Reset to new - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i rooted my phone using the universal root in this forum, the day after i accidentally updated android and it broke the root, also i have noticed some bugs. I am trying to put the phone back to how it was when i got it in the post. i tried a "factory data reset" but it didnt do what i am trying to do, just deleted all the apps etc. Any ideas how i can do this? I dont mind if i have root access still.
Cheers!

Read my signature, the bigger link. I'm sure you'll find the info on rooting FRG83 there (because I've put it there).

Okay i think i need some help, i have downloaded the official rom an put it on the sd card but cant work out how to flash it, im holding down the track ball and resetting but cant see the option to flash anything, is this because it wasnt rooted properly where android updated?

this sux on an epic scale. when my phone was ****ed.. no one posted with a signature that had information about how to install stuff to phone without unlocking bootloader .
grrr...
dude read the wiki... its all there

Ive been reading this tutorial: /showthread.php?t=614850 but not sure how to run the commands on steps 8 - 13

To make it even easier, these are the words you need to concentrate on looking for:

I supposed my post would say it clearly enough that your idea of restoring the ROM to the older version won't work.

Just managed to root it, then got totally lost, might have to leave it like this..

Yes, that was the idea. Root it, and stay with it. If you post the bugs, they might have solutions / workarounds.
Plus, it might be a good time to try custom ROM Or even customized plain FRF91 you were looking for.

Root for Rookies

Hey Guys
I really hope I'm posting this in the right place. Please forgive my ignorance
For the past few days I have tried to get simple and UP TO DATE instruction on how to root the G1. There is so much information scattered out there that its quite overwhelming. Unfortunately I only understand half of the stuff I'm reading (at best) and was hoping one of you smart folks can help a complete amateur in my desperate quest to get root
Can someone please help me with the following:
1) are these steps for downgrading to RC 29 and rooting still applicable for cupcake?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
2) what does it mean to update the radio, SPL, and ROM and how do I do that.
3) where can I find the latest versions of all the stuff I need?
4) will I be able to reinstall all the apps I've bought as long as sign in with the same email after rooting?
5) will some market apps be blocked for me after rooting?
I realize this sounds really ignorant but would appreciate any help I can get!
Think about how many times a day the same inquiries roll these boards. If you've been reading the boards for the past few days and didn't find the answer to the majority of those questions something ain't right meng. I'm not trying to be funny. I'm just saying. The foundation of everything you may or may not learn is slap dab one of the first posts in this forum.
I'm not going to get into that..but you need to. the answers to all your questions are here in front of you. It just gets frustrating (it was to me at least) at times because you might stumble upon 3 different but totally correct answers to one question. Thats exactly where i was right HERE. that was two weeks ago. jumped on the boards one friday night a wreck, by sunday night i was peacefully rooted. Slow down, think about what your doing and what you're reading. make sure you have some free time...TO YOUR SELF. get a pen and some paper right stuff down. take into consideration you might not make it in a day. yeah u might botch your way to ROOT, but unless you REALLLY understand and know how to get there...you could be setting yourself up for alot of frustration. thats all i have to say about that. you caught me on a good night...just had a glass of wine bout call it quits. sorry about any typos. good luck!

Any recommendations as to what ROM I should install? Not quite sure how the different versions compare.

OUCH! Good looking out.
OP, I followed the instructions you linked to just a few days ago and it worked like a breeze. Much easier that I thought it would, and i have no experience with this. I would suggest that when you get to the final part where you are upgrading to a new ROM to try cyanogen's stable build 3.6.8.1. It is just like cupcake (what you had) with a ton of new options.
also, his pimped out recovery.img can be used... version 1.4. I followed that guide to a T, then learned of this new and improved recovery.img file he made. So, basically the next day I changed to this version and it is a lot better.
Partition your sd card when you finish this and his rom will put all of your apps on your SD card, which frees up a ton of internal memory. I went and d/loaded about 60 apps after doing this. His rom does it for you automatically... like, no thought needed, you want even know unless you go to settings and look at the memory.... or, you may b/c of the speed of your phone. This was also much easier than I though, basically just keying a few lines of text in terminal emulator (which you will have after loading his rom above).
Any of the other experienced people have any issues with what I said?
I would also suggest cyanogen's builds. It has a lot of features and is both relatively noob friendly, feature-packed, advanced capabilities for advanced users, and fast. His 4.0 stable is just around the corner with even more features than his current stable version. There are many other ROM's out there as well, you'll have to try em out yourself and see if you like them or not. (Be careful of the ones that say you need the updated SPL, such as the hero ROM's. If your not careful when updating to that SPL [Haykuro's 1.33.2005 SPL] you could brick your phone. )
Cyan's recovery is a must
its great no matter what ROM you choose to use
If you need anything else, feel free to PM me or post here
This is how I got it to work!!!
(SD CARD READER NEEDED)
Got it to work using this tutorial. If I had found it before I wouldn't have started a new thread. Will look harder in the future!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533731
Followed steps until step 16
After step 16:
I had to install the JesusFreke rom cause it wouldn’t let me flash the cyanogen recovery image otherwise (permission denied problem as mentioned by author)
Installed cyanogen recovery image
I skipped partitioning the sd card at this point cause I didn’t plan on installing the Hero rom. If you want to flash the Hero rom you shouldn't skip partitioning
Installed latest Radio
Installed latest SPL
From here on I did my own thing:
Couldn’t boot after updating SPL cause rom got wiped by updating SPL. I had to put the new rom (Cyanogen v3.6.8.1) onto sd card, rename as update.zip and boot into recovery mode to flash it. This is were the sd card reader comes in handy.
You can find the Cyanogen ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537204
After flashing the rom it was stuck on the loading screen so I rebooted into recovery mode and did a clean swipe. Loaded just fine after that.
Created ext2 partition using Paragon Partition Manager (see threat below), rebooted and was good to go
Partitioning using Paragon Partition Manager:

Thanks again for your help guys!

Ohh lol see I didn't bother reading that ADB guide since I already had adb since pre-cupcake when I attempted to root my phone the first time.

How to get my G1 back on track?

Hey guys,
First of all, thank you for spending time on reading this thread, I really need your help.
I wanted to root my phone (G1) etc. etc. So I downgraded it but didn't like it at all! So I descided to move back up again (latest software version).
I spent hours on the internet searching for software, firmware etc. And I managed to set my phone to RC33 and firmware version 1.1 ... Now my phone is not what it used to be, I guess firmware version 1.1 is kinda old isn't it? Strange enough my phone says it already is fully up to date...
So my question is; could you guys help me out, with getting the latest firmware/software whatever?
Thank you in advance!
Well, what you could do is: Go back to the earliest framework specified in say the cyanogenmod rom, which is RC29. Use that to flash your phone to gain root. It will be very odd looking because it the lowest thing. But then you can flash the awesomness of cyanogen onto it and you'll be good to go.
Also what you said you wanted to root it, so you downgraded. That is but the first step needed. i wouldnt want to stay there either. So yeah follow that guide and you should be on your way.
Although I will admit that it is probably the best running firmware for the G1 thus far!

So in "short" you'd advise me to:
Downgrade to RD29 *again*
Get my phone rooted
And install the cyanogenmod Rom
Is that correct? Now I don't see all the applications on the Android Market, some disappeared, will they return?
In short, yes. I know it seems odd to downgrade to upgrade. But to gain root you have to use RC29. To gain root its not too bad. you have to use RC29 to do it. You just install that. start it up. And then download the app "telnet" from the market. and then run a few commands. from there you can upgrade back up. And yes you should see everything in the market. Yeah its kinda annoying but there are some great results possible.
A more in depth set of instructions is located on the Cyanogen wiki. I cant post a direct link due to my account status but google "how to install cyanogenmod" and its about the 3rd result.

Okay, so here's what I did. I downgraded my G1 to RC29, rooted it successfully. Downloaded the latest cyanogenmod, named it setup.zip, went to recovery mode, did a factory reset and installed the setup.zip. Now my G1 won't get past the load screen (which says G1). What did I do wrong?? I can get still into recovery mode...
Thanks for the help so far!
So I came up with an idea, I need to add a new update.zip how to connect to the computer through recovery mode??

First Attempt at Modding my Samsung Captivate…..

I just got my first REAL smartphone, actually it’s still on FedEx truck.
From reading the stickies on this forum, here’s what I gathered so far (and I am starting from scratch – nothing on my phone yet)
1) Root my phone with the ‘OneClick’ tool.
2) Install ROM (I am thinking Cognition, since it’s recommended for beginner).
3) Install Theme (haven’t decide on one yet) – any suggestions?
So, am I missing anything?
You seem to have a good grasp on what you are doing. I do recommend buying/making a Jig to have around just in case.
You're well on your way.
Make sure and read up on bootloaders and the difference between 2.1/2.2 and 2.3 bootloaders as getting this wrong is the main thing that can lead to "big" trouble.
Also take a look at Odin, Odin One Click return to stock and make sure and know the difference between those and the Odin One Click w/3 Button Combo.
thanks guys, i think i have a good idea of what i want to do but i am still struggling to find the details to do the above.
for example, what difference if my phone batch is 1010, or 1012, or older?
do i need to get an microsd card, if so what size/brand?
what sofware do i need to download?
etc, etc. etc.
i will continue to browse through the forums, but if you know of any links please post.
also, what does the jig do? do i need to have one?
thanks
First decide what u want to do, As u stated first root the phone and then u want a custom ROM, So go ahead and try it.
Only thing i will advice start from a froyo rom then to the gingerbread as there would be less chances to brick your phone while flashing the b.loades.
Read the OP properly of the ROM which you want to flash there are many good froyo rom available here. But just be sure what u are doing.
Please for the love of all things unholy, read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049294
and if the phone comes with froyo you will need this after rooting before flashing a rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
At the start DEFINITE GUIDE TO BRICKING, LOL.
Its just a joke be sure you read it all.

Again i will say read the OP carefully before flashing.
I have a few Captivates in the family and IMHO the first thinkg to do before flashing anything is to purchase Root Explorer in the market (for around $4) then back up your EFS folder (in the main directory) and save it to a cd so you ALWAYS have a hard copy of it. These files are specific to your phone and if they get screwed up during flashing, you phone may not be able to be used as a phone anymore. The back up copy will save you.
All of the above stuff is good. I was a noob about 6 months ago but I spent hours upon hours of reading and watching videos about flashing and moding. Good luck!

the OP is the original post or poster, like your first question is the op, and you are also the op of the thread. in that context he meant the original post, because that will have most of the information about the rom...but i would expand on that to read the op and the a couple of pages in, and also if its a large thread with alot of posts read atleast the LAST 5 or 6 pages also.
anymore terms you are unfamiliar with read the op of this thread carefully: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093062
thanks for clarying.
just got my phone in the mail.
i looked at the batch number under the battery slot and it shows 1106.
does this mean i have version 2.1 or 2.2? what would be the appropriate app/tool for rooting?
thanks
The batch had nothing to do with the firmware....that just means your phone was built in june of 2011. But since it's a new phone it more than likely has 2.2 confirm this in settings>about phone> firmware version.
Use super one click to root.
BUT FIRST PLEASE READ SOME MORE.
All of the information you are looking is already on here at the very least twice probably WAY more.
it is indeed version 2.2
so i read the first page of this thread and also watched the youtube clip. it looks straight enough to root. but i got a question. should i run the universal root or the captivate root?

I would use SuperOneClick to root 2.2, however, the only version that was successful for me was version 1.6.5. The newer versions gave me errors or said FAILED when trying to root. For me, it has always worked with 1.6.5

You should have the driver installed on your computer for anything you do with the phone. Make sure after you install drivers to plug in your phone to the computer in all the different modes it has - in debugging mode, not in debug mode, in download mode, and connecting as an external drive. The computer will install all the drivers when you do this.
I will try to attach v1.6.5 of Super One CLick. I hope it's ok with the moderators here that I am posting the software. Just unzip the folder and double click the android icon in that folder.

[Q] Cannot figure out how to root phone AAAARRRGGG!

OK. I started out this adventure to root my phone because I want to use it as a wifi hotspot for my Ipad and not pay AT&T $50/month for that "privelage." I can't figure it out!!!
Phone Info. - Samsung Captivate with Froyo kb2 build. It has the 2.1 adroid when I got it then I updated to 2.2 through the Keis program when it was available.
Before anyone starts with "read and search" lecture, I'll tell you that I've been on this site for a combined 9 hours reading and searching and nothing seems to work. I've tried one-click root programs, I've installed a rooted version of my stock ROM, Ive downloaded more apps, files, or software programs than I can remember. I know how to get the phone into download mode and I know how to boot into recovery mode, but nothing works. Everything seems to come back to the 3e Recovery I have because when I think I am almost there, I get a failed signature error.
I tried the 3e Recovery Mod and that didn't seem to do anything. Is anyone out there willing to help me through this? I am not a programmer, and I don't have any android experience whatsoever, but I can follow direction and am willing to learn. Everytime I find a new thread I seem to get more confused because I'm unclear on the jargon being used, or the thread is on a different ROM or phone so I don't know if it will work. I know "brick" is a bad thing so I don't want to do that.
I any of the experts had my phone what would you do? Do you need more information from me? Also, once I get this figured out, I'de love some recomendation on a better, faster ROM to install.
ANY HELP WOLD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED. Sorry for the frustration.
When I was on the Official Froyo 2.2 the first thing I used to successfully get root was this... View attachment SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse.zip
This version was the only one at the time that would work. Extract it and run the SuperOneClick application. Be sure to have the usb debugging on.-- Menu /Settings /Applications /Development /then check the USB debugging.
Hmmmm.....very odd. Froyo is super easy.
Do you have Super User showing up in the apps drawer?
AND DON'T USE KIES ANY MORE FOR UPDATING !! YOU CAN BE IN FOR NASTY SURPRISES.
Been there. I'll try it again, but I think it still can't get around the 3e verification stuff. I'll let you know.
No SuperUser as of yet. I guess that is the point. Once I get rooted, I should get SuperUser status.

After u try the SuperOneClick from my previous post, reboot ur phone and then see what u have.
After nearly 9 hours of trying...I have cracked this thing. Turn out there were two threads about the 3e recovery mod. I tried the manual thread with no success. I just found this one that has a one click script to do it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
Once I did that, I used Captivate One Click Root and presto....I now have SuperUser permissions. Sweet.
Thanks to everyone that responded to my questions. I'm sure I'll have more about ROMs and such.
^ Good deal. Glad u got it.

I tried that early on because it looked so easy. All I get is "Sorry, no codes found unknown error" Is there a way to tell if I'm CID unlocked or not? I haven't done that yet that I know of. I did click the unlock button is Super One Click, but it did nothing. By that I mean the program, nor the phone seemed like anything happened. Early on in this process I found the completly rooted version of my stock Froyo 2.2 and installed that on my phone thinking that it would root the phone. Later realized it doesn't work like that. How do I check the CID lock? I'de like to try one of these cool ROM's I keep reading about.
unless you are planning on running the captivate on another carrier, you dont need to unlock it.
I was under the impression that I needed to CID unlock the phone to flash any ROM not produced or signed by the carrier. I thought SIM unlock was what allowed you to take the phone to another carrier?
As you can see, I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm slowly learning.

CID unlocks do not apply to Samsung phones.
once you have a kernel that has CWM built into it, you can start flashing. nothing else required. you dont even need root if you arent planning on using something like titanium backup before you flash.
Cool.
So any recomendations on my first custom ROM install?
I tried installing a custum boot animation last night and had no luck. I used CWM to flash the file I downloaded, but no change. I tried to copy a new customanimation.zip (I think that's what it's called I'm going from memory here) but I don't have RW access to the System folder. I tried using CWM to mount system and then fix permissions through recovery mode, but that doesn't do it. I'm using Droid Explorer to copy the file but it won't copy. There is a customamination.zip file in system/media so I tried to rename it .zp and it won't take. I assume that is a permissions thing.
I guess I'll try Root Exploer from the market. People seem to be having luck with that.
you cant use a bootanimation.zip on a stock kernel. It just be enabled in a custom kernel.
Go read some more bro. A LOT MORE.
OK. so it looks like I downloaded a custom animation zip file, but I need to flash a kernel that allows me to use the anmation. I ran across a post about that so I can find it.
Was was confusing to me was the uploader of the animation called it "flashable" so I thought that was the kernel and all, but I'm now guessing that by flashing it it simply installed it into the system/media folder for me???
Still looking for any suggestions for my first ROM.

HTC VIVID Super User Problems....

So I am a new person and therefor can not post this in the development thread under the forum where I feel it would belong with the other root related questions.... So i followed the SUPER GUIDE to root my phone (Thank you so much Slapshot and PirateGhost, I was beginning to regret not getting a skyrocket until I found your thread). My super user is running into an issue I can not seem to fix.....
Maybe this is simple or maybe I really messed something up....
Basically none of my apps have root anymore (they did at one point and to my knowledge I change nothing...)
When I go to the Super User app to update my binaries and hopefully get any issues resolved I am greeted by the following error message in the update log: "Failed to find currently installed SU binary. Update cannot continue"
Is there a resolution for this? I have not found anyone even running into the same issue on the Vivid.....
A little nervous.... I didnt have near this many issues rooting my ATRIX and modding the living daylights out of that.
Have you checked with Root Checker Basic to see if you even have Root? If you didn't follow the Super Guide step by step your phone could have relocked after you turned your phone off/on.
If it still fails to update you could try SuperUser Update Fixer.
Yes I have check with root checker.
This may be a dumb question but how do I uninstall Superuser? When I go to the typical application management it does not give me the option. I have done an install again to overwrite the files and nothing changed there.
I followed the instructions step by step (though obviously I messed up somewhere...)

Interesting... maybe your root didn't stick. We had a little trouble with that before but pirateghost fixed the CWM ROOT zip. You have a working CWM Recovery, correct?
In the superguide, I have a second option for root in case the first doesn't work. In your case, go ahead and try the second option. The one involving the supertool. That should get you perm root. If that doesn't even work, then we might have to put you back to stock and go at it again.
EDIT: BEFORE TRYING THE SUPERTOOL, try flashing the new CWM ROOT VER2 zip from CWM recovery and see if root sticks.
Slapshot, thank you for checking the General Thread, I really do appreciate that. I have tried both methods multiple times since the root failure seeing as so many people said they had to run the methods multiple times to make them stick (this admittedly may be part of the issue). The most recent one has been the CWM ROOT VER2. Still no dice. Is there a method to remove and re install super user? Or am I reading into the error too literally and instead I just basically do not have root.

No problem. At this point I think you may just not have root... but first, go ahead and go into bootloader (power off, then power on while holding power and vol down). Does your device say unlocked?
*Just a clarification*
You have to unroot your phone to get rid of it Idk why I put uninstall/reinstall earlier...still out there from last night I guess.

Yes the device still says unlocked. That was one of the first things I checked... Haha....
As I said ive flashed the rooted CWM and it says it went over successfully.
If i use the Zerg exploit it still seems to go over successfully (I realize this has a tenancy to mess with internal storage and only provide a temp root but i do not even get that temp root).
How would I unroot my device? Do you mean flash to stock and relock my boot loader?
As I said I have flashed several devices in the past (Atrix, eee pad transformer, HTC Inspire, HTC DINC, SAMSUNG GALAXY S T-Mobile) but I am not completely up to date on all of the technical terms...

Yes, I mean relock the bootloader and back to stock rom, then try again. Do you know how to get back to stock?

I haven't told anyone how to do it surprisingly, and I'm more than happy to help . I was honestly thinking about adding reverting back to stock to the superguide, and I think I just may do that. Here is the link. Pirateghost is the man.

Thank you for this and all of your help, people like you and ghostpirate are why i still feel like I can turn to the XDA community. I will try this firs thing in the morning and give an update on how things went. I would try it tonight but lets be honest, its the 1st of the year and the last thing I need to be doing is messing with technology.....

It's no problem, this isn't a dumb question or easy issue by any means. If the method I directed to you doesn't work, let me know. There is another way to do it without all the code.

Worked perfectly. I flashed it back to stock using the thread you linked me to. Then I did the CWM Root method and so far so good. I appreciate all of your help
Nice, I'm glad you were able to get everything working.
