[Q] Dialing Straight Numbers - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been asking around and nobody seems to know how to dial a number such as 332211. Using a Captivate. When I use the straight dial number it always puts a "-" in the middle 332-211 so the call won't go through. That number is what they call a short code. It's for text messages. I noticed even tv stations have them so you can get text messages about incidents etc.
Thanks

Did you try creating a new contact? Did you try putting *#*# before the number and #*#* after the number?

Thank you for the reply so fast gtg465x. I have tryed the contact create, didn't work. I tryed your *# but when I get to the last #* the phone goes blank. If I hit send the phone goes to the contact list.

like you said its a text message code... like 466453 for texting google...
You need to use your messaging app. not your dialer.
Phone numbers in the US are 7 digits (+area code) not 6.
Use the dialer to make phone calls and the Messaging app for sms texts.
There are also short codes for accessing various settings in the phone that you can enter into the dialer, but those are almost always surrounded by *# like *#06# which will display your IMEI

Hi pietro_spina - Ok that makes sense. However, I don't have a texting service on my phone. I'm trying to use GoogleVoice for texting. After a short search it appears Google isn't set up to let us use 6 digit codes. I tryed it and it doesn't go through. I will keep searching.
Thanks for the answer

If you use the google voice widget (select the text icon... It looks like paper) I have sucess using googles own six digit code. It cant be an empty message though.
The voice widget is part of the google voice app in the market.
P

When you go to google voice then submenu top left is a peice of paper with a pencil on it. Below it says "compose". Is that the one you are talking about? If so I've tryed it and it doesn't work. I did see in one of the reads something about the phone needs to be sms enabled. I wonder if the Captivate can't do it?

It works for me. I dont know what else to say.
I only know one short code. Google search... 466453 put that in the "to" field and as your message type "help" and google will text back some instructions.
Maybe post the short code you are trying to use? Is it some sort of pay code? Google voice might block that sort of thing.

Good Morning pietro_spina - I tryed your 466453 and it worked. It did list as 466-453 in the return message. The one I've been trying is BestBuy 332211 with text of GAMER and it won't go through. Google says error in sent message.

Sorry dude. I guess if they don't have any info about that sort of thing in the google help pages, then you are out of luck I guess.

Call Forwarding shortcuts....

Anyone have a shortcut for enabling call forwarding? I always forward to the same number. I would like to be able to use a button or voice command to bring up the call forwarding screen, and then just click yes/OK to enable or disable it. Anyone else using this?
By the way. I have been using ATT's fast forward service for a couple of years. Do I need to continue paying for this, or will the phone redirect the calls?
Thanks,
Tom
Bump. I'd really love to find how to do this also, I'm doing it several times a day ...
On my 8925 phone I created two contacts.
Turn Forwarding On:
_OnForward
*21*5125551212#
(replace 5125551212 with the areacode and phone number you want to forward your calls to)
Turn Forwarding Off:
_OffForward:
##21#
The _ puts the two items at the top of my contacts list. I click contacts and then press call on the selected forwarding option. Sometimes I get an error message "command not supported", but that is related to my phone's connection strength and not the programming. This has been working well for me for about a year. I have tried to make a couple of buttons that dial the contacts directly from another screen, but that hasn't worked. You have to open contacts and the press call on the option you want.
Later-
Good morning gents.
I have an HTC TyTN II with Win Mobile 6.1
I created the contacts like that and on my "Favorite People" page I put the contact there, it just says :
"Cannot Complete the call. the Signal may be unavailable or the phone number may not be valid. Verify the number or try again later."
From the contact list it works of course.
Another question regarding call forwarding. Is there a way to have an icon on the top bar that says the call ARE being forwarded... I keep missing a couple of calls that end on my home answering machine because I forgot to forward
Vesperatus-
I have all of your same issues. As far as I know, there aren't any solutions. You just have to remember to unforward your phone.....

Searching in contacts

Have a peculiar problem whenever i search for a contact.
i use the phone keyboard with t9.
On a few occasions i get numbers regardless of what letter im typing in, and this is genius because the number 1 gets hit on a-b-c and the number 1 in any number and the letter in any name...
But i cant find å way to figure out how the settings should be for this to be enabled?
This seems to work in the phone log but not for every contact, but as said earlier ive managed to get this function for the entire contact list when fumbling around a bit..
Anyone?

it depends on where the focus(cursor) is, if it on the list then you'll have digits and search in Contacts, if your cursor in TextBox over the list, then you'll have just T9
So this means there is no way to get this function to f.ex in new/reply sms/mms/email ?

why not ? when you click to the address line you'll see the same windows as in Contacts
ohh, got it now, would still be nice if this var standard and you could just type inn the numbers directly without entering the contact list manually like that if you see what i mean
thanks for clearing things up
For the sms thing, it works for me.. but with the name.
I use Full Keyboard (t9 off).
in the TO: field, I enter V and it shows me the first name starting with V.. as I go on.. it matches the name and usually by the third letter, I have the name I was looking for.
I have set suggest words after 1 letter. Doubt it has anything to do with it, though.

able to dial like a blackberry

I woudl like to find an application that woudl allow me to click and dial any number like a Blackberry. That is, from an email, calendar invite, etc.
Same thing then for conference pass codes.
Anyone know of such an app for WIndows Mobile 6.1 devices?
Thanks
You can achieve this most of the time just by pressing call-hardkey if you are somewhere close to a number
I find this rarely works.
There is a setting for recognizing numbers
I want to say it is in the phone options, but I'm not sure. (and dont have my phone with me) but I do remember a checkbox to select for making phone numbers callable (is that a word?) from within sms, emails, etc.
I have looked. I have WinMo 6.1 and there are no options for this.
I wonder if it has to do with formatting?
I looked around and couldn't find the setting either, sorry. I might have been thinking of another device, and I should have checked before posting.
I also have 6.1, and at least in emails and SMS, the phone automatically recognizes telephone numbers and email addresses. tapping on a tel number gives the options of calling, sending a text, or saving to contacts. Tapping an email opens a new message to that address. Having members here from all over the globe made me wonder if country codes outside the US might mess up that functionality. I tried emailing myself some numbers, and when I included country codes, it didn't recoginze the number anymore. I don't know if this helps you or not, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Possibly someone here from outside of the US can tell us if it works for them.

CallBlocker

Very nice, I've been looking for an app like this for a while now. Just input a # you don't want to receive calls from and it will be blocked. Requires root, though.
Sure, you can use the built in "Send to Voice Mail" feature in Contacts, but that's not a good solution because 1) It clogs up my voice mail inbox and 2) I get an almost as annoying text notification every time someone that I have chosen to send to VM tries to call me.
The app is still pretty new, so it's lacking a few features I would like (such as regexp patterns), and I'm not sure it'll block text messages as well (which would be nice), but it's definitely a very good start.

I just downloaded it gonna start putting number in it. Do you know if you can use it to block unknown numbers?
I haven't actually tried blocking my home phone in it to try it out for myself, but supposedly what this app does is to send the caller directly to voice mail, just like the feature that's already available to us in the default contacts app. That's not quite what I'm looking for, as that means I will still get those annoying notifications and the voice mail inbox will (might) get clogged up.
Perhaps what I'm looking for is just not possible, but simply put I want an app that interceps an incoming call/text, cross-refs it against a black list, and if it's a match - mimics a red phone button press (decline)/refuse the text message - all within a few milliseconds. It would also be nice if it stopped the number from getting logged in the call log.

I'm pretty sure that what this application does is to receive the phone call (it may do half a ring) and immediately answer it and hang up. This should avoid the problem of sending it to voicemail.
i have been talking to the dev since release, the callers do NOT go to voicemail so it won't clog your voicemail manny.
also it cannot be used to block Unknown numbers so fo that you would need to write your app(i am trying but it is very hard to do when you don't know exactly what you are doing). but the dev claims that if you put in 1800 in the block box then it will block ALL 1800 numbers that call you. seems pretty good but i haven't been able to test it yet(crazy ex might have finally gotten the hint)
EDIT!! as soon as i posted this i got an update on it and now you are able to choose between unknown numbers or blacklisted numbers, i suggested checkboxes to select both, as well as text message block, but i am not sure how possible that would be

Really? I use the built in feature and I don't get a text when someone on my blocked list calls. It will show up in the call log but I don't get a text or notification unless they leave a VM.
where can i download? please?
I decided to start developing my own version..
^^^That is cool let us know, I am willing to test it. The developer has stopped updating this app.
Good to hear your making a new app. This one bugged me as it wouldnt block 1-800 type numbers..
Yes!
Joey3002 Please post it when completed. I cant find the other app anywhere. If you take paypal donations, I will send some $ after you post it. Thank You!

Question How to get +1 to stop showing up on phone numbers from text messages.

I am having a interesting issue with my phone that I cannot figure out. When I receive a text message the system adds a +1 to the start of the phone number it is coming from, I am using the Samsung Messages application but this does the same thing apparently with the Google SMS app and the Verizon messenger app (as I have\ tried these as well), this only happens with a text and if I get a phone call or look in the address book no numbers have a +1.
The reason this is an issue is because my car imports my phonebook as it appears in the contacts and when I get a text it comes up as Unknown Caller because of the added +1 but phone calls do not have the +1 so they show up just fine.
While working on this I have discovered that if I go to the text by going to my contacts then clicking on the persons name it will remove the +1 and it will stay removed as I text them but the second I get texted back the +1 is added. I called Verizon eventually and was told reset settings, reset network settings, turn off assisted dialing. None of these work and there next solution was to factory reset, I don't think this will help because it isn't just my phone but my wife and son who also got the same phone have the same thing happen.
Has anyone experienced this and know how to fix it. I have been through all the phone and dev settings looking for something. I cannot find any other threads online for this except for a couple from AT&T users from different samsung phones years ago with no answer. Previous to this we were using Note 9's and did not have this issue. Any help is appreciated.
edit: The phone is not rooted or modded and is on Android 11 One UI 3.1, sorry forgot to add that.
I think it's under: Settings -> Call Settings -> Other call settings -> Roaming assistance

That is assisted dialing I turned off already and it didn't affect it. It's also just on text messages phone functions don't have this happen for some reason.
The +1 is your coumtry code prefix (USA).
While you can change this in your messaging app you can't change it from eveyone else's phone.
From using it in your car radio might be somethng in your car settings or else in your contact list add the +1 to all your contacts.

I understand that the +1 is the country code.
It isn't from other people's phones it is the way the Ultra is handling the information when it comes to text messaging. I did the following test. I removed my son as a contact in my phone and called my phone from his. The phone number shows up as (xxx) xxx-xxxx. I then sent a text message to myself from his phone while he still was not in my contacts. I have 3 different text applications on my phone right now for testing purposes (default Samsung, Google's SMS app, and Verizon Messeages) and all 3 shows the phone number as +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx.
The car isn't adding the the +1 to contacts, when my phonebook syncs to the car and I go into it the phonebook on my cars display they show the same as in my contacts "Contacts Name" (xxx) xxx-xxxx but when a text comes in it shows Unknown +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx.
The issue solely lies with text messages being received on the S21 Ultra as this happens when people on Apple phones or Android phones (multiple brands) text me.
In regards to text messaging in general, i live not far from you ( about 9500 miles ) and I have a different device then yours. Receiving text messages from someone in my contacts list shows up contact name. Receiving other text message not in my contact list will show as country code and phone number. There are exceptions to this in regards to texts from government agencies and google which will show up who are not in my contacts list. I think texts messaging work around the international standard ie: country code + phone number while phone calls may not (unless making international calls). So i don't think it's device specific as it more to do with the networks that you connect to.
In regards to talking to you car ( text wise ) i may be of little help as i don't have a android 11 device and a car to talk to.
Since your note 9 works, and as far as i know latest version is android 10, it could be an issue with android 11. From your test using your son's phone have tried to add the +1 to his number to your phone and see if it's make a difference.
