[Q] HELP wanted to install custom boot animation after doing SRE root - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone please help me out? I am wanting to install a custom boot animation. I downloaded one from this forum and renamed it to bootanimation.zip. I place on my memory card then used Root Explorer to move it to /system/media. I rebooted the phone but no animation comes up.

Galaxy S phones don't use bootanmation.zip they use a proprietary format QMG or something.

Thanks for the quick reply.

any luck??? I have been all over different forums trying to figure this out with zero luck....

negative.. Gunnyman stated it perfectly.. I researched for hours trying to figure out how to decode the QMG format into frames.. and met with no success.

I'm digging into QMG tonight. If there are mac tools for editing them I'll work on it.

please do, I would really like the boot animation from jh2 (not the S breaking into pieces and rebuilding, but the blue and purple shine that runs though it a couple of times.
super sexy imo.

I'm sure you could purchase the tools for several thousands of dollars from the proprietor, Quram Soft.
The price isn't even available on their web site, http://quramsoft.com/solution_e/qmage.asp
The name of the QMG format is Qmage, I've been unable to ascertain if our phones use Qmage or Qmage - F.
See Topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736412 for all the information that we have on boot animations, shut down animations, and sounds.

actually, you can do the bootanimation.zip, one of my co-workers was messing with it today... you probably need to set the permissions on the zip correctly.

The quintessential startup/shutdown sequence update.zip ...

I grew tired of doing this manually via the command line every time I re-flashed so I followed what others did and pieced this together. This takes cares of startup/shutdown audio and video. It basically eliminates anything that remotely resembles T-Mobile and gives that extra long shutdown sequence (60 frames). UPDATE: It works great with UVJI5. In fact, the new ROM is the reason why I created this and thus the only ROM I've tested it on. UPDATE: As expected, it works with UVJI6. You will just have to re-root. ROM Manager's automatic process was acting up so I had to go into its manual mode and choose the file myself.
You will need to flash this via ROM Manager.
Best,
DCC
UPDATE: Attached to post; VapidShare gave up on us prematurely.
UPDATE: I apologize for being a little vague, unintentionally ... this gives the phone the stock SGS I9000 startup/shutdown animations. There is another update out there that accomplishes the same thing but for whatever reason only offered 14 frames in the shutdown. This is the full 60 frames of the S breaking up into little pieces. It's the reverse of the startup, essentially.
Reserved by OP for future use
Totally joking of course ... I just always wanted to do that!
Works great, thanks! First time I have seen the shutdown longer than 14 frames. Hooray!
Does this work on the new firmware?

Great question ... I forgot to mention in my original post: this update works great with UVJI5 ... in fact, it's what led me to create it. Jacking around with Kies for an hour in vain left me with no energy to deal with extricating my phone from those horrid T-mobile startup/shutdown sounds and graphics.
Do you have a mirror rapidshare keeps giving me an error message

This looks like the same one I already had I want to one with the extended shutdown animation like the OP had posted
IDK the one i posted replaces tmobile with the original galaxy s boot/shutdown
removed link
Sorry guys, I am at work and my client's firewall does not let me through to rapidshare ... if I can find a few minutes of downtime, I will seek alternatives. I can't even download the file to attach it to a post in this forum (it's almost 8MB, BTW; I don't know if I'm even allowed to). I will see if it's at least still on my phone.
Yes, this removes the T-Mobile start-up shutdown animations (audio and video) with the stock SGS I9000 ones but it has the extended version of the shutdown. As I originally mentioned, I pieced it together from others' updates.
UPDATE: I attached the file to the original post! My apologies to all who were inconvenienced by the RapidShare link.
NP no rush here.

Thanks, much appreciated
Installed through Rom Manager with no issues.
Very nice. Thank you very much.
the reason the original only had 14 frames is because the original shutdown would only play 14 frames and stop.
Does this work on the stock roms and some of Eugenes.
I haven't ventured out into the JI5 stuff simply because I'm waiting for all the smoke to clear.
got it working

It should work just fine with any ROM. It is a very simple script. It just removes the existing PowerOn and Shutdown sounds and replaces the two bootsamsung QMG files and overwrites the shutdown animation folder. In the worst case, it would just do nothing.
Folks, feel free to download it and see the constituent files. There is an update-script in the META-INF/com/google/.... directory.
Good luck,
DCC

Click "Install ROM from SD Card", then choose this file (GalaxySBoot.zip or whatever), don't choose any "Pre-installation" options, and just click OK. Since it's not named update.zip, it shouldn't conflict with ROM Manager's "process" (for some people, ROM Manager needs to lay down its update.zip in order to ensure that when booting into the stock recovery it is able to load itself via said file).
I hope this helped.

Try this Custom Boot animation

Here is a custom boot animation I put together of the Galaxy S boot up screen without the verizon logo/bootup. Load it on your phone and tell me what you think.
So basically you just removed the VZW portion of the boot animation. Wouldnt deleting that file sorta do the same thing.
Try it and see, Verizon stuff is deleted and galaxy S looped a couple of times.
Yea I opened and played it on my pc. But like I said, same boot animation but without the VZW crap. Nice job though.
Just curious, how do you play it on a computer?
For me, I just open the part0 file, ctrl a, right click and select open. Windows pic viewer will open them all in order and it looks like it does on the phone, with a bit more lag of course.

A lot of ROMs remove the bootup sound because a lot of us find it annoying. You can use any sound you want, as long as you can make it a wav file. Name it PowerOn.wav and place it the /system/etc folder

[Q] Flashing Boot Animation

Hey heres the rundown.
Captivate running Andromeda3 with the Ursa Minor kernel. I just downloaded the new Nexus Prime boot animation from the link below. Flashed it through CWM but now when I boot it just plays the Andromeda boot animation. Am I missing out on something here?
Link to the BA: http://www.droid-life.com/2011/10/08/download-nexus-prime-boot-animation/
It installed it to the wrong directory.
That script flashed it to /data/local
For our phones bootanimation.zip is installed to /system/media.
Use a root file explorer and paste it in the aforementioned location.

Cool. Thanks for the help. But one more thing, how did you know that? Im asking so in the future I can troubleshoot little problems like this on my own.
The link you gave says where it installs to right in the paragraph...
I know where boot animations go, and that wasn't it.
I mean this in the nicest possible way but please read everything you're about to flash BEFORE you flash it or you could very possibly brick your phone.

The boot animation from the Nexus Prime aka Galaxy Nexus that was teased to us earlier in the week is now available for everyone to play with. The instructions we have are for flashing in Clockwork Recovery, but if you aren’t rooted, you will have to do it the old fashioned way by extracting and moving the bootanimation.zip into /data/local or wherever your particular phone pulls media from.

I read it, I just didnt know that our phones pull media from another folder. Also the way it is worded kind of confused me. I appreciate the warning though. Been on here a little over six months now and havent managed to brick yet because I typically do more reading than posting. Thanks for the help.

System Media Folder

Hi can some one please post the System/Media/ folder. I've been trying to resolve an issue i have with the boot animation and i was wondering if just replacing the whole folder would fix it.

Im trying to fix the issue i had here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/help/boot-animation-trouble-experience-t3036965
I tried changing roms to Firekat for about 3 days and during that time i got the old boot animation back. But when i switched back to my old recovery i lost it again.
It seems when I installed "CWM_CustomBootanimation_44_Enable.zip" as stated in the link, i lost the ability to boot up to a ".qmg" or a "bootanimation.zip"
Ive tried both.
Flashable zip?...
Hey man
I don't think you still have this problem...
But this zip that you are saying to us, is a flashable one...
You should try to flash it with a custom recovery
Sorry for my english if it's bad
Note 4 - System/Media
Yeah, so can someone please post that now? Put up a couple screenshots & or a detailed list. I used the S Boot Animations App to download & install new bootanimation for my Note 4. The one I liked was corrupted so I settled for another & it worked fine. Then I tried making the corrupted one work by downloading the GIF & renaming it a qmg, but it didn't work & now when it boots it only loads the Galaxy Note 4 still frame for the whole duration. I put the boot file I didn't like as much back up & it does the same thing. It's as if, even though I only replaced one file with an identical file, that I accidentally erased something else important & against caution I did not make a backup before doing any of this, because it sounded too hard to mess up, but here I did it... So it would be great to see what comes stock with every Note 4 in this file address: System/Media
I can only imagine how many people came to this link hoping it would be here so for me & all future idiots just like me 'if you got'em light'em up!'

Shutdown Animation

Does anyone have the stock shutdown animation in a flashable zip? I want to get rid of the carrier shutdown animation on my Note5. It's driving me insane. I was able to flash the stock Marshmallow boot animation and that works so I imagine the shutdown animation from any Note5 variant works well on my SM-9208. Thanks!
Check this themes and apps thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/themes-apps/mod-enable-zip-bootanimation-aroma-boot-t3205323
He has multiple boot and shutdown animations all preloaded. Not sure if it has the stock one you're looking for but it has a bunch to choose from. Check it out.

Thank you. I saw that after I started the post but wasn't certain whether the Sammy animation in his preview was the official one that comes with the non-carrier versions. Do you know if it is?
Update: I tried it. Doesn't work. Oh well. I guess I'll have to root around a bit more.

What didn't work? I had it up and running on my phone. I deleted the file after I chose my animations (Marshmallow boot, CRT Shutdown), so I can't go and check if they had the Samsung shutdown animation.
It should work though, so long as you're rooted.

I'm rooted. I still have my carrier boot animation on shutdown. It might be a quirk of my carrier's ROM. I understand it doesn't work on some other carrier-branded ROMs too.

why would you need a flashable zip if you are rooted? Just delete shutdown.qmg or whatever that file is called, and replace it with the shutdown animation you want.
Maybe your carrier has a different name for the animation file, but the process should still be the same - just rename the shutdown animation file to match whatever the original one was called.

I have 6 files -- bootsamsung.qmg, bootsamsungloop.qmg, bootsamsungmini.qmg, bootsamsungmini2.qmg, bootsamsungmini2loop.qmg and bootsamsungminiloop.qmg.
I also have crypt_bootsamsung.qmg and crypt_bootsamsungloop.qmg.
I'm not certain which of those is the one I should be renaming. That's why I wanted the zip. I wanted to take it apart to see which one it is so I don't accidentally do something to my device that I'll regret.
Also, I don't actually have the animation from the non-carrier SM-9208 so I don't have anything to replace the QMG file with.
EDIT: I found it!! It wasn't any of those. My carrier hid it in another folder. Just renamed it and now it's gone. Thank goodness. Their stuff was garbage.

I am having a hard time changing start up and shut down. Would one of you be willing to walk me through it?
Update: successfully installed both. Sorry for the 20 questions. Where do i put the sound files for the boot and shut down animations? Thank you in advance, and thank you for your hard work developing this.
