Firmware for the Galaxy tab Froyo rom - Vibrant Android Development

2.2, and most of the hardware is the same as the galaxy s phones.

I hope this can help the developers get 2.2 to our vibrant

It is for developers to pick through.

If the Dev's are aware of this and already have there hands on it feel free to close this thread.

I don't think it's old news. I'm pretty sure they found the firmware today.

yall might be thinking about the eu rom that came out but this should be different since its for the tablet...

I don't recall Sammy ever releasing anything to do with Froyo before this.. not sure how it's old news but also not sure how it can help the SGS owners since its for their tablet/pad

hey good find... don't bother with the negativity!!! lets keep it positive!!! good job maybe someone can use it.. you never know...

Maybe Someone could do it, but i see problems due to Resolution differences between the Samsung Tab and the Vibrant.

SGS is 480x800
Tablet is 600x1024
Some in the Captivate forums were noticing all the files associated with the tablet had that set as the resolution.
Think I might do some work to see what I can do for it... I'm on a Captivate, so I'm not sure how it'd help out the Vibrant, but I'll see what I can do.

Indeed they do. I was right buddy:
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010...tab-european-firmware-reveals-device-details/

what they are posting on different tech sites is probably incorrect like he said the firmware is associated with a higher resolution

Why don't some brave soul just flash the firmware already? Lol. I'd do it but I'm already at my return limit for returns at Tmobile.

why would anybody here flash the galaxy tab or tape or whatever they call it for there phone. it's a tablet not a phone. the processor's different or not, and the resolution is different or not. 2 many maybes to flash on the vibrant

I flashed it onto my captivate, and it doesn't get past the boot screen, which looks like a broken tv(black and grey lines moving across the screen with a somewhat legible gt-p1000 logo). Flashed back to stock with no problems though.

All reports so far show that its basically the phone.. same processor, innards, screen, ect, exept for the resolution. What would be super deee duper if someone could figure out a way to be able to flip resolutions back n forth on the fly like we do on our computers... why? i dunno... just to piss off another iphone user i guess.. lol.

Anybody willing to experiment?

Since we have a Froyo kernel for the Captivate, anybody want to try to load a galaxy Tab ROM with our Captivate kernel? I would if I had a PC and ODIN wasn't a pain in the ass for me to use.
Thats not going to work, of the bat, most of the system is for a much high res, but anyone is welcome to try...
for some reason I thought the tab and our phones were the same resolution. thanks for the info.

They may be the same overall resolution, but trying using the tab email app and everything is very tiny. I would not want the entire device like that.
Tab is 1024x600. Even if the Tab rom booted, most of the apps wouldn't display right.
What about changing the pixel density?
From a phone on an app
I know i tried and im sure zilch did too. So far no go. Even with working on the res.

Port the Extra Available RAM and Full 1080p HD playback from Galaxy Tab?

Reading around, I have found that the Galaxy Tab has the same amount of ram as the Galaxy S, however, when you read the available ram it says it has 444 mb (somewhere around there) compared to the 304 mb of the galaxy S (343 mb of you use the speedmod)
So my first question is if we can look at the Galaxy Tab, and just port over the code to allow more available ram to the Galaxy S?
My second question is that the Galaxy Tab supports Full 1080p HD playback. Since both the S and the Tab have the same GPU chip, I was wondering if we can also port that to the Galaxy S.
Now i know i know, 1080p playback on a phone is useless, but its not useless for ppl who have DLNA-capable TV's and for who-knows-when Samsung will get that microUSB to HDMI cable working.
UPDATE (11/7/10): Another thought came to mind last night. Reading through the Speedmod thread, there were certain amounts of ram before 720p recording and playback stopped working. Well, can we create some kind of script where we only had the allocated the ram of one of them? IDK how to really put this into words, but I don't think anyone will ever record 720p and watch a 720p video at the same time, so can we have it so that the ram is only open for one or the other, and it switches depending on whether you are recording 720p or watching it? Instead of having both of them take up ram, like have only one of them, at a time, taking up ram. Not sure of that really made sense :/
And port the large screen too.
Ya I agree I'd love a bigger screen.
10 billion dollars to have someone who can turn my screen into 5 inches.
Another 5 billion if they can do it without taking up extra space.
I'm sorry about that I just couldn't help myself

Whats even funnier is how your sarcasm doesn't even make sense because what I am suggesting is actually possible because the hardware is identical in both aspects, and since both devices run android, it should not be a hard port. Thats why I'm asking if an experienced developer or anyone with skill in programming to take a look in it.
If you aren't going to contribute an educated answer or a helpful one, please don't comment. I'm just someone asking a question, and sarcastic answers like this aren't necessary.
Ya sorry abou thatt. I see you question vut this has all already been discussed that the rest of the ram is used for system apps and stuff so you probably wouldnt want to change that.

He says system apps because of the video playback. If you go to the i9000 developtment section youll see a kernel thread called speed mod. (This is what setirons kernel is based off of) in there youll see the that certain amount of memory is needed to playback videos in 720p.
Thats what i think hes talking about system apps.
Now if you want 1080p playback AND more ram youll see why its not currently possible

Not to mention from what I understand the hardware might br similar but is not close to identical. If the galaxy s phones were identical then roms would be interchangeable etc. But it isn't. I think ports of features would be nice, but I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you. The ram issue has been worked on and from what I understand 340 I'd all they have been able to unlock.
I think the most important thing captivate devs could do right now is aosp because that will open a whole world of possibilities bit even that is amazingly difficult because of the way samsung built their system and all of the wonderful hooks and links.

The hardware is the same, other than the screen and camera. They both have a Hummingbird 1 ghz CPU and a SGX540 GPU chip, same amount of ram.
Btw, has anyone tried flashing a Galaxy tab rom on a Galaxy S? Since most of the hardware is the same, i would predict that the camera wouldnt work, and the screen MIGHT work, but the icons would be way larger than normal, but for everything else, it should work cuz the hardware is identical.

And if the devs have to take the time to answer questions like this, then it will further delay the release.

I seem to be spending most of my xda time on the sgs2 section....I'm happy with my tab, so just pop in now and again to see what is new. Basically to see if cm7 is matured, and also to see what wizardry the overcome team have produced.
But the sgs2 has tons more development(more is not necessarily better though, seeing as people just seem to be releasing 'themed' roms, nothing original apart from villainrom), but its a lot to keep up with

Overcome 2.01 crashes after upgrade from Overcome 1.6
Hi, I am new to the forum so please bear with me.
I had previously installed Overcome 1.6 on a Telstra Galaxy tab; I ran it for around 2 month with no hiccups. I recently updated to Overcome 2.01 to have video on skype; however ever since the upgrade the Tab is really unstable. It crashes every time I try to look for directions from google maps while on the road.
The crash is so severe that it won’t go past the overcome boot logo after restart. I reinstalled a couple of times with the same result. I also tried following the guide to step 6 and see if it also happened on the “factory fresh gingerbread” form; and this time it crashed as soon as I used the browser over wi-fi. The crash is as severe, the tablet shows a lot of pop up errors after boot and then it boots itself again.
Can I revert back to Overcome 1.6 while the new version (Android 2.3.4) is released; or I can’t go back from gingerbread to froyo?
Thank you for advising.
Cheers,

Hi There,
I indeed followed the instructions to the line the 3 times and the result is always the same.
I did notice that on the last step when loading the rom itself, the screen flickers a few times and during the "loading kernel" line a few blue lines appear; the process still finishes normally.
Should I use the Telstra modem file instead of the one on the JK3 folder?
Cheers,
hi carludo
crash while jusing wifi maybe the wrong modem. you are from australia?
is it a euro or asian tab? so look for the right modem. many times flash
the same maybe wrong.

Hi There,
Correct, it is a Telstra Galaxy tab, I used the modem file in the JK3 folder as per the instructions; I will give it another try and use hte modem file from that Testra restock thread and see if it makes a difference.
I will let you know later tonight how it goes.

GPS fix from fascinate 3G+ for Gingerbread

notice the title of the thread says "Fascinate 3G+" and not "Fascinate". the Fascinate 3G+ is a device sold in Canada by Telus (model number T959D, I believe). It's GSM and is basically a rebranded Vibrant.
The GPS fix WILL NOT WORK. The hardware radio is the same as an i9000.
The vibrant is very diffrent from the other galaxy s variants because its the only model that supports 1700mhz 3g. To have this band, it requires a different hardware radio.
The fascinate 3g+ may look identical to the vibrant but the insides are very similar to an I9000 other than the front capacitive buttons.

No need to do it because i said so after all you need to flash a compatible rom before the bootloader so you have the correct partitions on the phone .
If you flash only the rom and not the bootloaders on a vibrant when you plugin any usb lead it will bootloop.
And why? We have cyanogen support, i dont see the benefits.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but these GPS files are working like garbage on my T-Mobile Vibrant. I let it go for 15 minutes, and still no lock. I replaced pretty much ever file that had anything to do with GPS in it's filename. It was a failure.
Also, FM Radio app refuses to install.
Honestly, all the nay-sayers need to settle down a tick. Any, and ALL attempts to fix the Ginger GPS issues with the Vibrant are welcome. Hell I've even gone as far as to put a piece of copper tape across the inside of my back plate (slightly better cell reception, no impact on GPS). So keep 'em coming! I'm grateful someone at least is working on it, even if it might be futilely, since waiting for Samsung/T-Mo to do it has created nothing but a bunch of bitter pessimists. And last time I checked, bitter pessimists don't improve GPS reception, no matter how hard you flash them!

Hopefully the CM7 developers take a look at those files, (mainly atinm, and Kaik541). GPS is something I personally do not care about but will make others settle down.

ICS for HeroC

What do you guys think, does our lowly HeroC have what it takes? Also, even if it does, do we have the devs left to get it going? Sorry...I'm all geeked up for the announcement tonight. Plus, I'm not due for an upgrade until March...eek!

What do you think?
And, also.. please move this to the Q/A or General section.
Sorry. Will do once I'm on my pc. Not sure I can move it from xda app.
Also, I'm hoping for some official cm8 love or something along those lines.
Eventually!? At least I hope we do.

That would be awesome if it did but i believe that you can do it seeing that you got other things working like HC and Sense 3.5.
I know this is in the wrong section. Anyone tell me how to move it to general? Just thought I would see who else was psyched for ICS like me.

We probably have to wait till a low end device comes out running it, or it gets ported to a similar device, like we had to wait for the Pico. Only time will tell. . .

Man i know you can get it to work You done some pretty amazing stuff on here and if you cant maybe you can get Jaybob to help you or something
with the navigation buttons at the bottom, it might be a little cramped. sure we can change the dpi to like 120 but my phone lags when i try to make everything smaller and fit more on the screen.
Or if the navigation buttons can be removed... who knows. Of course even cramped ICS would be great on our Heroes.
Im almost positive we will get some sort of port of ICS. Ever since froyo the companies have been saying that the hero simply can not handel the new updates because of minimal system requirements. However I red an article with a Q&A about ICS, and one of the questions was what are the minimal system requirements for ICS? The anser was none that i can think of right now. ICS is meant to bring Android tablets and phones toghether in developmental terms. Google is trying to unify android, rather than have phones rounning one type of android and tablets another. It has even been said that ICS will be available for older devices of up to one year old or so. But in closeing im prety optimistic about a port for the Hero, and probably sooner than latter.
Considering that our devs got the source now I'm sure were gona see ICS can't wait

I downloaded the beta version of ICS for hero to see how it looks and feels it"s a little buggy it has some things that need to be worked out like not being able to pair with bluetooth device and bluetooth turning off completely and not being able to turn it back on again... Also when trying to turn on wifi hotspot the phone just hangs there saying turning on wifi screen I let it run for 5 minutes before I rebooted my phone... This rom is in early stages of devoplement and if and when the stuff that isn't working gets fixed I see this as my next rom of choice... Nice work jaybob on a job will done and a million thanks to you...
