We can't all be perfect

70 $ for just a charging dock..you must be kidding.
i don't need dhmi out or syncing in my bedroom

I tend to agree that Dell's dock price is a little nuts, or at least the solution is a little overboard if all you want to do is charge the phone on a nightstand in a way where you can see the screen.
I'll post more details on what I am doing with this later, but this thread seemed like a nice thread to at least post a pic of my contraption, especially considering there's already a token reference to an Apple product.
I had an iPad dock lying around the house that I have NEVER used because my iPad is always in a case. Before anyone makes any Apple jokes, I'm an Android guy through and through now, but the iPad was a gift, and it actually does do a nice job for light internet browsing. Great for the commode, LOL.
Anyway, I had some fun last night with the iPad dock, a dremel, some JB weld, a can of spray paint and, of course, a Streak USB cable. It's pretty rough. The connector moved a little on me before it dried all the way, but it still works perfectly, and the phone isn't crooked as a result. I could make it much cleaner looking on a second try, but whatever, it does the job.
More on how I made it an automated night time solution later, but here are a couple of pics:

Dodgy Bros inc on this one.
I wont have any sympathy when it shorts out & bursts into flames

How dare you call my precision-engineered work of art "dodgy"!
LOL. It's all good. Cost me no money, and evening of messing around, and one more reason for the wife not to understand me.
HA HA!

Looks nice Spleisher glad you could accomplish it, love those home projects.
To the Original poster, I really like the motorola looking dock aesthetically even more than the Dell dock, doubt they'd make one that sexy but I hope to get the dell branded dock for the holidays.

There's some portable radio / internet radio thingy on sale in the U.S. that also uses a pdmi connector (and has a dock) I can't remember the name of it though.

Spleisher - I love it. Great work!!!

Thanks. It was fun. I could make it much more clean if I had it to do over again, but it works perfectly, so it's cool. The best part about it is the tasker profile for automatically turning it into a clock at night.
Anyway, one more reason for my wife to think I am a nut

Hi was wondering if anyone has tried using a galaxy tab dock, as a charging station as it has a pdmi connection ?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

soz i may be wrong but i looked at the samsung leed in tesco and it is different

The Galaxy Tab lead should work, I have read in several places that the streak's connector is a standard pdmi as is the tab's

You're not wrong, the Galaxy uses another proprietary connector

The question now is which is standard pdmi, Galaxy Tab or Dell Streak or are neither ?

Official Samsung Vehicle Navigation Mount

I have been searching for both a vehicle mount as well as a desktop dock for my Nexus S since I got it in December. While there have been a few 3rd party solutions trickling into existence, it's nice to see some official Samsung love! I can't post links yet, but check it out on their website: samsung.com by searching for ECS-V1A3BEGSTA or BECS-V1A3BEG (both seem to be model numbers). There currently isn't a price and if you add it to your cart it says it's on back order (for $0). But at least we know it's coming! Hope to see an official desk dock soon as well.
Also, interesting, it says it has an integrated charger (which is one thing I really want in a car mount), but I fail to see any evidence of it in the pictures. I'm curious how it works. I would also really like to see an integrated audio output, preferably (if possible) through the same micro USB connection as the charging and then allow for the 3.5mm output to split from the mount. This is what I used to do with my original MT3G and it was great to only have to make one connection to the phone.

Interestingly the back plate of the dock appears to have a cutout for the camera and speaker, but they are in the wrong position (wrong side in each case) given how the phone sits in the dock. I am also curious how they are going to do integrated charging. Perhaps those images aren't a final product shot.

It took Samsung to officially release the Galaxy S docks about 3-4 months after its release in the U.S. So I'm assuming it's going to take just as long for this dock to come out.

Indeed, this would make more sense. I'm unsure how they would have integrated charging unless they somehow had a different back plate for the phone that would allow for conductive charging.
I'll still pick it up for $40 when it's available. It's a lot better than the the "universal" options out there. It is too bad the Nexus S doesn't have the contact/charging pins like the Nexus One did - that was a nice car dock to own (although a bit more pricey).

Nook Color Mounted In Car

So I saw on reddit a nice clean looking install of an Asus tab in a BMW 335i and thought "I'll do the cheaper version all around". I went for the nook color installed in my 325i. Same method, so really the credit belongs to X-ception for his original concept. Nice work buddy.
I took it one step further and this cheap little tablet can be mounted either horizontally OR vertically and still be fine while riding. The downside of this is it most likely wiggles more than the transformer due to how I mounted it to allow either orientation. Also the transformer has some more weight to it.
Right now the audio is only connected via AUX cable, but I will be going the bluetooth route as well once I can manage to save $50 or so. For now it is a fun proof of concept and it can handle whatever kind of driving I've thrown at it. Again minimal wiggling and this is my first test with the nook in the car. For the minimal work required I'm certainly very happy with it.

Could you shrink your images a little? They're kind of massive even at 1680x1050 and I have to scroll 50% of each sideways
Thanks for fixing the images. What are you using to mount the nook?
I wanna see some pictures.
I was thinking about installing a Galaxy Tab in my 525i for a while now.
Nevermind, there are pictures now aha.

Damn you guys are fast. In the time it took to fix the pics I already had 2 complaints about them haha.
You get the mount here: http://www.proclipusa.com/ Just buy the mount NOT the device holder (they don't have one for the nook color).
Then you buy the "pad tab" mounting system here. http://www.thepadtab.com/
The cool part is I now have one extra pad tab mount (comes with 2) so I can mount my nook somewhere else as well like my wall or something. I'm trying to think of something more creative though.
I know you can't tell from the pic, but its a 6 speed standard transmission and the nook being in the car in NO way interferes with my driving or it would have been pulled out immediately.
Very nice install and use of the PadTab. We love this stuff. We saw the other install on this site and are impressed with the creativity here!

Nice work!!
I'm trying to figure out how to position/mount the nook in my Jeep without getting in the way of anything else, and without blocking the windshield. It would also need it to be within easy reach of the driver for those days when I go 4-wheeling solo.
I think it would be very neat to use with off-road trail apps and an external GPS.
Any ideas?
Here's what my cockpit looks like:
Honestly? Give windshield mounting a try. I do it in my Tacoma, and unless i move to look at it, the nook does not block my view at all, nor has it caused legal issues (i know it has been seen by officers). Having it mounted right above the center console makes it really easy to use as well, all by my self.

Maybe Try and mount it to the left of the wheel , other then that i would cover your radio with the exception of the volume since you can use the nook as a music device

Perhaps you can help us all out and run over to every thread where someone has posted a beta, alpha, or nightly and let them know that they have an epic fail for not making sure it was not needing any more development before they posted it.

Nice job man! Love the black carved out Androids!
That's pretty awesome. I'd be too afraid of the heat though. Still great build nonetheless.
Good job on the dock. It's pretty cool...you even got a little notch for the camera on the droid inc.
I wish I was half as creative and handy as you. Very nice job!
That's pretty cool! I actually cruised over here to see if anyone made their own dock recently.
finally
Finally got around to taking a picture of the dock with the phone in it. The display is the "night display" from Gentle Alarm. In the background, you can even see part of the landline and the alarm clock made not necessary by the phone in the dock.
wow over 1600 views
I just looked at this thread and realized over 1,600 people have looked at my dock. Wow. I have been using it for several months as an alarm clock in the dock every night and so far no heat issues. It has been working out very well. After seeing how many people were interested in a dock I think I should have offered to make and sell them. I still could, but I imagine the market for a new dock for this old phone is dwindling.
I would buy one. Red androids please.

Ok, if you want one I can make one. I wouldn't expect to be making very many of these so each one could be customized. That one was made in pine which I stained with a pecan stain. I have since come across some walnut boards. I could make one in walnut which would look much better than pine. If you want some other type of wood I can see about getting some. I used a micro to standard USB cable which allows me to either plug it into the computer or into the standard dinc AC adapter. I can also change the design with more or less androids, your name or some completely different design, even a square or sculpted top rather than a round one.
If something in the neighborhood of 50 bucks is in your price range let me know along with any specifics of the design you want.
And, of course, for everyone elses' enjoyment I can post a picture here when it is done.
How do you have your usb plug secured in there? I've been trying to come up with a design for one of my own since I always use my phone as my alarm clock, but I've not come up with a good way to get the plug to stay in place so that the phone can be plugged in easily.

I placed the phone in the holder then I plugged the usb connector into it through the other hole I had cut for it. Then I put some gorilla glue around the plastic part of the plug being careful to keep it away from the end. Gorilla glue expands and fills the space around the plug. I lightly clamped the phone in place overnight, but a couple hours should be enough, and then when I removed the clamp, the plug is secured in place exactly where it needs to be.
Cool idea, looks great!

How to "Brand" a USB cord?

My company is sponsoring an event in October and I was trying to come up with some low-cost, tech giveaway (all attendees will be getting a branded bag and this would go inside). I know a lot of people forget/loose/break their USB charging cords or could just use an extra one. So I've found some i-cables and micro USB but I'm trying to figure out a way to brand them to make people think of me whenever they use them. Thoughts/Suggestions are appreciated.
I would think the best way would be the stickers that you wrap around the cable and just stick it to itself, like the way they attach safety info or the way current manufactures put their brands on them. You know what I mean? It looks like a flag on it.. I would think that would be the best way. Any other way would seem too small to me. It would also be cheaper than other ways. I would opt for plastic and not just paper.

Or maybe you gen get your name embossed on it.. The flags may get torn but the etching will never go off..
I have gotten these before at several events and they can take a sticker. I am sure their are place that will even do it for you. Retractable USB cords.
On a side note, I use them a lot. They have stickers on them from where I got them. And I haven't looked at the stickers once. Couldn't tell you who gave them to me. LOL
Maybe put some kind of branding on the side that faces upwards on the usb cable? I can't be the only one who always tries to put them in upside down, and people would be sure to read the branding every time they use it.

Also if you managed to track down a "gimmick-y" usb cable for cheap enough to use promotion-ally it's definitely worth a little extra cost.
Maybe one of the extra short ones or one that clicks together as a wristband or something that fits on their keys. A private school I checked out gave out keychain flash drives with their name on it, I never went but I'll never forget where I got it since it's always on my keys.

We decided we will be exchanging the cord for the person's email address and answer to 3-4 questions that will allow us to send them a quote. So, once they have the cord, if they ever look at the name it's an added bonus.

Because we are already paying for the branded bags that every attendee will get, this has to be super low cost. I was able to get 100 micro and 100 i-cords for about $120 from China, maybe some of them will work

It is a retro styled device that turns your phone into a 80's style desk phone. You can either rest your phone in the base part (or dock) and connect it through the supplied 3.5mm jack or you can use the handset piece separate and also plug just that part into the 3.5mm jack.
Here I thought I was bad taking pictures
Guess its cute but how practical is it

It's something I could definitely see using at home. I had the phone in my front pocket and the handset hooked into the jack and was able to use it with no issues. The handset also has its own volume adjustment which is nice. That said, it's probably not for everyone...
It might look a bit strange carrying around the handset piece and using it in public hehe. For a relatively older guy like me (I'm 36), I grew up with these kinds of phones so it definitely appeals to me.
My sister in law just got herself the handset piece (you can buy it separate) and she likes it too.
The base (dock) will accomodate most other phones. But the Note 2 is too wide to fit the opening... so I'm trying to think of ways to either make it fit or some other solution..
Maybe this pic will help clarify...
That's my wife's Galaxy S3 in there..

So I was out shopping with my wife and came across this. Thought it was pretty cool so I decided ti get it. Problem is that the base part won't fit the phone because it's too small. I'm trying to find a way to have it fit but not sure where to begin. .. any ideas? I(t's a Hype retro handset, but also included the base (or dock), which is where the issue is...
I really like the handset part. Just had a 3 hour long conversation with my dad and it was onky toward the end that my ear started to hurt a little lol.

I quick searched ebay but couldn't find the exact device.
The closest one I could find (and really nice imo) is this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Ret...256356?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4abf12bda4
I think it'll work on our phones, my only question is about that port on the back side that looks like a typical phone line port. I'm not sure what is it for, plus I cannot figure out whether the device actually charges the phone too..

I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond. Funny because they don't list it on their website either. The closest thing they have listed is the handset piece itself.. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=40088341&RN=2017&KSKU=203210&
Here's a couple box shots...

There is one 3.5mm female jack on the left side of the device that the handset connects to. The handset can either be connected to that, or you can connect it directly to the phone's 3.5mm jack. If you connect the handset to the device, there is a male 3.5mm jack that is used as a passthrough for the handset to connect to the phone. At the bottom of the device the hole you see is to pass a cord for a wall charger, so no, the device itself won't charge your phone. Hope that clears things up a bit.
