[Q] Using Vibrant Custom ROMs on Captivate? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In this thread, especially towards the end after someone posted the GPS fix, everybody is talking about how fantastic thier GPS is working. I'm running 2.1.6 of Cognition, and while I love the ROM, I'd love to be able to say my GPS runs well.
What is involved in getting a Vibrant ROM to work on Captivate? Are they close enough to work?

They are not close enough to be able to put the Vibrant ROM on without any modifications. There are a couple cross platform ROMS the Eugene has made, basically a Vibrant ROM that uses code from the Captivate. Otherwise we are SOL for their ROM's.

can i get a link to the vibrant roms that are compatible now?

Cognition 2.41 is a vibrant hybrid
Captivate
Cog 2.4

So when you flash a ported vibrant, or even i9000, rom what version of Clockwork recovery would you flash? Is it still the captivate version or would be the appropriate version for the rom installed?

If I remember correctly you would still select Captivate because of the hardware.

Custom Rom Options?

Hey everyone. I'm posting here because I have a friend with a Captivate and I'm trying to get him to root his phone.
I sent him the link to the 1 click root but I don't know what rom to have him flash. I have an EVO and in the EVO forums we have a sticky with all the custom roms listed so it's easy to see what's there. Is there anything like that for you guys?
He's basically looking for a stable 2.2 rom.

The Captivate DEV scene isn't too large right now, (most of them are in the Vibrant section) We have few custom roms, but the ones you can find, along with mods can be found in the Development section of Captivate.

This is very true. Most went to vibrant because they were ex-G1 users. However the good news is the most of the coding will be the same so they are relatively easy to port. I have a feeling the captivate will not be getting as much dev action, and most people are switching from windows mobile or iPhone and have no android dev experience. But it will eventually speed up
Don't have him flash a custom ROM just to flash a custom ROM. Right now there are a limited number of ROMs, and he can read up on them in the dev to see if there is anything changes in the newer firmwares that would make it worth his time to flash. AFAIK, there are no fully functional, stable 2.2 ROMs (although the leaked build for the i9000/international version does mostly work, I think). There are also a few leaked updates to the 2.1 firmware.

Yea, that's why I am asking if there are any stable 2.2 roms yet. But as I gather there aren't. I'll just tell him to keep his eyes open here.
I've been using Cognition 2.2b6 for about 4 months now with no problems. Seems to be the most stable rom out there for the captivate.
I've been using Cognition 2.3b3 for several weeks and it's working great, the only issue for me is the android email process crashes on startup, I use the gmail app anyway, so its a non issue for me... It took 3 or 4 days to get the correct order of opperations, it seems not everything you find on XDA works for every Captivate, I guess AT&T keeps disabling settings and crapware crippling the phone... But the order that worked for me was:
STOCK AT&T 2.2 FROYO:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282
ROOT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
JI6 KERNEL:
I did not root with the link in this post (was already rooted when I found it)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226
COGNITION:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
SIDELOAD:
Option two worked for me, option one did not.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376
Now that I've done all this I could NEVER go back to stock, it's like having a completely different phone... Unbelievable upgrade. F-U AT&T.
Hands down Cognition to start. When he's ready to move on Cognadian Bacon!
Swyping...please read slowly!
Cool. Thanks for all the replies. I just flashed the latest Cognition beta for him yesterday actually. He's so much happier. Haha.

I was gonna say perseption. Its really the most captivate friendly of the ports for other galaxy s phones. You get the reorient kernel with overclock undervoult, universal lagfix, clockwork mod instead of 2e recovery, and you get working bluetooth audio, normal batery life, multiple fonts, password/pin number/pattern security, other things i forgot.
Axura looks amazing but noone will answer my questios about bugs. And there is no known issues listing.

Can anyone pm me a froyo captivate dump.

Hi I have made a rom for the i9000 called ULTIMATE. look at my threads and you will find it, I was wondering if captivate users will also like it, if so pm me a clockwork dump of a froyo rom. Basically do a nandroid backup of your phone, then connect your phone to your PC and in your SD card, go to clockwork>backup. There will be a folder with today's or whenever's date and pm me cache.img and system.img inside that folder. Have a good day

Yeah. Almost all our roms are based off you guy's source with reoriented kernels.

I think the Cognition roms are built on the JI6 which is a Captivate rom.
Not certain though.
Both the JI6 and JJ4 based roms are for the Captivate. Neither one uses a reorient kernel.
he's not asking for a froyo source; he's asking for a froyo dump. this includes JI6 and JJ4. I'd do it myself but I'm not at a computer :/

No one is going to "upgrade" to an old/slow/beta build of froyo when the official 2.2.1 jpx build is out for the i9000.
I certainly wouldn't use a captivate rom. I was thrilled when the reorient kernels made it possible to use the i9000 roms and totally get away from the att crap

I think most of us would rather have your ultimate rom customized for the captivate but still an i9000 rom. similar to what doc has done for us and what some of the other devs have done around here with the i9000 roms

just like nobody is using cognition that is built completely on JJ4? that thread still gets a few pages of posts every day. even if it is an old beta build, it's still fast.

Have you tried jpx? Its smoother and faster than any previous froyo build and i'm not even running a lagfix, still running on rfs, try doing that on jj4.
I urge you to try it, you will not believe how fast it runs, plus the browser is gpu accelerated in 2.2.1 pages scroll as smooth as butter, goto www.anandtech.com right now on your jj4 build and see how badly it lags even with flash disabled.
Don't hold your phone back with a 2 month old build, getting jpx to run our phones is pretty simple you just need to add a kernel/modem/sdcard fix, but if webstar1 packages all up in one zip it'll be even simpler.
webstar1: after adding either xcal's or setiron's kernel, add either the jk4 or jl3 modem and hardcore's sdcard fix then it'll work perfectly on the captivates.
+1 for the 2.2.1 usage. These roms are blazing w/o lagfix. The browser is just a pleasure to use.
Sent from my GT-I9000
i'm not on JJ4, nor have I been in a very long time. my only point is, and has been since I first posted in this thread, that it's not a dead build.
I just went back to the optimized JJ4 rom on my phone (from Cyanogenmod Beta 4 nightly). I've been on Perception and Cognition. While I haven't tried the 2.2.1 rom, I am perfectly happy with using an "old" outdated rom that was designed for my phone as every I9000 rom that I have tried otherwise has had some sort of little caveat that made it less desirable for me.
Maybe I just haven't tried the right roms, but I can't be the only one who would rather use a rom either designed from a Captivate rom or AOSP.

[Q] Rooted and applied One-Click Lag Fix, what's next?

Okay, so I've done rooting my Cappy with ECLAIR.UCJH7 update. I've also done with the lag fix from the Market. Now, what I want is to flash a new Rom. I'm somehow caught up in the middle of Cognition and Perception, I don't know which one do I use. Can you help me out? And if possible, steps on how to apply/flash it. Do I need to restore my phone to default? Thanks and sorry for too many questions.
first thing you do is get rid of that oclf. It uses a dangerous method to make the phone APPEAR faster in a quadrant test...without ANY real world improvement. Cognition is the most popular, closest to stock build. check it out here. My preference is the leaked froyo with a few tweaks heres a look at cognition http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532

Ryans oclf=REMOVE NOW! The latest version (2.3 beta 8) of cognition Is built using a kernel as close to stock as possible as i understand. It also comes with the voodoo lag fix. Voodoo is a legitimate file system restructure that produces elevated quadrant scores AND real world results http://project-voodoo.org/lagfix this comes with the latest version of cognition in the link i sent you

i9000 vs Captivate ROMs

I've done a lot of reading and can't find this exact answer...how can I tell if certain roms are Captivate based or i9000 based? I'm running Cog right now and want to flash and play around with some others, but heard that I should stick to captivate based roms so that i don't have any troubles.
Which roms are which?

You are limiting yourself to Cog and Firefly which are the only ones that are Cappy based. Both of those are based off the 2.2 update to the Rogers Cappy.
ROMS based off jpy, js3 are I9000 and you will find that listed somewhere on the rom thread. I've been on I9000 roms for several months now with no issues.

Serendipity 5.5 here, works great! Love it!
So aside from reading about any bugs on the more popular ROMs and choosing my next one based on features and bugs (or lack thereof), I shouldn't have any real issues with any of them? If so, that is what I thought, but just wanted to make sure! At one point, I thought I read that I COULDN'T run an i9000 based ROM.

I9000 roms are based off 2.2.1 froyo and really are better in so many ways than the 2.2 cappy versions. There are some versions that seem to have less issues and that's what I would look for.

[Q] suggest me a rom please

im from fascinate.. my roommate has a captivate and would like to get a rom and voodoo.. i would like to get him a super-clean rom, that everything works on. that you have source code to (meaning i can use custom kernels like voodoo) preferably zip aligned and deodexed. im running dj05 sc.9 on my fascinate, and would like something comparable.. if you have froyo source, froyo would be preferred.
thanks in advance. i appreciate any and all help.
Try dilligaf's 7.x. Link in my signature
You can't really go wrong with the newest versions of Cognition or Serendipity either. I was on Cog 4 then flashed Serendipity 6.2. Both are are very stable.
Any of the more popular roms should meet your criteria.
Is it just me or have there been an abundance of "what rom?" threads lately?
Agreed. Less reading, and more cbf'd people.
My vote is for FireFly. I have yet to have any issues and when there is an issue X is quick to get a fix out.
