[Q] Froyo to Froyo update [NOOB] - Droid X Android Development

Hi,
Complete noob here!!
So I had rooted 2.1 stock and update to Froyo leak first one it came out I believe (System Version 2.3.9.MB810), and lost root.
I would like to upgrade to the new 2.3.13 Froyo, but I'm not sure if I could just follow the instructions on the threads because they are about going from 2.1 rooted to new Froyo.
Is there a difference in the installation? Can I recover root? Do I loose everything I have? I have Titanium root but since I lost root it hasn't been backing up I believe
I been looking at both of these threads lately, sound like the instructions might work (again complete noob , so not sure)
thread: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764304
thread: androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/174152-brand-new-froyo-2-3-13-a.html
Thanks for your help in advance.
Update
I used the instructions on the thread on here and ran into an error when running the update zip
Says Error: Status 2
What can I do?

Neither will work without root... follow D2 root instructions.

So follow the instructions on this thread
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7838000&postcount=1
And then just follow the instructions as they are on the new froyo threads
Thanks!!!

Yes, that should work. Wait for someone else to confirm this though, unless you are adventurous.
rage-against-the-cage is a 2.2 exploit, the way I understand. It isn't specific to the D2, but as I said, wait on someone to confirm. I don't know a whole lot about this. More of a lurker than a do-er.

I saw it a while ago and thought about doing it, I was waiting for another 1-click-root type of thing, so I couldn't mess up. I'll wait and see if someone confirms it then.

I used this method to regain root after the 2.3.13 update and it worked. If you know how to use adb its pretty easy.

Hi I don't really. But I ran into a problem my computer wont recognize my phone in pc mode. I installed and uninstall the drivers and nothing. So I can't do anything!!
Any ideas?

Try and find a guide somewhere? I know there are guides to setting up the sdk.

None of my computers (Mac/Windows 7) would recognize my Droid on PC mode. What can I do??
Thanks

Try turning usb debugging off (System settings > Applications > Development).
And then connect in PC mode again and see if the phone installs itself.

Try the other modes, mine work in mass storage.

[Q] I upgraded to FRG83D BIG MISTAKE. Want to get back FRG83

I update to FRG83D and I guess i lost root. I attempted to restore flash clock world mod again but .nothing happens when i confirm I tried to do a backup from Titanium backup and of course it says i'm not rooted. Then I tried to go into Superuser app and it asked me to update. I attempted to and I got an error the su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sdcard, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary.
Sorry for the long winded explanation, but i'm totally frustrated. I've been trying to fix this for 2hrs. Oh yeah I originally got root using universal androot and it still says im rooted. I clicked unroot but it doesn't work. I'm confused cuz androot says i'm rooted, but Superuser and Titanium backup says i'm not.

Thank you danger-rat. I'm back to stock frg83. It only took about 10mins. Now I'm trying figure out how to get back to root. None of the one click methods seem to be working. Superoneclick, z4root, androot. Once again Thank YOU
Super one click works for frg83 and frg83d. You will need a computer. I got it from the unlockr. It has step by step instructions. It was easy and works perfectly.

Is it the case for a Nexus One replacement unit that has never been rooted or altered in any way? I got it with FRG83 and installed FRG83D as soon as I received it. I tried SOC method but it was stuck on 'waiting for device' message. Not sure if it is because of an old XP machine or HTC Evo cable I was using.
Upgrade the SuperOneClick and the Nexus One drivers to their latest versions. It DOES work. The least it does is presenting you with a root shell in ADB - which is enough to root manually.

I tried both SOC 1.5.1 and 1.5.5 with .net 2.0.5x in the XP machine. I just used the files included in the zip, isn't it that it has latest Nexus One drivers too? Sorry, I am a Mac,Linux guy and not much experience with ADB stuff on Windows.
It might not be the latest drivers, since the latest SOC (I don't remember, I believe it was 1.5.5) finished the rooting procedure correctly on FRG83D, tested several days ago, less than a week. The latest drivers are in the SDK, they need to be installed and the phone has to have "USB Debugging" enabled.

Thank you! I guess I have no other option but to install Windows on my Mac. I was feeling lucky and I thought Linux or Mac can use SOC but it is proving difficult and I haven;t come across a single reply who stated success on Linux/Mac!
Uh, why SOC? Use any of the others you just run directly on the phone..

They don't exist for FRG83D just yet and I am not sure if we can downgrade to FRF91 or some other firmware without unlocking bootloader.
You can install Windows in any type of VM, as long as you can forward the USB to it. I can use my Nexus in Linux under VirtualBox, after I forward the USB device to VirtualBox.

when it hangs at waiting for device, unplug usb and then plug it back in and it should find your device.

With all the time wasted searching for other methods, you would have had root on your device already if you just did it manually. It is so simple, takes like 20 mins, and it doesn't require a Windows PC.
I really don't understand why people search for so long for a "1-click" when doing it manually doesn't take that much more effort.
Rooting so is simple with the binaries available:
1) Put rageagainstthecage on your device, change permissions to allow it to run, run it, and presto, it gives you a root shell.
2) Now that you have a root shell, all you have to do is put su in the /system/bin directory, change the permissions so that it can run, and presto, you have root.
And given that rageagainstthecage exploits a vulnerability in the way adb works, this method will work for all devices without a NAND lock.
Rageagainstthecage so easy a caveman can do it.

[Q] Rooted and installed the ICS Rom. Can I go back to Stock if necessary?

Hello. First off, I want to thank everyone for their hard work here. I have followed many tutorials and have seen many great conversations to keep noobs like me from making mistakes when trying to delve into the world of ROMs and rooting. However, I did encounter some troubles while installing the ICS rom onto my bionic (running on .902). I think I may have accidentally overwritten the stock rom backup that I made with safe strap or whatever that app is (I'm sorry, like I said, I am a complete noob). Is there a way to restore the phone to stock, as in before I even touched it, even if the backup I made during the process is gone by my mistake?
I'm sure this has been asked a million times, and if so, I apologize, but as I noob, I have no idea how to even begin to search for clues. Walkthroughs would be nice, but links are fine too, since I'm sure there are plenty of the same questions out there.
Thanks!!!

Thanks! Can that be used after the .902 update? Is it possible to do a dual-boot type deal between stock and the ICS version I have installed? I've seen mentions of dual-boot around here, but I can't get a clear grasp on whether it is possible or not, or if so, how to do it. Thank you very much!

Yeah I'm sure you can.
Get on stock .902(here).
Install SafeStrap.
Backup Stock Rom by Toggling "SafeMode"
Boot up ICS.
When you want to go to Stock .902 undo "SafeMode" and the Stock Rom should boot up on Reboot
Thanks for the answer! Hopefully I can give this a shot soon!

Enable Usb Debugging and Unknown Sources. Download Motohelper drivers
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
I'm sorry I probably should be a little more specific. I have both of those enabled and I do have the Motohelper drivers installed. I am following the steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22758211#post22758211
On step 8, I do not see a file named FXZ or a file with that extension, but I figured it was the file with the name that the zip file had. I chose that file after clicking "..." and hit Start, but it doesn't do anything.
I am running the ICS version cyanogen mod 9.0.0-rc0-droid_bionic-kang build number alpha_2012_02_10
I already have SafeStrap installed (used that to get this rom on). So, looks like I'm stuck on or around step 8 from the other steps posted. Once I can get past that, I can continue with the steps posted in this thread!
Thanks!!!

Yes, the XML file is the one I select. However, it will not do anything in RSD. Is there anything I can do to enable ADB in order to let RSD run?
Update: I found a way to do it. I think things are going okay so far. Looks like it is installing. If it does install successfully, I would like to do everything perfectly right going forward.
So, after this is installed, I will want to:
1. Get root access again using Motofail? I assume doing this return to stock will remove root access.
2. Install SafeStrap. Once that is done, I toggle Safemode to enabled, which will backup my stock rom and protect it from being overwritten?
3. Then, flash ICS from the zip files on my sdcard?

[Q] I Still Don't Get It...

Hello all,
Okay, I'm a total noob when it comes to the LG Revo. I had my D1 and my DX and I worked it all out and had it setup and rooted just fine, but the LG and this OTA ZV8 update is killing me. So here is my dilemma.
First I don't get the lingo...clockworkmod (CWM) = boot screen/command screen, right...like dos kinda?
Second, flash? What is that is that where I hold power + volume down button to get boot/command/dos screen, when phone is powered off?
Okay now for the good crazy stuff. I had my Revo rooted, got the update, failed. Figured it was because the root was on it, so unrooted to push OTA update, still fail...is still epic failing and is getting on my last nerve, so badly I'm ready to throw my phone...and I've never wanted to that to my babies (phones). Anyway, unrooted still failing update.
Was on another forum where very nice guy gave me stuff to do, tried it however, when did the "Flash" it only wiped my phone and put it back to stock. Had phone plugged into computer via USB...tried to follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583023 but after phone wiped didn't know what to do. This is where I am now, with a wiped phone and this has been since 9am pdt.
Hope this all makes since. Can anyone offer any help here? I'd like to get my Revo back up and running and I'd really love to get my apps back on so I can function.
Thanks for understanding and your help is greatly appreciated. Oh, please talk to me like I'm a noob lol...Or I won't get it, I promise I will do my best and try not to sound as dumb as I feel right now.
Thanks &
*Edit* I forgot, I read somewhere that in order to use CWM the phone had to be rooted so I couldn't've flashed to it anyway? Is that wrong information?

Ok... here is what you do to get root. Follow that thread and install the v8 tot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337386
After the lgpnst program completes (around 20min) successfully you will be running the latest v8.
Once that is done. Connect your phone set the usb to internet and turn on debugging from the settings | applications | development section and then follow this the instructions in this thread. Unzip the file and run the bat file and follow the directions in the command window.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1621625
As for clockwork mod (which a basically is a program that can be run before android loads that allows you to make low level system changes, when you make these changes it is called flashing) I am not running it on my phone but I am sure someone here can tell you how to put it on your phone running v8 rooted.

Typed "." with both just the dot and then again with the quotes and nothing. According to my computer the file is on C:\ but I can't find it in LGNPST there. And it's not in any of my other files that I can see.
I think I did something wrong...But I followed it exact. Becoming very disconcerted with my Revo.
At that point you should explore into the directory where you put the .tot file. Copy the location, go back to the LG tool and paste the directory location. It should allow you to open the file. If you have any problems please respond.

Ok, so moving along on this lol...I've followed all of the instructions. Downloaded, uploaded, installed, copied, pasted, created new folders, dragged and dropped everything it told me to do.
This file "C:/VS910ZV4_04.S4_04.P58008.R5.user.tot.bin" is only showing up in my computer as a shortcut, not as a file. This is after researching and finding it on my computer. Did I do something wrong? Am I downloading an incorrect file? I'm not sure where this particular file came from as, everything else is as described in the "how to" threat.
I think I may have figured it out. Will get back to you. Thanks again!!

I have updated my LG p990 to android 4.0.4 using LG´s own software (Stock ROM), and I wonder if there is any way to root that as of yet? superoneclick dont work it seems anymore / yet, and I wonder if the tool from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020737
perhaps work to root with option 8 but I cant tell myself just by reading and I´m not allowed to ask there directly myself since I lack postcount.
any help will be greatly appriciated!
your sincerely Natherul
Use option 3 for root your phone.

EDIT:
seems it changed the power button though..... now holding it in wont give me option to turn off and pressing it once wont turn off screen, help please
EDIT2:
nvm my edit, pressed home and power together once to make a screenshot then it works with power as normal again..... phone just thought i was holding down home....
Hey there.
How about try option 2. then change recovery to nvflash?
Then once you have a new custom recovery. Look for a stock ROM here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2076882
its rooted so that might fix it..
not sure if this is gonna work for you though. might wait for someone more experienced to confirm this.
thanks for trying to help puffingman but i got it working I had to use nvflash method and what went wrong before was the installation of su app (superuser), after downloading a new copy and doing it again its rooted

[Q] From 2.3.3 to 4.2, no usb connection

Hello, I've got a Galaxy S, and it works great apart from the usb port. My pc (and others too) isn't able to recognise it. I mean, it detects the phone connected but I can't go further... Already tried with many versions of samsung drivers, kies too, windows 8, 7, xp... It seems that usb port is fault.
So the question is, since there's the 3a recovery on it, is there any way to root, and install CWM on it, without using a pc?
Or am I stuck on 2.3.3?
I've already tried zroot and similars... They just don't work.
Sorry for my English, and thanks to everyone
Have you tried using the USB drivers in this forum?

enable usb debugging

Thanks for your replies... Yes I've already tried driver, three different versions, with usb debug enabled and disabled... But the result is the same. :/
edit:
When I connect the phone to my pc, I can hear a sound but there're no notification about usb connection.
It's probably hardware-related...
So I was wondering if there's a way to do everything on the phone, without a pc
Mobile ODIN?
installed from external sd?

yea I saw that... But it requires a rooted phone, and mine isn't... And for rooting I need to use odin... It's a vicious circle :|

You try this one? it works for me with a 2.3. rom that i flashed, and i cant'n conect usb
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834428
Yes, I tried exactly that. I guess it hasn't worked because of the 3e recovery, which doesn't allow to flash unsigned zips...
When I try to root the phone through that app, it stucks and then the app crashes.
searching the web... one idea

Download an update of GB from www.sammobile.com/firmwares, I think it may be signed by manufacturer, and install update zip from recovery. Maybe it solve 3e hell.
waiting news...
Thank you very much! I'll try it today and post here the results
edit:
I got an error: "E:Short write of /tmp/sideload/package.zip (No space left on device)
But, I have wiped everything and there are GBs of free space... Now I'm looking for an eventual solution for this
good luck!!

I think you have to find how to "downgrade 3e recovery to 2e" without usb (odin or haid..)
take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
or search on google "downgrade 3e recovery to 2e"
After some days of research, I'm about to give this up...
The last option was downgrading to 2e recovery. No usb working, no root, 3e recovery doesn't let me flash anything.
I haven't found any official/certified/signed firmware released by Samsung which works on 3e recovery, and OTA update doesn't find anything.
Firmwares from sammobile aren't signed, I've tried, they don't work.
Apparently there is no solution apart from getting the usb port fixed, if I want to mod the phone.
Anyway, thank you all!
Unbelievable, but finally I've solved everything
I've just spent an hour scratching the microusb port on the phone, again and again, and now I'm running cwm and rooted 2.3.6
Again, thank you all
Sometimes it is really unbelievable
Small reason and great effect :good:
But it`s perfect when it not works ,fine !!!
So now you can go through to 4.2.2
