Captivate divx certified? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have read that the captivate is divx certified? Is this true do I need an app to make this happen or is this going to be added with froyo? I hate converting files after downloading..... Just too time consuming
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

The question to ask is, whats the container, whats the file size?

Generally a full length movie seven hundred mb or so, not sure what you mean by container but I am downloading from a windows vista or seven box to my phone

I've played multiple xvid files (each 300mb+) and they've run perfectly fine, so I'm assuming that divx would run fine also.

just download a media player app from the market. i think rock media player or whatever it's called can play a lot of different encoded files that the stock media player can't even recognize

no, the phone is divx certified AS IS. rockplayer isn't required. the default video player app will play xvid and divx by default. and I believe it's even capable of mkv 1080p files

i can verify that a 2.1 gb mkv file encoded in 720p runs perfectly

I've also had a problem playing xvid and divx files (each ~700mb).
they are all labeled avi's. I've tried 3.

I am having problems too trying to play Divx files. I am having issues with the Divx files that I made that are from my movie collection. Here are the characteristics of the files I have been trying to use but they just wont work:
AVI container
Divx Codec (used AutoGK)
AC3 audio (I tried MP3 also didn't work)
File size is between 1-2GB in size.
Can anyone tell why I can't play any of my Divx files? I am transfering these files to my memory card through Windows and then putting the memory card in the device. I would think since this is Divx compatible this should be a no brainer since the files work on a PS3 and Xbox 360 without a problem.
So far only Rock Player will play my files.

Divx doesn't work for the Captivate

Actually I have to disagree. Either I am doing something completely wrong, but there is no way this will play Divx files consistently. I have been tooling around with it for 3 days now and I get nothing but inconsistency. So here is the scoop.
All my divx files are AVI.
All files converted with AutoGK and Divx Codec
Some have AC3 sound others are MP3
Typical file size is between 1.2-2GB
The ONLY files I can get to play on this thing consistently are Xvid encoded files. I have tried Divx files with 2 audio channels, 5.1 sound and none of them work. Heck I even downloaded one of the Divx files from www.divx.com Big Buck Bunny (mobile version) and that didn't work. This did play an HD MP4 that I had but wouldn't play the sound I am guessing because it was AC3.
In the end I don't see how this phone is Divx certified if I can't get a Divx movie to play unless I use Rockplayer, which I don't want to use because that is all CPU and not GPU being used for playback.
For people who do get it working, are you putting the movies on the phone a special way or something?

I play divx and xvid files on mine fine with the stock media player. No converting....just copy and paste.

Actually DivX Plus HD certified
Actually, if you read the press release, the Galaxy S is DivX Plus HD certified. Hence it will play MKV/H.264 just fine. Why they support DivX Plus but not standard DivX, I have no idea. According to specs for Captivate on samsung.com, supported formats are MPEG4, AAC, AAC+, H.263, H.264. Xvid (AVI) seems to also work for most people.
Options for standard def DivX seem to be convert to mp4 or other supported type or use a non-stock video player that supports DivX.

What size are your divx files that you are playing? I am curious to see what the disconnect is with the content that I have.

AVI Playback

Hi!
I m trying to get my TTYN II to playback avi files but cant seem to make it happen... I've tried downloading the Core player but that gives an error saying it doest have the MPEG-4 codec? Where do I get the codec's from?
Thanks,
Neil
it shouldnt ask for mp4 codec if you are playing an avi file. different formats. did you download the latest version of core player? make sure you get the one for pocket pc and the latest version is 0.72RC1. avi works fine for me.
AVI is just a file format, it has nothing to do with the codec. So there can be MPEG4 AVIs. Actually most are (DivX and Xvid are MPEG4). MPEG4 videos don't necessarily have the .mp4 extension.
Don't know how to install the codec though, don't have a Kaiser yet lol.
If you installed the core player (http://www.coreplayer.com/) then you should be able to play avi files. What version are you using ?
Try to uninstall and reinstall it and try again.

I'll be watching for responses as I'm also wanting to play MPEG 4 files (with avi extensions - from ATI's Multimedia Centre Software on my desktop PC) on my TyTN II. I'd prefer just to use a codec to provide this functionality in the built in version of pocket media player (what I currently use for wmv files).

Try this then:

Many thanks!
Thank you for that format expansion cab link texarcana, and it's free too. Will try it out on Cristmas day if I have the time.
[Edit] Alas it didn't allow playing of my ATI Multimedia Centre produced mp4 AVI files - back to wmv for me.

So does this work any better than TCPMP at playing back mp4 files?
Better ? Prolly not.
But instead of installing another player, you just add some codecs with it instead.
Anyway, my personal favourite is the core mobile player (which isnt free)
While I still haven't published the "full" Multimedia Bible, the H.264 Bible at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=The H.264 (a.k.a. MPEG-4 Part 10 and AVC) Bible (in the Wiki) explains a LOT of these issues (what MP4 files are, what they can contain, what players and what codec packs are needed to play them etc)
Ive been using Pocket DivX Player 0.8 and it play7s avi files perfectly

its not bad for freeware

Streaming 720p .MKV files?

has anyone figured out how to stream 720p .mkv files to the tab? i've tried vlc stream and convert but that doesn't work. i've tried tversity and that doesn't work either. when i stream with vlc s&c, i just get a blank screen with no video but i get audio. with tversity, it doesn't even work at all. gives me an error saying video is not supported.
I have some success with Rock Video Player, and cifs supported kernel. I can map a drive, and browse files on my Windows 7 Machine, and pretty much play pretty much everything except large iso files or mpeg or vob files with the size of 4.0G size.

rock video player can play videos over lan? how are you browsing a mapped drive, with es file explorer? you're using clemsyn's kernel? which one are you using: clempatch10.9.3CIFFsvegan.zip or clempatchvegan10.9.8.zip? i don't really know the difference between those two. i'm on vegan b5.1 right now.
@rob, i am also using vegan 5.1, can you explain how you are able to play the mkv files, and also is those mkv files are main profile, is there any high profile you are able to play.
Mine is mostly DVD converted in Mkv files.
yea using ES and whichever kernel, (both work) I can stream avi from win7 machine to grab, well I get video but no audio...try to turn volume up and get "media does not support stremaing, player wil be started automatically after transferring completely"
try to play 720p mkv and it says no application

There are threads all over the general section on this issue. No application will play a high profile MKV on the Xoom. The native video player can play MKV files but it has to be baseline encoded. You will need to use an application like Handbrake to convert the HD video using the universal preset available on the application.
http://handbrake.fr
I haven't used it yet for Mkv but rockplayer is a great app I use to play avi files.
I've been using the full version of xvid4psp to recode x264 mkvs. Technically you can just copy the video and convert the audio to aac and push into a mp4 container, but my Xoom wasn't able to handle 1280x538 or whatever a 2.4AR movie is. I converted it to 1024x430 and was still laggy when playing with Act 1. It only takes my notebook about 2.5 hours to re-encode a movie that way so I'll probably stick with 848x352 or 848x480. Though I fear that might make it lag at full 16:9 480p so I might have to look at different profiles to make it less complex of an encode.

[Q] Tegra 2 Optimized MKV Player for Xoom?

OK, I've read every thread I can find on XDA on the subject, and it appears that the LG phones have a GPU-optimized video player, but otherwise there is nothing out there that really takes advantage of the Tegra 2 for playback of MKV files. Is that correct?
Most of my files are 720 or 1080 MKV with embedded subtitles. So far the best response I have gotten has been from QQplayer. I tried Moboplayer with the ARM7 codec it sends you to, but could never convince it to show the subtitles.
So what are YOU using to play such files (if anything)? Please also share your settings in case the problem is user error at my end
TIA!
I use PLEX to stream my 720p and 1080p mkv files.
If I need to stored the files on the xoom, i normally convert them to mp4 format using HandBrake.
i havent found a good mkv player for the xoom yet.. i am a VLC kinda guy on my PC and i havent found anything that compares to it...
I use xilisoft ultimate to convert to mp4 for native playback on the xoom
If you haven't bought Plex you have no idea what its like to play MKVs on your device
Plex provides better quality and performance than any other app.
I use Plex but the quality is not the same as if I play the same video (4GB 720p MKV) on the PC.
But one thing is sure, gets the job DONE.
My comments on plex WRT the ASUS transformer:

I have found that 3.1 actually does contain enough matroska container parsing (Probably due to WebM) to play any MKV files that would normally play when re-muxed to MP4 however the mimetype and file extension don't appear to be plumbed in. So as long as the audio is AAC or MP3, the video is h.264 and the bitrate/profile/resolution is ok to play then simply renaming the file to add on .mp4 (so the native video player doesn't object to the filename) then launching the video file from a file manager and just choosing "Video player" plays just fine.
Plex is a streamer, we need a local player that's better then Mobo or Rockplayer.
Plex is awesome, but it still won't the display .srt subtitles. I've tried RockPlayer, but it won't play everything.

I tried this in 3.01 and it didn't work but I'll give it a go on 3.1. If this works...!!
I started with rockplayer but then I moved to Vplayer.
Vplayer is awesome all the mkv files with subtitles that rockplayer couldn't handle, vplayer played it like a champ.
Plus i use remote potato to stream my stuff from my home PC and vplayer has been the only player to handle the task.
I still do Moboplayer it works for everything I need. When the MKV files I have don't show the subs I back out and long hold on the file and select Soft Decode which always kicks the subs in for me. Try that and see if it works for you.
Is my Xoom the only one that stutters when it's playing 720P movie on either MoboPlayer or RockPlayer?
I have not found any player that can play mkv file perfectly!
Yesterday, i tested with 1 mkv file, 720p, ac3 audio, size=1.5 Gb, both rockplayer and moboplayer could play that movie very smooth and showed subtitle correctly, but there was no sound!
When i switched to "software decode" mode, sound was fine, but video was very laggy!
Unfortunately none of the players allow mixed mode rendering, as hardware for the video is a go, but there is no hardware (or OS level) support for AC3 audio. Honestly, Android still has a ways to go as far as video codec and container support is concerned.
Just got a Xoom yesterday and have tried about 10 different players...
BS Player was the ONLY one that worked well.

+1 DicePlayer is awesome and it supports HW Acceleration
Nobody uses MX Video Player? Found it last year when I wanted to play some anime on my Evo 3D, worked like a charm, and has a separate plugin for device-specific support. Works flawlessly using software decoding, only played 480p videos so far though, supposedly works perfectly using hardware decoding on 720/1080 videos, somebody give it a shot and lemme know
I use Mx Video Player its got best interface and plays most videos and h/w support for 720p videos 1080 is pushing to the limits for Xoom.

All cast .avi video support from my android

I'm finding that I can't cast .avi files with Allcast. Will there's be any support? Mp4 files are tye only vireo types I see. Further more, I've tried a lot of other cast apps for .avi files on my android nexus 7 and they just give a black screen and broken audio. Anyone had any success? Do tell!
Thanks.

Most AVI files do not contain MPEG-4 video (AVI is a container like MKV and MOV), so they would require some kind of transcoding which is heavy for a mobile processor.
AVI is well known as a multimedia container format and still takes up a large proportion among the famous video formats just like MP4, MOV, and WMV today. Unfortunately, such a popular format is unsupported by Android Phones or Tablets so far. According to Android Official Website, only MP4, 3GP, MKV, WebM are the compatible formats with Android. Is it impossible to play AVI on Android? No, of course not. There is still a silver lining - convert AVI to Android supported formats for playback with Mod Edit: commercial software removed.
.avi hasn't historically hasnt been the go to format for high quality or HD sources with h.264 or h.265 encoding. Besides mp4, mkv supports this so look for this format to become the norm moving forward, .avi is a bit of a dying format.
Not casting from local media on the device, but Plex Media Server + Plex App handles transcoding and casting of my old collection of DivX and Xvid encoded .AVIs (hosted on the Media Server) with no issues. Still slowly running them through Handbrake to a Chromecast native format though.
Steaming AVI through Allcast
I am able to stream AVI file from Google Drive without a problem. Why not be able to do the exact same thing through Allcast?
avi does work with this encoding
I was messing with this yesterday, I couldnt get a film to cast, I tried solid explorer cast & all cast & video stream from my pc (last 1 loaded but was unwatchable). I dont have root on the chromecast. So I found 1 .avi film worked and 2 didnt. Upon inspection of encoding of the video and audio INSIDE the avi files, I found it only appears to support x264. Also framerate below 30, bitrate below 6000 makes it watchable (that might be because i have an older ovation tablet). As for audio I was using aac (any bitrate upto 256). Also I had it set on high quality video, which in anyvideoconverter means lower compression and larger file size. Once in that format, it would cast perfectly from any app, pc or mobile.
summery:
*.avi
x264 encoding
<6000 (and inc.) video bitrate
<30 fps
aac audio
<256 (and inc.) audio bitrate.
low compression
I have found a free app that lets me cast avi from my phone. Search play store for Megacast. It can bug sometimes, but in most of the cases does the job nicely.
