Do any of the cognition versions have a gps fix? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running the stable cognition 2.1 version.
Or do the 2.2 cognition versions have a gps fix in them?
I hate running beta versions which is why I'm not running 2.2.

There is no real GPS fix that I know of. You can play with the lbstestmod to try and improve performance.
Captivate
Cog 2.2

Latest CoG version runs great.
GPS works well in the car but you need to have in a dock on the window. If you have it on the chair, wont work, it will tell you that you're in Moscow

None of the 2.2 versions have any modifications for GPS. Some of the earlier 2.1 versions did, you can check DG's download page and the change log shows whats in each and when he removed the "fixes".
I have had better luck with the 2.2 versions but Im on my 3rd captivate and I can say that my 1st one sucked in comparison with me 2nd and 3rd. My first was just a lemon, I hosed the second and got a replacement as the 3rd. The only setting that has seemed to make much of a difference for me is going with cold start versus hot start but that could just be me and what I "think" helped.

If you have a phone with a working 3 button combo, try shep s rom based on the jpm i9000 build. Gps could lock in my living room and locked/tracked well while moving. The reason why I mention the 3 button combo is for some reason, that rom does not let you into down load mode with the vol + plugging in usb so you could perma brick your phone.

Well, it works for me

Yes and no. Froyo has decent performance but soema are haveing problems. I personally see a problem if i leave lbs test mode running too long. Lbs can get a lock better than google maps. So sometimes ill use it first if i have troubke getting a lock. But it will turn the gps off after some time on my phone( icon disapears feom notification bar). After that i see the chip turn off at a regular interval in google maps. Some software works without a hitch like my tracks. Some seems to cause a similar problem. And some is touchy. I might sugest trying an alternative software like navdroyd. And if you dont get a lock at first just be patient. The error on my phone doesnt seem to be universal and only a factory reset fixes it. Still i dont recomend changing the lbs settings just incase. If you dont get a lock go outside with a clear sky and let it try for at least 10 minutes. In google maps you will need to prevent it from sleeping so you might want to try an alternative program. Once you get a lock you shouldnt have trouble getting another one. But some are still sating they have poor gps. Either there are alot of negafive people or the gps performance is inconsistant. It may just be a hardware issue. For navigation in your car you might want a bluetooth gps antenna. The phone should otherwise work for walking around.
edit: i have no dificulty navigating in my car with no accesories. Even with the phone on the pasenger seat. Other than the one error which i have been able to prevent lately my gps works great.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897

My GPS is fine if i give it a pretty much vertical view of the sky through the windshield. If i set it on the passenger seat or in a cup holder it performs terribly.

This should have been asked in the Roms thread instead of opening a new thread.

Need help with some issues

Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out if I want to just return my captivate and go back to my iphone, or if there's a way to deal with this thing.
My issues are basically:
Browser perfomance is ****, to say the least. Panning and zooming on most sites is painfully bad - XDA worst than pretty much any other site out there. When I try to type in the browser, I'll hit 10 keys, and 3 will show up...a few seconds later another 2 will be entered...etc. Zooming is bad, I don't know why. Panning just looks jerky/non-fluid.
Bluetooth: I have an Acura with the tech package, so having bluetooth work is kinda a requirement. However, every time I try to do anything bluetooth related, the phone slows to a crawl. If I hit the home softkey, it takes 1-2 minutes for the phone to go home. I eventually have to pull the battery to reset.
Data: Sometimes, it just drops totally. I'm sitting still with 4-5 bars, and suddely the marketplace won't load...or XDA won't load...try a second or third time and suddenly it loads fine. Unsure if this is just the marketplace (and XDA forums) being unreliable, or if the phone's data connection is just THAT bad.
GPS: I did the fixes in the "hidden" settings (supl settings and whatnot) and I now get fixes much faster, but they're always off. I seem to always be on AGPS, and not ever getting sattelite fixes...that, or the settelite fixes are just really as bad as AGPS is.
Perf in general: not so hot. Some things work well, some things will crawl at times.
Facebook: no push notifications? What?
I'm on the latest SRE, and I can flash back to the stock kernel if that'll help...
But in general, my opinion after slightly over a week is that this just feels like when I still played with Linux a few years ago - a toy. Nothing for general consumption, nothing for someone who just wants it to work - and feel free to tell me I'm wrong, I'm still not totally decided and have another 3 weeks to return this...but I'm hard pressed to find a reason to keep using this instead of going back to my iphone. A wireless AP is amazing, but that's the only thing I keep coming back to...and who knows, a jailbroken iPhone might be capable of that?
Thanks for all the thelp!
RA
Are you using JF6 (the stock baseband that came with the phone)? because that one is miserably slow.
switch to JH3 and then flash SRE... it'll feel like an entirely different phone.
I felt the same way until I flashed several firmwares and applied different mods/lag fixes. You have to find what's right for you. It seems that Samsung may have skimped on the software side but they didn't hold back with hardware. With the new voodoo lag fix that's coming out soon, froyo, an official GPS fix, and promising android development for the Captivate, I'd say we're starting to realizing the true potential of this phone. I've never used bluetooth nor do I have any problems with data. You may have a bad phone... Perhaps you should exchange it for another and see if that remedies some problems? The ball is in your court but I could not bare to go back to the iPhone (I've been using it since it came out).
Wrong section of the captivate forum to be asking questions, theres a proper section for that..., about your issues most are plassebo, try flashing a i9000 rom and give it another try.

I'll give that a try then - I did just have to call ATT though to have them put me back onto the iPhone plan, since I'm doing a trip tomorrow and will want a working phone...I'll try flashing a few more things...but tbh, I keep reading about Froyo and GPS fixes...I saw posts about a GPS fix going out a month ago...when will it actually happen?

I totally agree with the earlier posts about trying other setups before giving up on it. I LOVE my setup. UCJH3 firmware, SREv1.2.1a, Tayutama's Lagfix4. All can be found on threads here.Do it step by step and you will see a HUGE difference. The only thing that will still suck, I think, is the GPS. I find mine very erratic. But everything else is great and almost no lag.
Most of your issues are non-existent on the stock ROM - so either you borked something while customizing or your phone has a hardware issue.
The browser should work without issue. GPS is broken, and none of the fixes do much so that we have to wait on Samsung.
The phone is in its infancy. Remember ios 2 on the 3g? Well apple learned a lot and there software is always polished. You may want to wait for the next android support phones. Apple did a good job this time around but the touch screen interface needs too many steps and the home screens are too cluttered I want to put icon any where putting them in groupings helps my eyes and brain navigate. I'll trade the gps and a few bugs for that any day. Phones are supposed to be intuitive, the iphone may be easy but I'll argue all day that is not intuitive. Android may be less easy but I can make it intuitive, it takes a little time and a few market apps though. That's why I chose this phone, but I don't knock iphone users, just the fanboys.
If you like to tinker ands it sounds like you do you may just get addicted to this thing.
The data problems may be do to the stock software, do a reflash of jh3, with the original I couldn't switch from wifi to edge or the other way around without killing the app and restarting it. I haven't noticed that problem lately with jh2

Facebook is badly broken on all Android phones I have ever used. There's a Link to an app called bloo here on XDA I think it's in Hero CDMA apps section. It has notifications and chat.

Yeah Facebook for android absolutely blows. Not just push notifications but the whole app. One of the worst apps I have on my phone. Like today, i had 2 notifications of ppl writing on my wall. When i go to notifications and click on the post to read the end of it, it opens in the browser??? Honestly??? Makes me back out, go to my own profile and then go to the wall. That's crap. Facebook for iPhone is better than the Facebook website, yet i would almost rather delete my Facebook account than use it on android.

[Q] why do we all have so different results for gps?

So there are people on here that get good (not fantastic) performance from there GPS with stock, while others like myself have terrible gps performance with stock. I can't lock on, only 2 satellites in view ext. ect, ect. I even tried all the lbstest changes people recommended and i had no change, while others say its fixed.
When I flashed JH7 from odin one click download I got really good results, locking on after a minute or less down to 10 M and with 9 statalites in view.
but I've read others didn't have the same result as me and nandroided back.
Are we sure we all have the same GPS hardware? why do all of our results vary so much with the same rom on the same hardware.

It could be that some people master clear, when others haven't. I use SRE and my performance is amazing with the GPS. DG does some tweaks still i believe, and my gps tracks amazingly.
Other than that, I have NO clue why. Maybe people have more trees in the area and get less lock? Only thing I can think of.
thanks for the reply, it turns out that after doing a master reset and reflashing jf6 my gps is running better. I dont know what changed but it is performing the same as jh7 was. I guess back to the drawing board
my gpa worked better stock, and with the overclock kernel and utb. I then used jf7 and sre and I'm thinking about going without sre, or maybe move ap only version.
I didn't try jf7 without sre though so I can't know what it will do. I actually have a feeling that my recent poor performance is nothing but a coincidence though. I'll give it a few days and a road test.

Mine works fine with JF6, utb, and lagfix ext4.
Wife's also works fine with JF6 and utb.
We used google navigation on hers yesterday and it worked just fine.
Part of the problem is not everyone is testing GPS the same way. The best test is using the NAV application - and not just on a simple route in the neighborhood. Combination highway and local driving - see if the NAV thinks you are on the street or keeps trying to reroute you. Does it tell you about turns or think you missed them?
Also Track your travels and view it on Google maps - really zoom in and see if you wander through buildings.
I think some of it may have to do with system blocking - more things running in the background may have to dow ith how often the GPS updates.

[Q] Problem with Gingerbread compass

finally got around to updating to GB (after Kies problems). Everything looked ok until I tried the compass.
Nothing seems to be working!
Tried several compass / GPS apps including Google Sky Map but the direction doesn't change with the orientation of the phone.
Anyone else come across this?
I have, I assume, the same problem as you.
I upgraded to 2.3.3 and now the compass doesn't work at all. For one thing, in Google Maps, if I hit the compass button the compass actually flips 180 degrees and points south instead of north. If I rotate the phone the compass rotates with it. In other words it doesn't track North at all. It just stays pointing in the same direction and turns with the phone, like it was stuck. I've tried every compass app I can find and have calibrated it over and over and still the same issue.
One thing I did find was if you type in *#0*# on the phone keypad you will open up a diagnostic screen. Tap the sensor button and you can see the magnetic sensor isn't reading north properly. But if you tap the magnetic button and then run the test is passes fine.
From what I've found browsing the web, it seems to be a common problem with Gingerbread 2.3.3 on HTC phones. So I'm assuming that it's the same problems that's affecting us on the Galaxy S (GT-I9000). And AFAIK, it's a known bug and has been reported to Google.
It's annoying for me, but not in the way that it will effect me in my day to day usage of the phone. I don't need the compass to work as I use Google Maps and GPS to navigate, not the compass. But of course I want it fixed because I do sometimes need to use the compass for other things. And of course because my phone has that feature and I paid for it so make it work FFS!
Anyway, hope there is a fix for it soon and Samsung doesn't take forever to release the update, like it did for Gingerbread. Of course, if someone come up with a fix that you need to be rooted for then I will take the plunge and root my phone. The only reason I haven't done it yet is that I can't find a simple and clear way of doing it on 2.3.3. Every guide I've read seems to be for Froyo and not Gingerbread. And when I downloaded "SuperOneClick" my Comodo Anti-Virus went nuts about a Linux exploit file in it. And although I don't think it was something that could be a danger to my Win 7 box, I cleared it just to be safe.
So, a long reply to basically say, "Me Too!!!11!!11!"

5. All the sensor values will be shown, look at the black dial with a red need. If "1 need calibration" is shown just rotate the unit a few times..... then "2 need calibration" when just "3" is indicated .........calibration done. Make sure there no power lines and metal structures are not nearby.

[Q][i9000] Custom Firmware?

I have the 16GB Vodafone UK Galaxy S. Today I was in a city trying to use satnav and it was rank rotten. So I thought I'd see if an upgrade would do it. I was using the very first Froyo that Vodafone came out with - I upgraded to that and hadn't upgraded since. I did have it rooted and 1 click lag fix was on it.
I upgraded to Gingerbread just there, sadly I had to do a factory reset, however it's all working.
I have realised that if I am going to put a custom firmware on it then now is just the right time to do it.
Is there one out there that's stable, and an improvement over the Gingerbread I'm using? Particularly I'd like it to fix the lag (if that still needs fixed) and even better would be fixing GPS/Satnav.
Pinpong blockbuster rom - ticks all your boxes. Get faster fix from market.
Your gps will never be 100% satisfactory in the city, in fact it will probably always be poor - no matter what custom rom you use.

Have you think about CM7? Great Rom, works well on my phone, and add many new things.
Hi Mate, I tried many custom roms and finally settled for
(ROM)GingerCriskeloV77-9LS-CamHack- SIP + NoIncRing I9000/T/M JVP 2.3.4
Cheers
Well, I managed to get it on. Booting up is weird though, it looks for a long time as if the screen is broken, but eventually ti comes on to the Blockbuster lock screen and then everything is fine. It does seem faster - but I'll only really know when I get to one of those situations where I feel the phone is frustratingly slow.
Thanks very much Woolf!
Time allowing I'll give the other roms a shot, although this Blockbuster one does seem to be good enough for me.
Sadly my phone now reboots constantly. it seems to do it when the screen locks

Check you got the installation right for that rom, maybe you had to flash a jvp stock first or some similar omission?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Sorry to hear you're having issues. Try flashing to a totally stock JVQ first (with repartition) once you've backed up, then if you don't like that, try a custom ROM. I don't think many JVQ custom ROMs are worth trying if you want a taste of custom ROMs. Better to try CM7 or MIUI for something fast and different.
As a side note, the best tip I've seen for fixing the dreadful GPS we have with the i9000 is to buy a Nexus S or just ANY other phone! Yes, some radios appear better than others, but nobody can prove anything and it's almost all subjective feedback. A drop in the ocean of improvement needed for satisfactory function. If you must use it, a bluetooth GPS receiver and 3rd party navigation app seem the best way to deal with it.
I've now stepped away from Blockbuster. Even doing the a perfect install it crashed often and repeatedly. I did try upgrading to the very latest and that crashed several times in the past hour. Part of the problem was the rom starts with a lockscreen that has a messaging unlock on it, but it isn't set to an app that comes with the rom, so it reboots every time. Sadly that wasn't the only problem, as I was still getting loads of reboots.
So that's out of the way.
I'm now a lot more comfortable using Odin so I'll be able to try other options. I'll try the other two suggested in this thread first of all.
Next to test is CM7.
Thanks for the help folks!
CM7 aborted. Instructions are incorrect, the file they say to download doesn't actually match the instructions so that's out. Plus it clearly states it's not suitable for day to day use... so I don't thnk the time in working out how to fix it is justified since it looks like it wouldn't be useful.
I'm going back to the original question in the thread, to say that I'm looking for something stable. I now think that a custom rom is not the way to go. However some modifications may well be.
Can anyone suggest some kind of lagfix/speedup that isn't a complete overhaul like CM7, Blockbuster etc, that is very stable and that'll make my phone faster?
Edit : Part of what I was doing to install Blockbuster was install Speedmod kernel. So I've gone and put that on, and used the clockwork mod to root it, and also convert to ext4. I think things are looking pretty fast so far. I'm not sure if there's a lagfix for this, but I'm quite comfortable just now footering around - unlike the complete rom I don't feel out of my depth. So I think I'll be ok for now.

[Q] GPS Loses fix (and precision) when screen off

Hi people!
On my Galaxy S i9000 I have on Juwe 5.3 (JVR) with Semaphore 1.6.0.
I have the following problem: my GPS works (good accuracy and locking speed) only when the screen is on. As soon as the screen goes off, I lose the fix and precision, while using tracking apps like Runkeeper or My Tracks and diagnostic ones like GPS Status.
I've tried to force the CPU on 1000 MHz with Voltage Control but the problem remains so I'm guessing it's not a performance issue.
Any ideas?
Everything else works fine.
Thanks!
The same happens on my phone (albeit w/ CM7), but I don't mind, since that would eat the battery. I can see how that would render certain apps useless, though. I've used a few ROMs in my day, and never noticed GPS staying locked while the screen was off. I'm interested in how you'd achieve this as well.
Hi.
Yes in fact when I was on stock the gps worked as expected but I was on froyo.
Than I updated to a beta GB and then to Juwe.
I'd prefer not to put a froyo rom just to test if possible. I'll wait for someone to come with some idea
Thanks!
Some updates:
- It seems not to be kernel releated (tried with both semaphore and CF-Root, will try also TalonDEV)
- Not rom releated also (from Juwe JVR to Simplicity JVT, passing thru stock JVT).
Any ideas?
Is there someone whose GPS stays locked even if the screen is off?
Thanks.
Interested as well. Anyone?
Hmm, my gps would always lose lock if i turned off screen (froyo too).. thought that was normal behaviour
i thought that depends on the app. navigon has a setting which says to keep gps on or off when minimised.

Probably this is right. Should be app-related.
I used to have a lot of GPS problems, but I solved them connecting GPS for the first time with WiFi on google maps, after that, GPs worked great without wifi being necessary anymore.

It seems that also other phones are affected by this problem/feature, after the update to Gingerbread.
Little update: the navigation app does not let the screen to turn off to not to lose gps fix.
