comes up. Then you can control the slider and select text like that.
So it's press and hold until the slider comes. Then release and the slider will still be there.
It seems as if you're double tapping and on the second tap, sliding. I've never done that nor have I seen that. That's why I'm confused.
When I just tried to do that, all that happened was the position cursor sliding, not the selection cursor. LoL!!
Have you played around with the keyboard settings? I think there is one rule about how text is capitalized. Also, there should be a setting to calibrate the HTC keyboard to your texting. That may help when texting, should you go back.

Before my HTC One I used apex launcher. It was free and provided stock aosp. It also had icons packs like NOX compatible with it which makes my icons uniform and amazing. A lot of people use Nova which provides the same things but to experience the full content you have to buy the launcher.
Themer is a new launcher that is still in beta buts it's pretty amazing. It takes predefined home screen layouts for Mycolorscreen.com and applied them to your phones with widgets wallpapers and animations (much like buzz launcher.). If you are looking for a stable launcher apex or Nova is the way to go. But if your want themes and cool changes to your home screen (you might find an miui theme you like) with a little less stability, Themer is the way to go.

I don't think a launcher will quite do. As far as i know, a launcher cannot change the skin for the entire device. For example, it can't change the theme of menus or stock apps.
I just found out that MIUI is only available for HTC One via an unofficial ROM. There is an official version coming, but i don't know when. Perhaps i'll wait for it. Or maybe i'll just go with another ROM like Viper X...
