CM6 screen rotation slow - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else noticed how long it takes your screen to go from 90deg to 180/270? I am using CM6 and the ADW it comes with. Any settings to speed this up or is this just how it is?
I swear 5.0.8 didnt feel this slow when rotating.
thx!

Just tried this. MY GOD. its so friggin fast. I forgot all about it til you mentioned. Lol. So many mods you forget to change the settings sometimes.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

I noticed that the apps scrolling was slower, but now it's much faster. Thanks!

thanks for that tip - it definitely makes scroll and animation speed faster.
HOWEVER - screen orientation is not affected in the least by this setting. Is this a cm6 issue or a launcher issue?

I would think this would be related to performance in general. So if the phone is performing well, it rotates quickly. If it's performing poorly, it rotates slowly...
There's a few things you can try to improve performance. Overclocking helps a little, but it's not a huge difference. Keeping apps from auto-starting on boot helps, I'm not sure of a simple way on how to do it... Suggested method for preventing apps from auto-starting.
That same user also uses an app called 'DroidWall' to prevent apps from connecting without permission. Might help with performance as well (not sure, but it can't hurt).
Anything that will slow down your phone has to go. Widgets are killer I've found... As much as I like them, they made the home screen SO slow. On that same tangent of home screens, have you looked at different launchers? The stock 'Launcher2' is kinda slow itself. I like ADW myself - there's many others out there (Zeam, GoLauncher EX, Launcher Pro to name a few...)

I'm not sure what can be done to fix that to be honest... new one to me .

micro ui lag

wondering if any1 experiences lag (not delay between touch and screen response time, but stuttering of the ui) when scrolling thru homescreens? i'm on virtuous unity 2.37 and i notice most of the time the ui lags a bit when scrolling thru homescreens. this is quite a disappointment as most users say that there is absolutely no lag.. is it me or they're lying?

thats the rom itself...
arhd there is no lag at all
no. even on arhd i do experience similar stuttering when scrolling through homescreens. the time where the lag is most prone to happen is unlocking right after waking the phone.. i tested both sense 2 and 3 roms and the ;lags are still present.

Do you have widgets on the homescreens? I noticed that some animated widgets cause terrible lag when scrolling.
Yes, i have experienced it too in VU 2.37.
Have noticed it almost all the other ROMS as well, including ARHD.
but it is quite minimal on all of them & i suppose it can be ignored.
or you could try what scoobysnacks suggested.. it should help
I noticed that in ARHD, the clocks in Daemon Tool always reset whenever I open the program. Is that by design? (i.e. it always shows the default clocks but don't apply them)

[MOD] More smooth scroll for "MOST" roms [New file added Dec/24][OK for Poweramp]

[MOD] More smooth scroll for "MOST" roms [New file added Dec/24][OK for Poweramp]
Add - CM7 officially included this mod so you don't have to do this on CM7.
If you are using recent weekly, just go to Cyanogenmod setting - Performance - Scrollingcache - Force disable.
It will do the same.
I used miui for several days and noticed miui has more smooth scroll than cm7.
For example, if you scroll playerpro's music list in cm7,
it is laggy sometimes but miui has no lag.
I examined logcat while scrolling playerpro list and found GC is working too much.
I googled about that and found some apps use scrollingcache
and it make GC work too much.
(scrollingcache is for faster rendering, but I think it is not working right.)
So I disabled scrollingcache throught the all system.
And playerpro's scrolling just got OK.
This doesn't make your all scroll go smooth.
But some kinds of scroll will be better.
I tested it only on my phone. So I need a tester
This file is for CM7 weekly dec 10.
http://api2.ge.tt/0/82r90WB/0/blob/download
Just rename it to framework.jar,
copy it to /system/framework,
set proper permission,
and reboot.
EDIT - Made another one. Try this! I actually 'felt' the smoothness with this one. (And of course, it is for CM7 weekly dec10.)
http://api2.ge.tt/0/9aBqPXB/0/blob/download
Please tell me what you feel.
And...I think maybe blur roms will take effect by this method.
So stay tuned. I'll test it at blur based rom later
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT Dec/24 - For Christmas gift, I've made several files for most roms.
These files have volume step mod too.
It will have more precise volume and make your scroll smooth.
It's not a big present, but I hope people would enjoy this.

EDIT - Posted HOWTO at the android forum because it can be done for all android phones.

EDIT - Some people are complaining about volume mod that it is not working with poweramp.
You can use it by changing your setting.
Power Amp settings - Audio Engine - Advanced Tweaks - Uncheck 'Direct Volume Control'
This will solve the problem.
This info is by 'wd2347' from Korean Atrix forum.

I will test out more tomorrow and let you know
Will test this later on when i flash CM7, but could this fix the laggy homescreen problem our device seems to have? Every time i slide to unlock, the animation is laggy, but if i slide halfway and let go, the next time i slide to unlock, it's suddenly smooth (like you had to cycle through the animation once to get it smooth).
Good research! Looking nice
Hmm... when I try this, some things get slower like scrolling feels a (very) tiny bit 'rougher' than before.
But apart from that, the music app seems to be smooth.
This might need a further looking into because I have also noticed certain places where scrolling lags and it's quite frustrating.
I don't think you should TOTALLY disable the scrolling cache, I think you should decrease it and experiment at which value gives the best balance. Can't you take the value from MIUI?
But good start!

Thanks for testing. You are feeling same as me.
And I made another one and linked it at main post.
Will you please test once more?
OK so after trying V1 out for a little while things seem to feel smoother except right after a reboot everything seems to lag but after about 5mins. when the phone is done with all its start up processes its fine I will try out V2 in a few mins.
YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!!!!!
There is NO lag AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!
Everything is BUTTERY smooth and what's better is that it seems to have solved the 'low quality overscroll issue' on my ROM!!
This will DEFINITELY be integrated into my ROM. VERY good work man and try to find more hidden tweaks in that framework.jar because the two tweaks you HAVE found are just amazing!!
Ok I'm done with this today.
(It's 1:26am here duh.. I'm so sleepy...)
Please feel free to test guys.
And Notorious544d , thanks for testing again.
This REALLY works

Thanks for your work AndroidON. Just tried the second version on Neutrino GT, though I don't see much of a difference. I may not be using the apps this is helpful for. The only app where scrolling is a trainwreck for me is PowerAmp. The damn UI looks nice but it kills scrolling in list views. Since installation, I have to say that scrolling is more consistently choppy as opposed to variably choppy, but that may just be the OC'd kernel. For all apps I consider choppy, including PowerAmp, scrolling always achieves my standard for "butter" when in landscape view, even without OCing. Do you see this kind of performance improvement with your fix for your apps in portrait view?
Haven't noticed any other major improvements. I never had a problem with the quality of overscrolling on Neutrino which Notorious claims to have been fixed with your mod. Your effort and research skill is still very much appreciated!

I installed Poweramp and scrolled through list.
And...I see portrait scrolling is 'little' slower than landscape scrolling.
Did you have same problem in other roms like MIUI?
If so, I think it is the limit of speed for 2d performance.
I am not sure about that, but I don't see any problems through logcat.
Sorry for not giving you help.
PS. I think it will be OK when we get complete hw accelerated ICS.

So this will not help spb launcher.

slight 'jerky' animation?

just got my razr i here in the uk. love the device so far. fantastic form factor and importantly for me, a superb battery life one things nagging me though...is anyone else seeing a slight 'jerky' animation? i see it when swiping left to the 'quick settings' screen and when pressing the apps button. once in the apps though the left <> right swiping is perfect! pressing the home button from the home screen to show 'manage pages' too is pretty jerky or laggy but not sure if that is how it should be this guy sees it initailly when starting the game just before 4.00 mins in
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SILUVIwiNF0
but once the game is running all seems ok. this guy i can see it at 1.57 when he swipes left from the homescreen to the 'quick settings'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rfud0GFXRg&feature=related
seems like it occurs when at some places within the phone but not everywhere. have i been spoilt using a nexus for the past week running a silky smooth jellybean vs this running ics? or is it a defective unit?
I would say on mine there is the slightest pause when moving to the quick settings that I hadn't noticed before! I hope it doesn't bug me now!!
Going to the manage pages screen or indeed the "helicopter view" (pinch zoom on the homescreen) is really jerky. But I dont find any noticeable lag or jerkiness anywhere else. In fact I find the whole experience smoother and slicker than even my Nexus 7. The only better Android experience I had was Jelly Bean on the Galaxy Nexus which is super silky.
Jelly Bean is slightly faster at a number of things especially switching screen context as the CPU is ramped to a high clock speed as soon as you touch the screen. I noticed the improvement in opening things like the app drawer when I had my Galaxy Nexus and upgraded to JB.

ooops sorry about that! :laugh:well i've adjusted both 'window animation scale' and 'transition animation scale' from 1x to off and that certainly speeds the whole ics experience up so that is worth doing if you have not. hope it does not affect the phone in another adverse way though

Does that not disbale animations?
don't think so. just seems to speed things up a touch.
This does indeed deactivate some Animations but only the ones Navigating in Apps or Settings and so on.
The actual Launcher Animation is not changed at all.
I have the same lag and its not so bad but still somehow annoying.
Didn't noticed that so much in all the test videos out there.
Someone tried to do a hard reset and start from scratch? Maybe fixes it.

I noticed really jerky animations on an M I saw at a Verizon kiosk, and the i seems to be fine from videos I see.

Will someone please tell me why Google hasn't improved the rotation speed?!

I thought this was originally a product if poor sensors. But it wasn't. Then I thought it was a bug. Updates went by, then I saw that wasn't the case either. It just seems to be a "feature".
This feature is really beginning to annoy me! Can anyone tell me why it takes about two seconds before the screen rotates in stock Android. My G.Nex takes about the same time. I'm guessing any remedy involves rooting, which is annoying. I'm rooted, I just don't think this should be necessary for people to do (IF it's necessary).
Can anyone shed light on this?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Actually if it rotates in less than a second it'll be more annoying trust me. Like if you are typing and just tilt your device a little bit, it'll be a disaster right? I don't know however if you can modify this.
Sent from my Nexus 7
Aokp and others allow you to change this. Many roms have a shorter rotation speed. They actually did quicken it, 4.0 was really slow. Yes its a feature.

I agree with this.. The feature is there to prevent you from rotating the screen by accident. Say using the cam in video chat while holding the device in your hand.. While typing and walking around..
Not sure why this is such a bother to you Not everything should be Instant. If it were instant you would also see the screen refresh as its turning the icons..
the ui . would have to turn resize screen background re position the icons and the notification/ now settings menu all in a fraction of a second. The delay helps with my first sentence as well as gives the Interface to make necessary changes for the new orientation.. Good things come to those who wait..
The rotation pause time is perfect for me.

If anyone has used the iPad, other iDevice or some other non-stock Android devices, the rotation delay is only about half a second and smooth. There is no confusion or constant accidental rotations, it's responsive rather than intentionally slow. Plus, I really don't think too many people accidentally rotate their devices too many times.
Another example is that with my N7, JB 4.2, rooted but stock, It can take up to 4 seconds to rotate on the PIN secured lock screen. In what way is this useful?
Its less than one second on my stock 4.2...
The rotation speed seems much longer on 4.2 than it did on 4.1.2. I noticed the difference immediately after updating.
You can play with the 3 screen animation parameters - they are located in setup under the developers section about half way down the page.
-Window animation scale
-Transition animation scale
-Animation duration scale
These parameters affect the speed at which the display dims and brightens, rotates and transitions..
If you set the 3 parameters to zero, you get a binary effect on all animations - in other words, a single step from one position/brightness/orientation to the next.
I found that you may have to reboot the device (or restart the window manager?) for any changes to take effect.
Hope this helps.
