[Q] Major Screen Battery Drain Help - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright so I've been running the cyan nightlies, I just updated to the latest one, installed the battery fix. Everythings working fine, put my phone down for and hour and the batt is at like %75, I go under battery use and it puts the screen at 79%, is this normal? I had my screen off most of the time and when it was on it wasnt bright and if this isn't normal how can I fix it?

Have you rebooted to see if it does this after every reboot? Try rebooting normally then see if its still doing it.
If so, then reboot into recovery, wipe dalvik, then reboot normally. Check your battery stats again after a couple hours and see if it's still doing it after the dalvik wipe.
(FYI, this belongs in Q&A section)

can you link to the battery fix plz?

I have had very high display usage on every version of CM6, and you will find it is a VERY common complaint on CDMA Hero's running CM6.
Everyone says it's because Froyo is more efficient, and uses less battery overall, so your display percentage is higher.
I call B.S. on that. I have had poor battery life with the more than 20 nightly versions I have run. I have had the Hero since the day before it came out, and I have never had worse battery life. I even bought a new battery thinking my battery was dying on me, and I still won't make it through a day (7 am - 11 pm) without plugging the phone in during the day.
My guess is there is something up with the display/lights/light sensor drivers that have been implemented in CM6 that don't allow something with the display to sleep properly. Either that, or the battery usage screen is simply completely inaccurate.
I could literally reboot my phone, leave it untouched with the screen off for four hours, then turn on the screen for one minute, and the display usage would shoot up to 50-75%. There is no way one minute of screen usage is using more battery than 4 hours of phone standby using the radio, checking email/twitter/facebook/gmail.
Anyway, that's just my opinion on the matter. Other than the battery life, the newest nightlies of CM6 are simply incredible, so I just deal with the poor battery life.

@ziggy682 -- Thanks for that info. I haven't yet tried CM6 (mainly cuz I'm so dependent on some Sense apps and widgets), and now that I'm reading about some battery issues I may hold off on trying it even longer.
@omair2005 -- if you haven't found it yet, here's the new thread on collin_ph's battery tweak specifically for CM/darch ROMs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=762283

Battery Drain on G1

Guys,I own a T Mobile G1 Android 1.6 Phone and recently I’m facing some problems. The problem that appeared recently is with the battery drain. before some days ago the battery of my G1 lasted up to 4-5 days, without using Wireless, GPS, and Bluetooth. If I used the mentioned services normally the battery lasted up to two days. But recently the battery is draining too fast. Within 4 hours the battery goes down less then 15% even I do not use any mentioned services. I keep my phone on standby, without talking a single minute with the phone, not using any service etc, and again it goes down very quick. I took some measures according to HTC instructions how to save the battery but again it does not function. I uninstalled all applications and reset the phone to factory setting by again same thing. Then I searched on the Google some instructions, I tried also that one’s but again it does not function. I always used HTC charger that came with the phone but again same problem. What is the strangest thing that after some days the battery gets back and works perfectly for two weeks, which means I use the phone normally without charging 4-5 days. As I operate very well with the smartphones, Pocket PC’s etc I start analyzing G1 and monitoring very closely why the battery goes down, I monitored for a long time the query under the :About Phone-Battery use- and I see there that Andorid OS is using the battery from 76% up to 85%. Now it came to my mind that something is keeping engaged or it keeps running the Andorid OS always on. Then I suspected that thre my be any virus on my phone, but I installed form Market Flexilis/lookout antivirus application, but there was no virus and again the battery goes very quickly down. As I said after sometime the system returns to normal and the battery lasts for 4-5 days, and when I check the information under Phone,Battery use, I see that the Andorid OS is spending only 6% of the battery. Comparing with the previous description it is a huge difference. According to my opinion there is a small problem with any file which keeps always running to much the Andorid OS. Can you please give me any instruction why Andorid OS is spending that much the battery? Or give me any instruction how to prevent this operation that keeps Android OS to much engaged? or is there any programming mistake?, is there any need for update?, do I need to root my phone as it is not rooted? The reason why I’m thinking that there is a technical problem is because sometimes the system gets back to normal and sometimes it goes out of normal running. I appreciate a lot if you could help me to resolve the mentioned problem.
I've noticed the same thing on my G1 sometimes there is fast battery drain and it seems associated with Android OS. The percentage is over 70%. I also notice it be associated with the display as well. Could be that there is some process that won't stop running and is using Android OS or it could be that on other occasions the display is not going into sleep mode properly. I wish I knew how to fix these problems but I don't. I just observe them.
The battery issue, is an up and down problem for me. Sometime I can go through it in one day or less, other days it will last me for 2 plus days.
It also could be that the battery need replacing. Who's know.
I just bought a 2nd hand G1 - works just fine. I rooted and installed CM6.1.
My battery drains within 1-2 hours. I've tried various methods of resetting stats, with no luck. How frustrating! I wonder if it's a battery hardware problem or software?
battery
I also faced bad battery life on various roms. Since I'm using COS-DS (android 2.3.3) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950765 and the Biffmod kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950765 the phone runs more than 24h when texting and calling. Of course you should apply the 14MB RAM hack in comination with this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139. On standby (everything off, except data and 3g) my G1 runs >48h, before it needs to be plugged in.

Sounds like the basic description of the USB Charging Bug.
The bug triggers if the G1 is using a kernel starting 2.6.35 and onward tree, and charged using the USB instead of AC wall charger.
A couple of option to avoid the super discharge after that (you can use either);
1. Reboot after you unplug the USB charger.
2. Change kernel to one from 2.6.34 tree
You can also visit the Dev sub-forum, there's a thread there discussing the debugging process.
It is so unpredictable for me...I have just got into the habit of a reboot after unplugging USB.
Battery drain on the G1
I have the same problem. Even on standby it drops to less than half of its battery life. Sometimes its worse. today i noticed that the battery percentage was at 84. Next thing I know the phone reboots itself and it displays that it has 1% battery, battery icon empty all in red and LED flashing in red. Then I turn it off connect it to the charger, after a couple of seconds I turn it back on and says its 90 something percent. Could be a virus or just a battery bug, that's my guess. I scanned the phone with Lookout Security and there was no Virus, malware or spyware found.
I want to try different kernels for this battery issue but want to make sure I am installing the right one.
I have CM6.1 with 2.22.23.02 radio and DangerSPL installed. Can I just load any of the kernels built for EBI0?
Specifically, can I flash the kernel in the 1st post here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010932
Thanks.

Battery issue on Fresh 2.1d.. HELP PLEASE!!

So I flashed the new Fresh ROM and it is taking FOREVER to charge. I finally got it up to 100% and less than 7 hours, it was completely dead.
Any ideas?
Me too! Killed my battery in 7 hours while charging overnight!
Have you looked at what's using the battery?
I know in some of the other 2.1 roms, facebook is constantly syncing which kills the battery.
You can use logcat in sdk to see what the phone is doing while it's idle.
Also, service can also change the drain on your battery. I know at work (inside a 3 story brick building) I get horrible service and my phone is dead by noon if it's not plugged in. At home, it can go all day and then some.
Same issues here. Takes forever to charge and dies quickly. I haven't flashed the new radio yet....could this be this issue?
I've been using it since he released it and battery life is more than excellent. I can go a whole day then some
Go under settings, about phone, battery. What is your uptime and awake time?
Then tap on battery use. What has the highest percentage of use time on your battery?
Also check out 'cell standby'. Tap it.. Time Without Signal should be very low, or missing.
up time 8:57
awake time : 2:42
highest use is close between cell stanby48% and phone idle 47%
time without signal : 0%
BTW my battery was at 38% with little use(a few text msgs and fb mobile a couple of times)
TWS is fine then. Do you have the sync icon constantly running?
And what is your PRL/PRI (sorry if you posted that already).
PRI - flipz_01
PRL - 60663
What about the sync icon?
sorry....no sync icon
Weird. Any mods/themes/etc?
What I would do at this point is wipe everything (including ext), and reflash, then see if you still have the problems. I haven't had those issues, so I can't give you anything else to look at.
Perhaps someone else can, but that's all I can think of.
You could try the new radio. Some have said they get much better battery life with it (which is likely caused by the radio not having to search for signal as often...but since your TWS is 0% I'd be surprised if that's it). Try that, then nuke and pave would be my suggestion.
Last night was the first night that I had my alarm set. Could this have anything to do with the drain?
I had a weird issue with the battery. I don't know what exactly caused it and I could not pinpoint it with "Battery Use" nor "Spare Parts." My phone was staying constantly awake though, no matter what.
I eventually just partitioned the SD card, with no ext partitions (no apps2sd), flashed fresh again, and now it's all working great. I am installing my apps very slowly and monitoring them to see which one may have been causing the problem. So far no problems though.

I was getting decent battery life when I flashed 2.0d originally so this might not help you but after I flashed the newest radio my battery life got way better. I can listen to slacker radio for 4 hours while studying and use the phone intermittently throughout the day and get about 12 hours out of the battery life.
anybody who has crappy battery life check if your phone is on GSM auto PRL?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=651848&highlight=battery
I'm running Fresh Rom and my battery is great. I haven't charged my phone since 6:30am this morning(it's 8:30pm here now) and it's at 60%. I'm using the new radio too.
scratch what I said yesterday, lol... my phone randomly rebooted overnight and now I can't get it to stop being 100% awake...
EDIT: Tried rebooting, tried "power cycling" phone, did the CDMA (Auto PRL) fix just in case, didn't install any new apps, battery use shows TWS at 0%, Cell Standby Time on = My total uptime.
Spare Parts Battery History shows my phone as 100% running, no sleep time.
Spare parts partial wake usage just shows Android System..
Battery is draining like crazy..

That shouldnt be an issue any more. Flipz fixed it in 2.0d.
Change your screen brightness to auto. When I first flashed it was at the highest setting and killing my battery. A lot better now...

[Q] My Battery is suicidal please help.:)

ok so i own the sprint htc hero obviously and i keep switching between plain cm6 and blackmod every few months or so. For my Kernel i use
Decad3nce-DecaFuct #589 691mhz CFS stable
i keep it clocked at 245-691 with collins battery tweak
i charge my phone to 100% and then unplug it. screen off, gps, mobile data, sync, bluetooth, 3g, everything is off. brightness is as low as it can go. so im doing everything i can to save battery power. if i leave it in my pocket all day it CAN last about8 hours....that being said at that point its basically a brick. however if i turn anything on obviously it dies faster. if im online for 45 min my phone will die. a five minute youtube video costs me 32% of my battery. there is no way that my phone should be acting this way and im out of ideas. i have tried switching roms, wiping battery stats, running through battery cycles reverting back to stock via the RUU nothing works.
PLease if you wonderful people have any ideas *PLEASE* help me with this.....
Well you could try running a more current rom like CM7 or Aosp's CM7 GingerBread. Also you could try running your roms without the Collins battery tweak. You could try using dec's battery tweak if you prefer to use one. You could try calibrating your battery. Just a few things you could try that might help.
Edit: Also do you have an on screen off screen profile set with the battery tweak???
Yea its me Again With the

i have tried cm7 and still had the same issue. and i am partial to the battery tweaks because setcpu and ocwidget seem like they would eat up resources wouldnt they?....i dont think ive heard of decs battery tweak tho....unless you mean the DECAmod one and i thought that was only for 2.1 roms.....maybe i got my facts mixed up tho...i calibrate my battery everytime that i flash a new rom to the phone. as far as i know the version i have does not allow for seperate profiles for screen on screen off.
I had the same problem and out of curiosity i dropped my processor speed from 710 to 576. Yeah its slower but on Aosp/CM7 and with sd-ext done its plenty fast. and with everything on and the phone in my pocket i drop about 4% every hour.

Deca's BattMod will work on CM7/aospCM7. However with CM7 you really don't need it (or anything else to overclock/underclock) as CPU settings are in the ROM itself. In fact, it is recommended that you don't, as they will/could fight with each other.
If properly calibrating the battery (properly is the key word) doesn't get you at least a solid day with moderate use, I would say it's time to look for a new battery. How old is it? Mine is about two years old and I still get about 2 days, stock aospCM7 ROM and kernel, moderate use with ONDEMAND 176/729

I'd still say that 4% an hour, without using the phone is way too much. If your battery is still good, you should be able to get better than that by at least half (2% an hour drop).
I have been up for two hours (unplugged at 6AM, it's now 8:56AM) and am still at 99% and that is with moderate usage (a couple texts, sent and received an email, one 3 minute phone call, some Facebook and XDA).
See ^^ for my settings. Give it a try
My brothers hero would die incredibly fast also no matter what we tried. We ended up RUUing and taking it into sprint. They did a battery test said they didn't know why it died so fast and ordered him a brand new one. He had normal batt life again after that.
So if all else fails try taking it into sprint and see what they tell you.

When you go to the battery usage stats in Settings--About Phone, what does it show you? That may show/tell what is eating up your battery so much.
What is your signal like? Are you in an area with poor signal? If so that could possibly cause the battery drain -- a phone working hard to keep a decent signal eats battery pretty quickly. Consider upgrading to the newest .29 radio baseband (if you're on Sprint) if you haven't already.
Try to check out the battery usage in your Settings and report back what it shows. We may can help you notice anything out of the norm.

my phone is about 7 months old. so battery *shouldnt* be crapping out quite yet as battery life on one of these seems to typically be about two years before it starts to crappify.
@MrDowntown12
i thought about that but was worried that the ruu doesnt get it COMPLETELY back to stock. good to know it does and that someone pulled one over on sprint ^_^ if all else fails then ill try this but in all honesty they will prob still charge me $50 and i just dont have it.....
@chromiumleaf
battery usage is:
Display 59%
cell standby 12%
Phone idle 11%
android OS 8%
Media 5%
setcpu 3%
google search 2%
gallery 3d 2%
"top -m 5 -n 1" returns
process id 2337 at 8% and 163 which i believe is the phone itself if im not mistaken is at 5%......everything else is zeros.
also i think my coverage is pretty average. throughout the day i typically have about three bars but my dbm is 80-100 the whole day and im not sure if thats high.
fyi these stats are while doing my battery cycles if it matters. and ive been unplugged for about 25 min and ive dropped from 100 to 91 with doing nothing but checking battery stats and running the terminal for a minute.
Edit: i know that android os is getting more and more popular....do you think its possible that i caught some kind of virus somehow???? the only ones ive seen are in china but is it likely that my phone is infected? also i want to run cm7 but as far as i can tell there really arent any stables out yet just the experimental nightlies and ive tried it and it didnt fix drain *immediately* but maybe after batt cycles? second edit^_^ i apologize i did not know exactly what you meant by signal. after finding THIS
-105 to -100 = Really bad
-99 to -90 = Not great
-89 to -80 = Pretty good
-79 to -65 = Good
Over -65 = Excellent
i now understand and my dbm hovers at about 88 half the time and the other half it shoots to 97

Ok so if all you were doing in 25 mins was checking battery stats and running the terminal for a little bit, it seems strange that Google Search, Gallery 3d, and Media would have some battery pull on them -- did you even open/use them at all? If not, then it seems like maybe you have some programs running non-stop in the background that are eating your battery even when you're not using them. Try clearing data and cache for any of those in your Settings-->Applications-->Manage Applications menu.
Also, just curious...when you change roms, do you wipe everything (data, dalvik, ext) before flashing to a new one?

I forgot to say that i have music playing through headphones whenever im awake lol, but yeah ill give that a try.
No I had not used any of those. I tried what you suggested and the battery is draining faster T^T. And I always do a full wipe. I wipe data and dalvik reformat my sd and as soon as I her the rom on my phone I go through three battery cycles.
HAHA Solved! for me anyway.
ok so my guess is that its not reading my batts full capacity because i didnt charge fully before one of my flashes. so what i did was:
*charge to full
*run my ruu to revert back to stock
*with phone -ON- charge til green
*power -OFF-
*charge for another two hours
*boot into recovery
*flash like you normally would
*Run through your Battery cycles like normal
since i have done that my battery has been fine. or as good as a battery on a smartphone can be anyway lol

Milestone RC4 CM7 nadlabak draining battery FAST

Hey guys,
I'm running the latest release from nadlabak, 04.10 one.
I experienced battery issues on some previous releases as well, however i don't know if it's this release or what, but the battery usage is draining very fast!
I am not really running anything, I have liveprofile auto memory manager, and handset sms. liveprofile doesnt even really run, i barely use it so it should be either in the background or not running.
i looked at the battery usage stats, it shows email is using about 40% of the battery draining.
my phone is VERY warm, feels like the cpu churning through something... i can run at 52vsel with 1000mhz vrate. fine and still my battery is about 40% after 2 hours.
I reset to factory clock speeds and it drains the same if not faster!
not sure what's going on but its driving me nuts, google maps also shows to be running in the background, however i never turn it on, i reboot my phone, leave it as is and it shows maps is using 10% battery usage roughly when i havent even initiated it to be running(unless it always has a service in the background?)
i had releases from march that ran better, about 8 hours of battery life. and i believe even a april release was working fine. but now this latest release especially seems to suck up the battery, i dont know if its the releases or if something else has changed...but its very annoying holding a very WARM phone and having the battery get sucked up in 3 hours.
Looking at spare parts, does it sleep at all?
40% usage from email is high so something is wrong there but I doubt it's CM7.
Also, what AMM settings are you using?
Hi there, I'm running the following:
vmheap 40mb
amm: 6, 13, 24, 40, 51, 63.
any suggestions?
where do i find out if it sleeps, im in spare parts.
In Spare Parts, the first item is Battery History.
Go there and it will show how long your battery has been running (%) since unplugged.
If you select the top drop down list, select Partial Wake Usage to see which apps might be keeping the phone awake.
Where did you get those AMM numbers from?
I'd suggest my Balanced 3 (6-8-26-28-30-32) for a nice mix of free memory without being overly aggressive on the background apps.
If you use any of my scripts, disable AMM from having superuser permissions.
I had gotten the stats from another popular thread on this forum.
ill try your stats as well.
vmheap still 40?
also i still notice email is the one that has a huge bar graph usage on the partial usage stat page. not sure why email is being kept awake..
should i factory reset?
have you wiped cache/dalvik? If not do that.
Sent from my Milestone
I had wiped the caches multiple times, tried a lot of things, everything accept a factory reset.
I did a factory reset for the hell of it, set the amm settings as requested vmheap to 40.
everything seems to be running smooth and fine at 1000mhz 54vsel
and the battery usage is at 90% while being unplugged for 7 hours, will monitor to see if the usage drops substantially later on in the night but so far i think things may be fixed.
Battery usage is nearly constant.
That's not good at all.
Something is keeping it away.
What does spare parts show now for partial wake apps?
The partial usage is like 5% now vs what was like 50%. and email isnt even probably 2%. handcent sms is taking up the 5% roughly.
its at 80% after being on battery for 8 hours 26 mins. and i have probably used it for about 30-45 mins worth of on screen time, rest idle.
Oh wait, I think I misunderstood.
You meant that you had 90% left and only 10% used up, right?
If that's the case, that's pretty amazing.
I have expirienced that if I haven't done full wipe(factory reset) my battery is drainin like a crazy. That's happing in all roms I have used. So my opinion is to apply any update or now rom on clean Milestone
how to delete apps in android
i have recently started using android on htc hd2.. i am bit annoyed with the fact that i could not unistall a few apps which i am never going to use. eg liveprofile..and it keeps starting automatically
so could anyone tell me how to remove such apps?

horrible battery

Is it just for me? After a full charge the screen on time is about 2 hours.. Tried cm11 and other custom roms without luck.. When i bought the phone and wasnt on KitKat the screen could pass 4hours. Huge different!
In battery info the only program that drain the battery is the system it self . any tips?
check your rom and kernel, any overclock setting is active.
check battery usage to find what drain your battery.
Mine have 4h30 - 6h screen on (just wifi, without mobile data)

@colors Battery life isn't as good as I think it could have been but at completely stock and with nothing on the phone the phones battery is pretty phenomenal, an idle Z1 will stay on for over a week, infact i've seen some phones with 19 days before now quoted within stamina mode.
Just took a pic of one in my workplace and it's saying just over 19 days, that's not too bad for a phone which is always on and capable of receiving apps via wifi (see picture attached)
I know that 19 days is excessive and no one here is ever going to get anywhere near that or even a week, unless you don't use the phone, the problem most of us face is the apps that we use and their footprint on our phones, affecting battery life and performance.
Take a good look at your apps and what you use and see what you could do without or what could be affecting battery.
A clean install will usually give you great battery if theres nothing on the phone to slow it down, eliminating apps one by one might seem mundane but it's key to great battery life, after a while you'll learn whats bad and whats acceptable.
Using the likes of CM11 could cause even greater battery drain as it's all custom stuff, not to mention that some things within the system aren't working as good as they could be, there is still a lot of work before things are perfect, double tap to wake for example is a feature which could cause massive drain.
Always perform a full wipe and don't restore anything via recovery, leave it as a bare rom until you can verify the ROM you are using is without issue.
Hope this helps
