[Q] n00b question about "userland camera fix" - Touch Diamond2, Pure Android Development

Hi
XDAndroid is so cool! Of course a few unstabillities.
I have seen that there is an userland camera fix. Does anyone have a link to a thread about this?
I have TD2 Topaz

Actually, user-land support is there in latest builds. However, that doesn't mean that camera is working.
The simplified architecture of Android (or any *nix based system for that matter) is as follows:

Kernel (you could say drivers)

Hardware
Each level interacts with what's above it and below it directly. Meaning, for the camera to be usable, we still need to wait for the kernel side support which is still a work in progress.

OK so we hav wifi battery, keys, apps, pretty much the basics, except the camera which i think we need to start working on, currently have have much or less evrthing wrkig to hav this running, if the camera can be worked on we can jus head on just on develping and finalizing the other developments, i think if everyone who is involved in this project, if sucessful should present our work to sony and google, and im sure they will be impressed,.../may even think about employing some of us...sooo lets gett this show on the road,,,....lights CAMERA..Action!!!

Yes, but you must have X1 plugged in when launching android. Otherwise it won't be detected.
ok maby it is a stupid question but can anyone explain me why it is so hard to make camera work don take it like i'm underestimateing devs I only want to know what has to be done to make it work i'know that it is a lot of work but i wanna know what kind of work has to be done

the changes are pushed to git. the camera preview works now. not sure if anything else is working. take care, this version will drain battery power because the video decoder is never powered off. also, the sensor settings are a bit incorrect, and the logcat is filled with errors.. will fix that after the exams

Simply replace zImage.. I'm afraid it won't work on any current X1 build, you need camera libraries from htc magic 2.2 upgrade.. I'll update you with all the info once camera snapshot and video are fully working

Hi
I had the day off, and decided to have a play with the Kitchen to see what I could come up with. After following the instructions on theunlockr.com I decided to base my rom on the OpenFire v.2.3 rom. Any issues that rom had, mine will have.
I have added a few things and changed a couple of things, but in the end, this is my first rom for a device I do not have myself. I have an HTC Desire, but noticed that the Wildfire isn't getting as much love, hence that choice. I hope to get a better understanding of what it takes to make a proper custom rom at some time in the future.

This ROM is from the android source there is no HTC apps or extra apps from the start it do come with spareparts and dev tools from android source. At the moment it seems a bit slow I think that is due to animations, animations can be turned of in spareparts or in the settings menu.

To get app2sd to work you need an ext partition when you have that you might have todo a full wipe and reflash the ROM to get app2sd to work

Why don't you stick to a phone you have and help projects that just need help instead of reinventing the wheel over and over again?

I've had my desire for a while, and decided to root it about a month ago. I have now installed a custom rom, and I'm enjoying the fiddling around. I don't have too much knowledge, apart from experiences gained in the last week or so.
I tried talking a colleague into installing a custom rom, but he said there weren't too many for the Wildfire, so I said I'd have a play. I'm treating it as a learning curve, as I've always been interested in programming, but never really had the time. I have created a (very) small program for the Mac, and have written a few batch files but thats as far as I've taken it.
In an afternoon I've set up a Linux VM, installed all the needed software and had a play to see what I can realistically do. I see this as a first step. I'm trying to talk the wife into a Wildfire so I can have one to play with!
If the consensus is I should delete the thread, then so be it.

[Q] About the ~200 line Linux kernel patch that does wonders

Hello, guys!
I guess most of you know about this "magic patch" that significantly boosts Linux speed. It's going to be merged in the 2.6.38 branch and it's shipping with Ubuntu Natty too. But this kernel patch can be applied to a previous kernel as well, just rebuilding it with this 224 magical lines of code.
What I wanted to know is if it's possibile to rebuild our kernels with this patch, if it is already, or if it's possibile but won't have significant boosts on Android devices.

This has been discussed here twice &found not to help because we dont use harddisk.

Thank you, but can you please link the thread with this discussion? I can't seem to find it. Also, this patch regards CPU, not hard disks.
this patch will be officially introduced in the 2.6.38 kernel..
also, this kernel will have about 50% more speed increase, due to the 200 lines patch and another issue resolved after it .. in general the upcoming kernel will be blazingly fast !!
there is a script that tries to do the same as the patch for earlier kernels. which I use on my Ubuntu laptop, and yes major performance increase !!
I tried to apply it to my previous phone (HTC Hero), but didn't work. I also asked Cyanogen on his twitter, but didn't care to give me an answer..
finally I gave up, and decided to wait for the next Android version that will have the 2.6.38 in the future..

I'm using that script too on Maverick! I don't think there should be a significant increase in responsiveness if you apply it on high-end systems, but our SGS might benefit from it (as my old dual core system).
You say it didn't work on your Hero, but were there any errors in dmesg or you didn't find any significant change in speed?

dmesg should no difference. the script just showed a lot of errors.
I tried the "non-Ubuntu" version as described in Webupd8, but still similar errors.
I guess Android place the kernel differently from Linux desktops.
I might be mistaken, but SO kernel uses its. And haven't really noticed any difference with or without it.

please don't spread incorrect facts:
* the "automated per tty task groups" (or autogroup) patch - by using cgroups (in CFS - the cpu scheduler) and thus isolating several taks from each other, giving them dedicated slices of cpu power - allows the system to be more responsive under load if there is a kind of cpu hog (task producing much load)
* the speed increase is due to Nick Piggin's VFS changes and Andrea Arcangeli & Mel Gorman's Transparent Hugepages (THP) support (and of course lots of other changes)

so you tried SO kernel with the patch applied and once reverted ?
but - yeah, I got you: I'm myself running a heavy patched 2.6.37 kernel with transparent hugepages, CFS autogroup, etc. enabled - and it certainly can play off its advantage most noticably during heavy system load

So, please, correct my noobiness, isn't Android using TTY shells? If it's not than I understand why this patch can't be applied, but if it is, rebuilding a kernel with just 200 lines more is no big deal and we all could benefit from it. It's not very common for Android to be under heavy load but hey, it's going to be default in 2.6.38, so why not?

Yes, that's exactly the script I was talking about a few posts ago. On my system running 2.6.35, I did not rebuild the kernel with the "patch of wonders" but applied this script. But as you may have read, it acts in userspace which is slightly different in Android (as far as I know it's not using the same environment variables and I don't know about any ~/.bashrc equivalents, but again correct me if I'm wrong), that's why a kernel-oriented patch would be more suitable.

well, you could rewrite that script that it is run as a init-script (afaik in /system/init.d/ )
besides that:
there are stripped down (smaller) versions of bash 4.1* that are known to work on CM6 and the HTC Hero
so it should be a possibility to use that script on stock roms, too
if you can install busybox & root it, there also should be the possibility to install bash

I'm not a coder, though, so I hope a kernel developer could pick this up and go for BFS. You said laststufo already implemented this patch in his kernel, so that's really good! We should just find a way of testing its effectiveness.

Yes, I've also seen bash shipping with some ROMs, so it's definitely possibile, though as I said before, I'm no coder...

Uhm, so it seems BFS isn't stable on our hardware, pretty bad.

Hi, sorry to post of question here, but it seems it is the only place where it is possible to talk about development for the GT-73xx.
I would like to do some work on the kernel, I am looking at this : [not allowed to post a link to motley-git]
But is there a guide on how to compile this GT-7310 kernel, and how to safely flash it to the tablet ? Does Samsung publish the source code of the bootloader ?
My goal is to develop a simple graphical user interface for a particular application using OpenGL but still be able to access the hardware features like WIFI, Audio, USB and multi-touch. So the tablet would only run my application.
I do not really need to run the Android OS (especially any java components), but if there are some kind of hardware android APIs I can still use from my C/C++ app, that would be great.
any help will be much appreciated

What is chroot?
A chroot image is like a Virtual Machine where you are running an O.S within an O.S.The point of this is that you have a whole Linux System running on a phone where you can ofcourse access all the utilities available in Linux.and as it runs inside of android you dont need to flash anything and can use both the chrooted O.S and Android together.
Things required:-
1)Terminal
2)Root
3)Sdcard with atleast 2GB of free space
4)A Brain

The Miui i used was on Stock Kernel.The Kernel Does Support Loop devices.Miui is a Rebase of CM but the loop functionality is related to Kernel.So,Yes it Works on Stock Kernel on Locked/Unlocked Bootloaders Both as we are not flashing anything.
Anyway Give Ubuntu a go.

Thanks! Just clarifying things out I haven't meddled with stock kernel that much that's why I am asking. Well the kernel sources sony provided has loop devices disabled by default glad that it's enabled on the official precompiled one.
Anyways! Try packing backtrack that should be alot useful than debian w/ lxde or a classic ubuntu image.
I got backtrack to run on Pro sometime ago when I was still using gingerbread.

the debian image is a squeeze version. Plus included is the fix for pulse audio. I'm not sure if it would work out of the box for android but with just a little bit knowledge with basic linux stuffs you could get it running perfectly

THANKS for the link...Meego wont chroot..tried it on the optimus a few months ago and failed..problem with zephyr..will give it a go later.fedora I had as well..but the thing is ...Does anyone except me even use these here????
I do but not that much. Like I said I just only tried backtrack and obviously I use it only when needed
Say do you think it would be possible to include a custom kernel on a chrooted image? It would be cool if we have backtrack here with monitor mode enabled. I think the wlan drivers/hardware of Xperia devices have the capability.
Or also try posting this thread to some other Xperia Sub forums. Arc/Pro users seem to be not very open to these kind of works. They just care on custom ROMs
In short they aren't geeky enough They aren't even that interested in dual booting.

In theory yes its possible.but changes will have to be made to the arm kernel to chroot.when u type uname in terminal the output inside the chroot is different than the android kernel.but I think native booting will be better than chrooting..not being interested is just odd....its so much fun having linux on the go

A chroot image is like a Virtual Machine where you are running an O.S within an O.S.The point of this is that you have a whole Linux System running on a phone where you can ofcourse access all the utilities available in Linux.and as it runs inside of android you dont need to flash anything and can use both the chrooted O.S and Android together.check the Screenshots.

Actually I know I am going to say something Off-Topic
1) People on XDA are now the people who have got a smartphone just because they can afford one and wanna make their phone look "kewl" than the others with the same device
2) People do dumb things like cross flashing kernels.. They dont even read carefully what the OP says..
3) Running linux on a phone would be the best thing.. specially on an xperia pro where you get a harware keyboard..
