[Q] Syncing Galaxy S with Outlook - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried to read all topics here and elsewhere regarding my specific issue, but have found no answer. Solution to this is absolutely vital to me, so I will try here, because I know this is the place where legends are born. Sorry for the long post:
Scenario: I need to sync my Samsung Galaxy S calendar with my workplace outlook calendar (data from Outlook to Galaxy, one way). Only calendar needs to be synced, absolutely no contacts or emails.
Systems: WinXP SP 2, Outlook 2007, up to date Kies / Galaxy S, Froyo 2.2 downloaded via Kies (lucky pioneer), rooted, running OCLF, LauncherPro, several widgets including smooth calendar.
Preferred method: Outlook Sync with Kies (the crappiest application I have ever seen, and I've see a few): This worked well for the first time I sync'd calendar (was not rooted, os 2.1, no launcherpro, no OCLF). Now it has quit working:
Kies finds phone just fine, but when I click Calendar on Kies, it clocks for a second saying "events are being loaded" and then tells me to "please connect the mobile phone..." It seems as if there's something that interrupts the reception.
Also, if I click "contacts" on Kies it throws me an error message "Set property 'System.Windows.FrameworkElement.Style' threw an exception." (this also worked for the first time). Message viewer behaves like calendar (has previously worked).
So it seems that Kies has stopped co-operating with my phone. I have also tried disabling Launcherpro and oclf, re-installed Kies, nothing helps.
Alternative method: Syncing OTA with exchange. This would be perfect, except it also retrieves my work emails that are literally thousands of them packed with delicate data and huge attachments I don't want to carry around with my phone. A method of syncing only the calendar would be perfect, but nooo...
Not-in-a-million-years-method: Syncing Outlook with Google calendar and then syncing Google cal to phone. I will not send my company data to Google cloud, no way: In fact I'm quite surprised how many people seem to find this a perfectly viable solution.
Thanks for reading. Any tips, tricks, suggestions even solutions are awarded with a huge virtual banana and a warm thought.

Hunt down any media files on device with more then 16 letters and rename or del. There's a known bug in kies. You could also try exchange apps like "roadsync" and I think "touchdown"

I seem to have solved the Kies issue: One click lag fix blocked Kies from working. I uninstalled OCLF and things started working again (I also had to change Launcer back to tws, and kill K9 and smooth calendar processes in order to get usb connection.)

here's a nice way to do it for free

Free sync and backup pocket outlook to Google account

http://www.nuevasync.com I just set this up through the exchange server feature in activesync. It is an over the air sync to google calendar and contacts in gmail. (No pictures with the contacts in gmail ) I had a problem with duplicates at first, but I think that was because I was trying oggsync, goosync, and nuevasync at the same time. It appears to be working fine now. There are other options out there, but this one appears to be the easiest and free-est one out there without limitations. I hope you enjoy this as much as I am.
!Backup your stuff with PIM backup or something similar before you sync just in case!
very nice i will try it now
thanks chiles
with this we can now also change devices, roms, etc withoug worrying about PIM data loss

Can you set categories in Google Calendar and it sync over? That's my biggest annoyance, I 'need' categories in order to have PhoneAlarm do specific actions for me based on the event category, such as "Work meeting" quietens everything, but there are some others that set the power on time different, or make the sounds louder, etc.. That all works with using Outlook to sync, but I haven't seen an online solution that works yet.
I haven't tried. I seem to remember that goosync would dumb down your category to the one default category. It might have been an old version or something. Good luck with it though! I just looked and I didn't see any category option on the google calendar webpage.

Well...My contacts lost their pictures on the gmail contacts page. This doesn't keep all of the information. I also lost my throttle contact category information. It's good for a sim card backup tho
I haven't used it myself yet. However, on quick inspection, the settings page recognizes multiple calendars, so it might sync in separate categories. There doesn't seem to be an option to only sync contacts with phone numbers, so I don't want to use it yet because gmail creates new contacts for those you email.
gave it a try and seems to work well! i only sync my calendar(s) and fits to it almost perfectly. the only problem is.. i'm having multiple calendars at my google calendar, and i cannot decide which calendars to sync. anyways that's better than goosync, only one calendar can be selected to sync.. otherwise have to upgrade to pro.. :E
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I was using scheduleworld with the funambol client, but that stopped being able to connect. I would like to try to us nuevasync, but for as simple as the setup instructions are my activesync says that "Microsoft exchange did not accept my logon credentials". The server source is setup per the instruction on nuevasync site. I am running the stock ATT rom with WM6.0. I haven't knowingly changed any of my network settings and internet and email still work properly, but I can not get either funambol or nuevasync to work. Any thoughs would be appreciated.

Synchronisation issues with Galaxy S (2.2)

I have some synch issues (with KIES) for which I hope to find a solution here.
Issue 1:
I store the mobile number of several of my contacts in this syntax (in Outlook 2010):
*31#+312012345678
After synching the number is displayed in the Galaxy S as:
*31#312012345678
(note the + symbol is missing, the phone can't dial this number).
The reason that I store these numbers in this way is:
- I don't send out my callerID by default.
- For some contacts I do wish to send out my callerID, the prefix *31# does that.
Issue 2:
For most of my contacts I have a birthday listed in Outlook 2010. The birthday is automatically added to Outlook's Calendar.
When synchronising my Calendar & Contacts, the Galaxy S also detects the birthday and does the same thing, it adds a birthday to the calendar. However it doesn't use the same format as Outlook. Also it doesn't check if the birthday is already present in the calendar). So everybirthday is added to my calendar twice. Very annoying.
Does anyone know how I can resolve both issues?
Now I have to keep deleting double birthdays and editing contacts after a synchronisation.
I don't want to use a sync via Gmail, or anything. I want to sync directly between Outlook 2010 and my phone (via USB).
Anyone with a suggestion?
I notice inconsistencies between Outlook and my phone when I use Kies to synch...
I switched to using MyPhoneExplorer for synch, and only use Kies to check on firmware upgrades from time to time.
The calendar items (even birthdays and recurring meetings) now seem to be correctly synchronized... Kies used to somehow give me multiple listings of some calendar items and certain phone #s...
I think this was originally a Symbian product but the android version is on the Market, and you can grab the PC client on their website.
Thanks, however this tools does:
*31#+31<number>
into
*31#0031<number>
Something I don't want. I don't want the + to be replaced with 00.
Also the birthday issue still exists.
Any other suggestions?
Stop using kies. its a piece of ****

[Q] Any updates on Outlook Sync?

Running fresh install 2.2 on captivate - I've spent the last several hours trying to find a way to sync the captivate with outlook... and nothing is coming up as a reliable & cheap way. I would have never thought that a modern(ish) phone would have issues syncing with outlook. Never had a problem from the old 8125 up to iphone 3gs... but thought I would check with y'all to see if anything less than $50 has come up that would do the trick. I've tried Kies/MyPhoneExplorer(didn't see outlook calendar data except holidays and recurring events). I don't want to mess with google calendars and I live by the calendars for scheduling business! Any recent developments I should look in to?
Android and Outlook have generally never been close friends. There are a few paid apps you can find that do a very good job of keeping your information in sync.
If your business uses exchange you can set up your exchange account in the e-mail app on your phone and it will allow you to sync you mail, calendar and contacts.

Unfortunately my work is my business of me, myself, and I - so I haven't popped for an exchange server, but the frustration is almost close enough to just look into getting one done - and I've had a hard time finding an ap that syncs outlook and respective contact fields properly with the phone. I understand it's a google vs. MS deal and so they don't want to make it an easy one.... but it's a stupid idea since it will just push people to use iPhone, IMO. For now, I've relented to having to clumsily use google sync and the google calendar program to sync between to two. I just hate having middlemen to have to do it.
I use Kies 1.5.3.10093_80. I hear the newer versions are blocked from working with the captivate, but the older version works find for syncing w/outlook on my home system.

I use Google Calendar Sync and GO Contact Sync Mod. My ISP uses Google Apps for email etc... They were both free and work well.

I use the same apps, to keep contacts and calendar sync. For the E-Mail I just configure in Outlook the Gmail account as IMAP. The only drawback is with the custome field in google that Outlook can't handle.

[Q] Oh No! Not Another Kies / Outlook Sync Problem

Driving me nuts, so here goes.
Worked 1 time and never worked again.
Windows XP environment, running Outlook 2003 SP3
USB interface to Samsung SGH-I777
Kies current version (just downloaded).
Kies can not find Outlook, even though Outlook is exactly where it belongs and has not moved. Outlook file is named the default Outlook.pst
When you try to sync anything (contacts, schedule, etc) the error message is "Cannot retrieve information for Outlook folder."
Is there a configuration setting somewhere to point to the Outlook file?
What needs to be changed (cleaned up? purged? pointed to?) so Kies can find the Outlook file and a sync can actually happen?
Any constructive suggestions cheerfully accepted.
- Alternative to Kies -
On Android phone:
Contacts: save & sync with Google account, never save to Phone contacts.
Photos: save to external sdcard.
Apps: use market app AppBrain.
Appointments/calendar: sync with Google account, setup Hotmail as Exchange mail.
Read how to sync Outlook - Gmail on Google Gmail.
SMS: GO SMS Pro handles backup, or use other messaging backup app (Market) to serve stock messaging.
The Samsung USB drivers are available without installing Kies:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/SAMSUNG-USB-Driver-1480.shtml
I usually have USB mass storage + USB debugging enabled all the time, and SGS function like an USB stick when connecting to Windows.
In case of emergency this make adb contact anytime. Freeware (win/linux/ios) QTadb is really handy in root operation.
= never use Kies
Thx for reading, press THANKS if u like
Sorry, but I was asking for a KIES solution.
There are plenty of other options, and I do NOT want a Google solution.
Appreciate your taking the time to reply, but it did not answer my problem.
Still waiting for a constructive solution.
STILL waiting for a useful response.
I am looking for how to make Kies actually work.
Or is Kies such a piece of garbage it is incapable of working?
Come on folks - Kies to sync via USB between Outlook and an Android phone.
This should be a no-brainer. It don't work! How do we make it work?
Anyone?????
Connect your VPN first if exchange server need VPN
I get the same problem with my office exchange server is in VPN.
connect the VPN and open outlook to see successfully connected or not.
Retry after connected.
The problem go away if outlook working properly.
found an app in Play Store called "Outlook Synced Note - USB Sync" not sure if it'll help but you could give it a try... also had this link on page http://www.android-sync.com/

[Q] s-planner and outlook disappointed

Hi this its my first please go easy. I'm disappointed now with the galaxy note and Android. I need a decent calendar as I record all my work and then search by client to find my history and details and then paste into invoices from outlook on my laptop
Here's the story;
I've had the old HTC windows phones hd2 tytn etc and used stylus then touch synced outlook etc. Then got an iPhone4 to try out. The calendar was poor as it wouldn't let me search far back, found ical app which is brilliant. Now I'm not a fan of apple as its far to restrictive and you have to jailbreak to free it. Then along came the note, brilliant, large screen stylus notes, everything I want. So I've had it month and finally took the plunge to get outlook onto goggle calenear and s planner. What a nightmare, first I have outlook 2002 so finally get appointments to google then synced to phone. thought I'd use google calendar and phone and not outlook. Can't search easily on google calendar and s-planner crashes when searching. I do have a history of 5000 events though going back 5 years, but no problem with iPhone or old windows 6.5.
My conclusion galaxy note brilliant but let down by Android. Also apps are battery draining and data usage restrictions difficult. Now I know why ios will prevail and that is just as disappointing. Sorry for long post.
I can empathize with you. I used to be a happy user of Palm Desktop, which worked 100% as expected. Then I was forced into the Outlook world, which almost worked (through Activesync), but it had its glitches, like suddenly not connecting or producing duplicate entries, which consequently would give me multiple alarms for the same event. Now I am using a Note, with S-Planner and Google calendar and it doesn't seem as solid as Outlook, not to mention Palm Desktop.
Still, Outlook has never been a perfect piece of software and I won't miss it much. If Samsung managed to put together a sensible version of KIES, it would be enough for me.
Alternatively, if you really depend heavily on Outlook, why not try a third party synchronizing software, like Companionlink http://www.companionlink.com/ ?
Trouble is google calendar is to basic for me and has stopped syncing the last 3 months but has all the older events ? even though out is on my s-planner, so i think i need outlook. I do have the 2002 version though which not very compatible.
I don't know why the s planner is force closing when searching.
My key essentials are outlook sync to phone and search.
I would get outlook 2010 if this would help sync as I don't want to go back to iPhone
the iPhone app was weekcal by utilitap which was great.
I also use Outlook 2002 (when I have to), since later versions, especially 2007 and 2010 are even worse than that. They seem to have lots of functions, but these are not well implemented. Even though they seem to work, they are buggy and instead of quietly doing what they're supposed to, produce lots of infamous Outlook secret error codes for you to resolve. I don't have time for this kind of game.
Google calendar misses some functions, but as far as I am concerned, it synchronizes well all the events I put into S-Planner. It looks like there's a problem in your setup. Do you have automatic data synchronization turned on on your Android phone? Do you synchronize while connected to WiFi? Or maybe your data transfer is somehow blocked when on 3G network?
I do have data sync on and sync via wifi. Good point I will change this. May do a hard reset as I am not using as my main phone yet, just trying to get everything stable before I transfer. Shame about all this though as it is a great phone.
Thanks for your help.
This may help re the search crashes in S-Planner - I noticed this as well, immediately after a recent firmware update. Before that, S-Planner search worked fine. I plan to register with Samsung and raise a ticket or ask a question - the more of us that register and complain, the quicker it will be fixed, so I'd encourage you to do the same.
Further to the search crash. It's tied to the Google Calendar (that S-Planner interacts with). Called Samsung New Zealand for support and what a surprise, they didn't even want to talk to me about the problem. Figured it out for myself with the help of a little forum searching - it seemed that that the calendar cache was conflicting with the firmware update. Backed up data, forced the calendar to close from Manage Applications, rebooted, and now the search works fine - I've run about 5 searches and all seems good so far. Re syncing with Outlook - I sync using Kies with Outlook 2007, no problems so far.
Logged a query with samsung and just done a factory reset and now have Kies installed on my PC. It wont sync with outlook 2002 contacts or schedule get message "an error has occurred attempting to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt"
Looking on forums there seems to be a problem with kies or I dont know if it is a problem with outlook 2002. I could upgrade to 2003 (I like the week view of 2002) then the google sync software would work hopefully for the outlook to google calendar? Idealy just want reliable local sync from outlook to Note, just like with my iphone to weekcal (sorry to say the iphones looking like gods gift at the moment).
Hopefully ICS will put all this right.
Simple answer for you - I use outlook for work all day and I sync using myphonexplorer. It does more than just sync, install programs allows you to text via laptop etc. Best of all its free - syncs via wifi or usb or bluetooth. Its nothing short of perfect for my needs. Syncs contacts, notes, diary etc
Same issue for me with ActiveSync.
While I was on GB no matter what application I used the sync never happened. The application just pops a message that the server refused the connections or some thing of the sort. After a few searches I found out that my Org's mail policies are on stricter side and they do not allow syncing on certain androids unless they support encryption. As Samsung has not implemented it, I had to check my mails on webmail.
But looks like even ICS is a disappointment on this front. I flashed an ICS ROM and checked, but no luck on MS EAS
Jorte Calendar?
This maybe not be germane to all your problems, but I struggled with the native Samsung calendar / tasks app to sync properly - especially with the widget view.
I switched to Jorte Calendar. It syncs perfectly AFAICT with Google calendar, has great tasks support and about a million different customisable widget views.
Unfortunately, searching appears to be its Achilles' heel... which I guess for you means its no go.
On the PC end, I have switched to Em Client. All so far is syncing fine. Note, tablet, PC, cloud; calendar & contacts.
Could not get myexplorer app utility to work either. Got duplicates of calendar appointments (total of 5000 appointments twice !)
Restored from back up and now still have no
Appointments , events on my note.
Taking too much of my time up.
Still using iPhone for general day to day.
One thing I have noticed though is how much battery my note has in reserve after getting rid of apps, like battery saver, juice defender etc. Ironic really.
