Flashing G1 back to factory - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if I can flash my G1 back to stock form. I have the lastest Cyanogen Stable Mod, which in turn means I have the Danger SPL. Is there a way I can flash it back to stock? I have googled this a couple times and haven't found an answer.
Could someone clarify this for me? And direct me how to do this?
Thanks so much in advance.

Thread moved in G1 Q&A.
There is also an official thread of Cyanogen ROM's where you can ask, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722801

Get yourself a copy of the 1.33.2003 SPL -- it has the same partition layout as stock while being a true engineering bootloader. Boot it into fastboot mode, fastboot flash hboot hboot.img
Then go to developer.htc.com/adp.html, get the img file archive from there and fastboot it to the phone.
This gives you stock with the ability to go back to custom without having to HACK it again.

I am actually sending it in for return, they will charge me $100, if the warranty is void, and since I flashed it, it is. I want to revert it back to fully stock. To see if they catch it. Would it get rid of the custom splash image? And I am guessing I would just google for the original Google Rom?

Thanks for the help guys I got it to work.

[Q] Nexus One dead, no screen Response

Hi everybody, I unlocked a N1 using fastboot and clockwork recovery. At the time to install the CM6 I encountered and error related to the version of de HBOOT.
I found a guide by Amritttt for reverting HBOOT to 0.33.0012, when I flashed PASSIMG following reboot the screen has become dead.
I tried to re-flash the phone with Amon_Ra recovery (1.8.1 and 2.0) but I can't enter in any mode. The only way I found is entering in the Bootloader and pushing files using fastboot... so I tried to restore the original system using the following:
PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_1.01.1700.1_ERD79_release_signed
Passion-VF-FRF91
with this method: uncompress, flash userdata, system and recovery.
But it did't work, in the last flash the phone hasn't the SIM inside and I realized that the trackball blincked in red two or three minutes after rebooting. So I am wondering if I have a SLCD N1 what can I do to solve this disaster??
thanks!
Look at my signature, go there, see "Unroot/restore your Nexus", reflash EVERYTHING - either with fastboot (and you need to reflash HBOOT too), or do the PASSIMG method - with FRG33, and then upgrade to FRG83.
actually ignore me, that wont work for s-on, yeah, u gunna have to go through the pass-img method, completely reverting back to stock and start from scratch
Thanks, I'll try. I can't use PASSIMG method because my screen ism't working, or there's other way to do?
When you say all, you refer to use "fastboot flash all FRG33" Doing that I reflash alse the HBOOT or I need to do something more?
Thanks

Can you not get your working hboot.img
boot to fastboot by Powering off
Power on by holding power & Trackball (will take you directly to fastboot)
then do "fastboot flash hboot hboot.img"

Yeah, but my screen is not working, and ADB is not reconizing the phone. I only can send files using fastboot and the screen is not working
There is a method for doing the pass-img method using fastboot?
or maybe the only problem is the HBOOT?
OK, here we go
Download Latest Amon-Ra
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611829
copy it to your android-sdk/tools/ folder and rename recovery.img
boot to fastboot, (Power & Trackball)
open up a shell (cmd prompt) and
cd (path to sdk/tools)
fastboot devices (make sure your device is there)
fastboot boot recovery.img
your phone should boot into recovery image
use your method for flashing through adb now if you can
if you can't then try flashing the korean wwe update
hit enable usb-ms
download this, its a korean FRF91 build. it is known to have the updated 0.35.0017 Hoot in it which i believe has support for slcd displays, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722281
copy to your SD
hit trackball to disable usb-ms, go to wipe, wipe all data
then goto flash image from zip,
choose the korean frf91 that you just downloaded hopefully when you reboot you will have updated your hboot again
i tried the baove method but i cannot get the recovery .......i have the same problem my display is dead !! i have gone into recovery but i cant see it and hence cant do a wipe and flash the zip can nyone please help me!!!!
Jack gave you the response you need.
Follow the unroot/restore guide from the wiki, using the PASSIMG method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...des_&_Tutorials#Unroot_.2F_Restore_your_Nexus
The long to the files is on the word "here" on step 2. Use FRG33.
This is done from the bootloader - you don't need to use recovery...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
actualy i cant see anything cant see fastboot menu nor the bootloader! so i will not be able to do from step 2...please can nyone tell me wad to do?? is my fone bricked?? do i have to giv it to htc??

[Q] Is Fastboot the answer to my woes?

I want to flash a new radio and kernel to my G1 that is running CM6. My signal is atrocious and I get a few random oddities each day.
I have tried the recovery flash for the radio at least 6 times now in various ways following various guides and every time I do it it crashes my phone and I end up flashing the image, rooting, etc, to get back to CM6. it takes me over an hour to get back to normal and it just plain sucks!
So my question is..... Can I use fastboot flash to flash the image files for the radio and the kernel without being on the special Hboot 1.33.0013d and such?
I was planning to use the instructions from the ezterry kernel page and just want to check that I wont bork up my phone. I seem to recall that the fastboot flash bypasses all the need for FR-remove and such but want a second opinion before I take the dive this way.
Not trying to drive you away from CM 6, but have you tested other ROM to see if it has the same problem or similar.
I personally myself could not get CM6 to work properly on my G1 back when I was trying to use it.
I couldn't get the radio to recovery flash even on the stock ROM after rooting.
I guess I could try a different ROM.
I just now have proven to myself that i cant flash the EzTerry kernel from Rom Manager and clockwork recovery as I am in the midst of yet another image flash, re-root, and such after it wouldn't go past the reboot screen afterwards
This phone is just an extra toy but I am determined to figure it out.
I suppose I will just try the radio.img flash from fastboot tonight when I get home.
As long as I dont brick it I can always start over from scratch.
so I copied the image I want to flash onto the root of my sd card
did the camera+power boot
pressed the back key and I am at the screen with the red fastboot usb box
I plug into the computer (adb already installed and working fine) and go to the command prompt and type
fastboot flash hboot hboot-1.33.0013d.img
the screen says error: cannot load 'hboot-1.33.0013d.img'
Did I put the image file in the wrong place?
Edit: I put it in the root of the computers c: drive and typed
fastboot flash hboot c:\hboot-1.33.0013d.img
seems to have worked.

I got the recoveryand the hboot to flash but damned if I can get any radio to flash.
I get
writing 'radio'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
this is with both version of the radio downloaded from the links in the EzTerry thread
What in the world am I doing wrong that I cannot flash a new radio?
installed the spoofSPL... didnt help
edit: Started over again from scratch, rooted, flashed RA recovery, dangerSPL, then fastbooted and managed to install the hboot and the new radio. I guess CM6 hates the newer radios.
edit: Pretty sure CM6 does hate the radio because now its hung up on the install screen.
off to do more research.
People ... you should read before flashing around.
Ok, let me try to help.
1) As long as you have a fastboot enabled SPL, there is no need to 're-root'. Boot into hboot and flash the things you want.
2) Going to 1.33.0013d you *lose* most of your fastboot capabilities, e.g. flashing a new SPL/radio/recovery is no longer working. The only chance is to flash a signed nbh-file (e.g. fully signed rom)
I suggest you to read Terry' thread carefully (a link is in my signature) and then to retry ...
Btw: If you have installed the "new" radio/spl combo you need an adopted kernel, too, otherwise you will get bootloops.

I managed to get everything work and am running CM6.1+2708 and 0013d with the .27 radio.
Why do we go to the 0013d if it screws up the fastboot? I notice in your signature you are running it also?
And say I want to flash a different rom now? I can only do it from RA recovery, Correct?
But as it stands now I ought to be able to experiment around with the other radio and other roms using recovery without any more issues? Or do they need to have certain parameters?
Once rooted, (to my knowledge) you do not required to re-root it again.
You can use RA Recovery to flash other ROMs with out having to re-root. (as to what I was told) And I recommend RA Recovery instead of ROM Manager/ClockMod Recovery (bad experience with it personnaly).
So as long as the ROM that you want to try is compatible with your current SPL/radio. You should be fine.

Boot loop prior to rooting or s-off, on stock, can't get to main screens

Hi all,
Got a sensation XL here which isn't rooted, nor has it been altered in anyway, not sure what happened to it to be honest and it's not actually mine either.
It's still s-on, I can get to the bootloader no problem, but factory reset just doesn't do anything, it just puts it back in the boot loop.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
PS: I'm thinking it's bricked.
Lock the bootloader (if that's been unlocked) and then try flashing the RUU to put it back to factory.
You're in england, so unless it's branded, the RUU you need is in the RUU thread in the dev forum, and it's 1.05.401.x that you want.

It's not been unlocked, it's just a stock handset, not branded, so with the official ruu, how do i flash it?
Thanks for replying m8.
make sure htc sync is installed on a PC (just for the drivers, you don't want to actually use it)
Plug the phone in via the USB (Direct, not through a hub)
Run RUU file on PC.
that should be it.
Thanks pal, fingers crossed eh.
Will let you know if it worked.
It didn't work
Tried both of the Europe RUU's but it still hasn't worked, says signature error?
Both of the files took an hour to download each.
Seriously hating this now
Any other ideas??
Thanks.
if that hasn't worked, next thing i'd try is to flash a custom ROM.
Can it get into fastboot?
If so, i'd unlock the bootloader, install the recovery and see if you can flash one of the custom ROMs.

Actually no i didn't i just used the HTC method.
What can i flash to get this thing working man, it's killing me, even factory reset doesn't work? That's just not normal, i'm s-on, i don't think theres an s-off method for the XL yet? Maybe there is.
But i'm really restricted as to what i can do, i've got fastboot and it works fine but besides that i'm lost.
factory reset uses the recovery partition. if that's chuffed, so's your hard reset.
I have attached the stock recovery from 1.05
go into fastboot.
when there, enter
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
That should re-flash the recovery as long as your bootloader is unlocked. that might bring it back to life.
if it fails, flash the CWM recovery and then use a custom ROM
download the paul o'brien recovery and then use the same command as above, but using the name of the modaco recovery file
Code:
fastboot flash recovery r1-recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-modaco-runnymede.img
that should then allow you to flash a custom ROM
Ok so it's not bootlooping now on factory reset, it's just stopped on the white HTC screen after hitting factory reset.
I'll leave it there for a bit and see how it goes, i don't think it's going to progress though.
The device is defo unlocked.
Going into recovery brings it back to the bootloop.
It's different on factory reset just not recovery and neither are progressing, i'll give the other recovery a whirl.
Lol failed battery low

Nah m8, none of them worked or changed anything, the only difference being that factory reset on the stock recovery just stayed on the white htc screen, no change besides that.
Any other ideas? and thanks for taking the time to help me too.
I appreciate it.
I'm really not sure what else to suggest. if recovery just isn't loading after being flashed, then it suggests some sort of brick i think...
Even if there's no ROM installed, once a recovery is flashed, you should be able to at least access the recovery and from there install some sort of rom.
I'm beginning to suspect that it is indeed bricked, as you did in the first post.

well i've been looking for some official ruu's to flash, one up from the one i'm on would do it i reckon, or at least give me a starting block.
I tried the test rom from a thread and now i can't find it
Will look again, find it and flash it, the test one didn't work, so i'm going to try a slightly older one.
fingers crossed, again.

[Q] Assistance required with altered N1

I recently came across a modified Google Nexus One (N1) that has been experimented on. Upon boot up, I get a black screen with the HTC logo and four exclamation marks inside triangles in each of the four corners of the screen. As I attempted to enter hboot, I saw it has been replaced with Blackrose which leads me to believe it has been unlocked/rooted at some point in time. ( I am fairly new at this, but I lurk around the forum ). I tried hooking the N1 up to RUU to flash it back to a stock ROM, however that proved unsuccessful - the phone boots up to the above mentioned logo and stays that way. When I try to go to recovery/hboot, instead of the usual menu choices, there's only RUU as an option... Is the phone bricked, and if not, how can I revert it to a working state ?
I have attached pictures of what the boot screen looks like, as well as the recovery menu.
Thank you in advance.
It's in the middle of RUU mode, entered by executing "fastboot oem rebootRUU" (I might not remember it 100% correct, so check it with Google).
This should be enough for you to check with Google how you exit RUU mode.
The only way I see to exit this mode is if I flash it with something via fastboot ( since no recovery works, custom or stock ). What image file or zip do I flash it with, in order to revert it back to complete stock ( stock hboot, stock recovery, stock ROM ) - I want the phone like it was out of the box, so I can reroot it and unlock it myself.
I tried flashing it with PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_3.13.1700.1_GRK39F_release_signed.zip through fastboot, for a moment it seemed to be going ok, then at the very end, while it was unpacking the [user data] image I get a partition update fail message 51, and after reboot - still the gray HTC letters and Blackrose instead of HBOOT.
Any suggestions ?
Short googling with the error would have revealed you the bad news.
Partition update fail means bad stuff - your NAND is malfunctioning, which equals a dead phone.

doesn't the phone need to be working in order for me to hook it up to Blackrose ? As of now, with this screen, the PC doesn't seem to detect it as a working phone, only fastboot. And Blackrose just says waiting for device... how do I uninstall it then?
I also tried this RUU: RUU_Passion_Vodafone_Generic_3.11.151.3_GRJ22_release, flashing the ROM to an image version 3.11.151.3, but at the end I get a message saying ERROR [110]: FILE OPEN ERROR. The RUU cannot open the requested files or the files are damaged. The RUU cannot continue with the update. Please get a complete RUU package and try again. Can someone please refer me to a working RUU package for the Nexus One, I am really scared of experimenting trying to find one by myself, seeing how the phone is already hanging in the balance, I would be thankful
You could try to flash this stock HBOOT, and if you have resized partitions I guess you could always use blackrose_manual_120421.zip to change to stock partition layout (145/95/196).
Edit: I've never flashed a HBOOT this way, and I never resized my partitions the manual way, so I would check the Blackrose for details. And I'm not responsible if you brick your phone
Edit2: I see you haven't got working recovery, so you should find a way to flash the HBOOT via fastboot. Maybe the Blackrose developer dla5244 can help you out (or Google).
Edit3: You could also try to flash this engineering HBOOT

Thanks for your time friend, I tried the above mentioned steps, it says OK all across the board in fastboot while I flash, but after I reboot it just goes back to the same screen, stuck in RUU. I did some digging around and found this which seems to be exactly my problem:
RUU PROBLEMS
"I tried using a RUU, but it failed, and now my phone is stuck on a black HTC Screen with /!\ In every corner!"
Possible Causes:
- You were S-OFF and you flashed a custom bootloader from alpharev
- You didn't check the MD5 Sums before proceeding, and the download may have been corrupted.
- You tried using the wrong RUU
Fixing your problem
Your phone is stuck in RUU mode. RUU mode is like fastboot mode, and can still receive fastboot commands, therefore it can be easily "fixed".
It helps to have a goldcard for this problem, so that you can use any RUU you want.
S-OFF
[STEP1]- download "Bravo Stock" from Alpharev
[STEP2]- download Android Flasher
[STEP3]- use android flasher to flash "Bravo Stock"
[STEP4]- run the RUU again and wait for it to finish
S-ON
If you're S-ON it eliminates the possibility of you having a custom bootloader, and the only possibility now is that the RUU was corrupted or you
used the wrong RUU for your device. Therefore, for this process you need a goldcard.
[STEP1]- Create the goldcard from the tutorial
[STEP1]- Use the WWE RUU
However, this is from a thread for the HTC Bravo. Anything similar for the N1 ?
Edit1: Could it be that the hboot partition was resized with Blackrose and therefore the RUU I tried to flash it with needs stock partition layout ?
Your partitions ARE resized. 2nd picture 2nd line JB-220/10/206. If it's b*tching about the resized partitions, then that would be about your cache partition (which is 85MB smaller than its stock size).
Edit: you should also try to wipe your partitions with fastboot, then flash the img's that are inside the passimg
what's the command line to wipe the partition ? fastboot format hboot/recovery/system ?
Dude, your Nexus One is dead, the internal NAND is damaged and therefore unrecoverable.

update, keep root and not wipe?

I've been flashing phones since way back with the tmobile G1, but I just don't have the time to be constantly fiddling around with my phone. To that end, I want to update from 5.0 to stock but rooted 5.0.1 (or 2) but I don't want to have to do a full wipe. It takes forever to get everything back just the way I like it. Is it possible? I'm getting the stupid OTA update notification and its driving me crazy.
By the way I did search before I posted a new thread. Found lots that say you can't take the OTA but nothing specifically pointing me to a stock ROM that won't require a wipe.
Thanks for taking the time to help.

Options are:
1) Download full factory image and remove the -w flag from the flash-all script (Will replace your recovery)
2) individually fastboot flash the system, boot and radio image using fastboot from above factory image
3) find a recovery flashable rom.zip if you have a custom recovery
If you want root, flash it from recovery before booting.

Here are the steps I took to flash the factory image and not lose my settings:
Flash bootloader and radio:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-shamu-moto-apq8084-71.05.img
fastboot flash radio radio-shamu-d4.0-9625-02.55.04.img
After flashing the bootloader/radio, you need to reboot the bootloader as shown below, don't skip this step!
fastboot reboot-bootloader
I then unzipped this file: image-shamu-lrx22c.zip
Now you can move on to the rest of the files
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
Finally, just reboot your device, and Android should start up.
fastboot reboot
After the phone restarted I then used CF-Auto-Root to re-root my phone. I did not lose any of my settings or installed apps. HTH...
