[Q] Applications to SD card - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok. i searched and i know that there a lot of places to find out how to do it, but I am a bit confused.
I somehow never got onto the apps2sd bandwagon cos i didnt know how to divide my SD card (32GB)..what's the ideal recommended proportions for ext3 and FAT32?
also, i'm on CM at the moment, and it has an option to select where to install apps to and also you can move apps to the SD card. is this the same as apps2sd or is it less efficient?
all this time wht i have been doin is manually selecting where to install the apps through the ROM options, and my SD card is FAT32.
can anyone help me?
i'm also thinkin about upgrading to gingerbread if and when it comes.. so would the ext3 partition work with it?

Current there are 2 ways to implement App2SD, one is Froyo version, which puts applications on SD card Fat32 partition, another one is Ext version, which requires an ext partition on your SD card to store applications.
If you're using official CM release, I think it has no support to App2Ext by default.
I noticed that the option you mentioned does not always work, I put it on "Internal" but sometimes new applications still are installed to SD card. The option is not necessary to enable App2SD feature. You can always goto application management and manually move applications between internel memory and SD card.

i actually find it happening the other way for me..when i specify to install on the SD card, it still installs on the internal...and im constantly running out of space..and its hard to decide what apps to move to the SD card, and some come up with alerts of how system updates wont happen and therefore it cant move it to the SD card..

the way I do it is, tick "Allow moving any application"
then goto application management, sort by size
look from top of list, move big size, not frequently used, non auto-boot, non-widget applications to SD card.

yeah..i think i also should do that...flashing CM nightly 242 atm...i jus hope gingerbread comes out soon..tho im sure i will end up using it fr a bit and then goin back to CM until they put out a gingerbread based ROM

apps2sd on dwang!!

hi guys...
i have searched over and over how to make apps2sd work on dwang but there are some answers however no straight answer following. i am sorry if theres any other post in the forum that i may have missed.
so i have the amon-ra recovery...
i have partitioned my sd card (2gig)
32 linux swap
400 ext2 (already upgraded to ext3)
rest is fat32..
now when i goto sd card &phone storage.. i see sd card (following total space and etc..) and i see internal phone storage.
now when i download a app.....i see decrease on my internal memory. i even tried selecting move apps-cache to sd card from recovery mode.
i am not understanding wats going on. i need some help please!
once again sorry if theres already some post about this.
Its just cache from market its not relelated to apps2sd.It builds up over time.Do a search in market for cache and look for the cache mover, so it will be on your sd instead.
-Happy new year
isnt A2SD automatic on dwangs? usually all you need is a second partition in order for it to work...
hey i thought it was automatic too but it doesnt seem like. how can i verify if the ext3 has some usage? and i downloaded the cache mover now it took up so much space on my sd card. even after that i downloaded a app and it still seem to affect my internal memory! please help. i had my sd card partitioned and emptied (formatted) even before installing the dwang rom.....
You know its being used because you would have like 20~ free internal mem
Ace42 what u mean...i didnt download alot of apps. when i flashed with a full wipe i had abt 81 mb rite now i have abt 68 after having installed abt 5 apps so it means maybe not working i am guessing... and even after moving cache i dun see any difference in internal storage...
is there anyone who can be of some assistance plz.....?
Try doing the flash process again but leave it at EXT2 instead of upgrading.
but when i do flash...shouldnt i have a second sd card displayed on my phone in setting? coz when i did cyanogen i had two sd card option. first one being the sd card. second one was unavailable until partitioned the drive. and i was able to see how much space is left after i download and install an app....on the second sd card option. however with dwang i dun have that

Apps2SD Issues on FroYo?

So today I managed to go from CM5 to stock to update 1 to FroYo; and on my SDcard I have it partitioned for 1GB of apps on the linux partition...
I didn't mind losing them all since I can get them all back via appaware; but I'm having issues moving them to SD as was shown in the froyo demo. The option's there in manage applications; but it's greyed out.
Any ideas as to why it's doing this/how to fix it?
I'm using the stock 4gb class 2 card that came with my nexus, and it's partitioned for 1gb of ext3 for apps2sd.
Tips?
I'm having the same issue.. my SD is 100% fat32.
The installing apps on the SD card in FroYo isn't really A2SD. The developers of each individual app has to support installing their app on an SD card. That was mentioned during the day 2 keynotes. So until the developer of your apps enables that function you won't be able to install on the SD Card.
yea that's my question also,I also have partitioned my card, just tell me what config should I keep to store apps back to sd card in froyo.. or if there is any method to completely wipe all partition in my card, I am using 8gb card..
No partition needed, just wait for the apps to be updated to support it.

Confused on Apps2SD

So I am on Kang-o-rama FroYo. There is a method that I had used that used the modinstalllocation on rodriguez that allowed me to selectively put apps on the SD card. I think I like this better than using Apps2SD from the kangorama post using EXT here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6973422&postcount=2139. There is the other one there as well but that one says widgets won't work if you use spare parts. I'm so confused. If I want to use spare parts, do I have to do anything to the SD card? Is there anyone that can just help me understand the options? I do see the Spare Parts switch to "external" and I think that is the same as modinstalllocation because I can go "move to SD card". What happens during a wipe though? Will it wipe the apps off the SD card? What about a ROM upgrade/switch? Also, if I switch to internal, to all the apps switch back automatically?

partitioned 8G SD card, but don't see change on Internal memory

My HTC Hero is running low on memory space (I have Apps2sd installed also, but it can't move all apps), so I partitioned my 8G SD card with ROM manager, with 32M swap, 1g ext4 and the rest being FAT32.
After reboot, I still only see 160M of internal memory from settings, which is the original, and about 6.1G on SD card. That means it already took out the 1G, but why I don't see it as internal memory? Is it because of ex4? I tried ex3 too and got the same.
I have backed up the original SD card, but have not copied it back to the partitioned SD card yet. Anything else I need to do in order to see the expanded Internal Memory?
Thanks in advance!

Your sdcard space has nothing to do with internal memory. What you need to do if you want to have more space is 1 or 2 of a few different things: go into root explorer, move apps from /data/app to /system/app; Use Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions
either of those should give you more internal memory.

I read that after partitioning the SD card, apps will be installed into the ext3/4 partition automatically. But that's not the case after I partitioned. Then I found I need to install app2sd+ instead of app2sd. Is that true?
Where do I download app2sd+ ? do I need to flash a different ROM? I am having CM 6.2.0 now.
Thanks!

CM6.2 has native apps2sd. Go to settings>CM settings>Application settings and select "Allow application moving", then select "External" for Isntall location.
Also, you can move apps that don't install or allow swap to the SD via Titanium Backup.
Just be warned that any apps that have widgets lose widget functionality if you move them to the SD.

Does it install ALL apps to SD card? I thought it's the same as App2sd, only moving those apps that specified by the developers as movable. And there are many apps that can't be moved to external.
My understanding is by partitioning the SD card, the EXT2/3/4 part is considered as part of the "internal memory" so that ALL apps will be installed here, thus free the real internal memory and lead to better performance.
The problem is it doesn't work after partitioning and I read that it needs app2sd+ or app2sd EXT to work, and I am having trouble finding them...
Thanks any way.

Not all, but most. Like BrandoKC said, you can move more apps to the sd using Titanium Backup. Don't move anything with a widget you use, or it won't work anymore.

Are you talking about the paid version of Titanium? The free version doesn't have this feature.

CM's built-in Application Management can only move those apps that you can move by app2sd. I don't see such feature on the free Titanium Backup. My 160M internal memory is constantly under 20M of free memory.
I heard all the good things about using partitioned SD card. I have partitioned my card but that alone doesn't seem to work. it seems I also need to install some customized ROM on top of my CM 6.2 so that apps will be automatically installed on SD?
Thanks!
The free version of titanium does have it. I just used it on my fiances phone last weekend.

[Q] apps2sd whats the downside of running the apps from sd card

samsung galaxy SL-GT-I9003, running froyo 2.2.1
Since froyo allows moving apps2sd I have got a sandisk 32gb class 4 micro sd card & wonder if there is any downside to run an app from the sd card?
Should I partition the sd card for my data & apps separately?
If we update to a new ROM or firmware, and the APPs are on the SD Card do we have need to back up APPs ever again?
all my apps are on my sd card, there isnt really a downside, you dont need to make a partition.
The only thing is. if you accidently format your sd card, your apps will go. it saves memory on the phones internal card, allowing for a quicker response.
Just be sure to make a backup with titanium backup.
I do a backup every week, because im a constant flasher, but you can just make a backup and store it on your pc, just to be safe.
Flashing a new rom wont delete your apps unless you do a WIPE version or do it thru Odin. but if you do flash a new rom just make a backup anyway it only takes 5 mins.
If i Helped, Why not say Thanks ??

so you mean to say the apps are on the external card but each application save its cache on internal phone sd card.
There are some apps that although you can move them to SD do not work properly when you do. Among these are many home screen widgets and some live wallpapers.
Oh I didnt know that, good I will keep that in mind.

Yes i forgot to mention that, but the ones you want on your homescreen like live wallpapers, music player whatever just leave on internal.
And yes i think the cache (or something like that) is saved to the internal, because when i remove my sd card, my apps still show but just wont launch....
Read many other post & checked my external sd card it does not have any of the moved apps, instead apps2sd moves the files to internal sd only.
So wondering whats the real use of apps2sd when you have limited internal sd space in my case only 1.51gb, I thought it is moving the apps to external sd which is 32 gb card I bought for this purpose only.
My phone shows 181mb left only.
