Unrevoked & Wireless tethering Help - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried doing a search, but couldn't get the answers I needed.
I was trying to do a quick install of Unrevoked on a (believe or not) Sprint employee's Hero. My girlfriend and I went to upgrade her Palm Pre to an Epic 4G. We got to talking and I showed him my hacked Evo with all the bells and whistles via "Fresh." All he was concerned about was getting was Swype and Tethering. Since I didnt really know the guy, I told him that I would bring in my laptop and hook him in the store with unrevoked rather than doing a full fledged root.
Well to make a short story long...
I downloaded unrevoked and what I thought to be the correct tethering app apk. He is running 2.1, and I believe its was update 1. When I ran unrevoked it said that it was rooted sucessfully, but when I tried running the tethering app it says that the phone requieres root. Leading me to believe that it didnt install correctly.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Even point me to a link or two. What should have been a simple task kept me at the store for about 45minutes trying to troubleshoot. Thanks...

Well that probably means their phone is at build number 2.27.651.6. When I ran unrevoked with that build number it said it was rooted but, it wasn't. Load the .5 RUU and then you can do the unrevoked.

Activation issues (running cyanogen).

First of all, a hello, and thank you, to this forum. You guys have a ton of great content, and I'd be completely sunk without this site.
Anway, here's my issue.
1) My friend had a G1, it worked great, activated on his t-mobile data plan.
2) He gave it to me, but first, he did a factory reset on it. This was unfortunate, as it was on cupcake, with RC33, and I, and everybody I know, lack a data plan.
3) I downgraded to the old android, and RC29, so I could WiFi activate.
4) I activated it successfully via WiFi, but it quickly developed a tendancy to randomly shut down, all the time, unless it was on a charger.
5) Figuring this was somehow caused by the downgrade, I decided to root, and update to a later version.
6) I settled on Cyanogen, and installed it.
7) Now, I'm stuck back at the "touch the android to begin" screen, and in my original dilemma. The <enter>reboot</enter> command doesn't work, now, as it did on RC29. This confuses me. Why is cyanogen, an OS all about customizing, not allowing me to activate via wifi, or have that good old hidden terminal? How do I activate via wifi, on cyanogen?
If you are running Cyanogen, just touch the android and skip the activation procces...all custom roms have that option.
If you dont get that option, then you are not running Cyanogen. As simple as that.
Hey, thanks. Yeah, I just sort of gave up hope when I saw the "touch the android" thing, and couldn't use the old RC29 method.
Sure, enough, it was there, I got wifi on, and am now activated.

My happiness is short lived.
I thought cyanogen would fix it, but my phone just started with the random shutdowns again.
It was first triggered when I updated, and attempted to run google maps.
I'm not sure if this is a coincidence, or if reinstalling cyanogen, and avoiding google maps like a plague, might stop thi form happening.
Any insights?
help
how can I activate it later after using the skip method?
I can connect to a wifi spot in school. then what? If I open the market app, It would promt me to register an account, But I always get errors even If I'm already connected to wifi.

Wifi tether help w/ 2.1

Hey everyone,
I'm pretty new to the forums so please bear with me if I'm posting in the wrong spot or totally missed a similar thread.
I just recently decided to go ahead and root my phone after the 2.1 update and before that "security patch" closed the hole. So I successfully rooted my HTC (sprint) hero w/ regaw_leinad's post (awesome help thanks btw).
Everything seems to be running great, but one of the main reasons I attempted to go ahead and root my phone was to use some 3rd party apps, most notably the WIFI Tether app.
It installed correctly and everything looks like great except for it doesn't actually seem to connect to anything. I can see the connection just fine on several laptops and even my ipad sees it. I can connect to it, and I can ping the gateway just fine, but when attempting to actually surf the web, grab email, etc it just doesn't work (shows page cannot be displayed).
I've been following a couple of threads that indicate that the something is just simply wrong with the stock 2.1 HTC ROM that prevents it, and you need to change to a custom ROM to get it to work (I think some people are using the MoDaCo (sp??)).
So I'm definitely not opposed to flashing the ROM. Would you agree that is the issue and if so, what ROM should I flash to?
Thanks in advance!
i have the same problem with the stock rom, rooted
i use wifi tether 1.6
http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...il?name=wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk&can=2&q=
works fine for me on 2.1
Mine connects but without net. I just start up the tether then disable mobile net on the phone then enable it back then works like a charm

Basically, this is a long ass list of different things, but take a look at the bottom post:
Start Wireless Tether
Hold down the red Hang Up button
Tap the last option "Mobile Network to disable my network
Again hold down the red Hang Up button and re-enable my "Mobile Network"
Just confirmed it works - can connect my ipad, mac, pc laptop to it. I'm using a stock 2.1 android that's just been freshly rooted. Spread the word if anyone is having the same trouble.
ah Sim beat me to it
are you using an app off the market or the one on http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether, if so, which version worked for you?
Lol yeah i figured it out yesterday by accident trying to get my laptop going

lol thats slow as he11, must have poor reception usually i can get 1.5 up and .5 down with a 150-300ms ping with good reception.
I had the same problem with the version from the market. I went to the developer's website and there were some newer alternate versions of that app. I installed the one from May 25th (I think) and it works like a charm.
I used the one click root on unrevoked.com to root my Hero
The market version has never worked for me. It actually even says in the notes for the market version there's a new version for the Hero and Legend on the site. That being said, the only one that works for me without disconnecting/reconnecting over and over is 1.60.
"Unable to star tethering. Please try again!"
my hero is definitely rooted i used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 awhile ago. I downloaded tether app from google code as posted earlier, but every time i click the green tether it stays start tethering then goes to "Unable to star tethering. Please try again!"
I also tried the hang up button trick as mentioned.
Thanks for your help.
ps. I haven't changed any settings am i supposed to in the Wireless Tether for Root Users? Also is there a specific way to install? I just downloaded by emailing my self url and installing from the device.

[Q] Downgrade or Root 2.27.651.6

I was selling my phone and i decided to give it the latest update from sprint now its restarting randomly every time. Is anyone know how to fix this restarting problem or can anyone help me root it or downgrade it to something else PLEASE??
2.27.651.6 is the software that the phone as now
Throw DarchDroid on it.
Use this. It is the original unpatched 2.27.651.5 RUU upgrade utility. It can be used to downgrade.
Credits go to Regaw for his link.

I know for sure it works because I've used it to downgrade it a lot. Once you do, if you'd like to root, follow Regaw's Guide (Link)

Back to 1.5 please?
Sorry, noob here. Will this let me downgrade my phone back to 1.5? 2.1 sucks big time, and I just want my old phone back.
Thanks for the help.

I'm afraid not. That RUU I posted is specifically for the 2.1 release with the rooting exploit possibility.
Before dumping 2.1, I urge you to give a custom rom a try. It really makes a world of difference,

Thanks...can you recommend a "basic" version? I would just like a clean fast-running OS. No bells and whistles.
I originally wanted BT to work with my pdanet, but can live without that.
I also tried running a hack to get the wireless to see ad hoc networks, but it didn't work either. It too would be nice, but having a phone that doesn't crash would be nicer.
The change of the Maps annoys me the most. The old system used a call-in voice recognition system that worked. The new OS uses "on-board" voice recognition that is the worst I have EVER seen. It can't get ANY words right.
So, you're trying to drive and yelling at the phone for not getting the address correctly, and the type-in option keeps changing screens, closing the keyboard, etc. It's so absolutely useless, I'm shocked any idiot ever decided it was good enough to get though beta.
Thanks,
Greg

LOL...I'm not smart enough to know any better.
I guess I am...it seems to work well with the phone. Do I get that running without it makes the phone look more "basic".
I'm not sure what I'd lose without it.

Well, it is certainly subjective, but yes, a non-Sense (ha!) Rom does look much more basic. My advice is to try RegawMOD, (the non-themed version) its incredibly fast, and comes with Sense.
By the way, you may be confusing the Maps app with the Navigation app (they are two different apps). The navigation app still does voice recognition.

Thanks, I'll try it out.
Yes, I meant Navigation. The voice recognition on the new Navigation doesn't work at all. Zero zilch nada. It can't recognize the simplest words. "San Jose" becomes "Ben Lomond" or some random city on the other side of the country (it has no geographical sense).
The older system (tied to 1.5, I guess?) had a call-in system that analyzed the voice print offline, on a big computer I guess, and sent the link to your phone. It seemed to work nearly every time.
There's a Stock 2.1 ROM out there if you really want to keep it basic. Just look in the Development section.

No, that's my problem. 2.1 sucks ass. Nothing works as well as 1.5 did, and definitely nothing works better.
Great...
Thought I had DC 2.09 installed clean...until it started to lag, so I rebooted. Now I'm stuck at work without a phone that works, since it's stuck in a bootloop.
F this...Sprint sent me a new phone. After I confirm it's 1.5, this 2.1-infected POS goes back.

It won't bootloop unless you enabled JIT. And since it's in a bootloop, just pull the battery lol.
Oh, and there are probably no 1.5 Hero's at Sprint anymore. They're most likely ALL 2.1
Hi, guys. I need help but I don't want to start an entirely new thread so I'll add it here.
I just got a new Sprint HTC Hero and it comes preloaded with 2.27.651.6, and I'm trying to downgrade to 2.27.651.5 but when I open RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release.exe it opens with a loading bar, the bar completes, and then the installer closes. But there's still an instance of it in Task Manager.
I've been struggling with this for days, if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.
Edit: I'm on Windows XP SP3, my anti-virus and firewall are disabled, and my phone is connected to HTC Sync. I've also tried in Safe Mode.
2.27.651.6 fix issues
hey i just went and got a new cdma hero from sprint because my old on had hardware issues... well i looked and low and behold software build 2.27.651.6... so I get the RUU installer and it keeps giving me an error... i get the progress bar then the verifying info on your phone. then I get error message (170) connection error... its saying my phone isn't connected so i do the fastboot method and still nothing can anyone tell me what im doing wrong?
I'm no expert, but I think I read that if you run the ruu twice, back to back, it will work. I believe it's in regaw's thread somewhere .
For the connection error, do you have the latest htc sync? It has updated drivers.

I tried it several time and im pretty sure I have the new sync. I currently don't have a working computer so i can't try at command I have to borrow a computer and try it but I did try several times and kept getting the connection error.
I'd you are on the .6 build there is a new root tool available. You should be able to do a search for the thread. I'll look for here in a sec.
Edit:
I can't figure out how to post a link from the mobile app but the thread is in the dev section posted by Zenulator.

What can I do with my old G1?

So I've got a G1 that was on T-Mobile but I've been with Sprint since October. What can I do with it besides sell it?
Can I activate it without a cell plan/sim card if I upgrade the ROM? It was rooted way back when, but it's running an old version of 1.5.
If I managed to activate it on a 2.1 or 2.2 ROM, would I be able to download apps from the market? I'm wondering if I could just use the phone on WiFi around the house, maybe use it as a remote Google Talk device or something.
Other ideas are much appreciated!

check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316 worked for me
and then maybe a little http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684101
and just for good measure http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
steps root, update spl recovery and radio (in proper order) , and flash some roms.
Cool, so I can do all the above then! Man, activating a phone without a SIM is a pain! I'm surprised there isn't an easier way built into a ROM. I also hope it still works since it's almost a year an a half since the method was last updated! Thanks for the links, much appreciated!
Don't worry, most roms can skip the google sign in process without much hastle. A few days ago I found an article that says that you can skip the google sign in by pushing the 4 corners of the "press the android to continue" screen. Push them in this order:
12
43
I can link you to a video of this if my instructions aren't clear. I haven't tried it on every rom but I know for sure CM6 let's you do that

what would be considered the 1,2,3, and 4th corner. If you could send something over to me i would appreciate it. I would like to turn this into a little gameboy type thing for my daughter.

Return to Stock? Backup available before Root?

I'd definitely like to root my Bionic so that I can debloat and get Titanium up and running.
Question is, is there a way to back out and return the phone to stock? Is there a function similar to "Nand Backup" that can be used prior to attempting the 1-step method?
It looks like the 1-step process is "idiot proof", but after many ROM load ups on my Eris, I know that there is no such thing and a Nand backup has saved me a few times.
Additionally, as with all new phones I'm expecting an update or two to fix any initial problems. I would assume that you will need to be back to stock to get them ... Of course there is that chance that any update will trash the root ability.
I would also like to know if anyone has attempted getting the phone back-to-stock. I thought I read somewhere that Pete's tool will undo the rooting as well, and it's reasonable to assume that if it has both functions, and it successfully rooted the phone, it can un-root it too. But all the same, it'd be nice to know if it has been done successfully ahead of time.
Classic example of not having "a way back" leaving your nice, new, shiny Bionic possibly hamstrung (MyDroidWorld Forums):
Default Bionic NFL Mobile Force Close...
So I got my bionic today (its sweet!) - I rooted the second I got it home, ran the remove bloatware script... I'm not sure if NFL mobile was installed before I ran it or not, but it was not installed after the fact. I went to the market and installed it - Force Close immediately, every time I try to run it. I even rebooted and got the same problem.
Is this a problem with NFL mobile / Droid / or did I break something?
Exactly! Though I personally WANT the NFL app gone, I want to make sure the script doesn't do anything I don't want it to first, as well as make sure it can be undone.
PS: I just got my Bionic, and it IS sweet!
