Hi,
great site........
I'm trying to get my 2.1 software upgraded HTC hero back to 2.0. My phone worked great with my in car blue tooth system before the stoopid 2.1 update and I just need it working again.
please help...
Thanks guys........

There is no 2.0. It's either the original 1.5 or the current 2.1. You can root your device and install a custom ROM of whatever you can find here if you choose. There is a really nice version of 2.2 in the Dev section if you want to go that way. If you do some searching you'll find all the info you need to accomplish this.

hummm? it must have had the 1.5 then prior..........
I wonder if the 2.2 would fix my issue.....
let me see if i can find the threads your talking about...
Thank you,

2.2 has a rc1 and nightly builds. May or may not work with your Bluetooth better, it does not have sense. I prefer that, its quick and zippy.
Otherwise I'd suggest trying the custom 2.1 roms and if they don't work and you want to go back to 1.5 I highly suggest digging up an old custom 1.5 rom rather than go stock.
You might even get some help figuring out how to get the drivers from 1.5 into a custom 2.1 or maybe 2.2 if you're patient.

I don't know if another 2.1 would help you, don't they all use the same bluetooth stack?
Do 2.2 ROMs use the same bluetooth stack?

Not positive but worth a try. If 1.5 stack worked I thought maybe it could be merged or swapped into a 2.1 if he wanted to do the work. I could be wrong

2.1 bluetooth drivers were pretty broken. I highly recommend trying 2.2, as it is much improved

Loading the xml files to Tasker
I am a new just a few weeks into Tasker and I see all of these great xml files people have created, however, I do not know how to execute them once I have loaded them into my tasker directory in my phone. I have created a few simple things and I am reading some articles called Pocketables and other things about Tasker. But I have seen all this xml files that are already built and "ready to go" but I can not load and execute them in Tasker and can not find any material where it defines "how to."
I have tried various ways unsuccessfully and if some gentle soul would like to give me a hand I would appreciate it. It would appear you would create a Task and select a category, then file, but this is where I am really hung up at this point. I have tried various different ways and so far nothing works. Gary

To be honest, I think the latest cognition ROM is way better than the leaked froyo. Faster, smoother, just better. And cognition of course has sideloading enabled.
Coginition question?
I read a little about the coginition roms. They seem really nice but could you answer a few questions.
1.Can you start out with the lastest rom first?
2.I read that it is really hard to go back to your original flash enev if you have a backup.(I did make a backup.)
3.I am not being a smartass but, could you please answer my first questions in my first post please.
Thank you for replying so fast.

Thank you for answering my question.
If i was you I would leave 2.1 and add side loading, lagfix remove blootware and you got a pretty good set up, I have flashed most of the Roms here and I wont say with one is the best becouse each one has it flaws and I think just the leaked Frito has the most bugs tho design gears is basing his cog on it so he fixes stuff as he goes

This thread is for issues related to the rom. Likes and dislikes are user based and will not do any good as for what to expect and all custom roms are a best for you type of thing. I could say that I like this this and this about the rom but some one else would say that they dont like the same things. See my point? Each rom has an outline for the rom in the first post.
Love the rom. I'm on 2.1 and have noticed my camera won't work, just FCs. Extracted some old phoenix and SN roms I had on my phone and tried to copy the .apk and camera firmware into system/app using root explorer and reboot. No luck. Any ideas? I would prefer not to reflash.
Thanks in advance.

In addition to the point that each user/device could respond differently to the ROM/Modem/Kernel. The 3 of us could be running identical setup's and all have very different experiences

I am running;
Rom: super nova 2.1
Kernel: speedmod-k13b-500hz #54
Baseband version: i9000ugjk4
The problems I am experiencing aren't a major deal, just thought I would mention them.
1. When I am connected to wifi and try and use the Facebook app I get a connection timeout message. While using at&t data I don't.
2. I get a FC when trying to open the Fox News app.
Enjoying Adams and teams work, thanks.

Try restoring the stock email.apk that came with the rom, no idea why they're tied together but they are.
As for FCing on the Fox News app, I got that too and just uninstalled it, not sure why it was doing that.

Has anyone checked their "About Phone" info under the settings after flashing the 2.3 download and still see their "Build number" as Supernova 2.1??
Shouldn't this be 2.3 instead of 2.1 or was the revision number suppose to stay the same this update?

Thank you for letting me know. I went through a few pages, but I must have not looked at early enough postings to see anyone comment about it.
I could tell the update took effect when the kernal was updated to Speedmod and some other graphical difference when flashing from 2.1, but just wanted to make sure.
Also, does anyone know where to grab the 2.1 ringtones from the zip file? There was a nice one in there that I'd like to get back.

I am on 2.3 and this is my favourite one so far. Really enjoy the Phoenix team roms. With other roms I have noticed that when you touch the screen the soft home keys do not light up. If you touch the keys themselves they light up for only 3 seconds. I found I had to use an app/widget called keep the lights on for that issue. With this rom however, the soft keys work perfect. If I touch anywhere on the screen they light up for 10 seconds or more just like my stock did.
If I ever check out another Rom is there something I could import from this to keep that great feature? I don't think I will be flashing for a while after this one. But once flashaholism sets in sometimes I have no choice...lol

Thinking About Migrating
Hello all, I've been a loyal Perception user since I purchased my Captivate and tried out several of the active ROMs. I've started to look for a new ROM since DG announced that the Perception line was defunct. I have a few questions regarding Supernova:
1) Are there other themes, loaded stock, with the ROM. The black one from the screenshot isn't really my style.
2) Does this ROM include the three-button fix? My phone is one of the unlucky few that cannot boot to recovery mode via button holding.
3) For those of you who have flashed many a ROM and decided to use Supernova, what do you like about it best? Why did you select this ROM over the others available?

1) Yes there are other themes, I am currently running SN JS5 version and using Nunhugger's Absolution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10254722&postcount=5
at this point, it appears most JPY/JS5 themes will work with any JPY/JK3/JS5 ROMS
2) My phone also does not have 3 button. But it has the extended power menu, long press on the power button gives you the option to boot to Download, Recovery, Reboot, etc.
3) Honestly, I move between Phoenix, Supernova, and FireFly. Adam and Team have a level of detail I havent seen around, but the big part is the support. There is NO flaming on his threads, so people arent affraid to ask question if they cant figure something out. They are all solid ROM's very stable, very well put together. In the end I couldnt tell you one of them is better than the other, just a little bit different
it's a long way to go.my captive's screen is so cool.
So what I have done to date on my Captivate.
1. Updated to latest Froyo 2.2 using Kies
2. Loaded .NET and etc
3. Rooted using SuperOneClick. Thanks ShortFuse
4. Titanium Backup. Thanks Joel
5. Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine. Thanks Android Central
6. Captivate Toolbox. Thanks Bay_wolf
7. Installed wireless tether 2.0.7 Thanks harald.mue, ulfada
8 Pimped my Captivate- Thanks systoxity, nbs11, and other XDA developers.
Now I'm to the point to ROM or not to ROM. Everything is working great. Further I am hesitant about the possibility of bricking my phone. Should I go for it? What ROM to use? What program to get ROM on phone?
Many thanks in advance.

It really just comes down to if you like your Captivate the way it is. If you aren't happy with the performance you get from it then try a few out. I recommend Cognition for a stock like experience and Serendipity for the most stable and kept up to date ROM.
This really doesn't belong in this section. It should have been posted in the General or the Q&A sections.
Well what you have done in all those steps, other then Titbu is actually done in one step by flashing a rom.
If you pay attention to the steps your risk of bricking is minimal. Just read all the rom threads and see which one floats your boat. Cognition 4.1.1 is a very stable rom. Firefly is another stable rom. You might like Fusion also as that and Cog are based off the curren kcb1 release from att.
You will need odin 1 click to return to stock. You will have to download Rom Manager and install Clockwork recovery. That puts an update.zip on your phone that boots you into recovery mode so you can flash a rom. Once you put clockwork on the phone its best to copy the udate.zip to your comp or to an ext sd card so you can just move it over after you flash back to stock when you updated roms.
First and foremost is read as much as you can before doing anything.
Thanks for the brief input. It was not my intent to post in the wrong forum. I'll repost in the Q/A.
Pm a mod and have them move it instead of double posting.

The answer is Yes.
like they said above you could have done by flashing but you would still need root and rom manager first which if you already have 2.2 means flashing a kernel via .tar which used to mean odin but now we have neldars app. so it's not really one step, even on 2.1 noone is doing signed .zips that run in 2e recovery so you still need to root and install cwmrecovery.
basically roms have some nice features like getting rid of tw mms which many versions of have bugs and timing errors that can cause double messages or incorrect order of messages or in some cases messages to the wrong contact, if you dont have that issue now flashing a rom with tw mms may cause it or it may not. aosp mms is safer but only works with samsung lockscreens on some roms, watch for that if you like the puzzle piece functionality. but there may be many enhancements like removed bloat(unless you like the samsung bloatware) minfree tweeks, mobile ap which may be more stable than using an app for wifi hotspot, plus random shortcuts ect.ect. many of these things you can do but some are features of the base rom and require flashing, 2.2.1 baseroms are smoth as butter, especially the ones from china and 2.2.1 kernels will make the phone benchmark better.
then there is kernels which you can flash now without the rom, kernels can make the phone feel smoother and the screen brighter and better colors and add volume to the headphone amp which i dont recommend because mine clips at anything above the stock setting. also there is undervolt and overclock ect... i would recomend maybe a speedmod kernel or glitterballs work, some galaxy s phones can not exceed 1.2 ghz i dont know of anyone that cant overclock but for me 1.2 is 100% stable 1.28 is 90% stable 1.3 is about the same maybe a bit more stable and 1.4 is about 30% stable i can do it but need to be really carefull about what's running and for how long, not really usable. kernels other than glitterballs mat cause your phone to die while charging but i here the sucker punch kernel has a lower occurrence of that than past kernels. speed mod is not overclock and is safe and makes a big difference!
then there is modem.bins and gps. the two are related. if you have good gps now flashing a modem.bin can make that go away and vise/versa there isn't any rules as to what works/doesn't because every phone is different. but other than gps you need to match a captivate rom to a captivate modem. this is because on north american captivate roms changing the modem and kernel to a non captivate version will disable bluetooth calling.
then there is hsupa, it's a bit over rated in a good service area, my isp gives me about the upload bandwith at home that i get without hsupa, my home internet is fine for browsing but im not hosting any files. on the otherhand it may help in lower service areas somewhat or if you tether multiple devices. to enable huspa you need a non north american captivate rom and kernel and modem.bin, you need to decide if that is important and at a slight risk of losing some gps performance as it is so inconsistent it is hard to tell what may or may not work for you.
Moved to Q&A as not android development

Seems like now a days there isn't that many people making ROMs like there was back in the Windows Mobile days. Anyways, I'm looking for a AT&T 2.1 ROM w/o the AT&T bloatware. Is there anything out there? I know there are some ROMs that people have cooked up, but I'm looking for something more specific. Such as mentioned above.
If there isn't, is there any way you could assist me in making my own clean ROM, or just point me in the right direction? It seems that there isn't much documentation about how to go about making your own ROM.
Any help would be great.

Correct. Like I posted above, head into the Captivate General sub-forum and see how many were complaining it wasn't actually a "upgrade".
There are tut all over the place about removing the bloat from the stock roms. As for 2.2 being worse, I cant say much as all stock rom's are pretty bad. 2.2 brought some much needed features to the captivate. Don't take peoples thoughts on it, try it yourself and make up your own mind.

Doing a search didn't really land me up with much. But I did find the stock I897UCJF6 files. I thought I could find them in Odin3 but they are hiding in the .exe file. Now time to remove things and test things out. I'd try 2.2 out myself, but if everyone is saying they are crap. No need to test it out myself lol.
Wondering if I'm able to replace the stock kernel with one of the OC'd kernels... Hmm...

I will say this for the 2.2 update as I did run it for the better part of a day before I went back to a 2.2.1 based rom. It was better then the 2.1 that came stock on it. Most people that were complaining about it were expecting the stock rom to run like a custom rom or for it to fix all the issues they had with it. While I admit it is a BS rom, if you are going stock then it is better then the 2.1. But like I said it is up to you.
I am sure there is a kernel for it but you may have to look in older posts as most of the custom kernels for a stock rom are based of the KB1 2.2 update, not sure if any are compatible with 2.1 any longer.

I am sure there is a kernel for it but you may have to look in older posts as most of the custom kernels for a stock rom are based of the KB1 2.2 update, not sure if any are compatible with 2.1 any longer.

Doing a quick look around, it does seem that most of the kernels are for the 2.2 and 2.2.1 ROMs. For example SpeedMod kernel.
So I may need to find the stock 2.2 files and go from there. It doesn't seem as hard as I thought it was going to be, but that's just from doing some quick searching. Do you happen to know the Baseband Version of the latest firmware? If not, then I'll end up finding it and hopefully be able to find it's files online.
mbudden,
The official froyo release is kb1. Cognition is basically stock kb1 with a lagfix injected kernel and much of the "bloat" removed. The 2.2.1 roms such as js5, js7 are noticeably smoother and I often used them without a lagfix enabled.
If you are looking to build a base Rom yourself and don't want to start from scratch, check out doc's kitchen.

Yeah, I found the I897UCKB1 .tar file and was taking a peak inside. But interesting. I was looking to remove some of the other things that was added in the Continuum ROM, but the darn .apk's aren't all obviously named. I'll give a look at the Cognition though. Not really into the whole themes and this and that. I like stream lined ROM's. Nothing fancy.
Thanks for that thread though, maybe I should have taken a gander at the I9000 subforums too. lol. Now to figure out how to zip everything back into a .tar file.
Rather than cook up a whole ROM,
upgrade to 2.2 (it is better, ignore the disapointed whiners)
install a kernal of your choice (if you want)
use titanium backup to uninstall the bloat
now you have a stock rom, with a good kernal and no bloat.
P.S. some folks think that just because their lives rovolve arround android, that android pays attention to what they want. People always cry when upgrades arrive because no one at android paid any attention to them.

The thing is, I just installed Continuum. I just don't like it. I do admit that it is fast. I like the stock icons and I like the stock the stock look and feel. Not to mention, some of the installed stuff I didn't care for. Also I don't need extra lock screens, or colored menus.
But anyways, got the factoryfs.rfs file apart. So basically that's the system folder like it would be in a custom ROM. Now to find out how to Deodex these .apk/.odex files.
Honestly, if you're just looking for the AT&T standard rom without the bloatware, you'd find it a lot easier to just flash back to whatever came with the phone & strip it of bloatware via titanium backup.

What's wrong with learning the hard way? That's the easy way out.
Doing it my way will help me understand Android.
Like I said, I used to build my own custom Windows Mobile ROMs for myself. Why not learn how to build my own custom Android ROMs?
If any ROM makers want to share some advice, do so.
Mikey has a good basic tutorial stickied here in development. There is also a guide on deodexing put up recently. Other than that it is pretty much just de/recompiling the apk and jar files to edit. Mikeymike and chancem (serendipity) have an irc and seem willing to provide advice. Sorry for no links but on the phone atm.
Hope you're enjoying the phone btw.

His tutorial is what I'm following as we speak. A lot of the stuff he mentions isn't clearly defined though. So Google has been helpful with that. For example, he doesn't talk about how to deodex the apk/jar/odex files. But that's alright, nothing a little Googling won't fix. Will be also throwing the fixes that have been made in. A lot of reading lol.
But I am, such a great device. Battery life isn't as great as my Blackberry. But hey, it's not that much of a hassle.
Alright, I got most if it down. But when I go to load it via clockwork recovery. I get this "E:can't symlink /system/bin/cat" Any assistance?
I guess I took the "easy" way out.
I have AT&T 2.2 (WAY better than 2.1)
Root
removed unwanted bloat with TiBackup
installed SuperCurio's KB1 + Voodoo KB1 Kernel
This let me have some of the features of a custom ROM that I wanted without having to backup and restore all my apps/etc.
By no means do I have anything against that. It's just I'd rather learn things myself. So if it came time for me to build my own ROM to my liking. I have the know how.
Hey folks!
So I have been running froyo by laszlo for the longest time but decided to switch back to Donut.
I'm currently running dwang-v1.17.1 and I love how fast it is, the ability to play 3D games and all that other good stuff. I've also used a kernel to OC to 691 without any problems
Anyway, my question is.. Is it possible to somehow manipulate the system into showing that it is running Android 2.x + ??
I want to be able to run a couple more apps, more specifically WhatsApp Messenger..but it is incompatible with 1.6
If anyone has a possible solution, please let me know. Even if it's an idea..I'm kind of desperate here.
Thank you in advance for your replies. Much appreciated
You can fake it by editing the build.prop, but it will not help you. Newer apps are using different Android-APIs and apps programmed against those APIs will not be able to run on older Android versions.
Sent from my Gingerbread on Dream using XDA App
Hey AndDiSa, thanks for your reply.
Is there a way around that? What I mean is, is there a way to 'fake' the details of the Android-API's?
Or is that like trying to squeeze orange juice out of a banana..lol
You need to install a custom rom which supports the new APIs, i.e. Eclair / Froyo or Gingerbread, there are no other chances.
OK, cool. Thanks for your help. It's much appreciated =)
