[Q] What does "apply sdcard:update.zip" do? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I am in recovery mode, what will "apply sdcard:update.zip" actually do if selected, will I lose any data?

It runs the update.zip file found in /sdcard/ Its so you can update things like roms/kernels/whatever that can't be updated while system is running. You don't really need to use it unless you mod/root your phone

Thanks ickyboo I downloaded AudioBooster 2 and it prompts me to do that, just needed to know the implications or in this case there aren't any
Oooohhhh, my 100th Post...

does this mean this was made so that we can root?
why would they do that?

Short term,it's your cwm recovery
It has nothing to do with your root, but it need root to run

Apparently I don't have an "update.zip" file on my sdcard. Would it be beneficial to find one and update? I'm running CM10 stable and have re-flashed it a few time over the last month and a half for various reasons.

All apply update.zip means that it will flash the file called update.zip from your SD card. This is opposed to manually finding the file and flashing it. All you have to do is rename the file to update.zip.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

The update.zip is not one specific file, it's a file created by various programs or yourself to make it easier to update something in cwm...
Basically, if for example your OS wants to update, it offers to download the update ROM and then rename it update.zip, so you then can just select that option in cwm without looking for the file hidden in some weird unknown folder.
If a program like this Audio whatever thing asks you to update with update.zip, it's likely that it has packaged an update for you that'll benefit or be needed for that program or some of its features.
Be aware that since many apps use this exact same feature to update or add stuff, you have to do it (reboot into cwm and apply) on a one-per-app basis; two apps won't merge their files into one.
Hope that helped

Download Linda File manager (which allows you to download any file) and download which ever ROM you want. (For hero roms make sure you have the lastest Radio & SPL) Then copy and paste that rom to the root of your SD card and then boot into recovery and flash away!

When you download the rom it automatically goes to /sdcard/download
Yeah if you're not using Cyan1.4 recovery. Cyan1.4 can update from any zip.

Oh well I'm on Cyanogen Recovery Image 1.3.1 so what do I name it to? And also, what's the difference between JACxHero and JACHeroSki and JACHeroSkiLite and everything? Its confusing! And I'm thinking about getting the MiniHeroROM, do I just download the file to the SDCard and Wipe and Flash and that's all or do I have to type stuff into the Console?
Might want to make sure you have your sdcard partitioned for Hero.

I havent used any Hero builds, and I doubt I will. A bird told me that Flash 10 is coming next month to android.
All of the commands should be in the above link.
I would go the CM 1.4 Recovery, so everything in the future is easier to update with the "Any Zip" feature. Just helps to make sure your updating the right file. great for themes etc... no more hassles with renaming stuff.
Astro you can select a file>edit>move then use the up arrow to go back to the root of your sdcard, then menu>edit>paste ... something like that.
Hope this helps.

[Q] No Market on Custom ROM

Hi,
I have just rooted my phone and Indigo Bean is first ROM I have flashed. I have to say I am really impressed with the speed of the device and the it also looks cool to boot. So big up, thanks for all your hard work.
One thing I cant get my head around though is that there is no 'market' app available? I also tried Azure, which loaded ok and worked a treat but there was also no 'market' app available. Am I missing something? I read something about flashing google apps but cant find anything specific to the HTC Legend.
Thanks guys..
You need to install Google Apps. Download the zip gapps-hdpi-FRF91-2-signed.zip (search the forums). flash the rom, then without wiping flash again with this zip.
Ok, sorry, but I'm not that technical tbh. Have you a link to working instructions etc.
From what I can gather, you are asking me to download that zip file. Then save it the root directory of my SD card. Then reboot into recovery mode and select flash from SD card. then I select the .zip file from the menu and reboot?
Sorry for the noobness, still getting my head around all of this.
If you would read the threads about those two roms you would learn that you need to flash two different files. First the Rom and then the file containing Google apps.

the file can be downloaded here: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=gapps-hdpi-FRF91-2-signed.zip (just google it!)
And yes, flash your rom, enter recovery again (using rom manager), flash zip from sd card, choose the google apps zip (the one you googled above) and flash. Not that difficult!

[Q] ClockPackage on di11igaf's

Issue 1: I'm trying to install ClockPackage.apk, Gallery3D.apk, MyFiles.apk in order to have the stock clock. I keep getting the error "Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES]" when i try to use the command adb install (any of the 3).apk. I have also tried "adb push" which doesn't seem like a valid command. I tried moving the 3 apk files to my sd card on the phone and using "installer" and "eoeAppinstaller" from the market and these fail as well. Any more suggestions? I really like this di11igaf's ROM, but I cannot stand the new alarm ( i like the gradual volume increase of the stock). I have tried a couple of market clocks, but they just didn't work for me. Thank you very much in advance.
Issue 2: If I use CWM and choose Reboot into Recovery i get the following:
Android system recovery <3e>
Samsung Recovery Utils
- for BML -
Enter OK Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
format internal sd card

At this point I can use the volume buttons to scroll up and down, but the power button will not select anything. The only thing I can do is remove the battery and boot the phone back up, which then takes me into CWM recovery v2.5.1.0. I was able to install the di11i add on, but I don't think that I'm supposed to be pulling the battery to get to this point.
Thanks again and sorry about the long post.
Im no expert on this type of stuff but I use di11i roms and I just transfer apk's to the root of the phone through the regular mass storage mode and use root explorer for the rest.Havent had any problems yet.
As for issue 2 is the package a .zip file? If not that may or may not be the problem.
From my own personal experience the 3dapp isn't sign so I can't install it too
System apps are best copied manually into the /system/app folder using app like root explorer. Make sure the folder is in r/w mode.

+1 you can simply use root explorer to copy the apk files into \system\app folder. quick and easy.

It is a zip file and it installed. What concerned me was the process. Should it have frozen up like that and forced a battery pull? Nothing I've read leads me to believe that was proper behavior of the CWM.

I don't have that directory. Are you creating it on the phone and then putting the files into it? I may have not been clear on what I am trying to do. I am trying to do what was posted in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11207089&highlight=clockpackage#post11207089 posts #2515
I just looked into exactly what you were talking about and I got it figured out.It wasnt installing for me either but this is what I did and it works now.
Through mass storage mode I copied the 3 files to the root of the card.
Then I moved the files to the app folder which is inside the system folder.
I use root explorer for the moving.
When you move them into the app folder its gonna ask to overwrite say yes.
After you get everything moved it will work if you go to the app in the drawer.I never actually installed anything but did an overwrite.

u cannot see it in my files. u need to have root access, and something like root explorer.
So it looks like I could have just copied and pasted the files from the sdcard/Clock folder I placed them in to the /system/app folder using Super Manager. I swear I tried that and it failed before I went through all the crappy steps below. Oh well.
Ok this is going to sound pretty cheap, but I didn't want to pay the ~$4.02 for an ap that I was going to use three times. I did find another way. I used Super Manager and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877316&highlight=installing+apk post #3.
So for any other cheapskates out there.
1. Install Super Manager on phone
2. Install ADB on pc
3. Connect phone to pc and copy the three files ClockPackage.apk, Gallery3D.apk, and MyFiles.apk to the sd card. (I just drag and dropped in windows explorer)
4. Use Super Manager to move to /system/app/ and rename the existing file Gallery3D.apk (I renamed it to Gallery3D.old)
5. Use adb to copy the 3 files from the directory in which you originally placed them on the phone to /system/app/
in adb type:
adb shell
su
(accept the prompt on your screen)
cd /sdcard/whereveryoustuckfile
cp blahblahblah.apk /system/app/ (the red from Pirateghost).
6. Reboot
The clock and alarm work fine, but I cannot get Daily briefing option in alarm to work. I get a FC. I did install the "apk add on pack for 5.6" post 3 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897416 , but I dont think Daily Briefing was included in that. Any suggestions? And one last thing - what is the di11iBrowserfix.zip from post 3 of the thread above for? Thanks again to all who contributed.
I got the daily briefing working. Everything is almost perfect, but I would like two things still.
1. Is there anyway to change the tune that is played when you have smart alarm selected? I have a different tone selected, but I think once you select smart alarm it defaults to that new age tone.
2. My alarm goes off, I stop it, but then I have to unlock it before I see the daily briefing. Can anyone think of a way to have the phone unlock when I turn off the alarm. I know it is so insignificant, but it used to do that when it was stock and it was pretty cool.
Come one guys and gals - don't make me figure this one out by myself j/k but seriously I have surprised myself already by getting this far and I really don't have skill or knowledge for the last two things. I'm learning though....slowly.
Thread etiquette
Did I do something wrong here? I got some really quick responses to my questions before, but nothing on my latest. I ask this next question with all seriousness - should I have started a new thread since it's kind of a new topic? No worries either way, I just want to post in the the most effective way. Thanks. BTW, my phone is working great. I'm getting ready to install 6.0 GPS is a little screwy - often has me west of my location by about 30 meters by I attribute that to the phones hardware. Other than that I have no complaints (except for the lame smart alarm tune)

Diablo, I know this totally off topic and I´m sorry, but I´ve just seen your signature and noticed you run di11igaf´s 6.0 on Glitterballs and as I´m not able to post on development yet, here´s my question:
Will I have too much trouble on flashing another kernel over the di11picKle? I was happy with speedmod + jk4... that was the best working config for me so far...
Just keep in mind I´m a noob

Nope. Get the CWM flashable zip, and copy to ur sdcard. Then go to CWM recovery console, and install this zip. Reboot.
But, please take a nandroid backup, and try to avoid OC kernels if u r unsure ur phone can handle it. Phones freeze when tried to oc beyond their capability.

(Q) Unsigned zips/zipthemer/open recovery

So...this question comes from a theming question...but the big question overall is about installing unsigned zips
I have a telus milestone, rooted, with open recovery (via update.zip on the sd card) with cyanogenmod 7.
I found a nice thread on xda about installing cm themes (the minimalist themes..for anyone that cares, hehe) via metamorph and zipthemer
I was advised that zipthemer is the best bet to install the themes since metamorph causes FC's and errors with certain apk's being modified..
So I run zipthemer and get the .zip all ready to be installed/flashed
Here lies the problem...I get to the step to install the zip...it asks me to choose the "install zip from sd card" option from the recovery menu and choose the zip
I don't have that option
I look around and some forums suggest that flashing the cwm/rom manager recovery would give me that option
so i do that...but when i click on reboot to recovery..i see the recovery screen for half a second, then it reboots and reboots back into normal recovery.
ROM manager still says i have cwm recovery flashed
I tried going into recovery, applying update.zip for open recovery (1.46) and that works without a problem..I just don't have an option to apply a unsigned zip (i can apply a zip through the update folder in openrecovery, but it won't let me install the themes)
I also downloaded the milestone cwm zip file from the website and renamed it update.zip and tried to run that....that didn't work either
so basically...what am i missing to get that install zip from sd card option? how do i install unsigned zip files?
and failing that, how can i install that theme zip file?
thanks!
I might be wrong, but I heard that clockwork mod recovery doesn't work on Moto Milestone, I think it has to do with the blocked bootloader, but again I might be wrong...
It would make sense and that is what I assumed...
Also the reason why I don't use rom manager to install roms..can't wait for moto to implement their non locked bootloader policy on all their phones
I hope they do so soon, but I doubt that they will release our bootloaders, they will likely unlocked their newest models as they care about money more than the happiness of customers, and they clearly should care about both, but I guess a little hope wouldn't hurt

Dude, i'm not sure if ziptheme also signs the file... if not, DL from market an APP called ZIPSIGNER. After generate your zip file with zipthemer, run the zipsigner on your file then flash it normally.
Sent from my Milestone using XDA Premium App
wisefreakz - thanks for the suggestion
i'm thinking that would work
however, i found a way around my problem...i manually edited the problem causing the FC on metamorph in the patched xml file and everything works like a charm...
thanks for the help though
Cool... let us know!!!

milestone overclock good
FYI, for future reference, ZipThemer does produce signed zip files by default. The app was created by the same author as ZipSigner, and they use the same code to sign files.

Don't appologize for asking questions-we all need answers to one thing or another
The first thing you want to do is go to the android market and search for Rom Manager. You already have this installed if you are running CM7, but you need to update it to the newest version.
Then, Just open your app drawer and open up Rom Manager. When it opens, the very top line says "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery". Tap on that, choose Nook Color, and it will update to the newest version 3.2.0.1.
Hope this Helps!

Ok, thanks! So you can indeed copy the files as-is.. with Paleolithic dos 3.2 origin, I tend to expect you need to use special app to copy the system files. In any case, I've installed the boot menu on SD card so by defaults I boot internal flash. No need to lose sanity removing the easy-to-lose usd card.. I can also start the recovery from internal flash..

Yes, I have updated a couple times by just transferring the updated files onto my bootable CWM card. I have done a number of back-ups and restores without a problem. The files are self-contained file systems, so not much damage from a simple transferring of them. If you want to install a special app for windows to be able to update the SD card in the future, then I would download this very handy tool, ImDisk, it will allow windows to mount the updated img file and extract the files from it.
