SD Card damaged - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was rebooting my phone normally and once it started up, it told me the sd card was damaged.
I plugged the card in to my computer using a card reader and I was asked to format the card.
I have not done anything weird to the card, it just happened after a normal reboot.
Do you guys have any software that can recover the files? I tried a couple but none of them could even detect the card.
Any suggestions are appreciated!

If you are using win 7 try with another PC with XP or boot off a Linux cd to recover the files. My experience with Windows 7 is that it likes to format everything without any apparent reason.

hmm doesn't seem to work on other OS either.
If most of the file recovery software are unable to detect/access the sd card at all, does that mean my only option is to format it?

Faulty 4gb Micro? or phone?

I recently sold my Sandisk 2gb micro and bought a Sandisk 4gb micro. From time to time my stuff on the card get deleted. Since I bought it (3-4 days ago) I have had to reload everyone 4-5x. Has anyone experience this problem?
I'm using the rom that came with the Tilt when it first came out.
Are you using the card outside of the phone on any PC?
If you are, you may need to update the drivers on your PC.
Any SD card above 1Gb requires a new formatting technique as the filing system is different.
Writing to a card on a PC with old SD card drivers can cause file allocation corruption and sometimes you will even lose access to the card completely.
Check out your card maufacturers website or any others (Toshiba, Sandisk etc.) and download any OEM driver updates or new formatting utility they have for you PC.
Failing that, only tranfer data to the card via Activesync (I know its a pain!) after formatting the card on the phone.

That does not mean a great deal! It is only providing a USB link to the SD. If you use the Windows file system to access that card without it having the latest SD file system updates loaded on your PC it will not work correctly.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to sound fussy here but did you get a driver CD with the adapter? Most people don't bother updating the drivers if their computer recognises the device to start with.
Only trying to be helpful.

Hi, no I did not received a driver cd for it. I'm gonna go search for a new driver online.
EDIT: Went to the Sandisk site and they do not have an driver update for this device. Sandisk Micromate SDDR-113
that happened when i installed my 6gb microsd(I transfered files from 2gb microsd to 6 gb). Things started to dissapear but not delete(available memory space didn't go up). You need to reformat the card, and redo everything for it to fix

Yeah weird right. I realize my card was blank but it came out that 1.3gb were being use. I just reformat my card, hopefully this won't happen again.

SD Card Damaged, G1 won't boot.

Title says it all. I unmounted as I should have before turning off USB storage, but when I unplugged the USB cable, it said I have a damaged SD card and that I may need to format it. I hit the OK to format and nothing happened. I tried rebooting and nothing happens. I'm rooted with CM 3.9.7 mod, A2SD, etc. I've tried flashing the recovery, etc, but it can't mount the SD card and so fails. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

do you have a card reader for your computer?
No card reader for my computer.
do you have another phone or device that you can put your sd card in and connect to your computer
yeah, a Dash.
I've run into this problem before. Rebooting the phone. without selecting the format usually fixes it. I think it just happens when the SD card fails to unmount properly.
If you have an update.zip on the SD Card..try applying it through the recovery menu. If it says it fails to mount the SD Card over and over, then your SD Card probably is actually damaged.

Is there any way to fix the card? Like I said, I've got an HTC Dash running WM6 that I can put the card into and connect to the computer. Is there anything to be done?
try to format it from the dash through computer, but im not familiar with dashes
I think I may have figured it out a bit.
The Dash wouldn't recognize the 8GB SDHC, but I fortunately still had the original 1GB, which it did recognize. I was able to transfer the CM 3.9.7 onto it and boot in recovery mode and reload the update.zip file. I'm currently booting up and once that's done, I'll do what is necessary to put my 8GB card in, format it and then try to make everything work again. Suggestions?
you want to use the 3.97? that rom is still experimental. maybe you should use the 3.6.8.1 rom

That's about it...
I usually keep a back up of everything just in case.
Also, for your usb card reader problems...

he might want to try the stable rom though
My plan succeeded! I'm now waiting for the Market to let me download my apps again. It let me download a couple, but stopped for some reason. It's happened before, so I'm not too worried. If I should be, let me know. Thanks.
ok sounds good
For some reason, Google Talk was disabled. I enabled it and voila, everything's all good!

Damaged SD Card

Does anyone know why Android would see the sd card as damaged and the card be fine?
Like I turnoff usb storage and then it will not use the card but if I reboot into recovery I can mount it and copy files fine as well as put it in a card reader and it is fine there too?
Any ideas on how to fix this without a complete format?
Happened to me too once. Everything looked fine even in recovery. My pc could recognize files when I mounted and everything. But in phone it said damaged SD card.
I copied all files to pc, reformatted and all is well...
since there is no damage to the card there has to be another way to do it though. That is what I am saying.

Not sure how much your card worth for you but if I where you I would take the 5 minute and remove the card backup and format it...
Flash can easily get corrupted it usually happen when you move the card from one device to another without proper stopping and even for no reason at all!
Can you explain me why you think the card is good if the hardware tell otherwise ???
The first time I rebooted my Nexus One it told me the card was unreadable and offered to format it. Since there's no way (I can see?) to remove the card without removing the battery, I rebooted the phone, put it in my laptop, ran a filesystem check, no problems. Put it back in the phone and booted, haven't seen the problem since.

Because my computer has no problems with card at all. Data can be moved around and read just fine. Just the phone thinks there is a problem. I am guess that something is telling android there is a problem when no other device sees it. That is why I believe the card is fine.
Same problem here, let me know if you've found a solution
i've had that same problem. just fully formatted it..16GB card.

Does it read in a PC?
If so copy contents off onto PC, reformat SD card as FAT32, then copy contents back over.
Try to format the card on your PC.

I've got the card formatted on my friends phone and then gave it an shot... however it still didn't work... Not sure what else can be done... any other card works fine...
What company and class is your sd card?
same problem.
I've had the same problem. It seems to occur when you disconnect the USB cable from you're phone while files are being transferred. Though I've also had this problem multiple times when the USB cable wasn't even connected to my phone.
You can try to use a microSD-to-usb-converter to backup the files and format it with 'SD Formatter 3.0' from sdcard.org (I'm not permitted to post links yet). Then try to format the microSD again with you're phone and it should work. I recommend you don't put any backupped files back on your microSD since they could have corrupted the microSDcard's filesystem.

Phone wont accept sd card data

So just today I got my phone working with CM 9 and everything works but the phone wont accept my SD card data.
If I go to the gallery it says I need a SD card, so it didn't recognize it but if I go to the file manager I can open my SD card and see all my files it I still can't access them. For example a song I had on the SD card I can see it but it won't let me listen to it.
I'm sure that the SD card isn't broken or anything it works fine on other phones and it did work on this phone until I installed CM 9.
Does anyone know of a solution?

There's two ways to do it first I suggest you back up the files to your PC then place you sdcard back in your phone go to storage and format the external card that way or once you've backed up the sdcard whilst it is still connected to our PC right click on our sdcard and format should list of options

try to do "Fix permissions" going into recovery mode.
It may help... Just try once.. nothing can happen to you device..
