Hey All,
I'm having a very hard time deciding whether to get the HTC HD7 or the Samsung Focus and was wondering if any of you could help out.
I'm going to post this in the Samsung Focus Forum as well to get their side of things so I mainly want to know from the HD7 owner's side of the story.
HTC HD7
Large 4.3" Screen (the main reason I want to get it)
Really nice design - mainly screen (Focus has too much plastic around the screen)
16GB Built in memory with option to void warranty and upgrade
Kickstand which will be useful since there are no docks available.
Dual LED flash - not too important for me as I hear the HD7 camera isn't too great.
Heavier than the Focus - seriously, I do prefer a denser phone
Comes with free GPS Navigation Software.
Samsung Focus
Amazing 4" SAMOLED display (although it is smaller than the HD7). I have a Zune HD and the quality of that screen is amazing.
Design is OK, a little plasticky for my taste
Very light, this is an advantage (even though I prefer a denser phone) as it is less noticeable in your pocket.
8GB NAND memory which appears to be much, much faster than the HD7 with the option to upgrade to 40GB with a 32GB card without voiding warranty. 16GB is probably enough for me but 8GB is definitely too small.
According to reviews, has an excellent camera.
Now my decision is even harder because I will not be able to see the devices until I buy one as I live in South Africa and will be getting a relative to send the device out to me. I will be immigrating to the US in less than a years time so if I get the HD7 I will be going with T-Mobile and if I get the Focus I will be going with AT&T as my SP. (Is one better / cheaper than the other?)
I hope you guys can provide me with some information to sway me either way

I kind of understand how you are feeling right now because I was also in this situation and when WP7 launched on 11th October I wanted to buy the Omnia 7. It depends what you really need/want from a phone.
Personally , I am not into S-AMOLED screens because of the lower sharpness and I am also not too overwhelmed by having the guy next to me reading all my messages etc. Vibrant colors is cool but you'll get bored of this pretty fast.
The official micro-SD support one the most important advantages if you ask me and NAND is indeed faster BUT I also think apps are not yet optimised for HD7's memory and might see an update soon ,because let's face it, the hardware is there and it can help.
Also a larger battery the 1500 one but the S-AMOLED screen kinda compensates the bigger battery and good sAR values but honestly I wouldn't mind having a 1500 in my HD7
For me, when I pay big cash for a phone I want to have a good-looking one and I might refuse a bit better specs for a gorgeous design which HD7 clearly has.
So, if you want a phone that simply has the specs go for the Samsung, if you want a sexy phone with a BIG display go for the HD7.
P.S. Are you saying you will be buying it in an almost 1 year time ? Ouch , by then you will have a better OS and other devices as well

I'm not necessarily after the best specs, I just want to be happy with my decision and I will never be happy until I research all of the options and am sure that I know what I want to do.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about the viewing angles (would also rather have poor angles so that I have my phone to myself). I just noticed in the Focus videos that the display seems almost surreal - the visuals just appeared on the top of the device as if there was no screen.
I'm also wondering about the speed of the two devices. If I get a Focus I will most likely be adding a SD card to it anyway so it'd be interesting to know the performance changes when a card is added to the Focus.
Yeah, as long as the battery lasts me the whole day I'm fine. Will charge it at nights anyway.
I would like this phone to act as a bit of an ambassador for the platform as I'm not sure when it's going to be launched in this country.
Oh, and no, I will be moving to the States in a year but hopefully purchase the device before the end of the month.
S-AMOLED or not the battery will last a little bit longer than HD7's one. Although reading through Microsoft forums I saw that there is not much of a difference between the batteries, Samsung might win in standby mode or using the phone only as a phone.
About the cards, it seems Microsoft is on this one and recommends we wait for the "official seal of approval cards" from them for the best performance. When those will be available , there is no word yet , in my opinion somewhere in Q2 if you ask me but that's just a wild guess.
A small reminder is that the Samsung has slightly less RAM (512 vs HD7's 576) but I am sure it's not a deal breaker anyway ..

Does anyone have any experience on how much bigger the 4.3" screen is than the 4" screen? From the pictures it looks to be quite a bit smaller.

Also, since the phones are so similarly spec'd with the main difference being the screen, you should focus (pun!) more of you decision on which carrier is better.
For example, where are you moving to in the US? ATT has a stronger signal in the northeast but tmobile is much better in the south and west coast. The 3g speeds also vary depending on your location and if you use a lot of mobile data, expect to pay more for ATT since they no longer offer unlimited data plans.
Overall, you can expect to pay about 10 dollars less for the same plan on Tmobile vs ATT.
But like I said, service and reception should be your ultimate deciding factor since both phones are almost identical and priced the same.

One thing that I must say about the Samsung Focus that most people leave out of their reviews is that the back of the phone scratches very easily. Compare it to the iphone chrome rim and you get what I mean. It's been a week since my friend bought his focus and the back has already shown some wear and tear and he pretty much babys his phone. So if you do plan on getting the focus make sure you get a case or whatever.
Also, if you are looking for an "ambassador" device, always go with htc since developers on xda focus more of their time developing on htc devices. I mean the HTC XDA II was the reason why this forum was created!
About prices: everything unlimited- Text, Minutes, & Data.
On T Mobile you ll be paying between $80-$90 a month. But 3g is spotty and indoor 3g sucks with T mobile and I live in south florida. Every time I call to complaint they say their working on it, and thats been for three years now.
On AT&T you will be paying between $135-$145 a month for same service.
only difference is At&T has 3G coverage in way more areas than T mobile.
and they dont have the indoor problem with their 3G.
I have till Monday to return my HD7 and Im still debating on what to do cause Im off contract already. I love the phone but what I like most is the OS, Microsoft has done a beautiful job. Still needs a little touch here and there but awesome start I think. I would love to get the samsung focus phone from AT&T but as you see the prices are way more, I guess thats the price you gotta pay for better service. and Verizon is just as expensive. Sprint is the cheapest but the W7 phone they are coming out with is to small for my taste.

It seems that for cards right now, the ones to get are sandisk class2, those are the ones that people have gotten to work in the hd7s and the ones that are now coming out microsoft certified.

Definitely want to keep the carriers in mind. At&t will get you signal just about anywhere, but doesn't have the best 3g/4g network so your data may suffer.
Tmobile isn't as widespread as the others, but if you live in a city chances are you are good. I live in San Antonio and always have reception (hspa+)

Hmm.. It definitely seems like I'll be going with T-Mobile then as AT&T sound too be just a little too expensive.

Also interesting to hear about the Focus scratching, I imagine they used too thin a plastic to make it terribly durable.
Since I'll be stuck in South Africa for another year, the carrier isn't too much of an issue for me right now and I will only be able to fully determine which is best once I've tried them out in the places I'll be.
The HD7 always stuck out as me as the phone to get and I think as I look at it, it's turning out to be the better choice.

Regarding your concern about waiting another year for updated specs, you will feel the exact same way next year when your buying your newer phone. Think about it in the perspective of an iPhone user...they know for a fact that a new upgraded iphone is coming out in a year but nonetheless theres no talk about waiting another year to see what might be released whether its dual core or 10mp cameras.
The truth of the matter is technology will always be doubling in specs at an exponential rate so theres not point in waiting for a year cuz of course there will be better phones and hardware.
Ever since I bought my first G1, I always upgrade my phone in a year or sometimes less either due to better hardware released or just because I get bored easily. And after I buy the newer phone, I just sell my old one. At most i'll be spending about 100-150 to "upgrade."
For example. I sold my iphone 3gs on craigslist for 350 this summer and bought an iPhone 4 for 450 which was a pretty good deal. I then sold my iphone 4 for 500 and bought an hd2 for 250. And then I recently switched to the hd7 buying it for 450 with no contract.
So don't worry about holding off on buying a phone. They seem to improve at a faster rate than computers/tvs so its really not worth keeping around older hardware that grows more obsolete day by day.

HD 7 for sure. The differences in AMOLED or whatever is not enough to make up for the sheer 4.3 inch size on the HD7. I loved it on my HD2 and told myself I would never go back to anything smaller. And I meant it. The HD7 is hands above as far as stylish looks and the "WOW" factor when you or someone else picks it up. Bottom line is, better looking phone with about the same performance across the board due to the OS just being that much more efficient.

Last generation Android (Moto Droid, Nexus One, Desire) and iOS phones are usually in great demand since most people won't pay $500+ premium prices for the top of the line phones.
The majority of XDA community make up the small percentage of hardcore phone users that are willing to shell out however much for the newest spankn phones.
For your situation, as long as WP7 doenst end up flopping like the Palm webOS, you can expect the resell value of the HD7 to be pretty good in a year.

First off, I guess its obvious a lot of the users who browse this board would recommend the X1. My hope is that I can get some honest opinions on whether or not you guys would still invest in a X1 if you didn't have it currently.
I'm in Canada and I'm looking for a phone from my local retailer (in this case Rogers). Since I'm not just buying any unlocked phone, I don't have that many options. Its the X1, HTC Diamond of iPhone. iPhone's functions are great but I just dislike the look very much. The X1 is looking good in both appearance and cost for me.
I'm also a bit intimidated about all the customization for the X1. It's great that there are so many options but I don't know where to start. If someone can point me off in the right direction (in terms of what to install, what are must have ROMs / apps) that would be great. Especially all this WM6.1/6.5/6.5.1 I hear buzzing around.
Any help would be great appreciated.
the x1 is cool and all but its 1 year old now. You can find better phones out there. Are you interested in the updated x2? its the same just bigger screen and an accelerometer. Are you going to be at&t only? If not you should check out the Droid phone for verizon
if you can get it really cheap then go for it or get the tp2 for the bigger screen. both are pretty much one year old tech but will hold their own with the new current phones being offered.
I'm from the igloos up North so the Canadian providers are mainly Rogers and Telus and I'm with Rogers.
Seems to me that we usually get the shortest end of the stick; by the time I can pick a phone up from my local store it seems to be outdated and at the moment it seems to be my only choice. This is my first smart phone so I'm finally getting some data and I don't want to spend a whole lot.
Regardless, the X2 does look pretty awesome and I'm definitely interested. However, I don't know when or if Rogers will offer it. Is there any conformation on information like so? I think the X2 was released in Europe a few weeks ago if my research proves correct.

I love my X1, but it has old software by default. If you are into ROM flashing that isn't a problem, but if you aren't, you'll likely be happier with a Touch Pro 2.
How much are they selling it for? If it is at the same price of the iPhone 3GS, then get the iPhone, sell it as new on ebay and have enough money to buy 2 X1s.
before You'll get one read sticky about cracking. this device have a serious issue with plastic elements of housing cracking and chipping without any real reason. don't let any fool convince You, that it's a problem of only some units. most units are/will be affected. x2 however might be better, as it was built by foxconn, rather than htc.
if you can get new one less than 300$ then go for it
hi im new to all smartphones in general (live in poland and we have third world providers here )
got dilema since my contract is soon to be expired and got proposals for cheap but long contract extension (kinda normal here) phones.
Ill write what i can get :
-omnia
-xperia x1
-htc touch dual
-htc magic
-htc diamond
here is my dilema - x1 or magic
x1 comes with 4 gig sd (magic with nothing)
x1 is kinda older but when i look at hardware of lets say x2 its almost identical hence i hope for updates for x1
for magic speaks android (but new droid phones will have 1gig procesors wich worries me about its updates)
please speak from expirience.
Ill not use internet heavely (costs in orange network are radiculous) more like for IM's besides i can download apps via pc - ill be into flashing roms and stuff since i love to customize my phones.
so please be honest and no i cant afford any other phone since it would mean around 500$ and im poor bastard

If those are your options the xperia is by far the best! Okay the Omnia might not be a bad option, but I wouldn't consider the rest as in the same category.
EDIT: Magic would actually be a better choice in my opinion than Omnia, but I am still more favorable to WinMo... For now. If you don't have an affinity to Windows Mobile then the Magic might be a good choice. I prefer X1 for high res screen too. Makes for awesome Web browsing.
based on the choices you have, the x1 seems to be the better option. The new roms here make the x1 a much much better phone than out of the box so dont worry about it's initial performance once you get it. I mean after flashing a good rom, it's like having a new fone again...
Also, the x1 seems to be the only one with the keyboard amongst your other choices and for me that's a huge advantage!! I guess i'm just not made for full touch screen usage, i make too many errors typing...the next advantage would be the wvga resolution, awesome for watching movies (of course those formatted for wvga, there's a tool here to format)...
I just got my X1 last week, unlocked for $300 AUD, and after flashing a few roms its easy to find a happy place. I think its a pretty sweet device, and it can still fight it out with the newer phones.
Of the rest I've had a go at the Omnia, magic and also a touch HD, although the touch HD is pretty much the same except with no keyboard etc. I don't really like the Omnia's screen, so I would go for the Magic, the cloud concept seems pretty appealing, and its pretty slick.

Do i NEED to unlock x1 to be able to flash it etc?
Coz im long time orange user and dont plant to change it any time soon so its not nessesary for me.
as for android it has an app that blocks gprs and stuff is there simmilar thing for x1?
as for all these choices i only considered magic (for android) and experia for overall keyboard and screen that makes me horny also the camera soft on SE is allways better.
Tbh its like rollercoaster lol 1 day i want x1 more next day want magic lol

No you don't need to unlock it from a network to flash it, as far as I know.
I actually think, IMO, Magic has the better still camera, but I've never tried them both in same conditions. Video on X1 is much better though, even more so if you get a X1i. Also camera without a dedicated button (the Magic is missing one) can be a bit irritating.
As for apps, I think you can be covered for anything.
X1 is getting old, so 3 years might be a stretch, how much would you pay for the phone through a plan? Might be better to just buy it outright?
Also, X1 has the 3.5mm jack, and the usb port is in much better position for typing. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the Magic has a non-mini-b port, and I have loads of those laying around, so more convenient

FYI, the Sony XPeria X1 is only $99 from Rogers on a 3 year term. This is a fantastic price, since it was $299 on a 3 year term last week. I'm thinking of getting the X1 now, especially since I've heard that the Motorola Droid won't be coming to Rogers.

The X1 is a much higher end looking device, and will at least look good for quite a long time . The Magic on the other hand already looks old. OS wise, Android is ahead of MS in terms of GUI.
With all that being said, if you have a lot of time on your hands to tinke you'll like the X1, it is like a mini computer. The magic imo has less upgrade-ability due to its low ROM size. Eitherway, you'll likely be happy as this is your first smartphone and you have nothing to compare it too.
Lots of good info in this thread. I've almost exclusively used Symbian/S60/UIQ up until this point and have been thinking of getting a nice and relatively cheap WinMo device to get me up to speed in the WinMo world and help me tide over until the X10 hits the scene in 2 months.
There are a couple of <6 month old X1s available around where I live for a shade over US$200. Do you think that's the correct price to pay? Frankly, I'm surprised at the amount of depreciation over the past 12 months. Other phones that used to cost about $800 (TouchHD etc) have held on to their value while the X1's has just plummeted.
Anyways, the X1s that I played with were in pristine condition but I'm concerned about the cracks problem. What do you reckon would be a good approximation for a baseline production date from where the cracks problem was resolved? I tried searching through the sticky thread on the problem but couldn't really find anything specific since most people haven't posted the production dates of their X1s.
Just to tell you, the X10 is an android phone
I'd forget the X1... sure you might get an 09 batch with no case cracking issues but another common problem is that the keyboard gets sticky and soon your space bar becomes very unresponsive.
Better of getting a full touch screen phone.
X1 for me was one big bad purchase and yes I do flash the latest ROMS.
I bought mine on May last year, and boy was it a mistake. I can't believe I bought ANOTHER Windows Mobile phone, while it is a dying OS...
Too bad I didn't wait for the HTC Desire...
So yeah, Microsoft screwed me with their crappy OS.

yup, i regret it. BUT I can't cry over spilled milk. i make the best of what i have and with enough tweaking and playing around with it, even a Topaz can be...half decent. my ONLY complaint? it's slightly slow. faster than stock roms...but slow in comparison to the nexus one or the desire. oh well, ill enjoy it for another year maybe and then try and get an Android device (Droid 3 then?)

Sometimes I regret getting the TD2 especially when entering Text Messages which is unbareable slow and the occassional unresponses to Powering-on.
BTW sent an e-mail last week to HTC about said problems and they came back with "Try a hard reset" - Not at all impressed by HTC.

do not want to be involved into an endless discussion but I could not help myself not to reply with my thoughts: why is willing anybody to throu on a forum ideas like a dying OS and comparing 2 completely different devices? if you look ofr a shoulder to cry, go out and play with the friends! if you look for some oppinions do not by the judge! to not throuw sentances in vain!
by the moment you plan to change your device the "desire" will be a brik, so your choice made one year ago can prove to be perfect!
for not being misunderstood, I am not in favor or against topaz but this thrad is not bringing anything good to the forum, but only in time, make the search or other maintenance of the forum working slow. posts as love my device also do not help! maybe a betetr idea, si to open a new thread named: why will you choose topaz and why not, and there place pertinent reasons for complaints!
personally, I will never buy a device significantly bigger than topaz! I had diamnond 1 and now, because of useless hardware buttons on that model and because of bigger resolution and available memory I moved to topaz (pure). I will always prefer the dying OS as you named instead of banging my had on the wall finding a reliable navi for Android (of course, depend on the date of posing and the maps you need). the rest, like slow response, I can live with it! I mostly use the device for remote desktop and few calls and messaging. browsing for market information or just info is aslo a must and working pretty well!

I only regret not buying the touch pro2, and besides the lack of keyboard, I'm pretty happy with it.
No regrets here. It will hold me over for some time until the next "latest and greatest" device is released. It does everything I need it to do.
Granted, if I was stuck on the stock ROM, I probbaly would be sorely disappointed.
I really like the device. It's sad, that Microsoft doesn't fill up the marketplace. They seem to wait for their 7. My girlfriend just bought a Desire and I think I will stay with HTC but change to Android. She already has a lot of apps I miss on my phone.
I will use the diamond another 12 month from now, so Microsoft has a chance to convince me of Windows Phone 7. Else Android is my alternative.
at firts i regreted i had bought a TD2 not waited 3months and bought a HD2, but then i just didn't care.
now i regret i bought 2x4gb microSD cards 1 for my htc 1 for my (nokia)n81, because now i fixed audio problems and i hate carrying 2 phones around all the time(1 for music,1 for gps and web surfing and a few cool apps).
so i'm guesing tomorrow i'll regret i tried to make a sorta RC/3.5mm connector out of my htc headset
the lousy build is definitely a neg point for me
i have sweaty palms and the paintwork is all ruined
still prefer the old original diamond

wm platform is really slow though; getting online etc...
got a iphone for web surfing and email purposes instead
the only reason i'm retaining a wmm phone is for the intelligent call function(that is extremely important due to work and call volume) not available on other mobile platforms; correct me if i'm wrong...
I got an HTC Pure as a "complimentary" upgrade from AT&T, after my Incite got bit by the Netfront "trialware" fiasco. I am quite pleased with the Pure. It's screen is fantastic. I had to laugh when my buddy handed my phone to his wife to play with and then said, "she had a bad experience with her first touch screen phone. It had one of 'those' resistive screens." I think the only thing I don't like is the lack of a standard (3.5) headphone jack. It's also hard because a lot of new software is being targeted for the HD2 with it's faster processor. The larger screen would also be nice, but it's not any better resolution, and it would be (slightly) less pocketable. So, all in all I'm pleased with my device, and am very leary of WM7.
I like my PURE, and (fingers crossed) have not had to Hard Reset since I got it. WimMo6.5 has been stable, device has been basically flawless. I replaced two Tilts with this device. I am back on "shipped" ROM, just work around bloatware and load everything on my microSD card. I was concerned about not having the slideout key board, but am doing just fine without it.
I dont like lack of 3,5mm jack, flash, poooooor battery life, sluggish operation, WinMo abnormalities, direct sunlight readability... (nice form factor, resolution, gps performance, good camera...but in my case barely usable device)
Regarding move to E52/E72
Of course you regret it. In a year the technoligy is better and the new devices are better to. But for me it was the best device on that moment.
Overhere in Holland you just don't buy a phone. You sign a contract for a year or two and usually you'll get the phone for free. Now these day you have to pay up to €100 cause the devices are getting more expensive like a iPhone.
So waiting is not a option or you will lose your phone number. Or worse you forget to stop your contract in time, the phone company will extend your contract for another year or two.

Good service from HTC, they respond in your own language and really trying to help you. Just say you've done a couple of hard resets, they will sort it out for you. They've also kicked Vodafone Holland for me so that I can update my weather at location again.

XDA-forum that brings me a lot of new futures. Just think about S2U2, CHT, TD2 tools. And I'm not even talking about flashing to costum ROM's

My usb cable is crap, I can see the wires sticking out after 6 months of usage.
I hate my TD2 soooo much... Bought it on a 24 month contract in June last year, and within a month I was sick of the slowness and the plasticky design.
A few months later the camera stopped working completely and so HTC had to replace pretty much everything (as stated on the slip they provided).
Since then the digitizer has cracked on numerous occasions, with just a few minor impacts. I have been forced to buy and fit my own replacements since I have a good year left with this phone!
So, yes, I regret buying this handset more than any other I have ever owned.
As for Windows Mobile... What a crock of ****. A bare and dysfunctional 'app store', a slow and awkward interface and even with Sense over the top it still feels horrible.
I like HTC as a company, but the fact that within a few months they have discontinued and forgotten about your handset is not nice. If we could have got Android fully working on the TD2 it might have been bareable!
There is literally nothing about my TD2 which I like (battery life and soft keyboard are also rubbish); the initial selling points for me (design, screen, processor) have all been massively superceded.
Some of you may disagree with the points I've made, but the original post was asking for opinions and so these are mine!
I can use just about any ol' device for a phone. What I like about the Pure (and the two other WM devices I've owned) is that it's become a hobby of sorts. I like to flash it and rearrange it and play with different apps. At least until the recent court ruling that makes unlocking legal, I've always felt sorry for the poor folks who use an iPhone (my wife and daughter included) because they're just no fun. I feel like a slave to Steve Jobs when I pick one up. They're just so rigid and unlovable.
Oh, one thing I particularly like about WM is the ability to tether. I wouldn't own a phone that couldn't do that.
My Opinion
Imho, I think the topaz/pure was a great purchase for me. I ran out the day AT&T had them and got one because I was somewhat fed up with the tediousness of my raphael/fuze. Apart from a few minor issues, I think it's a great device... the 5 megapixel camera can be a halfways decent substitute to my normal cybershot when it has to, and the screen is indeed large and bright. The unfortunate part about it is that for the most part, you can't use it for serious video playing without downconverting almost anything you put on there. But that's what everyone's got their ipods for, right? XDXD
I don't regret getting it, and I am still satisfied with it, but if I was stuck with stock ROM, and did not re customize it from time to time, I am pretty sure that I would regret. It is wonderful phone and in my opinion the still best looking. That said I am switching soon to Desire.
I went thru a lot of HTC devices over the years and I did not regret a singly buy!
Of course after 1/2 year there are newer better faster devices out, but I was never disappointed by any HTC device I bought.
The only device I regret to buy was an Acer Dual Sim device that was cranky, slow, and did not work in Japan.
I dont regret getting any phone due to the research and testing before I buy them. One thing I can say is txting on resistive screens is painfull at best with my sausage fingers! saying that I had issues with my Hero aswell! the only one i didnt mind typing txt on was the iPhone!!

That said, I love the Nexus, I bought it because of it's top-of the line technology. I don't want a Droid 2 it's too thick. The Droid X is too big, plus it's been out since July. Which means that a new one will be out sooner or later. Too bad the N2 is t-mo and maybe at&t, but I really don't want to lock-in to at&t for another 2 years.
Anybody else in this boat? What are you planning on doing? I'm hoping that the next generation android phones come out soon, face cameras and all. Anybody got any good rumors about new "super-phones"?
Nexus One is a beautiful product... I would like to wait for Nexus Two if there is any~ I got my Nexus One on 2nd March.

I agree it is beautiful. I noticed you're in Australia, for which I'm very jealous. However, I'm not sure what the Australian Android scene is like down there, but it's changing daily here in the US.
Check out the battery cal thread. We just got the battery changes into pershoot's kernel this week. So now you can pull all your battery values from the battery EEPROM chip, and tweak them. We are experimenting with squeezing out more capacity now that we can change voltage, current, etc. Check the battery thread for more info
nothing for awhile, i just upgraded from my G1 to a N1 3 weeks ago and i don't honestly see anything hardware wise ground breaking happening that will make me want to get a new phone anytime soon.
a buddy of mine has the droid X, nice phone but man that screen looks like crap compared to the AMOLED screen the viewing angles not that it matters is very bad on them as well.
I think when they come up with a newer battery tech or phones that can have 2x+ the battery life and still be just as good as an N1 i would consider it but it's not going to happen for at least a year if not longer. in the mean time i don't have problems with battery life on average days and when i know i will be away from home/work for awhile i have a spare charged battery to make sure it stays alive

As soon as something that has a high quality build with a good camera equipped, I will jump ship. As of right now, I don't think that any Android phone has a good camera (in my opinion). I think we definitely live in an age where cellphone cameras can replace digital cameras but, unfortunately, there is no Android phone that has impressed me yet in the imaging department.
I agree. My wife wife has an iPhone 3G and I can brag all day about mu N1 being better. But when it gets to the camera, her phone is much better. Android phones have a long way ti catch up.

Nexus One has a decent camera, but the video recording quality is atrocious, ie. typical HTC video camera quality. Even the Sony X10 Mini Pro takes better videos (constant 30fps indoors). That's probably the only big knock against my Nexus One.
N1 stays
With currently available options I am unable to justify a switch from N1.
Thats unless someone releases an unlocked phone with a 1.5 dual core processor and 1G RAM with sustainable battery backup.
I'll wait for the next batch of new Android devices from the manufacturers once the WP7(which looks good) dust settles down.

Here are the features I would really like to have on such a device (in no particular order):
More internal storage. WTF were Google and HTC thinking putting only 512MB in the Nexus One?! With app sizes growing like crazy (e.g. Adobe Flash/Air or any 3D game) you hit the limit at 50-60 apps. Froyo improves things a little, but you're only postponing the inevitable "Device memory low" message. 8GB should be the minimum in today's handsets, preferably closer to 16-32GB.
Hardware keyboard. I'm getting used to Swype, but nothing beats the keyboard. Either slide or candy bar (Droid Pro) form factors will do.
True multi-touch screen. N1's screen is using old technology that registers only 2 points, and not very well at that. Just try crossing the axis while pinch-zooming to see what I mean.
Front-facing camera. I know it's a gimmick, but there are some pretty cool apps in the works that take advantage of it.
Better main camera. I'm not talking "moar megapiksels", I mean higher quality optics.
Larger and better screen. N1's 3.7 inches is a good enough size for a mobile device, but only just. I'd really prefer my next handset to have at least a 4.3" screen. Also, assuming Samsung stops hogging their Super AMOLEDs, I'd love to have that because of its supposed battery savings.
Larger battery. At some point we need to realize that with our changing usage habits, those 1500 mAh batteries just don't last for one day. Faster processors, GPU accelerated OS, bigger screens, and overall increased usage all take a toll. It's not your grandfather's Blackberry that sits in his pocket all day. 2400 mAh should be the standard nowadays, even if it makes the phone a millimeter thicker than the iPhone.
Better GPU. Sorry to say, but N1's Adreno 200 is a piece of crap. Forget Galaxy S, it can't even compare to the original Droid's PowerVR chip! I don't play many 3D intensive games on my Nexus One, but the ones I do are barely able to run. Gimme a Tegra2 or ARM's new Mali processor, and we're talkin'
More efficient CPU. It doesn't even need to be faster than 1GHz. As the G2 proved, clock speeds don't mean anything. Multi-core, better architecture, etc. should all be coming very soon to Android manufacturers.
HDMI-out port. Not all of my TVs at home are networkable, so having a video tank is very desirable to me.
CDMA and GSM (both T-Mobile ant AT&T 3G frequencies) radios. SIM lock is not the only thing restricting me from switching between carriers. I'm willing to pay extra to be free from any one particular network. Of course LTE, WiMAX and other future technologies will make this point moot. For the foreseeable future though, just CDMA and GSM radios will do.
Now I realize that with all these features comes a hefty price tag, but I'm willing to pay it. I don't want a carrier subsidy, I just want a kick-ass handset that will do what I want it to do.

a dual-core 1GHz+ processor
at least 1 GB of on-board storage
sdcard slot
I don't think that is too much to ask, is it? So far, From what I see out there, I'm sticking with my N1. If the HTC DesireHD2/Pyramid actually exists and has a dual-core processor, I'll likely jump to that IFF we can get S-OFF.

to answer this thread, i've been in upgrade hell, i simply cant figure out what i would want to replace my nexus one with. nothing out there seems to be "better" than the nexus one for me. is it too hard to get a nice solid aluminum 3.7-4 inch phone with notification light and build quality? the desire s is the highest on my list right now, but that stupid side-charge port turns me off. and no notification light. couldnt they just make the charge port on the bottom like normal?

S-OFF stands for Security Off. Without getting technical, think of is as an unlocked bootloader.
I'll go for the HTC Pyramid if it shows up unlocked & 4G for tmob usa. Keeping my great N1 till then...

for me it has to be htc iv experimented and the dev support is with htc it will be a sense phone i cant stand stock
I am going to keep my N1 until the LG Optimus G2x or HTC Pyramid come out on Tmo, but I will wait to see if the Cyanogen team support them. I am not willing to get a phone without CM, or not being able to use custom Roms.

Well right now my Samsung Captivate is my phone. I hate it to death. I find Android way too buggy. I don't like Apples hardware (small screen, so boxy) and the iOS looks too busy to me. Blackberry doesn't have enough apps and Palm (I'm sorry, HP), well, lets just leave them out of this.
So that leaves Windows Phone. I've been researching it for awhile, and being a graphic designer, I really love how the os looks and how it functions. I am on AT&T, and have heard good things about the HD7. The HD7S for AT&T brings the better screen, and I've also heard the camera is improved (although still 5MP.)
However....I've heard lots of horror stories about battery life. I'm not sure if NoDo improved it at all, that would also be nice to find out. Googling it has been inconclusive. The HD7S comes with the same 1230mAh battery, so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience specially with the HD7 and this (or a similar) 1700mAh battery? Any help, thoughts, comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
edit: Apparently since I'm new I can't post links. But anyways, just type in "1700mah battery hd7" on ebay, and it should come up, from Great Britain.
My suggestion would be to purchase it, and test it for a days against the original, and then post your results back here.
Although it will fit without the need for a back cover, I highly doubt it has a charge life of 1700mAh! But im willing to be proved wrong if you want to buy and test for the community...
He doesn't own the phone yet though he says he's thinking of getting it. Adam you're right to be a bit concerned about the 1230 battery. If you use the phone heavily it will struggle to last the day. But if you check Amazon the reviews day the 1500 batteries are in fact worse coz they're not as good quality as OEM HTC. I'd recommend yo leave the hd7 and look at the Samsung omnia 7 I wish id done this

Hmm. That phone does look great. And for an unlocked price it's quite affordable. I also like that it has a super AMOLED screen. That's what my captivate has, and it's the best screen I've ever seen on a mobile device (besides the iPhone 4.) The blacks just blend into the bezel, the colors are vibrant, and the viewing angles are fantastic. Will this phone fully work with AT&T 3G? (7.2MBP). If it does, I think it just replaced the HD7 for Windows Phone candidate.
Also, I'm not going to lie, I'm slightly starting to have second thoughts. Although I love everything about the Windows Phone OS, I'm still slightly worried about the extreme lack of apps on the marketplace. What do you guys think? Are there apps for most things, or do you feel like theres a lot missing still? And is there any indication as to a developer pick-up on for Windows Phone?

Completely understand that. When I got my HD7 I was amazed by the OS, and the UI, but after a couple of months it does wear off and then you care more about the apps which are lacking. Some blow the iPhone/Android versions away like IMDB and Facebook. But then there's no Amazon app in the UK yet and the eBay app is a bit iffy. Games are another problem, there's the odd good indie gaming coming through like NinjaBoy and Mars Runner, but not many others. Rest of the games are Microsoft's xbox-branded titles but they are usually very overpriced.
The reason I'd recommend the Samsung is the great screen like you say, and the touch screen will hopefully be better than the HD7 which isn't perfect.

The HD7S doesnt have a SAMOLED screen... it just has a superlcd screen... lot different.

Well, I was playing with the HD7 today in the Microsoft Store, and I do really like the phone. Plus when I just read an article by Computer World saying:

Also, apparently the Omnia 7 is the Samsung Focus in the US, and the Focus looks butt ugly in my opinion, so I'm gonna stick with the HD7S I think. I could import it from the UK, but then it would be more expensive since it wouldn't be on contract.

I'm pretty sure the cases are different and the Omnia feels a lot more expensive to hold in the hand, if that helps at all.
I'm annoyed with my HD7 as I'm considering selling it, but the sharp edge at the bottom has some chips in it even though I've looked after it. That's gonna affect trade in value and it's only a few months old. Think it will always happen due to the design of the phone.

Look at a picture of the HD7 and you'll see the top and bottom have grills surrounded by a sharp edge of metal. This is painted, so it chips easily - well it does on my phone anyway.
Knowing this I wish I'd put my phone in a case but my iPhone wasn't in a case and held up much better.
I do not believe that the Omnia 7 will work in the US at all. I may be wrong on this but I know that it will not work here in Canada at all.
The Hardware, etc of the Samsung Focus is indeed the same as the Omnia 7 and the one plus about the Focus is that it has an external sd card slot to expand memory where the Omnia 7 does not however... I agree... The Focus is one UGLY phone!!!
I have an HD7 with regular screen and yes... After having my Galaxy S and my Nexus S with SAMOLED screens, you can definitely tell the difference in color, brightness, etc but it is really NOT all that BAD so at this time I would recommend the HD7S with the S-LCD screen from ATT and I think you will be happy.
PS... Buy me one with the S-LCD screen and ship it to me here in Canada... LOL!!!

Haha yea, that's the plan. (Not shipping it to Canada though ) It comes out June 5, but I'm gonna wait until June 6 to buy it since Apple is having their conference, and I want to see what the the new iPhone will have to offer.
So I'm finally getting around to moving on. As much as I love my Nexus One, I'm in need of a new phone and with the deals coming up I don't know what to get. Being a "even more plus customer" (or whatever they call it now) I don't get those nice phone discounts so everything is relatively expensive. I have to buy it at full price
Today I saw the Galaxy Nexus was on sale for $400 which is really tempting. I know how great a phone it is, but its a little on the big side for me (ha). Then I saw Tmo's $100 trade in value and thought about using that to get a One S for $500.
The things that keep me away from the One S are that there is no removable battery, the possibility of bugs on the first release, and a locked boot loader. But it's such a beautiful device with an amazing camera that it's hard to resist. Money isn't really a big deal, but its a factor I'm considering. I could do a bit more with that $100.
Anyone else that has moved on, what made you switch?
Any recommendations about which phone to get or input in general would be great!

did you handle the dummy or do you have a working one where you are. the dummy was alot longer than wide. kinda like the n1 but an inch longer, or so it looked and felt. i didn't like it.
why not wait a couple weeks and see about the ssg3

I used a dummy, I liked how it felt, but you brought up a good point. I should probably try the real thing.
I was considering the S3 but I'm concerned it's gonna take longer than I'd like to get to the U.S. and be too expensive. The deals to me were the reason I wanted to buy a new phone. Are you considering the S3?
I just came from a nexus one and went with the gnex. I absolutely love it. Removable battery and it being a nexus are the winning factors to me. Being a nexus and able to type 6 or so lines of text to flash the stock image and root with files straight from google are big factors for me. The phone is smooth as hell. The other ones will be tainted with sense and Samsung garbage.it is quite wide but I'm getting used to it quickly, after two days I can just about use the phone fully with one hand.
i am looking at the ssg3 or galaxy note, but fed up with tmo slow speeds in my area, Dayton Oh, and still stuck on a 2 year contract. I get .5 to 2mb most of the time. My wishes are dl speed at +5mb minimum, good signal strength at my house and work, 4.5 inch screen or bigger. I will root for apps and nandroid but may not continue flashing as these new phones have it all now--for me at least--
I posted on another thread getting 10-13mb dl with gnex on verizon at store, i know in two years most carriers will be lte capable, so the speeds are coming
yeah, i noticed a little bit of a service bump with the hspda+ on att in some spots in my area getting about 6mb down 2mb up where it used to be 3mb max on the n1. im perfectly fine with that amount of bandwidth, i dont need my phone to have the same service level of throughput as my home internet and chew through my battery. i wish the carriers could improve on the response time / ping now, who cares about bandwidth, its all marketing hype. give me a 22ms ping with 3mb down, not 300ms ping with 15mb...
those speeds would be acceptable to me for now, as in two more years we may see perfection on smartphones for most of us. as i have time maybe someone in the dayton area will get the unlocked version and post tmobile speeds here--

If you're one of those who flash Sense/MIUI on your N1 for functionality, and prefer it over plain Android - get One S.
There was already such a thread that I participated in, you can find my opinion there. Personally I can't stand plain Android for the reasons I laid out many times, and dislike ICS design.

Yeah, I found your thread. You bring up a good point about the development, but I feel either way I'll be okay. I do like my stock ICS, but I'm curious to see how the new sense is, maybe give it a chance. Although, I saw a development of Sense, Blur, and Touchwiz ports over in the Galaxy Nexus form. Made me think twice...
I tried to go to the t-mobile store and use a One S today, but they were closed by the time I got there D: Hopefully I'll be able to get my hands on one soon.
One S is better then GNex in most ways but development. Built quality is amazing, screen is very nice, camera and camera app are also super. but right now you just cant do much with the phone besides running Sense....there are no 100% functioning ROMs or any mods YET.
I say screen quality is better on One S in terms of colors, but Gnex is very sharp and resolution is 720p
I have One S and thinking about trading for Gnex because I just hate sitting on stock ROM and waiting....but I am not 100% sure yet
The is just one flaw in One S design, the cool notification light is very cool, but its not visible from the sides.

Just handed back the OneS. Until there's some decent Roms, the existing Sense stuff is very annoying. The camera on it is VERY impressive, build quality great too. Screen, same brightness as Nexus One (ie, very clear), but not /that/ bump up in rez. When there's some decent roms for it, I'd jump in and enjoy it, but for now, there's a lot that'll annoy you.
