[Q] Soft Root and ROM Manager - Legend Android Development

Hi everyone,
I have a rooted HTC Desire but a friend of mine has a HTC Legend.
As far as I know, rooting this device is quite complicated and need to create a Goldcard. I don't want to impose that to my friend.
So, the only possibility to acquire root privileges is to use a soft root app.
And I wonder if I can install ClockWork ROM Manager and the ClockWork recovery while I'm root. Then I would change the ROM.
Is it possible or is it gonna brick the device ? In other words, is the soft root allows me to change ROM or is it just to obtain root privileges within the installed ROM ?
Thanks for your help

NO QUESTIONS IN DEVELOPMENT
is it so hard to read????

Answer change rom with softroot :No
Answer brick phone trying this :NO , why? cause it basicly wont make any modifications to your phone unless fully rooted.
As to it beeing difficult rooting your friends phone , it is not. Al it takes is some carefull reading and common sence.
There are loooooooooooooooads and i meen looooooooaaaads of howto's here to ease your life.
Good luck.

The problem is not rooting the phone. I know how to do it but rooting the HTC Legend imposes the creation of a goldencard.
This means my friend needs to keep an extra SD card... And he's not "geek" enough for that

When the phone is rooted he doesn't need a goldcard anymore. I simply formated my goldcard after successfully rooting the phone and it works like a charm.

Gr8 !! That's a good news !!!

GUYS! You don't know what are you talking about! Goldcard is ordinary sdcard with some bits changed in boot sector. That's all. It can be used as ordinary sdcard with no problems at all. It can even be formatted or repartitioned (with more than one partition) and stll remains "gold".

Yes...I don't know why your're so "afraid" of it. I was creating a goldcard at the beginning and since then I'm using it as a normal sdcard (I didn't buy another one yet). You don't need to be a geek for that. Help your friend by creating his goldcard, than let that card in the device forever...

Root with KillingInTheNameOf ; goldcard on phone

Hi ! I'm an embedded Linux dev, but I'm relatively new to Android and just got my Legend today.
Was trying to make a goldcard but stores are closed and I have no microSD writer. So I figured I should be able to make a goldcard on the phone itself. Couldn't find ANYONE anywhere who has actually done this.
But I needed root. I have a Canadian Virgin Mobile Legend at:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Build Number: 2.02.666.3 CLI177708 release-keys
I found this KillingInTheNameOf binary. I pushed it and ran it and got root shell. Hooray !
Next step please nobody do unless you understand and take full responsibility if brick etc.
So I went to Legend Settings and formatted SD card and unmounted it. Then I ran:
dd bs=512 if=/sqlite_stmt_journals/goldcard.img of=/dev/block/vold/179:0
(I dunno if outfile "of" is same for all SDcards/phones, but it's right for mine.)
So I THINK I have a valid goldcard now. Was looking to downgrade to 1.31 RUU, so I can install ClockworkMod Recovery, ROM Manager, and some ROM or another.
But I'm wondering, now that I have root, albeit temporary, is their some shortcut I can use to get CMR etc. ?
Sorry, I don't think anyone has managed to change ROMs using temporary root. However, I just made the goldcard when it was in the phone; when the phone is mounted as a disk drive the pc just sees the SD card, not the phone. I don't think there's any danger in doing that!

Sure it is... just S-OFF your Legend and you'll be able to write to /dev/block/mtdblock? with no hassle.

I actually just enabled UMS and used the phone as card reader. Some fdisk and dd later I had my goldcard and used Paul O'Brien's method to get permanent root.
So yes, it's perfectly valid to do it like that.
I wrote this last November...
You can S-OFF your legend with the modded alpharev flasher. Look in the development forum for the post.
Sent from my S-OFF Bell Canada HTC Legend.
Thanks all !
I went the normal, traditional route and am now running CM7 nightly.
Guess I'll presume the Bell S-Off is good on Virgin model and try that now.
Radio sucks though.

[Q] Unrevoked for nand save ?

Hi guys,
I got my Incredible S two days ago and i'm wonder if there is a way to make saves of the phone with unrevoked or with an other app ?
At the moment there is no way to unlock the NAND, but we are working on it

Ok thx for the answer...
I tought it was possible to just make a save without unlock it ^^
thx
It is possible to do things like take a rom dump from the phone. The problem is there's no way to flash these back. NAND lock renders the /system area read-only except in recovery, which only accept update.zip files signed by HTC.
So, you can save the info you have on there.. you just can't do anything with it on the incredible s at the moment!

sadly not because unrevoked refuses to run stating "Your Vivo is not currently supported".
You would have to be a bit more manual about it... i don't have time to detail it but this guide for the HTC Desire is something you can follow broadly.

[Q] Noob Rooting? removing carrier bloatware

hi people,
new to the forum, never realised this site existed, thankfully im now a member of this great information community
i am new to the whole rooting phones and software blah blah,
i currently have a htc incredible s with optus (australian software) on it,
now i am wanting to remove all the bloatware and just put a standard htc software on the phone that will allow me to upgrade to ics when it comes out in june for my model phone?
now i am not interested in customizing the rom or flashing it with any other aftermarket software, i just want to the original on there,
please note i am noob, and i have tried some of the methods already suggested, but still not having any luck,
so can some1 please shed me some light and explain to me how to do this in a noob manner please?
any info is appreciated
thanks
What methods have you tried?
HTC boot loader unlocked?
Lynts guide?
Novers tool ?
Sent from my Incredible S using xda premium
i have tried a program called revolutinary or something, but bare with me as i am very noob,
if you have any other easy methods, id highly appreciate it
Hi dont worry i started off as a noob to so dont worry!
I am also with optus! YAY!
I need to know your hboot version and if you are s - off!
Here are some noob steps!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Go to Menu (The third button from the left on the buttons at the button). Then click Settings. Then goto Applications. Then uncheck the box called 'Fastboot'
2. Turn off your phone (If you don't know how to, unlock the screen and hold the power button until a menu pops up, then press power off/shut down!
3. When phone is completely shut down, hold the volume down button and the power button, (Hold it for a few seconds). A screen should pop up.
4. Note down all the information and private message me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This will show me what method you need to use. So Private Message me A.S.A.P!
Every Australian with an Inc S nearly is Optus lol
OPTUS IS HOPELESSSS COMING FROM TELSTRA
Sorry just wanted to vent my frustration
Anyway if you root, you will not be able to install the OTA. Whichever method you use. Apart from temp root, but it will be lost after reboot.
If you want to root, whichever way you do it (I recommend Revolutionary), you will be able to install an ICS custom rom, assuming one will be made.
Just a warning if you wanted to root now and install the update later on
That is not possible :/

yeh i gotta admit optus suks compared to telstra in connection , speed and coverage

Just like you I was new to this also. I used Revolutionary which seemed fine for me. The one piece of advice I could give you is follow the instructions to the letter, I jumped steps, root failed.
Tried again this time more slowly and hey presto it worked and my phone is now rooted and S-Off.
As for roms just search these forums under your phone and read em, do the research first cos that will really help you later on. This made my phone loads better and got rid of the orange bloatware that I really hated, hence looking via google on these forums for options.
Cant stress this enough rooting is the way forward
Have fun

True, but do not attempt it unless you know exactly what you are doing and the risks it involves.
The bloatware on optus is ridiculous, NONE of the things I ever used. Just sitting there looking stupid in my app drawer, wasting valuable space and ram
That said, I would rather have an unrooted stock phone than a bricked one lol
so no 1 can help? wow
btw i have hboot 2.00.000
seems to not root

Revolutinary will not work with HBOOT 2.00.0000. You need to do this method/procedure first before you can use Revolutionary.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373697
The other option is to unlock the bootloader using the procedure at HTCDEV.com and then flash ClockworkMod recovery and then finally you can flash su-3.0.7-efghi.zip to root the Optus ROM. Then you could use Titianium backup to cleanup the bloatware.
u might have to explain it a little better for me pls, as this is my first time doing this, like i said in the op + the download is a dead link my friend

OK I hate to be so blunt, but it sounds like you need to do a lot more reading and studying about your options and how to perform the procedure before you continue.
The days of simple one-click rooting for noobs on an IncS are no more my friend.
You need to understand how to use the Android SDK tools such as adb.exe and fastboot.exe in order to root your system these days, so I suggest you begin by reading the sticky posts in this forum and then find out how to use adb and fastboot.

[Q] Update easy step by step guide to HTC salsa root?

Hello everyone,
Firstly what a great website. Thank you. I am a 'noob', I have watched the video, searched the posts etc, However as someone who understands very little technological jargon, I was looking for a step by step, recent, updated guide to rooting the HTC Salsa.
Now don't be fooled...I actually have no idea about rooting...I have only just learned about this from searching internal memory issues. However, I am good and following step by step instructions/videos etc
So, can anyone link me to the correct thread, if it has already been posted or help to guide me?
Thanks in advance

there are several others..
Now the route for rooting just got easier....its much more easier to flash a new rom.....as it comes with preroot anyway, saving a lot of time and agro!
its a choice thats up to you!
Go here >http://www.wix.com/bigbearevo/salsa for how to create stuff and do stuff to your phone! I compiled it so people could find it easier...
Thank you BBE,
however I'd be lying if I said that I fully understood any of that!!
I am happy to choose whatever is the easier option, although I am not sure which that is. I looked on your website, but I really didn't understand what part I should be following. I could also not see how to join.
So, would it be possible for you advise me again, with one option that is the easiest. I do not know what flashing a ROM is, but am happy to follow instructions.
Thanks for your patience
Ruthie
Lol that's nps
Ok few questions first to help find which route you want to take.
Do you want to Change what your using right now?
I mean by u are using sense stock.
Check in android development for Roms of choice to figure out what u like.
Flashing is the process in which you install a new rom.
I myself am a serial flasher, meaning while I make Roms I constantly flash my phone lol.
What do u want out of rooting?
Are u just going for the increased memory or do u want a change in appearance too?
The options are.
Keep your stock rom, root it and increase memory.
Flash a custom rom, pleanty around now, advantage with this is most things are Inc that u would have to do on stock rom.
To do this also. U may need to su things prior.
Just to start you off.
Turn off phone and pull out battery.
Reinsert battery, hold down volume key and press power with volume key pressed down.
HBOOT will appear. At the top will be alot of numbers etc. I need to see if you have old or new updates.
If u have old u may need to unlock bootloader with updates first. Easy to do.
Fill in this and choose the way u want and I shall help you succeed in your goal.

Wasn't me............ ;-)
Hi BBE
I still don't understand the abbreviations: nps, su etc?
Anyway this is what phone says:
ICON_g PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.07.0000
MICROP-0558
RADIO-7.51.35.19
Dec 15 2011, 12:57:05
I am ideally looking to increase memory. My phone has been stuck without functioning properly for about 4 weeks now. I am happy to include a new ROM if this also increases my memory, but to be honest I don't really care about changing the image of my phone but am happy to do so if this helps.
I am not really sure what I am looking for in my 'ROM of choice' so there is little point in me looking unless it is really obvious? But perhaps you can guide me?
Thanks again
Ruthie
P.S I am more than happy to get rid of many of vodafones pre-installed applications.

nps = no problems
look in rom development section, see threads with[ROM] in it, see pictures and whats included in the roms it self.
personally if you want standard use a sense rom
Options are
Thing rom
Bigbear x series V10
Minds sense 3.5
reason i state this is the rooting part.
All custom roms have root/New SU (Superuser rights app)
This is required to run the increased memory.
NOTE Updating HBOOT?UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER WILL WIPE YOUR ROM CLEAN.
BACK EVERYTHING UP U CAN
You need to update your HBOOT.
Goto HTCDev >http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
Register (takes a few mins)
plug your phone into the pc and select charge option.
Download these >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?68k4zzzeamjwswt
extract these in to a new folder on c: called Android
now follow instructions to update your HBOOT.
Ok assuming the HBOOT is now updated via HTCDev
You can follow the rest of the instructions to unlock the bootloader, takes around 15mins or so.
So you got the email with the unlock.bin file.
add that into the Android folder u made with those files in there.
Follow instructions again to begin your unlock.
All Done.
so you have updated the HBOOT and unlock bootloader....
Good now for the next bit.
Installing CWM 5
This is a program installed into the phone itself.
This allows you to do pretty much anything you want.
Main thins are Backup and restore of your device.
Flashing of custom Roms
here is recovery >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bumma6im6fu8q4b
this is pretty easy to do.

Once you have done this, then its upto you if your root it or install a new rom.

New Memory
So to increase the memory partition u need to complete the previous task.
Now then.
Tools required for this next task.
Minitool partition wizard >http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
SD READER for your pc.
About 30mins of your time.
Ok to start with
Turn off your phone, remove sd and place into the reader and into your pc via USB slot.
Now open up The partition wizard.
Personally id back up your sd right now...just in case.
Now select your sd and create a new partition
You want to create and EXT3 partition and select it as Primary only, apply actions, now it will do its thing, watch as it works.
Now if this has completed the sd may register as bad....don't worry.
Unplug reader and reinsert back to pc, now you should have 2 partitions on your sd EXT3 max 1gb and the rest fat32
this shouldn't have touched your fat32 section but if you didn't follow it right and it got wiped...just copy back your backup onto the sd now.
ok reinsert the sd into your phone and start it up.
now to get access to this new memory...it all depends on what rom you are using.
On stock or stock based rom which have NO APPS2SD.
all roms state if this has it or not. mine dont.
now using a set script you have to flash this in recovery mode to enable the new memory.
For APPS2SD use this >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?qr5rh2fho1hnbnl
Roms WITHOUT APPS2SD >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?duigp9ky9796b65
Using the wrong one will cause problems so be very clear what u want.
reboot phone and enjoy new memory.

Try not to add in a thread into your post. It takes up so much space and isn't required. Answer to your question is yes of course u can root without s-off. Its called unlocking your bootloader. Then add recoveery then root. Its easy. Please follow my guide in other threads to do this.

HTC Salsa Memory
Hi Big Bear, primarily thank you for all your posts and info which I found really helpful.
My Phone:HTC Salsa
HBOOT-1.07.0000
My problem is:
I used XTC Clip to S-OFF my HTC Salsa, and rooted it. My main aim is to increase its internal memory. So I followed the thread step by step. After rooting the phone (downloaded "root.zip"), I did the 3 wipes and installed CWM 5.0.2.6. Booted phone and all was fine. I did the 3 wipes again, booted the phone and allowed the ROM to fully boot. Then I entered into the HBOOT --> Recovery --> Install zip from SD Card --> installed "htc-data2sd-ext3.zip" and rebooted phone. I used 16gb Class 10 micro (Partitioned using Minitool to ext3 using just 800mb and the rest FAT32, first partition FAT32 and the second partition ext3 both as Primary). I was really happy with the result as when I booted my SD showed 800mb of free space.
I started to download my favourite applications and all was fine. I then switched off phone, placed the SIM and switched back on. Phone reception was very low too, just one or two bars but otherwise all was fine for about an hour until it started to give me several errors of Force Closing. SMSs won't arrive as when I clicked messages, it Force Closes, the same happened with the GMAIL application. I restored the phone to my back up and I did the process all again for about 6 times even using different SD cards but the result was always the same.
So now I restored again, using CWM 5026, created ext3 partition again and downloaded Link2SD. This however is making almost no difference and my internal memory left is now only about 40mb. Phone is working fine, Full Mobile Network Reception, messages work fine too but I did not solve the memory problem.
Am I missing something? Any help from you is greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from you when you have time.
Thank you so much once again.
Cheers,

Cheers,
ExplorerOn

Can I upgrade Hboot from 1.07 to 1.08 since I am now S-OFF? If yes, how can I go about it?
Thank you for your help.
HTC Salsa Hboot 1.08.000
Hi Vigoos, thank you once again for your help. I have managed to follow another thread about Hboot Update for S-OFF. I followed it, updated the bootloader and now I have 1 gb of ext3 memory.
Thanks to you, Problem solved. Wonderful job, keep it up!
Cheers:good:
Please help
Hey @BigBearEvo
I intend to root my friends HTC Salsa and I think yours is the best method out there. The rest kinda confuse me. However, the links dont seem to work. I am unable to download anything.
I understand that your post is old and there could be some updates as of today. Do you know of any better method or how to go about?
All my friend wants to do is get some more internal memory.
Thanks

nps = no problems
look in rom development section, see threads with[ROM] in it, see pictures and whats included in the roms it self.
personally if you want standard use a sense rom
Options are
Flashing of custom Roms
here is recovery >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bumma6im6fu8q4b
this is pretty easy to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438804
this shows how to install the recovery.

Using the wrong one will cause problems so be very clear what u want.
reboot phone and enjoy new memory.
here are my guides showing the how 2
HTC Unlock >http://bigbearevo.wix.com/salsa/faqs---guides#!__faqs---guides
Install recovery >http://bigbearevo.wix.com/salsa/faqs---guides#!__faqs---guides/recovery
EXT3 Creation > http://bigbearevo.wix.com/salsa/faqs---guides#!__faqs---guides/ext3-creation
ive tried to explain everything i can...any problems PM or email me

my deustch is rusty but google search works just fine
too many "clever dicks" here that are too lazy to search or do things the hard way
nothing simple about rooting a phone in most cases since you could potential soft brick your phone if you use the wrong software
have a search through the forums there are plenty of tutorials on how to root the phone and lots of help in fixing it if you fail to root it
first rule of these XDA forums
Thanks folks - I understood "no", so I have to do the hard way.
I just had the hope the manufacturer have learned from the results of the communities like here and recognised the benefits of root access.
I fear I see you later... when google doesn't help

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147852 this as easy as it will get. flash recovery via odin, flash root.zip via cwm, install triangle away and reset binary counter.
or you could use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2185700 which is guides you through it but might cost you depending on your phone.
good luck!

even though there are benefits to having root access there are also risks involved
android is designed in this way as a form of security
each individual application creates its own user when its installed
the user created by the application is then restricted to only being able to access the files for the application and no other files
Thaks!
@Gabhain
Thank you - That's I was looking for!
