How to use Odin 1.3? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm trying to use Odin 1.3 to flash JF7, and the SRE mod. I was running JF6 with the SRE mod. So far, I've used Odin one-click to wipe (with phone booted), reformatted internal sd (after reboot), and one-click restored to factory JF6 (from download mode). Now, my phone is booted, and not connected to USB. I have "Odin3. [Android + SLP]" open, and extracted the I897UCJH7.rar file, and also extracted the resulting I897UCJF7_homebinary.rar file.
Here's my question--how the hell do I use Odin 3?!? I've read that it can be picky, and I would rather just do it right the first time I've read all this stuff about .tar and .pit files, but cant seem to find them from any of the rars i've extracted. Odin3 is able to find I897UCJ7_homebinary.rar when opening a file in the "PDA" option of the program. When opening a file from the "Phone" option of the program, I'm able to open the aforementioned rar, and also the modem.bin file in the folder extracted from I897UCJ7_homebinary.rar.
So, do I open the file from the PDA option, or the PHONE option? Also, what's the deal with these pit and tar files? Do I need to load either to flash JF7?
I just can't seem to find a comprehensive overview of the program anywhere....
Thanks a lot!
Edit--turns out I897UCJF7_homebinary is actually a .tar file. The rest of questions still stand
Edit--It also seems that the I897UCJF7_homebinary.tar might just have to be loaded into the PDA sections of the app. Not sure about this yet.
Edit--I think the answer might be here, post #194: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780887

Yeah, that is pretty much all you need to do. Make sure you are using the full odin program and not the one click.

[Q] What do i do with an .Odin3.Dump file?

When I first flashed my GT-I9000 I didn't know about the ClockworkMod backup option, so used the Dump option in ODIN3 - thinking this would cover all bases.
Now I've got a .odin3.dump file and don't know what to do with it.
The PDA field only allows .tar .md5 and .smd files
but the PHONE field allows .bin files
Do I rename it to .bin and use it as a PHONE file?
If so - What would be the settings to flash i.e. 512.pit / Re-Partition / EFS Clear?
I've founds lots of posts asking what to do with the .odin3.dump file, but no answers - I'm sure a lot of folk would welcome an answer to this.

Nope, still hoping someone will reply with what the dump file is for.

Building a new AIO, need kk4 1 clicks

looking for some 1 clicks for kk4. need both with and without bootloaders. that or a guide to making them and a copy of the stock kk4 with bootloaders. thanks in advance.
^ In the i897ucKF1 leaked Firmware .rar download, there is an Odin DL Creator that u can use to make One Click Downloaders. There are Manuals included in there as well, but unfortunately they got corrupted somewhere along the way and I could never find a way to open and read them. But the process to build the One Click was still easy enough to figure out.
Run the DLCreator v1.8 then choose the Downloader tab and then navigate to where this Creator file is and select the Odin3Execution v1.81 and then simply proceed down the tabs loading the files, select the Options u want (re-partition, auto reboot) and then select the File Name, then Downloader Title. After that is done select the Make Downloader tab.
Now I did encounter freezes/force closes (if u will) with the Creator, but I would just simply have to start over and then it would work. The i897ucKF1 firmware, u can get from here... http://www.sammobile.com/forum/showthread.php?t=306 (u will probably have to register and log in)
And as an alternative there is the Heimdall One-Click - ROM Packaging and Distribution System. See the link here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19386742&postcount=1

thanks a ton. i remember seeing a guide somewhere on converting cwm zips to odin tars. i knew i kept my noobuntu install for something lol.
found the odin creator and a stock kk4 md5 ball. time to do some research on the proper way to remove the bootloaders.
EDIT: sorry for double post. please merge if possible.
Use an Archiver (IZArc, 7zip, etc.) and extract the .tar out of the .rar that u downloaded. Then click on the name of the .tar.md5 to rename it and simply delete the .md5 from the name. Select yes to make the change. Open the .tar and then u will see the files. Bootloaders are of course the boot.bin and sbl.bin files (they r in the main.tar file. Think it was named Code something blah blah). Drag them to desktop to keep in a seperate file and then just delete them out of the .tar file. The param.lfs of course contains the initial bootslash jpeg image. And etc., etc.
Also, just fyi, this was a full wipe leaked firmware. --> (Edit: the KF1 was a full wipe, all others since have only wiped /cache after the install. And the other leaks since KF1 have only been in single .tar file, where as the kf1 was in 3 different .tar files)

[Q] Cannot open Kies/Samsung firmware file

Hello forum-comers,
I want to update my cell's firmware using Kies, but neither this nor FOTA are possible. I've trying using Kies to download a firmware file (to %username%\appdata\local\temp\Binary\GT-I9000 folder), and got a "download complete" notice. The file is supposed to be a *.tar archive containing other *.tar archives that are flashable with Odin, but it has no extension (just a name) and I can't open it. I've tried adding a *.tar or a *.zip extension but it didn't seem to help.
Does anyone know how to open or use that file?
Problem solved
Okay, it turns out that the file is encrypted somehow, and there's a program that can open it (as well as check and download firmware without the Kies suite) - it's called Check Fus, and you can read about it on this thread from a couple of years ago, or head to the dev's website. The decrypted file is a zip containing both a firmware *.tar file that can be flashed using Odin, as well as a *.dll the purpose of which I don't know.

[Q] Tar archives for Odin, what format are they? (restoring a phone)

Hello, I think this would be the right subforum to post this thread but if it ain't feel free to move it where it belongs.
I'm helping out a friend which has an S5570I. His phone used to work but all of a sudden it didn't so he downloaded Odin and started to do god knows what with it following a YouTube video until it failed. End result: the phone seems to be soft-bricked.
In essence if started normally it would stay put in the Samsung logo, recovery can be accessed and the download mode apparently too. It was too bad this morning when I didn't see a procedure detailed here to (try to) restore the phone, so I'll try that when I have the chance.
Before knowing that it was bricked I was downloading the stuff necessary for a reflash, the questions I have are related to the firmware for the device.
I looked for the right firmware for it: matching model number and latest version matching current customization (just in case) which happens to be Movistar (Spain). I downloaded an archive with the firmware. Then I downloaded the latest version I could find of Odin (4.43 although I have 4.38 and 4.42 around here as well) and an OPS file for the model (named TASS_v1.0.ops).
So doing a dry-test here (without the actual phone) I did the following:
- Opened Odin (4.38 and later 4.43).
- Selected the OPS file.
- Checked the "One Package" option.
- Selected the tar.md5 file in the proper section.
And that's where Odin crashed, so at first I though "OK... bad firmware image?". I went on and downloaded a different one, customized for Spain as well but without any operator branding specifics; only to arrive at the same result. So the thing should be the image unless that other one was corrupted as well...
I started researching about that "tar.md5" format and it seems it should be a tar file (in ustar format) with the results of an md5sum execution appended to it.
Examining any of the firmware files I have through an hex editor I saw the output of the md5sum program in the end, which was expected, but then what should be a tar archive didn't seem to be (or I don't recognize its format). There is no magic number at 0x101, and the "file" utility in Linux recognizes the files as data instead or tar archives.
I'd like to know if anyone knows something about this, if there's anything wrong with the firmware or if those files were created in different way. I'd like to convert them to the appropriate format to use with Odin once/if the phone is debricked.
Thanks everyone for the time dedicated to at least read all this .
PS. I uploaded the files I have here to a hosting place so that you may download them if you wish to help out, here are the links (add https:// before the link because I don't seem to be allowed to post links just jet):

Link: copy.com/poYZ64CZLLvU
(S5570IXXMC1_S5570IOXXLK3_PHE in SamMobile)
Link: copy.com/onfqEYD3rQlw
PPS. By the way, how should I detect the phone when connected in download mode in the device manager? I'm unsure of what to look for there.

[TUTORIAL] How to use Odin's repartition function on Galaxy S9

Last night, I tried flashing the Android 11 GSI to my S9 Exynos to try out. Unfortunately, it ended in a bootloop, so I decided to return to stock.
For some reason, when I flashed stock, the OS only recognised 32GB of my 64GB of internal storage. I concluded that something went wrong when flashing the GSI and the partitions on the device had been all messed up, and that I needed to repartition. To do this, you must reflash the firmware and use the repartition function in Odin.
Boot your device into Download Mode (press on, vol down, and bixby at the same time). Go to the folder where you extracted the firmware, and rename the CSC (not HOME_CSC) file to remove the .md5 extension. Then use an archive extractor that works with .tar files, I used 7-zip. Extract the CSC into a folder and then go into it, and look for a file ending in .pit. In my case, that's STARLTE_EUR_OPEN.pit. That's the file you need to repartition. Now rename the CSC file back to .tar.md5.
Open Odin, and select all the firmware (BL, AP, etc) as you would usually. Then go to the options tab and check the re-partition box. Then go into the Pit tab. You'll get a warning saying it's only for engineers, but do not worry, anybody can use it if they know how to. Click on the PIT button, and then navigate to your CSC folder and select the .pit file.
Once everything is loaded in, click start. The firmware will now flash and the device will repartition. Once it's finished, your device should reboot. Now, wait for it to load, It'll take a few minutes.
Once loaded, set everything up and then go to Settings --> Device Care --> Storage. You'll see your device has the full 64GB/128GB/256GB it came with. You have successfully restored and repartitioned your Galaxy S9.
I hope this tutorial helped you in some way.
