Mono sound on video HD recording, why? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know why but any video I make with my i9000 has an ac2 mono sound. No matter what resolution I pick for the video. Isn't there a workaround for this? To make it at least stereo if not better?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

The phone does not have 2 microphones in the first place. Hence recorded audio is mono.
Video resolution should not be affecting its audio.

Ok but before sgs I owned an iphone and guess what it recorded video with stereo and only one mic. It is software related. Must be...

But do you hear difference in the left and right channel?
If it doesn't, SGS encodes it in a more bandwdth efficient manner.

Then it wasn't stereo. It may have been twin mono. But, as said, why waste space recording twin mono.

As far as I know stereo sounds better as mono, that's why I prefer the more non efficient way of encoding. And let's not talk about having a very good quality video stream beside a poor audio one.
It's like being married to miss univers and not having the posibility to see her (you know how) cuz your blind...

As far as I know stereo means absolutely nothing if the device doesn't have the hardware to capture in stereo. Mono does not necessarily indicate inferior quality. Your iPhone has recorded in mono but just replicated the channels to appear as stereo. Samsung Galaxy S rather honestly reported mono and let the playback device (eg. computer) replicate the channels whenever necessary. The audio quality boils down to the bit rate and sampling rate used; and these should be considered in development of improving SGS's audio recording quality.

the SGS has no option to select the recording level, and bandwidth/bit rate to begin with
so you get what you get.
we are waiting for an App or a Hack to allow uses to change the recording bit rate so it can get better sound

True, so the development has to focus on hacking the bit rate and sampling rate, rather than producing fake stereo.

True but you gotta admit, the video is in hd for christ sake and the sound is not even close to the quality of video...c'mon. A bigger bitrate would be helpfull, at least AC3.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

that is what every one is complaining about, including myself
we need an App to control which recording sound frecuency we want to use instead of whatever it's the default, which sounds like something on the 11Hz or 22 Hz at best guestimate

Which rom has the best sound for you?

I mean for both music Via External Speaker and Via Headphones.
Some roms i think have a Very low Speaker Output, we got one of the few smartphones with real stereo speakers and they have incredible well.... Low Volume
I think CM10.1 has very good sound, you have DSP Manager, which is a equalizer app for CM. You can either choose presets or do it yourself. You also have a bass and treble booster.
If you have decent headphones or earphones, you can really experience it.
Hope this answers your question

Temasek's CM7+vadonka's eTana kernel sounds best.
As supercurio said before,cm10/4.04official has changed the audio sampling rate to 48kHz which leads to poor SRC and poor audio quality which is important to me as daily players.I remember that Vadonka once could change his sample rate of his CM7 kernel, but the dev seem haven't found the way to change the sampling rate on CM10/4.04.Glad that someone raised the question as the sound quality is the only thing stopping me from using ics.
It would be great if someone is going to fix it.
Also, supercurio has seemingly lost his interest in continuing voodoo for 2x either for new Kaudio driver or support of ics.Can it be ported to a flashable zip?Big Thanks for it.
I use the 2x as my daily music driver with TF10.
With any rom that suports voodoo sound...
supercurio seems that is not going to bring us their implementation of Voodoo in CM10 and above : (
we never really even had voodoo sound, in our version only the amplifier controll worked, which is more like voodoo loud..
sad panda

O2x has only 1 main speaker out n that's called mono.
I wouldn't mind that if it wasn't so weak and distorted at high (cough)
volumes.
FWIW mind you no software tweak can do any major difference to a small speaker like
this phone has. Of course nothing stops you to use an external sound system, that's
were software can do magick in the limits of course of the D/A conv. the O2x has to
offer, which is not that bad actually.
You can use the hdmi to bypass the D/A converter or even bluetooth anytime of the day though...
what you talking about there is 2 speakers, and the hp jack 3.5mm is stereo also

If you kindly tilt your phone. - i suggest you got a lg p 990 not su 660. - there will magically appear 2 - in words two - speakers to the left and right of your micro USB jack... further no need to say that the tech specs if you check them online clearly say "stereo speakers"
For further notice size doesn't matter.
But it shows that you have clearly no idea about actual audio technic and still think a speaker must be"this big" to do a good sound work.
That don't need BTW that I think this speakers are spectacular or something. But I think they got more potential...

I don't think so. As i know, p990 has just one speaker, another one is just micro (which looks like second speaker).
About sound quality. I use dual boot with old boot just for voodoo sound. 1 rom is wiui with etana kernel which supports voodoo. I am using this rom only for music and second pa build4. We have a lot cm 10, 10.1 for old boot and i think it's enough for those people who really needs them and voodoo.

Size in speakers is very crucial as it defines the lowest frequency it can reproduce.
I don't want to get more technical about it but the bigger the speaker is, the lowest can get frequency wise.
As for all the other stuff I stand to my previous post.
If you don't mind, being cocksure about stuff is ridiculous in my book.
The speakers (ear speaker + main speaker)in p990 is low quality, the audio output has nothing to do with the speaker if this is ok with you that is.
Good luck.
but saying its mono is just wrong
Why? It's not stereo and it sums to mono...
How do you call that? Anyway...

yes your right, it very well could be summed mono, however. there is 2 speakers right? so its still stereo. L (L+R) R (R+L) or whatever phase

So this is realy akward that a phone life MOTO Defy has so much better and louder audio quallity in phone speaker and headphone sound.
I´m a real adiophile and i suggesting to get another phone just because the poor audio quality :crying:

App for good live music recordings?

The htc voice recorder app distorts with live band sound levels. The video camera records beautiful clear undistorted audio of the same band. It seems htc didn't put the same brains into the voice recorder app... It'd be nice not to have to waste storage on video just to get good live music audio recordings. Anybody know how to fix this? There don't seem to be any gain settings in the app...
You could always record the video, go home and extract the audio with a PC application then delete the video.

thanks for the suggestion, i did end up using the video app to record, then found an app called "Android Audio Editor" that could actually transcode mp3 audio from the mp4 video right on the phone. It's a 3 day trial of the app, but it did a nice job. Here's a sloppy rehearsal of a live recording in a small room with live drums. Pretty impressive for a phone!

There's an update being released for audio and camera.
For sounding like garbage, that mp3 you posted sounds pretty damn good. If that makes since.
I tried to record Joe Walsh on my 3d evo at the Rose Garden ( Portland Oregon). It sounds really bad...Distortin' Mortin.

thanks! i'm very happy with the camera video and audio quality now, i'm blown away by how good it sounds and looks! it's great that HTC wen't above and beyond to create such an amazing multimedia experience with this device...
didn't mean to confuse my question... the mp3 i posted was the audio extracted from a video camera recording, not the bad one from the voice recorder app... for comparison, here's the bad distorted audio from the voice recorder app https://www.dropbox.com/s/d8nksirjxneivkg/Voice0002.aac )
I've gotten some decent "live" recordings using the earbud mic filter. Just plug in the beats earbuds and record with the system app.

Interesting, I haven't tried that, I assumed that was a mono Mic. (Maybe better for covert bootlegs?)
I'm really excited about the great stereo dual membrane mics on the One, they sound impressive for music taken from video, we just need to find an audio only app that can take advantage of the great mics correctly.
Irig seems to be decent. If you register you can optimize the audio some.

[Q] Poor streaming Bluetooth audio sound quality?

I'm having some issues w the BT Streaming audio quality - sounds a bit fragmented and tinny on some of the higher (brighter) sounds when playing music. I had the same problem on my Evo 3D, but it went away w/ the Evo LTE, and now its back w/ the HTC One.
Anyone else having issues?

In general, blue tooth sucks for audio. It can't quite transfer data fast enough. There have been improvements over the years but it's a hardware limitation too.
I'm not sure how much better it sounded on the LTE, but it sounds just fine for me with beats on. Sometimes beats stops working, or so it sounds, and it sounds crappier.

Ok thx....I was turning the Beats off b/c there was too much bass.

Is it a problem with all sources? (MP3's, Spotify, Pandora?) Spotify and Pandora will, by default, set to lower quality streams and downloads which result in compression noise, most notably in higher and lower frequencies.
While BT audio isn't the best for audio, it's not all that bad. I've been using BT audio on my high-end car-fi and it sounds fantastic! Just as good as my iPhone sounded directly wired to USB. But, I need to turn off BeatsAudio to get any real sound quality. Beats is a glorified 'loudness' control and it destroys music on good systems. It does, however, make the HTC One speakers sound surprisingly amazing, esp for spoken word like podcasts and audiobooks.

So, lower bitrate mp3s (128kbps) will have more noise on lower and higher frequencies?

Audio Recording Tips

I chose this phone over the S4 based on the advertised higher quality audio capabilities. The speakers do sound great, but does anyone have any pointers on how to maximize the audio recording quality? I see a lot of articles regarding video, but not much for people trying to only record audio. Do some apps work better than others? Phone/mic placement? Do I have to record a video to get the best audio?
The thing is, I was playing (live music) with some friends several months ago, and one of them put their iphone4 on the opposite end of the room and ran the voice memo app. i was amazed at how clear it was compared to my S2. So far im not having the same experience with the HTC One.
Thanks in advance.
I haven't tried much yet but sounds like the video recorder is best for audio recording.

How is the sound recording quality?

Hello guys!
I want to buy this phone but the sound recording quality is importante for me. I´ll record meetings and, sometimes, from about 3 or 4 meters...
Can anyone say if the sound recording quality is good? My question is becuase it is waterproof... maybe it will make the recording quality below average?
Thanks!

It really depends.
I've seen some people say that it was bad (according to their opinion)
But I've also seen that said there was nothing wrong with it.
The Z3C has 3 recording settings (in terms of sound)
Silent, normal, concert (something like that) so I guess you'll have to play around with those to see which fits the occasion best.
Here are 2 random videos I found, And in my opinion the sound isn't bad. Based on my own experience it's not bad either, but I'm not you, you need to judge it by yourself.
I'd say go to a store if possible and just record some stuff. (Please note that the Z3C doesn't come with a build in sound recorder app so you'll need to get one from Play)

My experience so far is based on two scenarios.. Concert and alarm test messages. Both are absolutely great in quality! Using sonys audio recorder to even record stereo audio.

I have not done extensive testing regarding sound, yet, but from what I have done I am impressed with the default sound. It has a wide sound stage, but very clear. However, I have recently purchased Sony's STM10U Stereo Microphone which works on the Z3 devices. There is also Sony's audio recorder app that works with this mic to download.
It really adds a studio type control, blocking out all external sounds, providing a more focused sound. Great for concerts. Comes with a wind cover which is handy for blustery days. This way, I have all my sound options covered.

If you record regularly I'd suggest investing in a decent mini microphone that plugs into the headphone jack. I find the built in mic no better or worse than other phones I've had, but have not done any detailed comparison.
I have found the sound quality absolutely perfect with the Z3C!!!
I play in a band and have always been jealous of how well my friends iPhones have been able to record our band practices. My z3 compact is loads, loads better than my galaxy nexus or HTC hd2 but still not as even good as the iPhone 4 I'm afraid when it comes to recording at very loud volumes.
I'm also using the Sony audio recorder. It works well but the files are massive and can only be saved on internal memory.
