Sim free hd7? - HD7 General

Hi, does anyone know when the hd7 will be available to buy sim free in the UK? I got my hd2 from expansys last November and now I really want the hd7! I know I could get it on o2 and unlock it but I'm not so keen on that.
Thanks

No I dont think so, its exclusively available to O2 in the UK, Expansys dont show it as being available sim free either.

Strange decision to alienate potential new wp7 customers by restricting where and how you can get a hd7! Surely to make a new OS work make the flagship handset available to everyone!

German O2 HD7 is afaik Lock free. Perhaps you can import it from there.

The real issue is that not only HD7, but there is not any WP7 SIM free handset available. I really don't like these slavery and expensive 2 years contracts, or full of bloatware locked PAYG devices. So I'm looking only for SIM free but no avail. I don’t mind the O2 “exclusivity” because prefer Omnia 7 than HD7. Unfortunately the only info for expected stock availability, which I’ve found, is for the end of Nov!

As far as I know the HD7 will not be available sim free until the exclusivity deal ends with O2, date not known for this.
Out of interest, I got the following deal from O2 last week by phoning retentions dept after being a contract customer with them for many years:
Simplicity 12 month @ £15 per month
included 300 anytime minutes, unlimited texts, 500mb data
Handset cost £330
For me this was a good deal and probably the cheapest method of getting a HD7 right now.
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what M$ plan is. They copied Android and just flooded the market with too many phones. There is no flagship device, which is what boggles me the most.
I wouldnt be surprised if they come out with a Zune phone. From what I've heard the Zune HD was a solid piece of hardware; I don't see why they cant make a phone.
They may just be waiting for some of the kinks to be worked out of windows phone 7 and launch it when the OS really has some legs under it.

It's a joke all I want to do is spend my cash on the phone of my choice! I've been a fan of HTC Windows phones for years I choose to use a Vodafone 12 month sim only contract to get the best value, surely this is gonna piss people off!
Went to my local o2 store today and had a mess around with one, really impressed and they had 2 payg in stock soooo tempted! The only thing is it looks like people are having problems unlocking them and it voids the warranty which could be a real issue with a new phone.
Really don't know why they would want to stop people buying it sim free?!

To you this may sound bad, to other non geeky people (ie the type of people who wouldn't be on here) it's excellent.
I've lost count of the amount of people I know who have bought a HTC Desire just because they want a HTC and have no idea what Android is. "Fanboys" can be a great asset, apple has shown that and there are a load of HTC, Samsung fanboys around atm. People will buy phones like the HD7 just because it's made by HTC and has a nice big screen, not because it has windows phone, that's just a bonus or they may not even be aware of what windows phone 7 is.

I've ordered it at Expansys Belgium, maybe you could buy it there as it wouldn't take too long to ship.

I've had a good look on other sites selling the hd7 and I'm a bit uneasy about doing that, so I'm going to my local o2 store to buy one today and unlock it. 2 questions though:
Is it only online purchased hd7s that are struggling to be unlocked? I live in a small town and there are 2 payg in stock chances are they are from the first batch so might still unlock?
When I do unlock it will I still be able to receive official updates from Microsoft or will unlocking it void my phone?
Thanks

If its one of the earlier phones you should stand a good chance of unlocking it. Unlocking will not stop you from getting Microsoft updates.

Thanks for that, off up town now

I, also have no understanding why there is no option to have the device via a operator or to buy off line, why would I want to buy from o2?

Because in the UK it's exclusive to o2?

O2 probably paid for the exclusivity buy commeitting to xxx number of units, if your carrier hasn't got it, then complain to them for not giving the OEMs the cash. From some of the reports out their it looks like the industry wasn't backing this new OS and have been caught out by the demand.
I brought mine on PAYG on day 1 from O2 at £389 (uk pounds), sim free I think it will sell for at least £499 to £539). So O2 got exclusivity AND was able to knock a few pounds off for it's customers.
Got my unlock code from O2 over the weekend free of charge, will try it out tomorrow

I also bought mine for £389, on launch day (£379 + required £10 top up). I haven't even bothered taking the o2 sim out of its packaging.
Straight away I used a giffgaff sim that I had ordered (see giffgaff.com). I pay £10 a month for:
150 minutes,
unlimited texts,
unlimited data (with no fair use policy or cap),
No fixed term contract (I can walk away anytime, not that I'd want to at that price).
You can pay more for more minutes if needed.
The reason I can do this is because giffgaff are owned by Telefonica (who own o2) and runs on o2's network (much like how Tesco Mobile operates). Because of this I haven't needed to unlock my HD7.
Just last night I downloaded a game demo that claimed to be 81MB. I couldn't do that every night on pretty much any other operator as they have data caps.
Buying the phone on PAYG and using giffgaff is way cheaper than the £40x24month deal that o2 would like to lock you in to. I don't understand why more people don't do it this way.
The cheeky bit - if you'd like to sign up for giffgaff, send me a pm so I can get giffgaff to send you the sim. This way, we both get £5 free credit! I don't mean for this to be a spammy post, so sorry if it comes across that way. I just think this is a good alternative to getting the HD7 sim-free or unlocking it, and probably the cheapest way overall.

I really really want an s730 with US 3G bands and I found that O2 has one out that looks like it's the wings200 but I don't see a way to buy just the phone from them. Does anyone know if they sell the phones separate or if there is any other place selling wings200s yet?
I thought that the US s730 was due out later in the summer / fall. Cannot remember though.
Got to wait
Hi svanheulen. I am also wanting to buy this phone. I cant even buy it unlocked right now from anywhere. Also, it just came out on UK for O2 and they are only selling this phone right now for business customers only, not yey for consumers. When they start selling for consumers, I am sure they will unlock it and sell them in online stores. This phone is Quadband and 3G Tri-band. So there's no need to wait for it to hit USA. Only if you want the warranty I guess (which is a major thing cause this phone is $$$). Anyway, hope this helps. Just got to wait till they start selling to consumers. Later...
I have one of these on order thru my work - O2 are currently saying 16th June. Will let the forum know what it's like when i get my hands on it.

Buying HD7 in the UK

Hi,
I can only find prices for the phone with a contract on mobiles.co.uk but these do not include any data plans and It has to be with O2 who are terrible with the 500mb data limit.
Does anyone know any other place to buy the phone with a contract?
Handtec is a good place to start, but they're not listing it yet, not even on contract.
It will be available from O2 on contract and on P&Go for £379.
Do you think I will be able to use my O2 simplicity sim on the PAYG HD7? I presume it will be locked to O2 too!
Yes, the phone is locked to O2.

What about using a GiffGaff sim as they are O2 so the sim will work.
They are great if you want to use a lot of data. I think it's free Internet until the end of December - and that's totally unlimited unlike the pathetic O2 500mb which Is pointless with a cloud based Windows 7 phone.

Any ideas how much O2 charge to officially unlock? I'm hoping there's no crappy O2 branding on the handset...
£15 pounds after 12 months on their network.
How about if you go PAYG - can you not just pay to get unlocked straight away?!

really hoping the costs for hd7 are correct on mobiles.co.uk because when i bought my hd2 the tarrif was completely different from what it had said online
And no unlimited or capped data in the mobiles.co.uk tariff? Fail!
I am on the Simplicity SIM only 30 day contract. Last yeah when I brought my Hd2 Outright (£379), I then had it unlocked for free by O2. Took 6 weeks to get the code but it didn't cost a thing.
I expect the same for the HD7.
It is really disappointing that this phone is only available on O2 with no enough data in the plan. Worse is to buy it pay as go and locked!
Will wait for it to be released somewhere else like expansys
You could just buy it and find have it unlocked somehow.
I am on simplicity too and intend to buy the PAYG version at 379.00 but not after having a play with it in store.
So did you ask for the unlock code during purchase or after 6 weeks. And do they send it through text or email.

Remember I am taslking about my HD2 last year. I ordered the unlock code the day after the phone arrived. It should have took 4 weeks for them to email it to me, but because it was over christmas it took longer.
I only needed the unlock code so I could use it whilst abroad on holiday.

[Q] HD7 Pro

Is the HD7 Pro no longer being released?
I checked the HTC site earlier today and it was there. Now I look and it's gone. The only one I can find is the HD7 (without the keyboard).
I spoke to Vodaphone earlier and they said they were expecting it to be released, but that was just the sales monkey so it could mean anything. I can't find it on any of the usual SIM-free sales sites, even on pre-order.
Any ideas anyone?
Yep I've noticed the same earlier, they just took it off from the website
I read somewhere few days ago it will be on the market later than the HD7 and the other HTC WP7 devices. They were saying it will be available in the UK just before Xmas
OK. What's going on with the HD7 Pro?
It's being released on 10th (this Thursday) yet all of the UK networks say they aren't stocking it. This is supposed to be the flagship HTC business phone, but if none of the networks are going to be stocking it how can it possibly be?
Maybe because it isn't an HD7 Pro.

Whether it's the 7 Pro or the HD7 Pro makes no difference. Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 and Orange aren't stocking it either according to their websites or their customer services departments. Clove Technology are showing it as in stock (SIM free obviously) on their website though.
Don't know about the Euro markets. Seems like O2 had it?
In the US it will be a Sprint exclusive.

Yes, I've seen that article Jim. Clove were saying in January that it would be released to the networks first. That was before they were listing it as coming on 10th. Now they're showing it as in stock. It would be very unusual for the networks to get second bite when the likes of Clove, who let's face it, aren't massive players in the market already have it.
According to Vodafone, the adverts for it on contracts with all the networks are sim free models that are unlocked and simply associated with a contract sim. They're all personal deals too. We have a business contract and so I want multiple devices on the same contract. None of these companies are offering business contracts.
I'm going to call HTC tomorrow and ask them which networks are going to be stocking it. I don't really expect them to tell me, their customer service is very non-commital, but it's worth a go.
Seems to be on the website to me..

On which website? I can see it on Clove (£360+VAT) and I can see it on the HTC website, but none of the networks have it.
You'll be able to get it from 3rd party retailers on contracts - probably mean you get the SIM free variant and not some vendor-locked version with tons of demo software on it

Most third party vendors won't do business contracts with multple handsets though. I've gone to SIM only (12 month deal) and bought one from Clove. The other handsets I'll get from Clove too when everyone decides what they want.
It still seems bizzare that the networks haven't got it at all. I wonder if that will be the same for the HTC 7 Surround?

Nope, it's the HTC 7 Pro. I bought one from Clove. I'm not massively impressed though. No SD slot, no sticky shift key, no phone key, and I really can't get to grips with the wp7 interface (although I accept this one is down to me!)
Give it a few days. You'll love it.
For sticky shift just double tap shift I do believe.

And from all the press releases bombarded at us, we know that the HTC HD7 is (in the UK) an O2 Exclusive handset

My imei code is 17 digit but the form only accepts 15, What do I do.
Just use the first 15 digits.
Alright, thanks.
I just got my unlock code and all works

No I didn't mean that. I meant has someone bought a PAYG HD7 then went to the O2 online form and pretend you bought a contract phone in order to try and cheat to see if they would still send an unlock code?

Whatch this space and I'll report back. I have a 30-day simplicity plan =and brought my phone on PAYG (the new name for buying outright from O2). I have put my request in against my Simplicity mobile number, I am expecting them to honour it under Simplicity so will report back.
I would like to update from my previous post to say I've officially eaten my hat.
As information for others out there, I am on a Sim Only Simplicity price plan and bought my HD7 on PAYG. I filled out the form using my simplicity account information and lo and behold, the following day I got my unlock code. And yes, I tested it and it works.
I have no intention of moving away from O2 at the moment as I signed up during the unlimited data times before they added a cap as well as treating me well, but it's nice to know the option is there later down the line in case.
I guess you chose pay monthly in the choose account option right? I have been on simplicity for around 15 months now so I guess I qualify for unlock as I pay monthly too, even though on simplicity and even though a PAYG handset?
My understanding is that it is an european legal requirement that if you want to use it on another carrier you can (you bought it, you are allowed to use it as you see fit etc.).
However you are still bound to your contract...
Gordon.
I was thinking of getting this device and getting it on PAYG.
Personally I don't really think any other network can offer as good deal for PAYG anyway

Unlock HTC HD7 on O2 PAYG

Hi Guys,
as some of you are aware if you purchase a 02 HTC HD7 (hd3) phone you can not request an unlock code before the 12 months of your PAYG term..... after 12months you would be able to request a unlock code.....
Now, as like me I cant wait to get my hands on this device, hence I'm ordering my phone from them on Monday 25th and unlocking the device on Tuesday !
I've used this site to unlock HTC phones ONLY and they always have worked, my latest one was my HTC HD2 from O2.

There are a lot of websites that can get your phone unlocked.

Thanks
@ curvyjomanjy: It cost me just over £16 to unlock from htcimeiunlock.
Paid by Paypal and received my unlock code within 10 minutes, excellent service.
The only branding is an O2 splash screen and an O2 theme ( which you can change ) other than that nothing.
Also O2 lock the search engine to yahoo, no google I'm afraid
O2 lock the search engine to Yahoo, or did you mean Bing?
The fact there is no option to change it from Yahoo, is disgusting. I'm actually surprised Microsoft allowed that under what is otherwise quite strict "Requirements" for using the OS.
if i get this phone, and unlock it, will o2 be able to tell? can they block the phone or anything silly like that? and if so what can i do?
and what would happen if there was a fault within 12 months, would o2 take back / exchange?

To be fair, O2 have been good with unlocking this phone through their own unlock scheme, unlike the Dell Streak exclusivity deal.
I've heard a lot of people requesting the code from O2 and getting it, but as I couldn't be done with waiting around, I got it down from a well known site on here RE the HD7 unlock for £16 or thereabouts.
By law, O2 can't stop you from unlocking, they can merely be a pain and not do it for you for free....so they're pretty good.
As for returns etc, they've been good with me in the past. You obviously have a few days to return it for a straight refund as well, which O2 honor where as some others try to fight this!
Overall, this is the one side of things O2 are normally very good for from my experience. Every other thing, they're a nightmare!
If I unlock it, how do I go about changing the network settings etc, does the phone automatically pick up the new connection settings ?

Well if there is a fault then you would need to deal with HTC and not O2 as HTC will be the ones to fix it. So unlocking it shouldn't matter.
