[Q] Mobile AP not working? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have flashed the latest 2.2 Cognition ROM, that enables Captivate to be used a wireless router. I can turn on the Mobile AP. My laptop is able to detect the wireless network and make connections to it. However, it only connects with limited connectivity and I will not be able to access internet from my laptop. I have both open and WPA2-PSK encryption, but neither of them works.
It seems that the laptop cannot get the wireless LAN address from the cell phone. Any solutions for that? Thanks for your help.
By the way, the USB tethering works totally fine.

Wireless Tether never works for me!

Hey guys so ive tried ever wireless tether app under the sun and none ever seem to work for me.
Im running Cyan's 4.01, PdaNet the wired version works flawlessly for me when i tether it to my computer, however done of the wireless ones EVER work for me, ive tried both aNetshare and the "Wireless Tether for Root" App that is floating around on the forums here, neither have ever worked for me
i have absolutely no problems connecting my computer to my G1 via wifi when using these programs, however the connection is always Peer to Peer and Local only, never internet and it never works
any ideas?
What OS are you trying to tether with?
Ensure your wifi network settings have DHCP set....
ALSO if you're wifi uses a NON-Microsoft Wifi settings software (e.g. Intel's or Broadcom) disable it and use the microsoft stack.
Are you trying to connect via Ad-hoc? Also are you using the WEP encryption? Does it give you any errors or just doesn't seem to connect?
The computer im connecting with is running Vista.
Im not using any form of WEP encryption is 100% open, it has no problems connecting peer to peer but the internet is inaccesible via tethering, it connects fine with no errors but it states local only with no internet access
Also as another side note, i use a program called SwiFTP which runs FTP via wifi so i can transfer file to and from my computer and G1 wirelessly , however that system never works, whenever i go to enable it, it says "Error Opening port, check your network connection" and the program does not work, ive tried changing different ports, i used the default port 2121 and it cannot open it, i also tried other random ones like 23 etc and it can never open a port or seem to work
Are you trying to connect via Ad-Hoc?
No, im using "Wireless Tether for Root Users" app downloaded off this forum
I think that is the problem. When you try to connect to the G1 on your computer, you have to set up the computer to connect via Ad-Hoc, not on the G1.
Not sure of the entire setup process, but go to the control panel and click on set up network connections (or something along that line) somewhere in the options of connection types there should be Ad-Hoc. You will have to enter the network name and confiure the WEP encryption, but it is pretty easy.
You should be able to figure it out from there. Let me know if you have any more problems.
access control option
have you checked the access control settings? if this is enabled, you have to manually allow the machines internet connection.
Hey, I had to apk's fo rthis the signed_andtether_1_52-pre2.apk did not work. The file labeled Signed_andtetehr_1_52.apk works everytime.
Firewall?
Sure your Vista Firewall is on? If so FORCE it off and try again...

Can't get to internet from tether...

Not sure if this is the right place for this...
Hi I have a G1 running the TheOfficial TMO DRC83 - US v2.2.1 + Expansion Pack and I can connect to the phone via WIFI tether, but I cannot get to the internet on the laptop that I am connecting from. I tried enabling Access Control and Authorizing the laptop, and I have tried disabling Access Control all together. I have tried connecting to an XP laptop, a Vista laptop, and an Ubuntu laptop. No glory... Help?
Sounds like you aren't using any software, which would be required for tethering.

I don't understand what you mean, I am using Wireless Tether for Root Users (my G1 is properly rooted), and I am trying to browse from Firefox on the laptop... I have also tried pinging a number of addresses. I have a good IP on the laptop, but it seems that the G1 is not forwarding the connection properly.
...scrap that...
misread
try downloading wifi tether. not wireless tether, WIFI TETHER. try this link
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
over on the right hand side there's the file section. download the one for htc, NOT GALAXY.
tethering wifi
try "anetshare" i already had a problems like u had at the beginning... the operating system included didn't works (DRC83)
thanks

[Q] Tethering working with 3g but not with wifi

Hello,
I am using gueste rom with spica kernel, but I think it is independent of rom/kernel.
When I have internet on 3G on my o2x, I connect it to my laptop and use usbtethering. It works.
When I have internet on wifi on my o2x, I do the same thing but I don't have internet on my laptop.
Wireshark shows that my laptop send packet through my phone and I can ping my phone. But I can't ping website. However dns works (I can see dns packet). On my phone, internet works well.
I don't really know how does tethering work. Maybe it uses iptables/nat ? How can I have working tethering? Thank you.
What WiFi device is your phone connected to and why can't your laptop just connect direct to that? (I'm assuming the laptop has wifi). It's also possible to set your phone up as a WiFi Access Point, that would allow you to connect your laptop wirelessly. As I understand, however, if you use your phone as an Access Point, it won't be able to connect to the internet via WiFi - eg, you could be in field with good 3G, connect your laptop via WiFi to the phone and then surf via WiFi and out via the phone's 3G signal.
The author of Gueste does warn about using spica's "performance packs" for stability issues.

It is a public wifi emitted by a router. It is possible that the router blocks tethering?

I could, the reason is that my wifi signal is weak but at my door. It is just more convenient that my phone is near my door and connected to my laptop. Moreover, I'm studying networks and this issue arouses my curiosity

chromecast setup issue

Hey guys quick question just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue with their chromecast setup . This is my second chromecast having the same issue.
I cannot get my phone or computer to complete the setup process. I get an error. See attached picture.
It sees the cast initially and says needs to be setup then after trying to setup I get the error.
Thanks in advance

Is it setup in your WiFi on your phone?
I can choose to connect to it on the wifi network settings on my phone yes.
Also it shows up in the chromecast app as it needs to be set up
Phone : note 3
Chromecast serial : 3A08xxxxx
Router: D link dir-826l (USING 2.4GHZ band to try and connect)
Picture shows the initial screen i get when opening the app and trying to setup.
The number corresponds to the number on the TV but i can never get further than this.

Try rebooting your router. This helped me with connection problems in the past.

I don't think you can setup the Chromecast with your phone. I believe you need a PC to do it. When it's setting up, your PC's WiFi should switch to the Chromecast only; it'lll have some SSID with Chromecast in it. After you confirm the correct Chromecast, it'll do it's setup, and switch the PC WiFi back your LAN.
The error about making sure the Chromecast is nearby means, to me, that the device was not able to connect to the Chromecast. And I think you'll need something that can handle an Ad Hoc setup.
You can set it up with the phone according to the instructions.
I also tried it with the computer and ended up with a similar error during setup.
My next thought is that it could be a issue with the router so I disabled that router and tried an old net gear router I had laying around and that gave me the same issue. From bother the phone and from my laptop (alien ware m11x)
I'm running out of ideas to try
Thanks for the help guys.

Don't trust the status in the Chromecast application - check what it says on the TV.
Try using the HDMI extender
Move Chromecast closer to the router, or if it's within 5 feet, farther from the router (constructive and destructive interference)
Move Chromecast away from other Bluetooth and WiFi devices if at all possible
If running setup on a PC, be sure the PC has only the wireless enabled, and no VPN connection running. Multiple adapters and VPN have potential to confuse the setup process.
Make sure your phone is connected to your normal WiFi first
Be sure that MAC filtering and AP isolation are not enabled in your AP/router.
Try a factory reset

Actually it's the exact opposite unless your PC has a WiFi card. It requires any device that can run the setup file and that device MUST have WiFi.
In this case I have to wonder if the OP is using a custom ROM. I believe you need to be able to make an AdHoc connection with the Chromecast for setup. Some custom Roms don't support this.

If this is the case, nothing is mentioned in/about the Windows PC app.
EDIT: My CC is setup but I installed the PC app and it won't even open and later shows a Turn On WiFi box.

AFAIK, it's a standard access point connection, but yeah, custom ROMs could be problematic for other reasons as well.

Yep in order for the setup utility to work on a PC the PC must have a WiFi card in order to communicate via AD HOC with the Chromecast.
It uses AdHoc to control the unit until it has been configured to work with the available AP. Once it is connected to the AP you can use the PC to stream to it without WiFi as long as it is wired to the same network.
But Setup of Chrome requires WiFi. And of course a device that has a compatible setup program to run.
I have Dlink dir 655 and got th same phone . I enabled multicast on dlink router and it worked. Probably after i restarted the router used the chromecast app and connected it smooth
:good:

Yes once set up it is a standard AP connection but to set it up to connect to an AP for the first time requires an Ad Hoc connection with the device running the setup program.
Ok thanks for the help guys I'll give another go tonight. Also just for keeping up to date my phone is not rooted and is running a stock rom obviously.
I'll report back to any results.

I'm having the same problem. I am running a custom ROM on my phone though. I do not have a laptop, only a desktop PC without WiFi.
EDIT: After reading some of the advice in this thread, I went back to my stock ROM to see if I could set it up then. It worked instantly. For me it was the ROM I was on.

Needing to have WiFi on the PC could be an issue for some. Since this point isn't mention anywhere on Google's Chromecast pages that I could find, I'd be annoyed if I found this out after purchase!

It is sort of mentioned...It does say connect via WiFi....
Truth is this setup procedure is not all that different than any other Wireless Appliance you would buy.
Wireless Print Servers, WiFi Boosters, all work on the same setup principle.
Unless they can be wired directly into a network it is assumed you will connect to them via AdHoc to then set them up for use with your AP.
There is no way an appliance can connect to an AP that is protected without Human help (would defeat the purpose of having Protection if it could wouldn't it? Anything could do that then). SO barring a Direct connection with a device to set it up the only way to do so is via AdHoc Wireless mode that then lets you communicate to set it up for Infrastructure mode.

I just checked with both my phone and laptop. It's a standard Access Point (Infrastructure) connection for setup. Makes sense, as you noted previously that not all devices and ROMs support Ad Hoc mode.

Devices with can use WPS. But both the AP and the device must support WPS, so much easier and more compatible to either allow a temporary open AP as Chromecast does, or use an Ad Hoc connection.
I had the same problem I was able to get it to connect with laptop on wifi not hard wire once that works then you can use your phone to work chrome cast

Yes, it does say that but also states that it's Windows compatible. Connecting to a laptop is mentioned which means anything but a real old one would have WiFi. They clearly have left out mentioning Desktop PC. After setup then using Chrome, a Desktop PC can be used unless you have WiFi card or a WiFi USB adapter which I actually have on my Samsung Smart TV.

Adhoc networking

Well I been helping my sick aunt and she doesn't have WiFi and my phone does not have service so I depend on WiFi. Well I tried to create an adhoc network and my phone sees the network but can't connect. I have heard tell that adhoc is not able to be connected too but searching around has not found an exact result. I have the CyanogenMod Mod 10.2 android 4.3.1 on my phone. I did see something about a WPA supplement fix. Is there a fix for this and if so how. Would be great to be put on the proper course. And I did search. But I didn't find a thread regarding this.

When you say you created an ad-hoc network, do you mean you are trying to have a laptop that is connected to a wired network broadcast its wi-fi so your phone can connect by wi-fi to the laptop (and thus the internet)?

Used my dlink dwa-130 USB dongle to create an adhoc network on a desktop computer. The desktop has a satellite connection. I was trying to share the connection from the desktop over the adhoc network to my phone with internet connection sharing. But my phone can't connect to the network but sees the security type and ssid.
