Angry Birds Now On Eris - Droid Eris Themes and Apps

Just received an email from Rovio basically stating that Angry Birds is now supported on the Eris! It now shows up in the Market for us. Downloading now.
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App

Yup, it works. Runs a little slow so far though.

me too! me too! taking forever to download but i cant wait for a full functioning game

This makes me happy! Just downloaded it. Doesn't run very smooth at all. But none the less it makes me happy to see the birds and pigs on my screen!

So, I assume they resized it for the screen? That's the only issue I had with "forcing" it on my Eris. It was still playable enough for me to master the beta.

If resizing it would fix the background not showing up then yes. Unfortunately now that it displays it's extremely laggy I would almost say the forced version was more fun to play.
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App

Yes it sucks now and it makes me sad

+1...
i guess our little Eris' can't handle the textures.... might have to push the old one and deal with 'snow'....

Agree. Played better without all the textures working. And besides, the invisible background added to the challenge!

Maybe if enough of us complain they will fix the "laggyness".

Wonder if we could just strip down the apk and make sort of like an 8 bit version. Or at least one with less demanding graphics. They also added the full video ads into this one and more live ads to the game. I feel like the live rendering of those bog down the game a lot. I was more happy with the lder version i almost beat every little sans the background it never really bothered me because i could always just figure the lvl out through trial and error. Now it's not even playable.

Turning on Airplane Mode improves performance a little bit, at lease the ads are gone.

Or install adfree if your rooted. Still some lag but not nearly as bad.

Amazing, makes a huge difference, still a little laggy but now at least playable.
I've noticed it always shows as installed on the SD card despite the fact I don't use apps2sd or anything like that. If thats true I wonder if an SD card better than the stock class 2 would make things any better?
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App

For those that are dealing with the lag.. like me, i've posted the older 1.3.5: http://www.mediafire.com/file/2ehvwqbegrurbe7/com.rovio.angrybirds135.apk
and also there is a user that customized v1.4.2 with some tweaks and ads removed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838184
Hope this helps. i've been addicted to this game...

It may. I use the custom apps2sd that was created for 2.1 and older ROMs and bought a class 6 16GB card (bought that before i found out there is very little difference in performance between the Class 4 and the Class 6). Can't tell the difference in speed between the apps running from the built in RAM and the apps running from the SD card.
Don't see why you shouldn't see similar results with Google implementation of apps2sd. But try installing it to your phone directly first and compare before you plunk any cash down.

Question: I can't install angry birds! It downloads from the market and then says installing for about 2 seconds then says "installation unsuccessful." Any ideas? I'm running kaosfroyo

I thought I was the only one with the not installing problem.... I hope someone can answer that cause I've used the custom installed but the some of the structures in the puzzels were just white. Making it hard to play... I saw that it was in the market, but it wont install. This is mu first post so please be nice. SPELLING AND OTHER ERRORS. lol
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App

First thing is to check to make sure you have enough available space on your phone's internal storage: Settings --> SD card & phone storage. Angry Birds takes a good 14-15MB of space, fairly large for an android app.
If you have apps2sd running i'd recommend using Root Explorer to check how much storage you have left in your 'data/app' folder.

i was able to install it by doing this.
put the apk somewhere on your phones internal storage
unmount sd card
use file manager, astro root yand, to locate file and install that way
mount sd card
i have heard some people having issues doing it this way, but since i dont use app2sd i havent had any issues
hope this helps

I just flashed kaos froyo and now no mater where or how i install the .apk angry birds refuses to install.

Speed Increase With Deleting Apps?

I saw the huge list of safe apps to delete, and I am getting my Droid X on monday, so I was just wondering if deleting the apps causes the speed to increase? I read a lot of reviews saying the Droid X has some lag unfourtantely but does it speed up when you delete all those applications?
I have the incredible right now and use a froyo basic ROM, I turn off all animations and delete all apps that aren't necessary, I just care about the speed of the phone. Do you see a speed increase if the applications are deleted?
I don't think you'll see a noticeable speed increase. The X does have lag in some places, notably the lock screen (big wtf here), but I don't think it's that much worse than most other android phones on stock roms.
I have an incredible and just got my X on Friday. I have noticed that the X is significantly slower than the incredible (both running stock ROMs). I've also found that the X is buggier. I've never had a random reboot on the Inc and it seems to happen all the time on the X while wifi is on. Also, i've noticed that it's generally much slower in response to requested actions.
The most redeeming thing about the X is the AWESOME screen!!!
I'm hoping for a new release soon to help with the slowness, reboots, wifi, and responsiveness.

The pro for all of the things you've mentioned there is that it seems to all be software related. HTC obviously has had more time to perfect Sense then Motorola has with it's new Blur-hybrid. I think once the software issues get worked out, the hardware for the X will outshine the Inc.
Just use launcher pro instead of the stock launcher and the entire system will run faster.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Doesn't using launcher pro on top of blur make it use even more resources?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
it does, but if you remove everything off of your blur, then launch and use the other launcher it will use quite a bit more ram, (i see about a jump of 20 to 30 megs though i haven't done any precise measuring)
But I do notice a bit of a speed increase, part of the reason could be you can control the speed of the animations, and if you bump it up a little bit, even if it lags on showing you the animation it's not as noticeable because you can get there faster. (if that makes sense)
Well then if its mostly software related then I'll wait for a couple firmware updates or 2.2 before I start *****ing
ANy tips on how to speed the droid X up anyone?
Here is a tip that i found out:
On boot, go into the running apps/services, and kill:
Skype MObile, Social networking, and backup assistant authorization
It frees up memory AND the best part, you dont have to uninstall the programs and risk messing up ur phone..
Just have to do it on every reboot, big whoop..

Startup Auditor - It's a paid app but worth the money.
I just tried launcher pro on top of fully configured blur and pro was still smother than blur. So since it isn't the phone I'm holding out hope for 2.2/blur update fixes this. Since that's around the corner I'll wait for it before converting to pro.

Autokiller is a full featured, free app to do this.
Launcher Pro made a world of difference on my incredible, zero lag whatsoever..
I like many people thought about getting the Droid X, i dont have a complaint with its size whatsoever moreso then other issues... when i tested the demo phone in the verizon store it seemed incredibly slow.. yes i know it was a demo phone and people probobly mess with it all day long but still it was like having a G1 all over again..
Secondly is the lack of root access.. with the encrypted bootloader it is probobly going to be near impossible to flash a custom recovery and therefor custom roms are also going to be a hassle, i love having my fully unlocked incredible with a S-Off Nand on the way.. having custom roms and overclock kernals changes the feel of the phone completely
Thirdly and last is the 2.2 update... i saw the 2.2 update news article on the Droid X and the guys Quadrant Benchmarks with it were 800 something? That seems redicilous because my Quadrant Benchmarks with my 2.2 incredible are 1400s and Linpacks are in the low 40s
Those benches are showing the droid x on 2.1, with some other phones on 2.2, which puts the droid x in the highest tier of performance. Once froyo is on the dx, youll see scores almost surely above the incredibles (because of the gpu) and very high linpack scores.
XDA App = Pwnage
Autorun Killer does the job, but you need to be rooted.
AutoKiller on the same website will help you keep your memory cleaner by automatically killing tasks. That'll improve performance if your phone is running low on memory (which can happen if all the stock processes are running).
Edit: Oops, didn't see the thread has second page
personally i rooted my phone installed root explorer renamed alot of junk on my phone from .apk to .bak. my phone is def snappier. i also turned off the animated backgrounds. i also use advanced task killer which is the main reason i started, in a sense, uninstalling apps the safe way. seeing all of those items running before i killed them was killing me. so i would try doing that and also turning off wifi etc when not needed.
May not be the best scores, but this is after renaming only a few apps.

do you have app-sideloading enabled? if you're using liberated rom R004 or higher it should have an app to enable it.
if so, try downloading it to your SD Card and install from there through your phone.

yeah it lags more in the levels after you get the fat black birds. and the animation of their explosion is completely missing. not a huge issue though.

if you intend on playing it for long periods, go to settings and turn off your internet/data connection before.. it stops the ads from appearing and *almost completely* reduces the lag.

Angry Birds making me angry

Ive got a non-rooted android 2.1 Droid Eris. Ive downloaded the angry birds full APK to my phone, one from getjar and one from a mirror. They are both in my downloads folder on my SD card. Whenever i try to install either file, the phone says im out of space. I uninstalled and cleaned up alot of stuff. It seems i only have 31mb of free space but i dont think that would be a limitation. I dont know how big this damn game is but id think 30mb is enough. Why am i having this issue and how do i get about it? Im now less interested in playing the game and much more interested in not letting it defeat me haha.
One work around is to use apps2sd. That'll install it for sure. That's the only way I managed to install large games like this and Krazy Kart Racing.
Keep in mind Angry Birds is not fully compatible with mdpi devices. It'll install but you'll experience the dreaded white background/terrain as well as some lag on certain levels.
*Edit* Never mind. I see you're not rooted. Disregard.

Let me make sure I have this right

OK, I am going to be getting a couple NCs for the wife and I. So I have been doing a lot of reading and want to make sure I have a handle on evrtything. I have decided that CM7 is the way to go. If I am understanding correctly I basically create a CM7 image on an SD Card (cheap Sandisk seems to work best???) and then I can run it from the SD card without installing it on the internal memory of the NC. That way I can pull the SD card, reboot and have a stock NC. Is that right? Will the performance suffer from running it from the SD card? Are there benefits to installing on the internal memory? Also, if I do install it to the internal memory, how do you use it as a normal NC? Do you just get the Android Nook app? How does that compare to the actual Nook software? Do you lose any functionality? My wife will use hers primarily as an e reader whereas mine will be a tablet first. Does anyone have experience using different browsers like Skyfire and Opera? Those are what I use a lot on my phone. I have seen the name Dolphin HDused alot, but I don't know anything about it. I am sorry for all the questions and if my terminology is not 100% accurate. I am, as the welcome video says; a noob.

That is correct; with one exception. CM7 will mount the "Media" partition, and changes there will be reflected on the stock OS (this partition just stores your files, pictures, music, etc; nothing related to the system).

Yes, performance will suffer. I used to run from SD card, until i finally gave up and tried internal. Internal is much faster, and of course makes it easier to use you SD card for pure storage.

From what i have seen, you will lose the "Read to me" functionality, and the look and feel of the market version is different of that of the stock version. But, by using CM7 (or rooting stock), you can gain access to Kindle and Google books, which kind of makes up for it.

Opera is by far the best browser; it is the only browser with renders web pages with the GPU; this is what allows smooth scrolling and page views (like the iPad has). Dolphin is nothing more than a skin of the stock browser, and isn't worth worrying about.

The Android Nook app loses:
* Read To Me
* Shelves
* A quick shortcut to the current book you're reading
It gains a couple of features: a fancy page-turn animation, and a true black & white "night" mode. (The stock reader's night mode is more of an off-white on dark gray, if I remember right.)
If your wife has a lot of nook books, she may really miss the shelves feature. Without it all books are listed on one page, ordered by Title, Author or Most Recent. That's most recently purchased, not most recently read.
With no shortcut, every time you return to the app you have to scroll through all the books you have downloaded to find the one you're currently reading. That could be annoying if you've got a few dozen or more loaded.
I get around both problems by using a third-party reader. But to use it, I have to strip the DRM from the books I own, which is at best a gray area legally.
Most people who read a lot will probably get more out of a stock nook, or better still, a nootered nook. If it's nootered (rooted), you get all the features of the stock reader, as well as the ability to download any number of other applications including Kindle and Overdrive (the library lending app.)

Thank you very much for the input. Your answers have highlighted the fact that I need to do a lot more research. I am not even sure what the NC can do out of the box. While the wifey will use it primarily as a reader, she also wants to be able to play games and download apps. Can this still be done on the stock OS? Can you install a different browser (opera) on the stock OS? I've seen the term "rooted stock" but haven't read up on it much since I figured I'd just have to root them to do what we both want. I'm guessing "rooted stock" is somewhere between being rooted and keeping the stock OS. Would this allow using the native reader intetface while still allowing access to apps via the Android market? If I can get it so she has a nice browser, can play games (Angry Birds, etc) and keep the native reader (which she really likes) that would be perfect. BTW, before anyone starts yelling "USE THE SEARCH NOON" like they do on some forums I have visited, I know these answers are probably all on this forum somewhere and I am continuing to research on my own. I have been and will be reading a ton of old posts, etc. But, it is also helpful to have one thread to list all of the questions that pop into my head.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I was new to Android a couple months ago and hesitant to root so I decided to put CM7 on an sdcard. I bought a cheap card and the thing worked but it was agonizingly slow. I bought a Sandisk 8GB class 4 and it works GREAT - very fast. I have never overclocked (haven't gotten the nerve for that yet) and it is very speedy for my needs. I later rooted stock which is what I recommend for your wife. You put a launcher on (I like zeam) and then you have your B&N shelves and access to the Android market as well. BTW, you can also get the Amazon Appstore and check it out daily because they put up a free app every day - very cool.
Good luck with your decision. I love my Nook!
Cool, so it looks like it'll be CM7 for me and nootered for her.
One more question since I have your attention. Is there a way to tether the NC to my Droid X and connect to the internet? My Droid X is totally stock and I have no desire to root it or mod it in any way. I have used PDAnet to tether to my laptop, so I'm looking for something similar to that.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I can tether my Win Mobile phone (getting an Android phone as soon as my contract runs out!) to my NC. My phone creates an ad hoc connection and I had to make a small change on the Nook to get it to work. I'm pretty sure you will have no problem. Just search and you will find the details specific to your phone.
The only (wireless) tethering you can do WITHOUT rooting is the paid Verizon service. No other wireless rooting will work (all need superuser). I gotta ask though - any reason you don't want to root the X? Its not really anything different from rooting your nook..

I guess it's really just fear. If I brick my phone, I am royally screwed. If I brick the Nook, it would suck, but it's more of a toy anyway. I know it's probably very safe and easy, but I just keep thinking of the horror stories I read when I thought about rooting my Q9m back in the day. That said it is very likely that once I root the Nook, I will end up rooting my phone. Baby steps

Disappearing apps

Well, one minute apps were there, then the next minute I couldn't find them.
It looks like transferring apps from the system memory to the sdcard is the cause of this. I didn't have this problem when I had Tbolt. Can somebody duplicate this problem?
Also, I managed to crash the system while copying 300+ files from one folder in sdcard to another folder in internal memory . The screen went black and buttons weren't responding. I had pull the battery out to reboot.
Moto worked on this phone for additional 9 months and still has bugs like these? All these are not good at all.
I had similar problems. After installing apps from the market, I could use them, but after reboot some would be gone. One app that was giving me fits was the xda premium app. I think I reinstalled our about 5 times.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was playing the free version of Tetris that EA put on the Market, and I got a call while I was playing.
I picked up the call, finished it, and when I went back to the Home screen I held down the Home button to go to recently used apps and Tetris wasn't there. So I went into my App list and... Tetris wasn't there.
I went into the Market, and it said it was never installed.
Either I hallucinated the half hour before a phone call interrupted my psychotic perceptions of tetriminos, or the phone deleted the app all on its own.
Really strange.
I too had the same problem. Just download again and they stick.

The weird thing is, when my apps disappeared and I had to re-install them, they didn't need my usernames or pws to be re-entered. So it seems the data was still there.

Happening to me as well, I just moved everything back from the card onto the phone
I was able to fix the apps disappearing by going into manage applications then the media area tab and making sure that no apps were checked. Any that were I moved back to the phone.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the Bionic, like the D3, is configured differently than other Android phones. The /sdcard partition is actually the internal storage... part of the 16GB the advertise as internal. The removable SDcard is /sdcard-ext. Not sure if that is a contributing factor. I've not seen that problem but I'll keep an eye out for it.
I'm coming from a og droid, so moving apps to the sd card is like second nature to me. I feel i just have to do it even though this phone has so much internal srorage in comparison. Is it possible that the problem is the sd card itself?
I didn't think about that, so when you move them is it going to the sd ext or the internal storage (sd). I did notice the sd and sd ext are different.
The same thing happens on reboot for me as well. I just go into titanium and restore each time which is a pain in the a$$.

so unlike other android phones currently in the market, MOTO made the real sdcard (sdcard-ex) almost obsolete. It's only dedicated for media storage and sharing.

This is so utterly ridiculous. I had to put all of my apps BACK onto my phone. Why even offer the extra storage if we can't use it to store what we'd like. I don't keep that much media on my phone.
Anyone tried another sd card? I'm thinking about wiping the one from my old phone and putting it in this bionic.

I have a 32gb I pulled from Tbolt, and I formatted it. One thing odd though, Titanium only reports 29gb available instead of 31~32 after the format.
