[Q] how to get into fastboot - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't seem to find out how to get into the fastboot on my n1. I searched and came out empty handed. This is my first android phone and I have had it for 4 days. I rooted the phone and got setCPU but apparently I need to get into fast boot in order to use it.

If you turn off you phone, then turn it back on while holding down the trackball, that will take you directly to fastboot. (use volume and power keys to navigate in fastboot)
Not sure why you need fastboot for setCPU. If you have a rooted rom, you should just be able to run it, you will need a modified kernel to overclock it though, that doesn't necessarily require fastboot either.

According to. Redmond pie I need. To enter some things in fastboot. My set CPU says that it cannot gain root access and that it needs to be added as a superuser program or something like that.

Are you sure you have root? Check, using a root access flashlight from the market...

It is your rom that gives you root priveleges, (not saying there isn't) but i can't think of anything you are going to put into fastboot that will change that.
I don't think flashlight needs root anymore, the simplest other method is to go to the terminal emulator app, and simply write "su" into it (without quotation marks, if it says permission denied, you don't have root, if "#" appears, you have root.
You can also check for a "superuser" app in your drawer, it also gives a list of apps you have given root permissions to, setCPU should be in there

To add to that:
When you try and run SetCPU, the SuperUser app should pop up with a message, asking if you want to grant superuser permission...

It sure doesn't do that.

It says it can't link su.

When I go here and download the 1.6.2 and try to root it says your device is alreadyrooted.

How to Root in Cyanogen 4.04?

Hello everyone, I apologize in advance if I've posted this in the wrong section. Ok so here is my problem, I recently got Cyanogen 4.04 (Latest stable release) on my phone. I was gonna try out the overclock app from the App market but it doesn't let me open it because i'm not ROOT. I thought users are always ROOT in modded ROM, are they not? If not then what should I do to ROOT? I used the one click method for root at the begining (to install cyanogen) and Haykuro SPL Update. Thanks.
p.s I am a complete noob so please go slow.
If you have used the 1-Click-Root method, did you follow the steps to type in telnetd using a terminal app? If not then I would go back and re-trace your steps.

Yes I did the telnetd thing. After rebooting clicking on an emptyspace then RETURN, wait, RETURN then telnetd which took me to the contact list. Then Home. Then I went to the terminal app and did the 4 step thing. But I did all that before flashing the Cyanogen for the first time. Now that I have Cynogen installed, if I try to Connect in telnet it gives me an error and if I try to do the 4 step thing in Terminal emulator it says "permission denied. (are you root?)". Please tell me what should I do?

type su into the terminal emulator and see what is says. if you were able to flash a custom rom then your phone is rooted, you could've gotten a bad download.
Download Better Terminal from the Maket and as david mentioned, type in "su" then press enter to see if you have root access.
if nothing pops up upon entering su does that mean a new wipe and install is nessecary??
Reason i ask is i can't get the terminal emulator to work either that came with the build....is it the same thing as better terminal????. I used a one click install and everything is running fine on my 4.0.4 build but i tried earlier as well to install the "overclock" app from market and it wouldn't work. I decided to purchase SetCPU instead for a buck and it works no problem. By the way i have a my touch 3g..

dont think the terminal emulator works w/o a physical keyboard
better terminal will get the job done, but not the same app. You can just use that instead of terminal
but if terminal does work w/o a physical keyboard, when you type su, what does it do?
if it asks to allow or deny, click allow. if you hit always deny, go to the superuser app and erase all settings.
if it doesnt ask anything, when you type su, it should drop one line and have this symbol #

Thanks for the help....
I actually did download better terminal and when i typed in su and hit enter. It went to the screen your talking about and since i had just installed SetCPU it asked if i wished to allow i clicked yes. So i asume i have rooted correctly and guess the "overclocking" program on the market might just not download on my phone correctly with the cyan 4.0.4.
Thanks
Thanks to all of you for your replies. I think I know what the problem was. The OverclockWidget is a Widget...duh silly me. I was trying to open it as a regular app and was failing. Added it as a widget on the first screen and now everything works. I have one quick unrelated question, while downloading the latest experimental release of Cyanogen I read at the bottom of the post in read that the users should not use any Apps2SD while using Cyaogen's latest release because the ROM does it by itself or something like that. What does that mean?
@mikespy- tap and hold for a sec on your screen and add the OverclockWidget widget on your screen then tap to open. That's how you open the OC util.

Need Root help

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm running OSX Snow Leopard, using terminal and attempting to gain root access to my new Nexus One. I was able to quickly and easily unlock the boot loader, however, I have made multiple attempts to gain root access for model ERE27 using superboot, but while everything seems to appear normal, I can not flash the recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1-cyan.img. When I reboot the phone I attempt to run terminal app from market and find I am still denied permission. I've checked every site I could to correct this, but seem to be missing something every time. When attempting to root, I cd to applications/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/superboot. I press enter then chmod +x-install-superboot-mac.sh Then I press enter and key ./fastboot-mac. After processing in terminal and seeing a status bar briefly on the nexus upper right screen of the Nexus, terminal says Okay. I reboot and no root access. PLEASE HELP. Been at this for an embarrassingly long time now...
Have you installed a rooted rom? or just trying to see if you have root access on the stock rom?

Ignore the installation commands, you need to boot in to recovery and push the hosts file to /system/etc/ on the phone.
Adfree works fine. The reason it doesn't work on slide has nothing to do with the app. The hosts file goes in /system/etc/ and since we don't have r/w access to /system, the app can't do what's its supposed to do. It works great I used it the whole time I had a G1, its just cus your phone isn't PROPERLY rooted. Neither is anyone elses til we get that SPL...
Til then you gotta adb push the file thru recovery...
I dunno if you know this, but adfree temporarily d/l's the hosts file to your sdcard, then deletes it when its done. But since it couldn't replace the file on my slide, it left it on the sdcard! All you gotta do is run the app and wait for it to error out, then go get the file and put it on your pc and adb push to /system/etc...

Actually, its rooted just fine (you can run anything you want as uid 0). The SPL security has nothing to do with root.
It is like saying you don't have the proper key to a door just because after you open it there is a guard standing there not letting you in to the next room.
Just being picky...
i think what he meant is that with all the other phones most of us have had we had an SPL to flash once we had done the original tweaks(or before on some phones) so as of right now i agree that the phone is not rooted properly yet as i don't have full control over the phone whenever i want, i want to be able to mv stuff to system partition from android terminal
just being picky...
could anyone please post the actual commands? im new to adb and wold really appreciate the help adfree is the entire reason i even rooted
among others but it was the number one
adb push hosts /system/etc

thank you so very much
Other than removing a few of the stock apps, this is one of the things I'm looking forward to rooting for, I loved it on my G1.
With all of the folks having so much trouble rooting this sucker though, I may wait awhile.
it said this
' failed to copy 'hosts' to '/system/etc': Permission denied '
and if i type su it asks for a password and if i try to run in root it says that production models wont run in root
but i rooted and have the superuser permissions apk installed and has granted me permission to other things

same thing happened to me. but as falken mentioned before, you have to make sure the system is mounted before running the command. so..
boot into recovery.
go to 'partitions'.
select 'mount /system'.
run adb command "adb push hosts /system/etc".
reboot system.
*you might wanna might wanna be sure the comp sees the device in recovery before running the command via "adb devices". i do this before i do any adb'ing.
*be sure the hosts file is in the root of your sdk directory, otherwise your command will vary.

[Q] OneClick Root Works, But Superuser App Missing?

Hi, I posted a similar question about this under the OneRoot thread, but I don't see a lot of activity there anymore, so I was hoping to get more responses in a separate thread. I've scoured this forum and everywhere else on the Net and I haven't seen anyone experience this same issue. Hopefully someone will understand the problem and have some idea how to rectify it.
So, I have an AT&T Samgsung Captivate with the stock 2.1 Android "Eclair" build on it. I do believe there was an AT&T issued OTA update for it not long ago that put the build number up to UCJH7. I followed the instructions for TGA_Gunnman's One Click Root/UnRoot method documented here. Everything seems to work fine, in terms of booting into the recovery mode and selecting the update file. After the phone reboots, however, I do not see the Superuser Permissions app with ninja icon in my Applications area. If I browse the directory tree in my internal SD card in /system/apps, I do see a SuperUser.apk file. However, clicking on that shows me the message "Install blocked: For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market." So it appears that rooting procedure worked, all the necessary parts were installed, but I don't have permission to execute su. I see that the xbin folder has been created, and it does contain busybox, su and something called ipctool. Also, a link does exist in /system/bin between su and /syste/xbin/su. If I use the Terminal Emulator and type "su", the prompt sits there for 10 seconds and says "permission denied".
Any ideas on what could be preventing me from gaining superuser access here?
Thanks for your help,
Mike
Download and install "SuperUser" from the Android market
OK, so here is another strange thing about this. This doesn't seem like it'd be related to my original su permission problem, but you never know. I decided to try to un-root using the one click method. Now, during the un-root script, I see the adb daemon start, but it fails on the push command writing unroot.zip to update.zip in the /sdcard folder; it says that permission is denied!. Of course, after booting into recovery, applying the update file fails, as it wasn't found in /sdcard. I'm not sure how this could have happened, as the root script was able to push the root.zip to sdcard just fine initially. Now, after I open a shell against my phone using adb, I check the permissions for the sdcard folder, and this yields rwxrwxr-x. I'm not sure, but I believe there should be another w flag set for other on sdcard. How the heck could that have been cleared?
It does look like I can copy the update.zip to sdcard manually through Windows Explorer and just manually boot into recovery using volume up + down + power, so I'm not completely dead in the water. Yet, I'd like to fix the permissions for sdcard, or else I can no longer use the one-click method.

Thanks for advice. I will definitely try this, but I did not see this step listed in the oneclick root method? I do see an .apk file for SuperUser in /system/apps, so it seems like the app is already resident. The problem is that it doesn't show up in my main application area on the phone, and I can't run the app; it says it is blocked.
Even if there was a superuser app in the market, wouldn't I need to enable sideloading to get it (which AFAIK need root access)?
Again, thanks for the advice, I appreciate you taking the time to help.

Its blocked BC u are trying to install it, not run it. Read that error message again.
What happens if you open ROM manager and try to flash clockwork recovery? Or load titanium backup?
End points are HIGHLY important, and if you read your post carefully, you have not yet demonstrated that superuser access is broken, only the icon from which you inferred it is broken. Let me know then we can go from there

Yeah, you're right, now that I see that error message, I guess it is trying to install it. That's odd, because I thought that the oneclick method would have already installed this app during the recovery boot load?
Regarding ROM manager, funny you should ask, that was the entire genesis of why I'm trying to root, so I can backup my phone and install the custom ROMs. After I installed ROM manager and tried to run it was where I initially noticed I must not have root access. When I try to flash clockwork recovery, the app hangs for (oddly enough) around 10 seconds. I never see any prompt for granting root access to clockwork recovery, nor does it boot into the recovery mode.
Okay I have another idea.
If your goal is to simply make a backup to flash a ROM, try this:
1. Download Cog 2.3b6. Other ROMs may have the file I'm looking for but I know it is here. Also you may be able to search and find this file directly but I'm too lazy to find the link for you lol
2. Open the zip file on your computer and extract /sdcard/update.zip
3. Adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
4. Reboot recovery, reinstall packages, you are in clockwork recovery and can back up your ROM.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'd like to try that, except that it appears there is some type of permission snafu on /sdcard. I believe the permissions on that folder *should* be 777, but it is 775 (other has no write access) for some odd reason, and I have no clue how that happened. Hence, when adb tries to push the update.zip to the internal SD folder, it gets permission denied. As I mentioned, not sure if this is related to not being able to execute su, but it is strange nonetheless.
Guys, please disregard what I mentioned earlier about adb and not being able to push the root/unroot.zip to /sdcard. I'm a moron, and I had left the internal SD card mounted to Windows after connecting the phone via USB. Clearly for adb to push/pull off of /sdcard, the internal SD card must *not* be mounted by Windows. My mistake, sorry for the confusion.
The original theme of the thread is still unanswered though, which is how the one-click root could have worked and not installed the SuperUser app onto my phone.
I will try the recommendation earlier in the thread, to download and install the SuperUser app from Android Market to see if that fixes things.
OK, so I downloaded and installed the SuperUser app from the Market, and for whatever reason, this seems to have addressed the issue. I am now prompted to allow applications root privileges. I'm not sure why this was necessary or how it fixed things, perhaps because it overwrote the version of su that was on my phone with a newer one. In any case, it's working.

[Q] Moto X forgot it was rooted

I have rooted my phone successfully, and in the beginning apps that required root access would check for root, and request su access, but now that doesn't happen.
1. Anyone know what happened, and how do I get applications to request root access again?
2. How do I update the SuperSU binary, when it asks?
Rooted using SlapMyMoto, on Android 4.4 Stock.
Make sure you have the latest supersu from the play store but when it asks you to update the SU binary, it should show two options, normal and twrp, since i'm assuming you're locked (plus it's just easier), choose normal. Also, i'm not sure what the process is, but you might need to re-run whatever it is that you use to root (i'm unlocked so i'm not familiar with the process) because it sounds like you don't have system mounted as rw. If this is the result of an OTA, because people are losing rw from taking the verizon OTA, you might be out of luck until a new method is found.
-edit- another fix might be to re flash supersu if you have safestrap installed, and just clarification, it will not ask for root for the same app twice unless you tell it to ask again next prompt.

Thanks for the reply. I took the OTA to 4.4 from 4.2, and I was still rooted. Something happened with SuperSU, and now the phone is behaving as if it is not rooted, or it's half rooted (if that makes sense).
MyBackupPro would always ask for root access, and then SuperSU would grant it automatically. Now this doesn't happen. Also, I'm trying to use Helium backup as well, and when it tries to ask for root access, it fails. Any app that usually requests root access doesn't even ask.
Thanks.

I always thank replies whether it helps or not.
I am trying to retrace the steps I did to root, but not the entire process. Hope to save time from having to redo everything again.
I fixed it.
I did the following steps (not sure if this did anything but...):
uninstall SuperSU
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash motoboot motoboot.img
fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot reboot
adb push su /data/local/tmp/su
adb push install.sh /data/local/tmp/install.sh
adb push rec.sh /data/local/tmp/rec.sh
adb push install-recovery.sh /data/local/tmp/install-recovery.sh
adb push setup.sh /data/local/tmp/setup.sh
adb reboot
adb shell
echo "/data/local/tmp/rec.sh" > /sys/kernel/uevent_helper
<-- THIS FAILS, as expected. It worked when I first rooted the device, but doesn't work any longer, but this is OK.
it returns: /system/bin/sh: can't create /sys/kernel/uevent_helper: Permission denied
Once again, this is OK.
Install SuperSU
DO NOT OPEN IT. JUST INSTALL IT.
Apps now request root permission.
adb shell getprop ro.boot.write_protect
returns a value of:1 which means my bootloader is locked write protection is enabled, but I still have proper root access.
Hope this helps the next guy.

When in Android, connect the phone to your PC USB port. I hope you've already installed the Android SDK and Moto drivers. Open a cmd prompt with admin privileges and type "adb devices" to check if your PC recognizes the phone. If so, then type "adb reboot recovery". The phone will reboot just as it normally would, only this time write protection is off. Or do the steps below or type "adb reboot bootloader".
