[Q] Auto brightness setting disappeared?? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Always have had auto brightness on, it works for me.
But, after adding the 'power' widget to the homescreen (which can control brightness settings) and fooling with the brightness a few times, i decided i wanted it set back to auto.
Went into the menus, and there is no tick box for auto anymore, in the brightness setting. Just the slider.
Took the widget off the homescreen, no change. Rebooted, still no change.
What gives?? Anyone else have this happen?
Bell Vibrant
rooted/JM5/launcherpro
EDIT: Solved problem. Was the LCD density, i guess it squashed the box and hid the setting.

the widgets on screens, usually cycles through the different modes
just keep cycling until you get it back
or simply go into Settings > Display > Brightness (make sure check mark is green)

That's the thing though - there is no check box anymore!!
Very curious as to how a system setting could just disappear like that.

Settings - display - brightness and there it is just above the slider on the lrft ?
Is here for me and I also have the brightness widget.

i think it might be JM5 firmware you are using
i'm using the official JH2

I can't help with the problem, but I can say that I'm running JM5 and have the "Automatic brightness adjustment" checkbox in the "Sound and display" settings.

wow, that makes it even more weird and intriguing....
how did the [OP] managed to lose that check box?

Wish i knew. And i want it back! Pretty sure all i did was add the 'power' widget, play with it for a bit, and it was gone.
I am quite certain it was working right after the JM5 flash, although to be completely honest i did not actually check. If it wasn't working i think i would have noticed rather quickly, its pretty obvious when its doing its job.
Added screenshots for the skeptics.

i'm not skeptic, i just can't figure out how can it has dissapeared on its own, yet i can't figure out which software could do something like that.
seems like worse case scenario is to reflash the ROM again to get it back

Was it there after you changed your font? Try the stock one.

Alright, i figured it out. Might add this over in the pertinent thread, too.
It was the LCD density setting. I guess it squashed the box down so much that the check box was entirely hidden! Man, what an odd problem.
Thanks for the help!

Wow, thanks for sharing
this is something worth being Noted on the Wiki
anyone got time to make an entry?

No problem, i'd add it myself if i knew where to put it...?

Thanks for posting the solution! I ran into the same problem and i was perplexed as to what happened.

screen brightness program?

Does anyone else notice that even on the lowest setting the screen is still really bright? Does a program exist or can someone program one to dim the screen further for use in the dark? Thanks

There are a number of programs in the market that will allow fine tuning. Power Manager, Toggle Switch, etc.

Your answer was even less relevant than mine and I thought I was going on a tangent. At least my idea would in theory work.
Power Mgr won't make it any less bright than the phone currently allows and how would toggle switches do anything for the brightness? lol

Well... Toggle Settings (sorry I called it switch before...) shows %'s, and allows you to set it the brightness from the app. it doesn't let you set it below 0% though (might be a nice feature...)
Power Manager allows you to set the brightness and to save 'profiles' eg. "night time' with the settings you want.
At least my answer had two apps that allow you to change the display brightness... goof

I found a program called aSettings that will allow you to set maybe 5% lower than the stock Settings program. However, this screen is still way too bright when using in the dark.

I set the aSettings to "0" and checked in Toggle Settings (for reference). TS reports display brightness at -4%. Seems there may be hope if we get one of the programmers to tweak things a little more.

Hero's brightness control.....

So I'm so sick of going back into settings everytime to change the brightness
Whenever I try to use brightness widget or PowerManagerPro Freaking OS changes the brightness back to what it was right away.
So every time I go outside I have to go to settings to turn up brightness cuz I can't see shot especially with screen protector and other way around or especially at nigh when driving and trying to look at the GPS and its just too damn bright.
There got to be a way to get powermangerpro or brightness widget to work on hero, its a such a pain in the ass plus it will save the batt too.
So how can that b fixed?

[Q] Auto-Orientation Check

Is there any way to check which applications are causing the orientation on my Tab 7" to lock?
When my tab boots up, during scanning of the media files, the screen can rotate automatically when i change the orientation of the tab.
After scanning and a while, the screen will be locked, as it will not rotate anymore when I turn it around. (discovered this while playing burn the rope. Keep failling 1st stage).
I have browsed through the Application settings but I dun see any mention of them having access to lock the orientation.
I have also upgraded to the 2.3.3 firmware recently. The applications I reinstalled in my Tab did not cause this issue to happen before the upgrade.
And before somebody points me out the obvious, yes I checked the Auto-Orientation Lock in the pulldown menu. Whether it is on or off it doesn't matter. Same issue. Locked.
May be another obvious thing that you've just not mentioned, but have you checked settings -> display -> auto-rotate? It can cause a stupid conflict with the "lock orientation" toggle.

I did not mention it because under display, there is no auto-rotate option.

Screen rotation issue

Just installed CM on my Nook HD+... WOW!
Anyway, in the catagory of 'if it ain't broke, why did I fix it?"... In looking at settings, I noticed under 'display' that the Auto rotate wasn't checked (however, it was auto rotating just fine). I figured it should be checked, and now the home screens won't rotate (apps that are supposed to rotate still do so, it's only the home screens). I tried unchecking/ rechecking/restarting and a combination of those to no avail. Any ideas on this one?
And as long as I'm asking questions... the 'click' when typing is pretty annoying. I can't find an option to silence that?
Thanks!

Try going to settings, accessibility and see it it is checked there. Also checkbox in launcher settings.
The keyclick sound is found in settings, language and input, aosp keyboard, and the settings box to the right. There is a sound on keypress checkbox.
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM10.1 on emmc.

Yep, it was in the launcher settings. Dunno if that got auto unchecked or what, but now that it's checked, home screens rotate. Also, the keypress click is gone. Thanks, I really appreciate it! :victory:

Kill the Always On Display

How can I toggle the AOD to be completely off? This is driving me nuts. I'm aware of the settings within the Motion Sense area of settings. The "show when nearby" seems to take, however no matter what I do the clock still appears no matter what as an AOD. I've tried disabling the following in different combinations to no avail:
Motion Sense
com.google.oslo
Pixel Ambient Services
com.google.intelligence.sense
Motion Sense Bridge
com.google.android.apps.motionsense.bridge
Even tried the clock app itself
com.google.android.deskclock
Whenever these are initially disabled it seems to work for a minute or so but then the clock pops back up on the AOD. I just want the toggles to work! This is for when I'm driving and my my phone is mounted where it faces me. I already have 2 clocks in my car and don't need a third it's more of an annoyance than anything else.
Do you have Always On disabled in the Lock Screen settings?
Display>Lock Screen Display>Always on

Search for "always on" in settings and turn it off
display / lockscreen / always on - does not exist
Searching for "always on" yields no results.
I don't have a lock screen set as I don't need it, though I did try setting one temporarily to see if the option showed up, but nothing. That's how I used to do it on my note but they moved everything around on 10.

You really don't have always on under..settings/display/advanced/lock screen display....then scroll to the bottom??
Display, scroll all the way to the bottom, select lock screen display, bottom third of the screen you'll see Always on, toggle it off. You can still have it light up by tapping, lifting, or triggered by soli, in any combination if you wish.
edit.. Ninja'ed me Badge, it's there, he just missed it.

It's probably because you went around disabling apps. Enable the Pixel ambient Services.

With everything re-enabled and a hard reboot, I set a screen lock. Then went back to display and the "lockscreen" option was now available. I turned off AOD and then disabled the screen lock and it took. No more clock.
It seems as though the AOD toggle being buried in the lock screen options, which is only available when one is on will take no matter of a lock screen is set. So every time I want to change this I have to go through this process. I wish there was a Quick Settings shortcut for this.

Well it's not exactly meant to be toggled on and off often like the ones in the Quick Settings pulldown menu. The easiest and quickest way is just searching "Always on" in settings and you can actually toggle it right there as seen in the screenshot.

Also if you are not using the active edge for anything critical you might try button mapper by flar2 and see if one of the options can be set to it. Or maybe even on of the other options in his app will apply it.

I don't now and have never had a lock screen enabled on my phone and can and have always been able to enable or disable always on display. Unless you disabled some app affecting this as mentioned above it should be there for you too just as it is for the rest of us. You may want to look into that and see what's hanging you up.

I haven't been able to do it since it was virgin out of the box, the option just isn't there. Doing it on my old Note 8 was super easy it was right where it was supposed to be. Although I have found a workaround for anyone on the off chance I'm not the only one experiencing this.
Being rooted, I downloaded ShortcutMaster and used the app explorer and poked around until I found;
[Setup Wizard]
com.google.android.pixel.setupwizard
tap and scroll down to;
com.google.android.pixel.setupwizard.alwaysondisplay.AlwaysOnDisplayOptInActivity
Choosing [launch] triggers the screen from inital setup to toggle the AOD.
Set it as favorite, or Homescreen (on the paid version)
Launch Shortcut master each time to change it or use the homescreen icon shortcut.
The setting seems to take each time I've done it so far.
