HTC HD7 vs. Samsung Omnia 7

Should I replace my HTC HD7 pre-order with Samsung Omnia 7? Help needed fast ...
I need your help fast!
I know this is little "unethical" but after so many "copy-paste" reviews I must turn for your help.
Please give me a reason NOT to replace my HTC HD7 pre-order with Samsung Omnia 7.
I pre-ordered HD7 but I am slowly getting disappointed reading all the reviews.
Why?

- HTC HD7 has old TFT LCD ( not even SUPER TFT) vs . Omnia 7 latest Super-AMOLED LCD TFT.

- Display size , HTC HD7-4.3 vs Omnia7 - 4.0 (0.3 difference)
- Weight 162g vs 138g
- HD7 Crappy pink photo and video vs Omnia 7 Check yourself.
- HTC HD7 Battery 1200 vs Omnia 7 1500 .
- HTC HD7 Quiet and Mono (not stereo) vs. 20% louder Omnia 7
- For S. Omnia7 , Gorilla protection is very much possible but cant find a clear confirmation.

could always replace the crappy class 2 micro sd for a higher speed and capacity, but it seems like you want someone to blame if you dont like the phone you choose.

The only thing the HD7 has over the Omnia is the larger screen. And the possibility to remove memory and add more, but you stated you don't need it. IMO Omnia is the better pick.

I think for most people in the long run (regardless of whether they agree at this point in time) the decision will come down to "can you survive with 8GB space?"
The omnia 7 is maxed out at 8GB currently (16GB still yet to be seen) and once you take into account the WP7 OS and apps, you will be left with around 6GB space.
Is that enough for what you'd like to do with the phone?
Personally I won't be using my Omnia 7 as a mp3 player but if you intend on using it as your primary music player then I would STRONGLY recommend the HD7 over the Omnia 7
You can easily upgrade the HD7 to 32GB with a higher class microSD card to improve the speed..
If, like me, you don't mind carrying only a few favourite albums and a few favourite videos and no more then go for the Omnia 7.
If you anticipate that you will use more than 6GB then get the HD7.

Why do you need a excuse? With the things you've stated, its obvious that you want the omnia... just get it

Yes, I need like 2 gigs max for all my multimedia needs. ( 10 or 20 mp3 albums max)
I have never ever watched any movies on mu mobile. Just few South Park`s and that’s all…
I do a lots of browsing, remote desktop, business applications.
I had in the past HTC diamond 1 and now Diamond 2.
HTC D1 had 4GB onboard while HTC D2 had sd card. (Class4)
The difference is huge.
I do know how to handle a screwdriver but why should I do that in the first place.
I did that with all my HTC`s but with a good reason…
Anyway, what about the total experience.
Why Dolby ? With 1200 battery? Or dual flash with that crappy picture?
And it’s the same problem that is going on for years.
Thin plastic for protection?
The video for SD card replacement shows how fragile this phone is.
One angular drop and …
I think that this time HTC failed on the big picture.

if you do a lot of web browsing then the HD7 will have better battery life. SAMOLED is only better for battery consumption if the screen is darker.. web pages tend to be white.
but if you think that the omnia 7 feels better and really dislike the HD7 and you don't need ample space, get the omnia 7. but have you held the HD7? it feels nice man! very good build quality!
the omnia 7 is really popular and it's showing as out of stock at quite a few places so good luck finding one

I think that’s why they have a stronger battery that will do for 18 hours without any problems.
Anyway, the feel is not what I am worried about. I am sure that is ok.
Plus, Omnia is thinner, lighter ( almost 20%!) plus made from metal.
It’s the overall build quality that worries me a lot..
Anyone who dissembled HTC knows what I am talking about. Look at that video.
That is not industrial engineering.
Everything is cheap on that phone. I can’t recognize HTC build quality.

I also was pretty much 100% sure I would never be able to survive with 8GB of storage, I needed 32GB ideally and 16GB at a stretch. Because of this I decided to get the HD7 over the Omnia 7, After just over a week of owning it I returned it and got a Omnia 7 instead. I still have tones of space left too, I set all my photos to auto-upload and I subscribe to Zune Pass so can stream all the music OTA, works very well.

<<this... I just made the point that performance could be improved with some DIY, you've made you mind up that the Samsung is a better fit for you, go buy one.
But as per a previous thread you started there currently is no VNC client, so don't expect to be doing remote desktop on either handset for a while.
As to the memory ok the trophy took 4 seconds longer to boot (all my HTC phones have always taken an age to boot) and 7 seconds to load the game, but is it really that bad? A faster card would improve app loading but I doubt very much that the OS loading would improve as that's in nand or at least I'd assume else you wouldn't be able to boot the handset with a new card.
Sorry about my initial response, but it still feels like you are here to praise up the Omnia7 while trolling the HD7.

I believe you are the only one that had both of them.
Can you confirm "Gorilla" screen and throw in some more comparison info?
Battery life, signal straight etc. Whatever you think it’s a valuable to know!

the HTC is solidly built and looks really classy
the samsung is a bit of an ugly lump

No no, I returned the HD7 because the build quality was woefully lacking, imo there was no way that thing would last for 18 months. I don't know about the whole Gorilla screen but I'm not going to start scratching it to find out
Battery life is better, but not by a massive amount, I would estimate probably a day and a half of heavy use.
Other things I have noticed, games and apps load a hell of a lot faster, the only advantage my HD7 had to my Omnia 7 was the double storage, the Omnia is much much better built, has a far better screen and is faster too.

sorry, the build quality on the HD7 is excellent
the screen is glass
the band round it is smart and makes it feel sturdy
the back is soft and lovely to hold and pretty firm. A new battery back can be bought from HTC in any event.
in terms of the speed, I simply don't believe you. I think some reverse justification is going on here. My HD7 is the fastest phone I have ever used

what plastic on the hd7. I played with one yesterday for about 30minutes, it's a solid metal feeling phone.

The back is made of soft touch plastic, something I prefer over shiny metal. And the phone build quality is excellent. It feels as strong as Iphone 4, which also means you don't want to drop the phone because the screen is also of glass.

When I said it is faster I meant at loading apps and games, it is much faster.
And as for the build quality I guess its slightly subjective, but I would say if you have only had it for a couple days wait till you have had it for over a week. The hardware buttons on my one were truly awful, the have no click to them and I would press the camera and volume buttons all the time without even realising.
The back plastic was marked after 1 week by the case I was sold with it from the O2 store, and the black plastic back is not as sturdy as the full metal back of my Omnia 7.

I don't notice any difference in the buttons between this and other HTC phones to be honest.
I use an HTC case and its fine. A bad case can mark any phone.
A metal back will be more sturdy, sure, but I have no complaints about the HTC HT7 one

Incredible S Review: 3 days In, So Far So Good

If you are only into the latest and greatest hardware, and have to have dual core CPU's, this is not for you!
If you are actually interested in this phone, hopefully this will be of some help
Form Factor & Appearance
First off, this phone feels great in the hand. I don't have particularly large hands, and the Desire HD felt a bit too big, but this is perfect. It's nice to hold in landscape in two hands, or to use in one handed operation. The materials are nice and expensive feeling, very strong and sturdy construction, and it has enough weight to feel expensive without being heavy. The soft touch rubberised back is comfy to hold in the hand (even with the big ridge). From a looks perspective, to me it is a very attractive phone (from the front it looks like an iPod touch without the home button), very clean lines with almost the entire of the front being taken up by the 4" screen. The 4 capacitive buttons are accurate and responsive, and the rotating feature is a nice touch. They are completely invisible when not lit, which gives the phone a very clean appearance when the screen is off.
Screen - 4" SLCD
Let me start by saying yes, next to an AMOLED or a SAMOLED the colours do not 'pop' as much, but it is in my opinion a lot clearer (this may not be true of SAMOLED+ as that no longer uses pentile, but I have no way of comparing). In short it is a very nice screen. It is crisp and clear, and the colours are accurately represented to my eyes. Pictures and videos are sharp and pleasing to look at, and I have read for an hour on the Kindle app without problem. Games like Angry Birds look bright and colourful, but blacks are deep enough to not distract when watching a movie in the dark.
Horsepower - 1GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon & 768MB RAM
This thing is snappy. I am beginning to wonder what this dual-core noise is about as this phone literally flies through screens without a hint of lag or stutter. Whether it be browsing the web, playing games, adding contacts or using the sat-nav, I have not noticed a single hint of slowdown. I used a wide range of what I would consider to be fairly hardware intensive apps, including Angry Birds, Raging Thunder, Asphalt and CoPilot all of which ran without a hitch. For the benchmark junkies it linpacked ~ 38 MFLOPS, Neocore'd ~ 57 FPS and Quadranted ~ 1700.
Storage - 1.1GB Internal App Storage & 8GB Class 4 SDHC (Bundled)
Although I would like all internal storage, I am happy with the current arangement of > 1GB app storage and microSD cards. 1GB is more than enough for me, and I am planning to add a 32GB Class 10 microSD at the end of this month (here is the cheapest I have found if you are interested). Some may find this OK, some might want all internal storage, matter of personal preference really.
Cameras - 8MP Rear facing inc. Dual LED Flash & 1.3 MP Front Facing
The camera on the back is one of the nicest Android shooters I have had the privilege to use. Pretty sure it is the same as the one on the Desire HD, it takes clear crisp and bright pictures, the auto focus and face detection working quickly an accurately, and the time between being able to take photo's is very minimal (even when tested with a crappy Class 2 SD at 8MP!). The LED's provide very harsh, bright and unflattering lighting, but as no one appears to want to put a proper Xenon flash on an Android phone, it's the best we can get . They do however make for an excellent flashlight, and can be used with video recording. The camera can record 720p footage at 30FPS, and is pretty standard fare, while you won't be recording the next hollywood blockbuster on it, it is more than good enough for your next YouTube masterpiece of "Guy falling off skateboard" . The zoom level is not fixed for camera recording either, which is a nice feature to have.
The front facing camera is bog standard, good enough for video calling, and works well as a pocket mirror.
Battery - 1450 mAh
The battery life on this surprised me, especially after the Desire HD. HTC seemed to have learnt from their mistakes as this phone can get through more than 24 hours with fairly heavy usage. Might take a few more days to get a more acurate idea of how it will last, but I am pleasantly surprised
Other Notable Features -Notification LED, Dual Mics & FM Radio
An annoying feature missing from the samsung and Motorola phones, HTC have included a notification LED on the Incredible S (much to my delight). A small feature, but a much needed one and worth noting IMHO. The dual mics for noise cancellation work well and are a welcome feature, and something some have been phasing out is the FM radio. It hasn't been turned off yet!
And now for the cons...
This phone isn't without it's downsides. If I were putting together a list of improvements...
Better loudspeaker - the loudspeaker is very weak, and could do with improving.
Xenon Flash - Missing from all Android phones IMHO
Dedicated Camera Button - I don't see why people keep missing this simple yet much needed feature
Mini HDMI Port - It includes DLNA support, but a mini HDMI port would have been nice
Conclusion
HTC say this phone sits between the Desire S and the Desire HD, but I beg to differ. To me this is a Desire HD 1.5. Not a revolution of the flagship, but a marked improvement in several areas. The change in design and the slight shrink in screen size make it more comfortable to hold an easier to sit in the pocket. The smaller screen also helps the larger battery to fix the major flaw in the DHD, and the front facing camera makes the phone relevant n a world where video calling is trying to become popular (again, am I the only one who had a video mobile phone 8 years ago?!). I would recommend this phone to anyone looking for an upgrade now, unless you want to wait for the dual core craze to begin.
This phone was purchased at Carphone Warehouse on Vodaphone, 24 Months @ £30 with 500 min, unlimited texts and 500MB internet (free phone).
Note: I actually got this phone for my Fianceé as she was due an upgrade. She had a Samsun Pixon M8800 and she thinks it's the best thing in the world ever, and hasn't spoken to me for two days as she has been too engrossed in it . I am seriously considering one as an upgrade from My Hero, and will probably have my own before tomorrow is finished. I will upload some pics of the device, and sample footage and pics from the camera when I get the chance

Can you confirm AWS band on the Incredible S?
GSMArena used to have a 900/1700/2100 HSPDA band spec for this phone, but has now changed it to 900/2100.
I want to import for T-Mobile USA, but need to know if it supports AWS.

Great review, I have exact same deal from Carphone as you, and i am delighted with the phone, it is truly awesome. I agree with everything you said, except I am not so sure about the battery life. Mine has not had a great deal of use today, but its been off charge for only 12 hours and I reckon it will need to go on the charger pretty soon if I do a bit of surfing this evening. Cheers

I'm also planning on buying it handset only as i'm on an amazing phone plan and i'd rather get lower line rental than the free phone! Prices i've seen are around £480-£500... not yet sure if it's worth that.

Much better than those plastic phones i.e Samsung Gal S & Neux 2. The screen will get fingers prints (as per most phones) but the back is covered in a rubber coating which is nice to grip and leaves no prints, unless the fingers were covered in grease in the first place
Note: CPW £449 pay as you go.... Their phones are unlocked. I know cos I have brought my last 3 handsets inc the HTC Incred S from CPW

Totally agree especially given that HTC market this as being 'in between' the Desire and the Desire HD. Should it not therefore hold an in between price tag too?

I personally use the headphones and don't use the loudspeaker, but I can see it being a turn off if it is important to you. I don't mind it for watching a youtube video and turning on SRS helps, but it is still pretty tinny. I wish I had a DHD to compare to so I could let you know how it matches up, but I don't know anyone with one

Well from my short time with both devices I can say that neither are great but the DHD seemed marginally better to me. That said, I spent a good few days with the DHD in different ambient conditions whereas I spent minutes with the Incredible S and was only able to listen to the audio supplied on the phone which to be fair is a poor example.
I don't want to listen to music on the phone but as I say, watching video's / clips the tinny sound is very grating. Seriously considering getting one on an 'able to return' basis though to see if I can put up with it as this phone seems to have everything else I want.
Maybe someone else with this and the DHD will be able to comment on the speaker comparison?

Any info on how it handles video codecs? I assume out of the box it will not play avi / divx?
Presume such apps as Vplayer / QQPlayer and Rockplayer will let you play a full sized avi with no fuss though and remain in sync throughout?

I found that it does actually play some avi files without the likes of rockplayer; however when using rockplayer it seems to be flawless, though sound is adequate rather than amazing via loud speaker, ear phones is perfectly acceptable.

The battery performance on the incredible actually sounds bloody amazing according to your review! The DHD 1230Mah battery is it's weakness point. I am in a dilema on which to get...
Like you said though, it isnt a MAJOR upgrade. So should i get the DHD for a worse battery but for a cheaper £389 compared to £499?

Thanks for posting this review and the follow-up. I'm looking at getting this phone instead of the DHD because of the poor battery life and the uni-body design of the DHD.

Would you agree that the HTC Titan is the HD7 replacement?

Seen a number of websites suggest its a direct replacement. Is it do you think or is it just because they are both large screened WP7 devices made by HTC? As the HD7 is getting Mango anyway for owners of this device I am not sure how much of an upgrade for them the Titan is.

Yeah I would say it is the direct replacement. Looking at the specs you get:
- 0.5 inch bigger screen, but no improvement in resolution
- 1.5ghz processor vs 1ghz
- double the battery life
- Point 'n' Shoot quality camera (according to the marketing)
What I really wanted though was an AMOLED screen.
I'll certainly check it out in the shop and compare directly to the HD7.

I would say its replacement for it, but I dont think its worth an upgrade yet, I will wait to see what new phones come out afterward.
Besides I cant go from a 32gb HD7 to a 16GB Titan

I will wait for the Nokia phones to come out next year though
as Nokia does better hardware so I believe
for me the main reason would be the camera as 5MP in the HD7 is not up for me, so hoping to bump it up either 8mp or 12mp
Also all future WP7 will have a front facing camera and skype coming soon as well so that's something to consider.
VERDICT : Titan is a good UPDATE not an UPGRADE I would say
I guess the best bet would be to wait for next year and see what NOKIA really brings to the table as the HD7 will be just fine untill then as it really rocks MANGO, I don't feel the need to change it yet

I thought so, but what has me thinking is that it still hasnt been anounced for TMO USA yet.... and according to this LINK there is gonna be a device named HTC Bresson running Windows Phone released and no mention of Eternity/Titan...
Im curious to see what this "Bresson" could turn out to be... (plus 4.7 is streching it when it comes to size IMO expecially since WP7 has such a minimilistic UI, so such a big screen is unnecessary)

The fact that they haven't increased the resolution on such a large screen seems something of a poor move, as I would think it would lead to a pretty grainy screen?

To me the Titan will be the next device for me as soon as it comes out in the UK, the only issue I have is that I have got used to having the stand on the back for watching films on the train, I will miss not having that.

You guys forgot to mention that this thing has a FFC as well. This would be a must have for me but all indications are that it is going to AT&T and that us folks at T-Mobile are getting the lesser HTC Omega.

Wait.. What??

It's worth the wait, Titan is good but I would rather go with an amoled screen. Hope that Samsung will bring one like the SGS2 has, who knows or maybe I'll wait for a nokia one, atleast I am sure they will be using carl zeis optics on their cams.

Yeah, I'm hoping that the rumored 4.5in Samsung will come to T-Mobile since it looks like we won't be getting the Titan. Anyway, why haven't we heard anything from Samsung about thier new WP7 devices??

According to this article, at least as far as the European market is concerned, they are only releasing one mid-range WP7 device.

There is no mention if the North American market will do any better. So unless Nokia produce something interesting my attention is focussed on the Titan at the moment.

Apparently the resolution is down to the OS limitations. The screen of the Titan is "only" 1 cm bigger in the diagonal, and will not affect the resolution of the screen for you to notice.

But I would argue that 4.3" inch screens are right at the limit for this resolution, let alone going that bit bigger. It's why we are seeing increasing numbers of devices with screens around this size or slightly bigger using a higher resolution than this.

Thanks for the quick reply! In the link you posted the camera is only described, there are no details about pictures taken with it. I want to know if pictures are really that good, or if it's just another marketing-thing...

there doesnt seem to be any official reviews yet with actual pictures taken on the phone, all that is said is that its only 4mp camera but the resolution is meant to be much better and lets a lot more light in than previous htc phones

HTC camera's are usually decent, can't wait for a real review!

Hello guys first of all may I just say I don't expect anyone to trust me especially without my own evidence (I would have had some if this crap bb didn't die on me while I was down oxford street).
However though after seeing those images vs the iphone btw I thought the images on the one were better than the iphone but inferior to the lumia 920. I decided to hunt the one down again to do some camera tests.
On tuesday on the launch of the one, i went to phones 4 u oxford street (bond street) played with the one for about 3 mins and decided it was better than the z, had better audio, camera/video which is the main things i use on the phone. however that was without side by side comparison.
after seeing the images online posted by the one, i was thinking to myself when i played with it the images looked better than that, so i headed down the whole of oxford street from tottenham court road to bond street in and out of carphone warehouse, three stores and phones 4 u and vodafone like a mad man. finally I went back to the phones 4 u that did the launch and as I walked in i saw they had the one on display however it is bolted down, with both cameras and headset jack covered, so i was disappointed as i though i wouldnt be able to do camera tests. Absolutely gutted i walked out and futher up the road to the three store (opposite selfriges).
walked in and saw they had a dummy of the black version of the one, i asked the staff to they have the real phone one said the rep came earlier and will be back tomorrow about 9am, i thought damn man then one of the staff said hold on ill check if we have the demo phone in the back. She said by the way it is a pre production unit and not final retail unit, anyway she went in the back and came back an there in her hand was a silver one, totally deprived of any restrictions what so ever, so i got a feel of the phone its far better to hold in the hand than the z due to it being smooth (the egdes of the z are rough), also feels and looks smaller than it is and it looks thinner than 9.3mm aswell.
I know audio is better than the z so i got straight to work in comparing front and rear cameras on both phones side by side. I got the staff in the three store to judge which has the better camera aswell.
these are our findings and truthful findings. z was on superior auto setting and one was on its normal auto focus setting i didn't tamper with anything else.
sharpness, colour accuracy (more natural colours), auto focusing and camera speed all favoured the one not to say the camera on the z is rubbish but The z tended to lose focus on objects (same issues that plagued the xperia s/t last year that annoyed me so much) and also letters looked more blurry on the z (i got one of the booklets and was focusing on the letters, the one was far sharper than the z and even just on general objects the one had the sharper camera.
Video (both phones were in 1080p mode on auto focus setting) again was the same story the z was struggling to focus at times, while the one always maintained focus and showed the sharper image and better colour accuracy also better audio aswell.
Even the front camera had clearer more detailed images and videos than the xperia zs front camera, also i tried zooming on the rear camera of the one again it showed more detail on zoom than any other phone I have seen bar the Nokia N8, 808, Lumia 920.
Personally in my opinion and the guys in the three store the camera on the HTC one is remarkable the staff in the three store didn't even know the one only had a 4mp camera they thought it was 13mp it was so good.
This is one of the reasons I rather go hands on with things myself than look on the internet or at reviews and I am urging people to do the same.
You will be surprised about this ultra pixel 4mp camera thing today really showed me and the three staff that its really not all about the megapixels because the ones 4.3mp camera was overall better than the xperia z's 13.1mp camera.

Not now, hahahahaha. Needs a better model

I went to three store at oxford street and pretending to know nothing about HTC one and a black sales person told me it comes with 16 gb and I disagree but still he keep saying its 16 gb but when I denied he went backdoor and come after 7 min. (dumbo) after some quick research on the net or ask senior employee and confirm its a 32 GB
never ask for any advice or technical stuff to people working in store, they can advice you on only one thing how many model of certain phone they sold and how many and which brands models they got in for repair as faulty full stop

Get a compact camera / DSLR if you want great daylight photos.
It is an extra piece to carry, but its worth it. I´d never go on vacation without my (or my parents) dslr if i know there will be some beatiful places

Yes i am thinking about that option still too..

Or maybe its an option to show what the htc one can do...
But the daylight pics of the samsung are good.

Compact camera is the way
I somewhat compared my friend s4 and my One, in full daylight scene
I can absolute say that the real touch to focus of One is clearly superior than s4 fake touch to focus ( like all samsung i owned,they focus in the touched point,but only aprox)
Also the suoeramoled screen can mask somehow your eyes and photos seems brighter and more vivid.. But on pc.. The one capture more color due to more light
Maybe you also have to adjust a bit exposure, or use hdr to make good photos
So apart for maybe little better detailed photos, the change is not a good idea
Things changes if you think to crop or print them in very big papers..
Return back to One after holidays? Lol no..
Get a good camera instead and use it for years and years..

And dont forget that can acquire like 300% more light, making low loght picture really better.. Who said very sunny day?
My think is
High sunlight, s4 can be better for details( but just a little) but also one can make awesome photos, for sure they are ok for record a nice moment
The rest is a favor of One, low light conditions, better video, awesome audio and zoe
Hope i clarified something not driving your decision in a bad road

If you can really trade back, then why not? The S4 will give you better pictures. If buying a standalone camera is not an option, and you can return to the better phone (the One), then why wouldn't you use what would give you the best picture?
It's a straight forward answer, considering the S4 has a better camera, why ask for people's opinion?

Pick which one you want. They are both great phones. Don't base your opinion on others, seriously. No one here has "the answer" and no one here can tell you which one is right for you. You will get mostly people here that say One, and mostly people in the S4 section would say S4. Niether is a bad choice, that is for sure.
I tried both and the decision was the One hands down. My one formed a huge group of dead pixels and I had to exchange it last night, I spent some more time with the S4 while I was there and it solidified my decision in the One.
As far as pictures go, it is negligible at best. Lets be honest, they BOTH SUCK! . They are great ONLY in the mobile camera department, but the cheapest of point and shoot camera's would wipe the floor with both of them. Both of them have pro's and con's compared to each other in taking pictures and there will be some times 1 will take a better picture and other times the other will. That is about it.

And think about the maximum brightness of the s4 display in the sun.
You wont be happy with it, thats sure.

Why does another one of these topics have to be made? There is plenty of threads and even articles on the matter. Even photos up against each other.

Buy an used S4 on ebay or swappa in good condition and with all accesories and original box try both phones for a while and then sell back that smartphone you decided won't to keep, at the end you'll probably won't spend as much money as buying a compact camera.

if i want to take better pics i would buy an actual camera
