App/mod request - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
i have been thinking if there is an app available where the phone always uses 3g when available, however, when the phone is in sleep mode, it will switch to only use 2g(edge).
because honestly i do not need 3g unless i am browsing the net, so even if an app can just make the phone use 3g when browser is launched, then this will dramatically improve battery life

That's how (most) phones work. If you look at your symbol up top, you'll see when you click on your browser the symbol switches and when you close your browser, within a few seconds it switches back.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it only uses network when needed. Its not like iPhones.

i dont know if i changed something or you did
but my phone is always on 3G/HSDPA unless there is no 3G in the area, then it goes to EDGE...

AFAIK - there is such an app, and it'll work only on the specific ROM it was designed for - permissions issue. Look for it in Themes & Apps section.

Try "3G Only" or "Switch Network Type" they r both in the Market!

How to keep IM apps running

How can I keep applications like skype, IM+, ebuddy etc running for any length of time? Even with settings for always on and no power save, they seem to disconnect after a while, either just after a long time, or immediately after I start using the browser or other applications. And then some, like IM+, wont conenct anymore unless I force close and restart.

Are you using Edge or 3G? As far as I know, without 3G or 3.5G, you can't talk on the phone and keep the internet connection live. YMMV.
Well I have 3G switched on, but the strange thing is that when no 3G signal is available, or it's weak and drops for a bit, then the phone switches to G (gprs) rather than E (edge), or does the phone just not display E?
Having said that, it disconnects the apps regardless of whether I'm using the phone or not

hey there)
firstly about 3G <-> Edge/Gprs switching. literally speaking edge is a piece of hardware equipment embedded into the base station. afaik not every base station has it, so in case you see G that means that either you are served by above mentioned base station or all the channels are occupied by other subscribers which rarely happens nowadays, because carriers expand the capacity of the base stations in order to provide full range of services to their subs. in other words if 3G is not available you would see G or E, you can't manually force your handy to use Edge only, it's an improved version of GPRS so to say
as for the im apps disconnets. i personally use Meebo and it never signs me off. it doesn't matter if i use the phone or switch to other apps. it runs in the background as a service until i choose to sign off manually. give it a try. if it keeps running in the background then maybe Im+ have an option to keep connection alive in its configs. otherwise it can be a bug in the ROM you are using.
Hope it helps
Thanks, I'll give Meebo a try. I guess I found the 3G/G/E thing weird cause the last 2 phones I had did change from one to the other in sequence, so I assumed that this one was skipping a stage, especially as it is slower than my last phone when browsing.

edge/gprs (2G/2.5G) does not allow you to transfer data and to use voice service simultaneously. because it uses the same timeslots as voice does. but it won't disconnect you.
Thanks again for the recommendation, very stable and overall much better than previous apps I've tried for msn. The only few times I was signed off it signed me back in automatically.

Wifi and 3g icons at the same time?

I noticed that my captivate will often show both the wifi icon and 3g icon in my screen at the same time. I am using wifi to post this but 3g still shows up. This never happened in my nexus one or milestone. This also happens on multiple wifi networks for me. Any ideas?

Mine is just showing wifi and the signal bars

Some apps use your 3G connection to get a rough fix on your location (Beautiful widgets "Beautiful home" or weather bug) there's a lot more. You can usually turn that off and just put in your zipcode. I could be wrong, just a shot in the dark.
I get this too

This doesn't seem right to me. I don't get why it would have both, there is no reason for it. If I reboot my phone, it will just show one or the other but over time it creeps back to showing both. I think its a software problem.
I am also wondering about the wifi. How do you know it's using wifi instead of 3g? Does it automatically switch over to wifi whenever it connects to one?

Thats the thing, I have seen it say I am on wifi but it still shows the 3G indicator and will show 3G activity (the activity arrows on the 3G icon light up).

It might be because you have no apps trying to find your location all the time. That's why some people have 3g on sometimes with their wifi on and some don't.

Well I wish I knew what that was then, because I do have Beautiful Widgets but I also have always had geolocation disabled and have my zip code set in it.
My husband's captivate will show both wifi and 3G when he opens google maps and the only way to get ride of the 3G is to restart the phone.
I'm having the same issue and using "my settings" to disable 3G use while using wifi. Being that I'm on the very limited data plan, I'd rather not have 3G being used when it doesn't have to be. So, if there are some programs that are forcing access to 3G when I'm on wireless, I'd like to know if there's an app or somesuch that will track which programs are accessing this so I don't have to worry about changing settings all of the time?
Hello everyyone. Ive only been using this phone and android since yesterday afternoon. I played with the phone very extensively yesterday and never saw the 3g while i was on wifi and then last night i applied the gps "fix" do you think that could of caused it to show. did all who is having this problem apply the gps fix ?
I believe using a push syncing service like exchange will cause this. on my windows mobile phones exchange wouldn't work over wifi.
Hmm is the default mail app an exchange like server ? So I should pull my info from that one and soley use the gmail app?

My problem showed up after this as well, but I can't imagine that would be the cause of it...
I'm seeing both Wifi and 3G on as well. Oddly enough, only Wifi seems to be on after it sits for a night (both charging and just unplugged). As soon as I disabled Wifi, 3G came back on, but after reenabling Wifi, the 3G stayed on.
As far as I can tell with 3G Watchdog, it's not using 3G when they're both on, but I'm worried that battery life is impacted by having them both on. I'm assuming this isn't normal behavior then.
FYI, I also applied the GPS fix, but I think I was seeing them both on even before I did that.
I get this as well, even when not using maps. I noticed it before I did the gps fix.
I do use gmail app which uses push, but still WIFI should always take over once connected. I noticed though that on the 3G icon the upload/download arrows are grey, not white or red (the transmit/receive colors).
I was concerned at first but I installed the AT&T app and I don't have a lot of data usage. I think its a bug.
I had both icons as well for a couple of days while in a wifi area. Messed with the gps settings again today and I'm back to wifi only icon. Didn't even reboot.

H and 3G

After flashing CM6RC2 I can see that the data connection keeps switching between 3G and H, while it does this, my connection goes on and off, and I believe it's killing my battery as well.
I'm pretty sure it's not the ROM because the connection goes on and off while I was on stock. The ROM just made the difference of showing the data changing.
Is there a way I can make it go between only Edge and 3G, or just Edge and H? Like to try it that way for a few days and see how it goes.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
No and no. Your connection does nothing wrong, you have data streaming - that's why you see H coming on. If you want to save your battery - look for the application that pulls the data constantly. HSDPA is extension of UMTS (3G), it works when you're connected 3G.

Can you give me an example of "pulling data constantly"? Like setting up Twitter to check for updates every 15 min?
Everytime my battery goes low and I check usage, the top two are Display and Cell Standby, with Display having a huge lead.
That's what you're going to have. Your battery status looks ok.
Example - setting a widget to update every minute, or setting a widget to update when it can't access whatever it needs to access. Also, if I'm not mistaken, data usage shows as a part of "Voice calls" or "Phone idle", and not as a part of "Cell standby" or "Display". I'll try to verify it later today.
Now this is curious to me, I just recently unlocked/rooted and flashed to CM6 RC1, on a Nexus One. I'm on a ATT Microcell and previous to root always had 3G at pretty constant speeds around 1.5/1.6 Mbps. Since flashing I see the H i'm guessing probably 60/70% of the time and after looking at the DalviK Debug Monitor Logs i'm pretty sure I know what widgets/apps are keeping the data connection alive. The thing is though when the H is displayed the highest speeds I see using the Speedtest app are around 0.2/0.3 Mbps which seems pretty lousy. If I go to *#*#info#*#* and click WCDMA only I seem to lose my connection altogether, although I didn't leave it there long. I'd like to go back to 3G only but not sure how to go about this, it was never an issue before root/flash, and I really like The Cyanogen Mod, my device is more stable now then when I was running stock 2.2 FRF91. Any ideas? or am I stuck with this situation until I flash something else, or go back to stock (ain't gonna happen, the stock thing).
Cyan ROMs automatically set your build prop file hsxpa to 1, but stock value is 2. This probably is limiting your speed. I know it caps my upload speed to 0.3 Mbps so I edit the value back to stock of 2.
BTW, if this thread is still up - I've checked, and the data (at least when I tether) falls under "Voice calls" category.
Is it possible to adjust build.prop to only use H and Edge?

what you are seeing is the way the microcell works, i think it only operates at a certain frequency and registers with the phone at whatever rate is displayed when the cyanogen icon is displayed for 3g, the slower data speed is because the microcell uses your own internet pipe when you use data from the cell
nope to both!

Always on hspda?

Is there a way to force the phone to always be on hspda?
Normally it would switch back to umts after like 2 seconds after being done transferring data.
I read a lot of comics, and switching between comics takes a few seconds every time because it needs to switch from umts to hspda. When it for some reason already is using hspda it loads the next comic in a second. So it can save quite some time if you read comics a lot.
Also will it significantly drain more battery? I will of course set it back to standard when I don't use my phone.
Thanks in advance.
No you can't. It's the network that switches you over, not the phone.

Okay. Thanks for the quick and helpful answer.
is there a way to force a faster switch from umts to hsdpa?
when i hit a link in my browser i notice that it takes 3-10 seconds before umts switches to hsdpa.
The only thing you could do is have something constantly using the data connection so it never drops back to basic 3G.
You can set your phone to only use an hsdpa/umts connection by dialing *#*#4636#*#* and chosing WCDMA Only in the Phone Info section.
Edit: whoops didn't really read the OP. this doesnt help

You're right, I guess running a ping command from a terminal client will do just that. Atm I'm on gprs only since I'm home, but it seems to keep the data connection busy while it runs in the background.
To the battery thing: yes, it'll drain the battery much faster.

[Q] [Modem] Non-HSUPA Modems?

[Q] Assuming whoever reads this post is familiar with the 4G, 3G, Edge monikers could someone let me know if there exists a modem for the captivate that only uses Edge?
[Reason for Question:]
Yesterday, messing around with settings I noticed that my phone has the ability to change from 4G/3G -> E. Doing this I noticed an immediate improvement with my battery life. I could surf the net, read emails, get notifications, and do everything I could do before. Just now my battery could last for 2+ days.
I am fully aware that a 4G connection can be faster than 3G and a 3G connection can be faster than E.
Although, I thought about the logical progression of events that may occur in my life, and if I ever found myself in a situation where I would need to download a large file it would likely be in response to something premeditated.
Therefore, I would likely be at some location where WIFI would be accessible or, if not, I could always remember to download it before I actually need it.
However, extrapolating that thought process out further, I thought okay well if there is WIFI around then there is a need for it. Therefore devices that can download and process at much faster speeds could be available. If those devices aren’t available I still have the ability to hop onto the WIFI network and download using my integrated wireless NIC.
Using this I have deduced that I do not, or will not ever, need High Speed connections on my phone. I do however like the android operating system and love my phone so I am in a bind. On one side there is the smart phone market and generation saying "faster is better" and on the other side there is me saying, "I want a phone that I can play some sweet games, utilize useful apps, check email, and have a true internet browser experience but at the end of the day I still want to be able to make a phone call damn it".
Don't get me wrong having ridiculously fast internet on my phone is cool but so was smoking when I was 16.
I'm not aware of an edge only modem.
Also there is no voice and data at the same time on edge. So if something is using data at the time you get a call it will go to voicemail. Just putting that out there in case you did not know.
settings>wireless and network>mobile networks> set network mode to gsm only.....
That way if you ever DO need 3g you can turn it back on too!
Thanks BenKranged and studacris .
I decided to go with Serendipity Rom -> http://serendipityrom.weebly.com/
Disabled HSDPA -> http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-turn-off-hsdpa-for.html
And if I want to I can only enable Edge as studacris explained.
I now get 2+ days out of a single charge and moderate to light use!
I am satisfied now!
p.s. Plus I flashed the ability to record calls so that is pretty cool too!
