[Q] Internal Memory and Hard-reset HD7 - HD7 General

The first generation of WP7 devices have internal storage. I'm wondering what happens to all my songs and videos if I ever had to hard reset the device. Does the device know to save that info or does it erase everything?
Still balancing the pros and cons before I dive into the WP7 world.

it erases everything, i had to do this because i had issues with the htc apps not updating and accidently deleted the updates and then they wouldnt uninstall. so yes it does erase everything

set it up to wirelessly sync, leave your pc running over night put your phone on charge and in the morning the music will be back, not idea but at least you don't have to wait for it.

Thanks! @j1mmyg88
Similar to the iPhone!
As much as I'm excited about the new WP7 OS, I almost want to try out the HD2 instead since they're practically the same phone anyway.

I still would have to tell it what files to sync in addition to re-download whatever games, applications and such from the Marketplace.
If they allow for a storage card slot, all my files would be there already. That actually hurt my feelings.

sms taking 5 mins to open!! PLZ HELP

Ive been having some problems with my tmo wing lately in terms of extreem lagging. Ever since I have used pocket mechanic to defrag my storage card, everything went to sh1t on my phone. I cant boot my phone with my storage card in the slot or it will just reset when it gets to the green windows mobile background. And most importantly, whenever I open "Messages" on my phone, it takes honestly 5 or more minutes to open, then another 5 to open sms/mms then another 5 mins to open/reply to a sms. My program memory is usualy always ATLEAST over 10MB and I had batery status running and while i was opening these windows at the task bar it showed it was using 0% or minimal processor usage, so im assuming that it's not executing properly... does someone have a fix for this? can someone help me out? because to temporarely fix the issue i have to reboot the phone... thanks!

Here's something you should try.
Remove the card then insert it into a card reader at your computer. Copy everything on it and then format the card using FAT16.
Now back-up everything possible on the phone. (in your case this could take a while). Place the back-up file on the computer, if you use the card for back-up reformat it again after you complete the process. Then hard reset the phone and check to see if it still has this problem. Place the empty card inside the phone and try to copy some stuff to it. If everything is ok, restore your files using that back-up you just made. Check to see if the problem manifests now. If it does, clearly there is something rong with your program configuration and you may want to reinstall all your programs manually.
If the phone still runs slow after a master reset you should try to rewrite the phone's ROM as a last resort option. (your back-up copy woun't work after this). If it still runs slow even after this, then... well that's bad. It's something I call "the dead slow card problem". I've tried to find a fix for this for about 3 years on different htc products, but with no succes. The good part is that there's a very small chance this can happen in the normal every day usage. Try this things first and tell me what happens.
wow... Before i even attempt this surgery, i just want to say thank you very much for taking the time to write all this. it's very appreciated.
Before i try all this, i got a few Qs.
What do i use to back up my stuff on my device? or do i just copy paste important stuff... if so what about extensions and associated files...
And what involves a hard reset? does it effect the registry tweaks that i have done? in the end... what will be reset?

I really appreciate ur help! ive done as u said and everything seems fine now... my phone is now back to scratch, which im happy with so I can start fresh and avoid all that junk I had on before... THANKS FOR UR HELP! UVE BEEN GREAT! A+

microSD problem?

Ok no idea how this happened so I'm sorry I can't say exactly what went wrong. Last night I noticed that for some reason none of my mp3s were showing up in the library. Was out with some friends so just went on with my night until I tried to use PocketCM Contacts. Some reason it wouldn't load and I had to uninstall it and switch my softkey back to standard contacts. Latter on I realized that everything on my storage card was somehow gone.
In settings - memory it still shows the same amount of file space taken up on the card and I have tried removing it a few times and resetting.
If it's all gone that's ok because I have copies of all the programs I had installed. Only problem really is that I don't think I have the mp3s on my computer.
Was just wondering if this has happened before and if there is a chance the files are still there since the space on the card is still used. I also plugged the phone into active sync and it also shows nothing on the card.
This is a common problem and there are lots of things that cause it. Primarily, it is installing programs on your SD card, and leaving them running and your phone hibernating.
Typically when this happens, a simple soft reset will fix the problem... but I always suggest keeping up to date back ups of your SD card in order to avoid losing all your data.
I'm in a car at the moment using internet sharing on my phone, so I'm not going to find you all the links, but run a search on the site for "Corrupt SD Card" or "disappearing SD card" and you'll find lots of info about it.
Thanks man. Since I lost all my programs I think I'm gonna reflash the phone too. Want to try touch-it out.
man it has happened to me like 3 times on my wing. the first time i soft reset my phone and it worked. The next time i deleted my documents folder because it was showing 2 of them and i lost everything. I formatted the card and it messed up again this weekend. I ended up flashing to the touch it rom yesterday to see if it would make my phone more stable because i read that it might be the phone making my card act up.
I searched for ways to fix it and downloaded programs but they didnt work because my SD wasnt recognized by the programs. I lost 400 songs and ringtones and videos the first time and 500 songs the next. I have all the songs on my cpu but i made them all smaller to save space and that took a while. I dont even feel like putting anymore music on there because i might end up losing it all again.
Just keep contant backups of your card in case it happens... I bought a USB 2.0 card reader Stick thing for like $20... so I can copy files back and forth faster than thru activesync.

All SMS, 3xemail accounts & messages MIA

Really wierd.
Vario III ran out of batteries yesterday, (not the 1st time this has happened) and so I left it plugged in to re-charge.
On powering up, all the SMSs had been deleted (Sent & Inbox)
My 2 POP email accounts were not there either.
Windows Live account (Unused) had gone too.
The only change was two apps had finished their trial (FFFriends and FunContacts), neither of which have a messaging element.
The attachments folder on the SD card is still there.
The memory usage on the phone hadn't changed, so the data is probably still there.
Anyone else experienced anything similar?
Any way of extracting the old SMS to a text file (or even restore!) - they contain receipts for London Congestion charges etc - would be nice to retain.
Update:
Re-creating the email account did not come up with "This account already exists" - which is what I was expecting, so it looks like they have gone for good.
Spoke to Jahn (FFFriends Developer) and I'm happy it's not the cause (never really thought so).
Has anyone else had a message wipe-out on WM6?
I never let the battery drain to 0%, so i can't say. It shouldn't delete anything, because when you power the device off, nothing is gone either.
No, it's a wierd one.
I've taken the opportunity to re-build it from scratch - (removing a lot of rubbish!) fortunatly I have all the CAB files on my SD Card.

Not had this myself but others have mentioned problems with a corrupt message store which could have probably been caused with your low battery. This can even disable messaging altogether as it gets stuck trying to load faulty data.
Only suggestion I can make is use a backup package at least once a week. Most of us business users are relying on our devices a lot now and it is only sensible practice to do the same as you would on a PC.
Sprite or Spb software can be configured to do an automatic backup of your most needed files either internally to the SD card or to the Activesync PC AND even to a Network drive.
Soz, I know this is closing the door after the horse has bolted (you have already re-written the accounts so data recovery is going to be impossible) but it may help in the future.
I had Sprite backup from start-up (provided on T-Mobile CD), forgot to install it again after 1st rebuild (once I found what I liked etc), and forgot to re-instate it -Dohhhh
Nightly backup re-instated.

Always best pal. Have a good Xmas and New year..
EDIT: MS thought that a non-volotile memory would solve all our problems on mobile... But! we are still held to a battery that can fail and if that happens on a write process, then.... The 'Kaiser' is not perfect on battery, but for a multi-function device, its not TOO bad. I have had Motorola's that barely lasted a day (Razor as an example with BT on). Always best to take maximum precautions depending on what you have on the device..
Charge mine every night just like an alarm clock at the side of my bed..

[Q] Can I transfer everything from one HD7 to another?

So I have an HD7 which I've filled up with many files (media), games and apps. I've also spent a lot of time configuring apps and progressing in games. My g/f just bought a new HD7 to use temporarily however her seems to be a better physical build than mine. Her power button actually clicks when pressed where as mine is mushy and hard to press. There are a few other minor differences which makes me want to take hers and give her mine to sell when she's done with it.
What I'd like to know is if I can move all my data, as in games, apps, sms history.. everything over from my HD7 to hers at that time. I know the Feb update is coming and I've heard about some time of restore feature so not sure if this is my solution or if there's any other way of backing my HD7 up and restoring it to hers.
Anyone have any suggestions??
I went from a DVP to the HD7 and while I couldn't do a straigth transfer I was happy that the Zune sofware reconized my sim card so I didn't have to re purchase any I had bought for the other phone. Only down fall was having to download everything again.
Seperate note the Zune software did bring over some of the apps I had automatically but none of my music.

(Finished/closed)entire music dissapeared suddenlly?

Hello guys
I have a strange problem but first this is what i have.
sony xz1 compact stock firmware android 9 latest security update of september (fu sony)
Yesterday i wanted to play some music when suddenlly i got this message that said i can not play it or something like that and then tried dozen of other songs and nothing worked they all gave the same message except for a stock song that came with the phone that did work.
I restarted the phone but that didnt help then i thought ill look once i get home...
So i get home and look into it and suddenlly i notice they are all gone? except for the stock song that comes with the phone ?
All my songs gone in thin air how is this possible ??
I havent downloaded an app recentlly nor done anything to it my phone so what gives is this even possible do i have a virus? am i hacked? software corrupted somehow?
Afterwords i notice phone acts strange sometimes going into settings and go to storage makes my phone slow or crashes trying to look for my music but nothing there either.
I am super pissed because i was gonna put a custom mod on my phone anyway i was just trying to get some experience with root on an old phone first and then this happens ...
anyone happen to have heard of anything like this happening to someone before?
I made this thread cause i dont have a back-up of my phone more importantlly of my music so in the offchance there is away to find out what happend .....
I assume the music was on internal storage? Because if you had it on an SD card, there would still be ways to recover it. Otherwise, the chances are rather slim. You would have to get the internal storage out of the phone somehow and then scan it on the PC. But since the internal storage cards are usually firmly soldered, that would be very work intensive.
Yes it was on the internal storage.
But it is so weird man like how can this happen out of the blue ?

There's only two kinds of PC users; the ones who have lost data and those that will.
As NeoSeven pointed out store your data base on the SD card. Then back it up at least twice on electronically isolated hdds.
Not much help now but it will prevent future loses.
I avoid firmware updates if the device is running stable and does what I need.
Anything can happen.
After a major firmware update a factory reset is best. At least clear the system cache.
allright clear thanks guys
