Vibrant Bible
No one is responsible for what YOU do with YOUR phone. Any software modification to technology carries with it a certain risk of permanent damage, when you modify your device you accept this as your own responsibility.
XDA specific stuff:
Useful information/posting rules
XDA Developers Android application
Useful software (PC)
SuperOneClick- One click rooting software (Windows/Linux only)
Heimdall - Odin equivalent, except less buggy.
Odin - Samsung's flashing tool, Heimdall is recommend.
Vibrant Customization Kitchen - Quickly and easily modify ROMs to suit your specific taste/needs
Samsung Galaxy S Windows drivers (x86 and x64)
Auto-Deodexer/ROM builder - untermensch
Quick glossary
ADB - The Android Debug Bridge. A collection of tools that any rooted Android user should have. ADB allows one to interact with their device from a terminal interface. This enables the user to do a variety of tasks such as sideloading applications and more.
Android - A Linux based operating system created and mostly designed by Google. The major revisions are 1.0, 1.1, 1.5 (Cupcake), 1.6 (Donut), 2.0/2.0.1/2.1 (Eclair), 2.2 (Froyo) 2.3 (Gingerbread), and 3.0 (Honeycomb - tablet only). The majority of Android major revisions are named after desserts.
APK - Android PacKage. These are, basically, Android applications and all of their data. They are run via the Dalvik Virtual Machine on your device.
Bootloader - The part of a computer that loads the operating system. If this is damaged/deleted you are screwed.
Flashing - The act of installing a ROM onto an embedded device or emulator.
Heimdall - A community designed alternative to Odin, Heimdall allows you to do everything Odin does in a much safer, less buggy environment.
JFD, JI6, KA6, etc - Samsung's naming system for the software updates they build. If you look at the full name of a firmware update, say T959UVKA7, T959 is the device model (Vibrant), UV is the region code (UnitedStates Vibrant, maybe?), K is the year of release (J = 2010, K = 2011), A is the month (A-L = January-December), and the number at the end is the revision number. So the firmware name is telling you "Vibrant, United States, 2011, January, revision 7.
Odin - The infamous flashing tool designed by Samsung, Odin is a Windows program that allows users to push ROMs, radios, and more onto their device from the comfort of their PC. Notoriously buggy. Heimdall is the recommended alternative.ROM - The name given to software on embedded devices (mobile phones, for the most part). "Flashing" a ROM means that you install that software on your device.
Overclocking - Increasing the "clock" of a processor to increase its speed at the expense of battery life and possibly your phone. Not all processors overclock the same, even if the hardware is identical. One phone with a Hummingbird SoC will not be able to overclock to 1.2ghz, yet another would be able to overclock to 2.0ghz (very unlikely).
Radio/Modem - The parts of a firmware that allow communication between the operating system, the telecommunication hardware, and a mobile network. Some radios give good battery life, some good signal, some neither.
XDA - This site, XDA is a community of likeminded developers, hackers, and users who modify various phones running various operating systems (Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7, and Android specifically).

ROMs
Important note: All ROMs outside of the category "Odin/Heimdall" are flashable through ClockworkMod recovery. If you download a .tar file, or a ROM containing a .tar (Odin/Heimdall flashable ROMs) that is listed outside of the "Odin/Heimdall" section please let me know!
2.3 Gingerbread
These ROMs are based on Android 2.3 "Gingerbread," the latest version of Google's Android OS (as of 1/21/2011).
Gingerbread Build 1 [tech demo] - sombionix
Gingerbread port i9000 alpha v6 - supercurio
2.2 Froyo
These are ROMs that are based on Android 2.2 "Froyo," these ROMs are currently (as of 1/21/2011) the latest official ROMs. Froyo introduced the JIT compiler, bringing with it major speed boosts in both benchmarks and practice.
Official/stock (with root)
These are the official ROMs from Samsung, they include bloatware (Add to Home, Accounts and Sync, etc), RFS, fixed 3E recovery (typically), root, and occasionally busybox.
KA7 (deodexed) - Samsung
KA6 (deodexed) (first 2.2 OTA) - Samsung
JL4 (odexed and deodexed) - Samsung
Stock bloatless
These are the official ROMs from Samsung, slightly tweaked to have no bloatware (Add to Home, Accounts and Sync, etc) and occasionally Voodoo (which can be disabled).
Br1cK'd stock & Voodoo (KA6)
KA5 (odexed) - jellete
JK6 (odexed) - Ashex1
TouchWiz-based
These ROMs are based on Samsung's official ROMs, but have major theming and other tweaks applied to them.
Team Whiskey
Nero v4-v5
Nero v3
Nero v2
Axura/Devs4Android
Kana (KA6, AOSP-clone)
Axura v2.2.7.1 (KA5)
Axura 2.2.6.0 (JL5)
Ports
These ROMs were never originally intended for the Galaxy S/Vibrant. They were ported from other devices, and may experience some major issues because of this. Only the experienced ROM flasher should go about flashing these, and be careful while they are at it!
CyanogenMOD 6.1 - #TeamDouche, supercurio, many many others
HTC Sense port - TeamGalaxySense
2.1 Eclair
(outdated as of 1/21/2011)
These ROMs are based on or created by Samsung. They are based on Android 2.1 Eclair, which was the original operating system for all Galaxy S based devices (as of 1/21/2011).
Note: To add *every* old 2.1 ROM to this thread would be a very, very boring task. Personally, I don't see a need for every WinZip and theme to be listed here and I shall only be adding the major 2.1 ROMs (Bionix, Axura, etc). If someone wants to write up a list with all the BBCode formatted with all of the 2.1 ROMs and submit them to me I will gladly add them to the Bible.

I am going to try it while the forum is young and hopefully ill have a decent base and it wont be to hard to keep up, i will have a 9/1/10 update out soon

This is an excellent idea. You should probably add the lag fixes too.

everything seem updated so far beside i think the rom 2.2 from eu it wasnt all that compatible with the vibrant it was from another country from what i hear but it wasnt needed but interested in wat the mod section would bring

yeah
my quad score was 2347 with vib6 and one click lag fix but cm6 should def open my eyes especially a full vanilla rom i hate the screen lock the touchwiz feel even though i got adw on it but jit, flash, and java does sound better i am trynna make due with the limited resources you know

Which cooked Froyo JPM JP6 CUSTOM ROM Lag Fix works best for you on the Galaxy I9000

There is a number of cooked Froyo JPM/JP6 roms with lag fix for the I9000 that were released in the past days, so through this thread I want people to give their own opinion on which rom works best, considering performance, stability, bug free and most importantly battery life
Can you pls share some links with froyo custom roms for i9000? Thanks
For me it's Darky's Dark Steel Rom. It can be found here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
I didn't care much for his integrated theme (I deleted that part) but his Rom his really excellent!
* SGS toolbox
* No error's (for as yet)
* Faster than Eclair 2.1 with OCLF
* Froyo 2.2 with Flashplayer

Get Kernel From Page Posted, Put In Updates Folder In Rom, Flash Rom Then Flash SGS II APPS And Reboot
so we flash cmenards kernel in odin or heimdall and then reboot to recovery to flash the rom?
what do you mean by put the kernel in the updates folder in rom?
How did you get game hub to work?

Not sure why he left that in, the Vibrant doesn't have the hardware to support FM radio. It won't do anything.

Yeah you flash it with odin but he means that if you have not flashed the zip and have it on your computer you can easily replace it the zimage in the updates folder with the Bullet kernel.

Ok I just tried to flash this ROM, followed the instructions, but it reverted back to the "Reinstall Packages" screen.
1. Odin To Stock
2. Rooted Phone
3. Went into CWM, wipe data/factory reset, flash ROM, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik, fixed permissions.
Did I do something wrong here?

Forgot about the kernel. Which of the 2 tar files do I flash? Should I flash the kernel when I am on Stock or during when I flash the ROM, SGS II Apps? I just want to make sure before I try it again.
i flash this but i got a soft brick.
ok now o odin one of the bullet kernels and get stuck on boot animation any ideas guys?
I think im the only idiot! flashing this ****, im going back to cm7 lol!!
I tried to odin cmenards kernel via odin and it got stuck, then tried again and failed. Then I went ahead and flashed the rom and apps and now everytime I reboot it goes to recovery. Im just going to odin back to stock then flash cm7. I followed all instructions, I went back to stock, flashed bootloaders, then tried to flash the kernel and didnt work.
Sorry for being off topic but, did anyone else notice this yet?

[FINAL ROMS] 2.3.7 CyanogenMod 7 and 2.2.2 AOSP FroYo | 2.6.32 kernel | PCFighter

CyanogenMod 7 and AOSP FroYo with .32 kernel
No more updates coming. No more Development by PCFighter.
You can download 2.3.7 v6 and 2.2.2 AOSP from forum.android.pl because pcfighter doesn't want downloads to be posted on xda.
CyanogenMod 7.2 / Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread Features:
- new kernel: 2.6.32 for an ultrafast UI & no lags. It's much smoother and faster than most other ROMs with .29
- SmartAss v2 CPU governor makes the CPU scaling always high enough for no lags and still saves battery life.
- USB tether (which doesn't work on .29 kernel)
- accu temperature (does not even work on stock ROM)
- FM-Radio
- Screen Calibration (?)
- CPU overclock up to 864mHz (you shouldn't go over 825, it just causes bugs, kernel panics and wastes battery juice)
- CyanogenMod 7.2 with all features for a high customizability and great performance
- Screenshots attached
Versions:
CyanogenMod 7 v6: For key backlight copy lights.swift.so to /system/lib/hw from v5. give it chmod 644
or the older telease with key backlight and higher brightness:
CyanogenMod 7 v5
+ Service Pack 1
+ Service Pack 2
+ GApps (Market...)
+ boot.img with zice's fixes and changed colours (no Artifacts on wakeup, CIFS, SWAP)
(+ zice's kernel without changed colours)
Clear dalvik cache & cache after installing
AOSP 2.2.2 FroYo Features:
- new kernel: 2.6.32 for an ultrafast UI & no lags. It's much smoother and faster than most other ROMs with .29
- latest (v20e) kernel source with BFS, SIO, CPU governors for being even faster
- FroYo is faster than Gingerbread has a better battery life and is rock stable. It's for everyday usage and with many features compared to stock 2.1.
- manual network search
- Overclock (not very stable, anyway you won't need it)
- Screen Calibration
- Themes available: First Blood and Sense Theme
- Screenshots attached
Versions:
AOSP 2.2.2 v2.3 with 2.6.32 kernel (sometimes bugs)
AOSP 2.2.2 v1.9 with slower 2.6.29 kernel but working without any bugs
All credits go to PCFighter. Don't post downloadlinks for the ROM.
i would like to put it when some bugs are solved
I am making zip patch to boot a .29 kernel, so you will use rom with full options.
new kernel!!!!
Nice will wait until the .32 kernel fully works like a .29 one
Sent from my GT540 using xda premium
Nice to hear that somebody is working on new kernel.
Gosh!!
We're having .32 kernel. Mike's almost finished with .35. We have AOSP and CM7 Gingerbread, AOSP and CM6 Froyo, AOSP and Stock Eclair. We have so much!!! Thanks to all the devs for making this phone wonderful!
please fix wifi drivers. wifi turning on scanning and error. thanks
I know that, I will release new versions of .32 and .29 maybe today.
I really don't get it why people are asking for the .29 kernel Guys, you have muraiks rom wich is the best it can get on CM7 if you ask me :/ I'd let the developer focus on the .32 kernel MAINLY on this rom :/ as you see, there are few bugs and camera doesn't work which is normal but, it's just my opinion nice work will keep an eye on this one

[kernel][ginger] I9000 vibranted vG.4.0 04.16.2012

This should make life a little easier for those who want to use an I9000 ROM.
This has been tested with the I9000 stock ROM only.
As always, install at your own risk, I am not responsible for any damages.
This kernel was compiled from the Gingerbread I9000 source with the initramfs of the I9000XXJW4 kernel.
I have gotten a few requests to build a kernel for the vibrant. What your looking at is the original reoriented kernel adapted for the vibrant. As a captivate user I have no way to fully test this on vibrant hardware, but previous experience says it should work relatively well. Original captivate thread is located here.
Whats included:
-MobileAP support (aka wireless tethering)
-Correct Headphone/Speaker logic
-Working capacitive touchkeys
-Captivate car/home dock support
-Audio uses dock when available (use this app)
-Wired headset support
-CWM 3.0 recovery (courtesy of Chainfire)
-Support for custom boot animations
-The original Voodoo color and sharpness fix
-Voodoo sound v10
-Compilation optimizations
-Call audio through dock
-Voodoo lagfix
-BLN support
Still to come:
-Probably some other stuff I am forgetting
What is out of scope:
-Overclocked kernel, I personally have not seen a need to change the clock speed.
Home key:
Use the update.zip attached to this post to enable the home button. (works for all GB roms thus far)
Custom Boot Animations
The bootanimation.zip needs to be /system/media/sanim.zip <- notice the name change
Variants
vG.x.x.tar = standard kernel, installed with ODIN, no BLN
vG.x.x.zip = standard kernel, installed with CWM, no BLN
vG.x.x_bln.zip = standard kernel, installed with CWM, includes BLN
vG.x.x_novoo.tar = standard kernel, installed with ODIN, includes BLN, no voodoo lagfix

I tried this kernel on the Simply Stock JVT ROM and the phone was stuck on the Galaxy S screen. I had to odin to Bullet kernel to get it working again.
Try disabling voodoo lagfix then flash this kernel.

Pls I want best Rom Xperia X8?
"Best" is always going to be relative...
For one thing, if you can't / won't unlock the bootloader, then your choice is limited to stock kernel ROMs.
Otherwise (non-stock kernel)

PrimeHD is a possible stand-out, implementing 3MP camera capability - still getting to grips myself, but I understand some others only support VGA resolution - not checked them all!
I'd like to hit jellybean myself, but I'd settle for a good Gingerbread (2.3)
NB. Phone original is 2.1 (Eclair)
Those based on CM6 sources are 2.2 (Froyo) - usually stock kernel
CM7 = 2.3 (Gingerbread) - some are stock kernel, some are custom
CM9 = 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich - ICS)
CM10 = 4.1 (JellyBean) - only a couple on this
Good list here

I think I'm heading to either PrimeHD for the camera implementation, or one of the two Jellybean ROMs
But as with all ROM choices, an overall best is impossible - I've chopped everything below Gingerbread 2.3 - as it's one of the main application support limits - it's not clear if going to 4.1 actually gets many more apps, as the next sticking point is often 4.4 - so I don't care how smooth and silky a 2.1 or 2.2 is.
PS. Also worth looking into a number of possibilities that share the same kernel (some support more than one custom kernel) as it's less hassle to change ROMs when you keep the same kernel.
