Official Motorola Car Mount - Defy Accessories

Hi,
I have pre-ordered one of these from Play.com as they are doing it for £22.50 where as everywhere else is selling for £30 RRP or sometimes more.
Anyone got their hands on one yet? I pre-ordered a few weeks ago when i first got my Defy and the stock status has gone from stock arriving 29th Nov to Awaiting Stock. I guess the weather isn't helping.

I've wanting to order one as well. Look forward to any feedback people have.

Many thanks for that info, have just ordered one from Play.com - showing as in stock now, but with this snow who knows how long it will take to arrive.
It's going to look just dandy on my motorbike!

Status is now updated to 'Packing' so hopefully will have it soon enough.
I'm going to assume the mail will slow for a while yet while they clear backlog so if i have it by next weekend that'll be good enough for me.
(and besides, i need to switch over my car stereo before i can use the audio lead)

Thats the stereo switched over, just waiting for my car mount and 16GB sdcard now.

I ordered a car mount today, went from 2-5 days when I ordered it to approx 17th December just after I paid.. bastards..

That's maybe when they are expecting staff to get through the snow and dispatch it!

Hi, I was very lazy and ordered the first genuine Motorola one i saw on the web from clove. I didn't notice the price didn't include tax or postage. Doh!
Its a great mount,if a little bulky. I didn't know about magnet to trigger the car dock app. So as I started playing I clicked the phone in and the app came on its like Wow (yes i am easily pleased). And if you dont like the Auto trigger just put the phone in the other way round and the magnet is in the wrong place to work.

I can't really tell from the pics, but do you have to plug the micro usb in separately or is it one motion. i.e. is the cable separate or is it firmly attached to the cradle?
Also does the cradle rotate to be long ways instead of wide?

accordng to expansys description :
Power-pass through –power connection with insertion of the phone, no 2ndstep required. Simply plug in the included In Car Charger into the back of the mount.

yea, read that, would just like to see some actual pictures.
I've ordered it anyway, so I just need to get some patience.

car mount
The micro usb connection is completely separate. There are no sides to the mount at all, only a back and the little corner clips. So two actions.
There are two little tabs on the back that you can clip the power cord to, and leave a little loop to plug the charger into the phone. You could then route the cable out of the way of the
radio or heater controls and not have to re-route it every time.
But as I have previously wrecked a usb connection on my last phone I plug it in on my lap pushing very gently. Then clip phone into the mount.
The phone holder to the suction cup stand is a ball and socket joint, so it can be twisted and rotated through any angle. It can also be tightened, to lock the position.
Hope this helps. C

thanks,
so much for the expansys description..

Could you post a picture?

where did you get yours from?
I pre-ordered from play.com and still haven't received it yet (although it has been dispatched). I know things have been bad in the UK but thats been about 10 days.

I bought mine from Clove
w w w. clove. co. uk I cant post links as still a newbie
But worked out at nearly £33 with tax and shipping, it did arrive in 2 days, but would rather have waited at a cheaper price.
Some other orders for stuff (from different suppliers) took 12 working days.
It was 2nd class post which is quoted as 8-10 working days, so what with the Xmas post yours should arrive any day, but a polite mail to them wouldn't hurt.
New toys never arrive quick enough.
Im not with my car, I will try and take some pics on monday if you still want them.?
Thanks N

I for one would love some high res pictures of it - not for mounting it in my car, but for taking it apart and mounting it on my bike, replacing this thing I made for my HTC Desire.

car mount photos
Hi,
hear are some photos, taken with my Defy. I did take some with my camera with the Defy in the dock, but it looks like my pc is not seeing the SD card.
Your diy mount looks great. My kind of modding, hacksaw and zip ties and minimal planning!
I had thought of getting 2 mounts, the extra one i was going to look at making a bike mount for.
but I dont think it would make a good starting point for a bike mount. Not for the price anyway.
The phone is not that tightly held in the mount. You can pull it straight out without releasing any of the corner tabs. Fine for driving unless your on the Paris-Dakar, but wouldn't trust it on a bike.
On my last phone bike mount hack (Nokia 6220 classic) from
e cell shop E Bay
I just put a couple of elastic bands around it and it was fine. But as the defy has such a great and big screen there's little room for anything across the front. This was a dry weather mount only!
You can buy adjustable car mounts for less than £10, thats 3 goes at modding for the same price as the Motorola. or
Wouldn't it just slip in your current mount?
Hope this helps N.

thanks for the pics, very disappointed its a 2 part process to mount and attach the cable.. o well. I'm expecting mine in the post late this week.
I probably wont put one my mountain bike since its more 4x (hard to get lost on those trails) but will probably get one for my Motorbike.

Car cradle/holder (for navigation)

Hi,
Anyone can suggest a very good car cradle/holder for Kaiser?
The one that has power connector of course.
I cant use my old cradle (I used it with the Magician) because the usb power location is different (opposite).
you could always face the phone in the other direction...
I have always been very impressed with the powered holders from:
http://www.proclipusa.com
I have already asked them about the Kaiser, and they confirmed they are making one, it just isn't available yet.

Yes, and it has been listed for several weeks. But after you place the order, you will see that it is backordered. I ordered mine over 2 weeks ago and it still hasn't shipped.
In spite of this, I have always liked my proclip holsters and holders.
I ordered one last week and it is due to be delivered on Wednesday. I've owned 4 other proclip device mounts and 3 car mounts, and have loved all of them. If you've never used a proclip mount, it will probably cost you $90-100 or so for the device mount and car mount combined. Their car mounts are pretty slick also.
Shipping Ship Date Tracking Number

AT&T Tilt 8925 968752 USD $69.99 1 USD $69.99
I ordered and received my ProClip about a month ago, and absolutely love it. I will say that it does take a little getting used to sliding it in. Since the Tilt sits forward in the clip (gap behind the Tilt) so that the keyboard can slide, it can be a bit of a trick in the beginning figuring out just how to slide it in, especially when doing it without looking. But now, I can slide it in without looking, and have no issues at all.
For those looking for a cheap solution, the Kaiser is actually slim enough to fit into most cellphone vent mounts, if you trim the cushions a little bit. That solution is also less obtrusive and less likely to get your car broken into.

Suction cup mount

Can anyone recommend a suction cup mount that I can use in the car? It doesn't have to be made specifically for the MyTouch, I just want to be able to see the navigation while i drive instead of constantly looking down at my cup holder.
I'm in the market for one too. I would like to buy it as a christmas gift for my Boss.

i third this!
I am using this one here:
http://www.amazon.com/Holder-T-Mobi..._1_3?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1259151227&sr=8-3
It gets the job done. The suction works just fine, have had no instances of it coming off, and my phone has never come out of the mount. The only thing is, be careful with the ratcheting mechanism... when I first got mine I forced it a bit hard without pressing in the release button, and now it doesn't always stay centered and skips teeth sometimes but still works.
It has an open space in the center of the bottom so you can still connect power/audio. It holds the phone well, has rubbery foam on the side arms to grip the phone. For $10 its worth it, IMHO.
Head over to your local large electronics retailer (Best Buy, Future Shop, Radio Shacketc) and look in the GPS and IPhone sections. I bet you could also order it through Amazon.
I have seen the same mount under multiple brand names there. It is around $30 in Canada, so figure $20sh in the US. The one I have is called the "Grip-iT" by Scosche. Allows the phone to be held vertically and horizontally, has a longer flexible neck to position it and a really strong suction cup mount. Also comes with an adhesive mount disk if you have to mount it that way (some places don't allow windshield mounts).
I use it mostly in a fullsized pickup with a stiff suspension and have had no problems with it coming loose.
The one I have is this one:
http://www.scosche.com/products/sfID1/337/sfID2/344/productID/1593
I would stay away from this one as it is a PITA (at least in my GMC truck, which has fairly standard air vents) to mount:
http://www.scosche.com/products/sfID1/210/sfID2/337/productID/1594
What ever you do don't buy the cheap Bell brand mp3/pda window mount kit. They are usually found in the discount stores like Wal-Mart, K-mart, etc. The clamp swivel is loose, it can't keep the phone up at a pleasant viewing angle. If you hit a good bump the phone shoots out from the poor grip and the clamp closing by the pressure of the spring. Ugh, pure garbage and a great way to get in a car accident.
Off both of what you guys found and use, are they universal?? Meaning as in, can I swap my sapphire with my g1 or other devices. I guess I should just be asking if the width is very adjustable and or can you change the angle from portrait to landscape easily?? Thanks guys. Just doing my research before I ask for one for x-mas
I have been using this one for a few weeks now.. It's actually very sturdy and becuase its made specifically for our phones, it looks sooo much better and very smooth compared to the other universal ones.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170391719566&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
When you order, keep in mind it's coming from china..it took around 3 weeks to receive but well worth the wait.
It's sticks to the windshield like a champ and will not budge unless you use the release tab. Highley recommended for nav pruposes.

[Q] Has anyone used the Car Docking Kit?

When the streak comes available to the US, I will more than likley be buying the home docking station as well as the car docking kit.
My only worry is that once I have the car docking kit, the Streak will fall off when hitting potholes. Living near Chicago, potholes are abundant and prominent .
Has anyone used this car docking kit and could give me some feedback?
.
Not yet, they haven't been shipped.
I've got one on order and the guestimated delivery date is 2nd July.
Once I've got it I'll do a video unboxing and test drive and show you what it's like.
update: Date now changed to 5th July (Better not be later as I go on holiday on the 9th)

Hi!
My car dock just broke this morning while I was trying to slide my phone in.

Ah I am sorry to hear that, at least the car docking kit is reasonably priced.
I try to hold the bottom of the base of the dock when sliding it down in.
Thanks for the pics
I have my car dock and it seems quite fine.
It is sturdy enough to not bounce around on my motorcycle
once you break it in a bit (get it in some warm sun) it can even accept the phone while in the dell poly slip case
If anything It's too good! If you leave it attached to the windscreen for a few days It's a pain to get off.
The phone wobbles around a bit, but that's just due to the weight of the streak.
Good purchase overall though

Hmm, Pre-order and the pictures are faked (charging lead plugging in the left hand side?). Best wait till after their September due date and check again, it looks like it will be a nice solution if it arrives.
I bought a universal car dock from ebay and whilst the phone fits (kind of) the streak is just so damn heavy it shakes about A LOT. It's usable, but very irritating.
Not sure what these 2 will be like though, but watch out for shaking
saving seller for future use.

Sure... aside from the over-inflated price. I bought mine from a local Wireless Wave here in Toronto and it works just as well for $20 taxes in.
Dell car kit far from perfect
I bought the car kit from Dell, and no matter whether the device is hanging from the windshield or off the dash, the Streak bounces around like mad when I am driving. My car is nowhere NEAR that bad - it is a heavy device and an awkward mount.
I just ordered a GPS t-mount from ProClip that might work well. I will take the sleeve the Streak sits in on the gooseneck and mount that on the ProClip mount, then attach that to the vehicle mount made for my car. That should lock the device down.
It's an expensive solution, but I spend about an hour each way commuting daily, so it is really a necessity for me. My mount should be here on Wednesday, and if anyone is interested I will write it up and post a picture or two if it works.
pictures would be awesome.
Do you see anyway to have the adapter attached (jerry-rigged) to the mount so that it plugs in when you insert the Streak?
I am looking for a way, as plugging the cable in is extremely tempermental, and a pain, to be honest!!
I suppose you could do something on the bottom of the Dell sleeve to hold the cable. I will have my cable secured on the console and the mount, so it is no problem for me to plug it in the bottom of the phone when I put it in the stand.
The mount comes in tomorrow. Can't wait. Had to slam on the brakes on the way home today and it looked like my phone was on the business end of a trebuchet...

In the US it is only 39.99.... not too expensive if you ask me. Plus this car docking kit really is perfect for the Streak. The sides are flexible rubber that hold the Streak and on the back there are rubber pads so absolutely no plastic is touching the Streak resulting in no scratches. Plus you get a a cable with it.
Perfection is worth the 40 bucks. Although I would love to see images of the one you purchased and seem pleased with.
I have the Dell car kit and I like it. It seems reasonably priced at $40 since it comes with a cigar lighter-USB adapter and USB cable as separate items. One can never have too many charging cables or options. The mount does jiggle a bit however this can be cured by positioning the mount so the cradle rests on top of the dash rather than suspended in mid-air.

I'm looking to use the dell case inners for a car holder. I have some garmin mounts that will allow me to fix to the dash.
The issue with the ones from ebay (original post) the holding part is covering the power pdmi connector.

Anyone thinking of making their own car mount should make clearance for the camera lens so it can be used as a dash-cam. Dell did not do this and it would require some cutting on their kit.

I acutally brought one of these:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/clingo-universal-in-car-holder-p25398.htm
The arm is solid but since it still sticks out a fair bit and the phone is kinda heavy, it does bounce a little (nothing compared to the flexi arms you find on most other phone holders). And since the Dell has a flat back, it sticks pretty well too (though I have had it drop once but I think that was cos my brother didn't put it on properly and due to the weight, it slowly peeled itself off). The pad only covers a small area of the back of the phone so you can use the camera, and there's also no clamps that would obscure the charging port or the buttons on top.
If the docking station was cheaper, I'd seriously consider getting another one for the car, that way I can easily put it on and take it off with super easy and I can leave the cable plugged in and just tuck it away (saves so much time when I do multiple deliveries and stuff).

Car Mount

Anybody know if there is a car mount available that is either specific to the Holiday, or one that is universal but works just as well? I want to try iOnRoad:
Not that I need it, because I'm a good driver.. lol just curious as to how well it works. Plus, I use navigation on occasion and it would be nice to have a real mount rather than propping the phone up on the dash or holding it.
Here you are.
Awesome. But, you know, I can't really Google any car mounts Vivid users have already tried out and experienced for themselves. Because even though I have, I haven't found any. So that's really why I asked. Nice try, though.

next time, maybe you should check the google links before trying to be funny... you know... the ones that don't actually have mounts for the vivid...
thanks.
While they don't have one for the Vivid/Raider yet, I've always used ProClip mounts (Brodit outside of North America). They come in two pieces, one custom fit to the vehicle and one custom fit to the phone, and I like it very much. I've emailed them to see if they'll make a Vivid mount, but they gave the standard "We don't know what our plans are" answer. If people are interested, email them, maybe if they get enough questions, they'll actually make one!
The ProClips are ok. I've used them before. However, I've really grown to like the Scosche universal that you can find at Walmart. It uses two small bottom feet and has sticky gel on the back to hold the phone.
It comes with a windshield mount. When the gel loses its stick, just clean it with a damp rag. Mine has lasted through three cellphones and going.
Kensigton Universal Car Mount
I just bought this a few weeks ago and it work excellent with the Vivid, it holds the phone securely and has very minimalist design. To remove the phone from the holder is just a press of a button. I used the vent clip mounting option, as I prefer not to obstruct the windshield with anything. Below is the link to the product page on Amazon, which is where I bought it from.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003SE6LD0
I picked up a thunderbolt dock last night at Verizon (only $10) cut off the left side (farthest from plug) and it fits and world really well, im ganna add some foam to the back so it fits in better and more securely.
I am actually using a Kensington iPhone car mount (can't post a link yet) granted my Vivid isn't in a case but its only about $10 on Amazon and it holds the phone snugly while given access to the charging port and can rotate from lanscape to portrait easily.
The only issue I have is that the mic on this phone is so weak that I can't be heard on the phone if I answer on speakerphone while driving. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Anyone know if htc makes different cradles for their car docks? I recently looked at an htc car mount/ dock for an evo 3d and it looks like an amazing mount with superior quality. I found a way to take off the evo 3d specific "cradle" and was wondering why they designed it that way if I couldn't find any other cradles online. It would totally make sense if I could go to a parts website and just buy the cheap cradle part. The mount is clearance at Best Buy so this would be the best inexpensive option I think.

Ive actually been in the market for a vent mount myself. I dont like window mounts mainly because they put your phone where it's sitting right in the sun the entire time its in the mount. Vent mounts help some to keep it out of the sun. I haven't bought one yet, but I plan to in the near future. However, before I do, I think I'm going to try this first. Found it in another thread, thought I'd share it here too.
http://lifehacker.com/5747897/how-to-build-a-car-mount-for-your-cellphone-from-office-supplies
My personal favorite is still the Mountek.
My first mount for my Inspire was a mountek. It worked great for what it is. I read somewhere that:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0052G6IRG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
can be modified to fit the phone. Mine is due to arrive tomorrow and found this thread looking for the other thread lol. IIRC you have to modify (or cut off for the less handy) the portion of the mount that curves around the top of the phone (mic jack area). No worried as the USB port with firm top/bottom clamping should hold the phone from lateral movement in landscape modes. I definately would not try to have it hold the phone upside down when modified.
Try a type similar to the Rocketfish Universal mount...
Hi guys,
Just recently got the Vivid. Best Buy sells the Rocketfish Universal mount for about $25 or so. I'm sure there's something similar out on the web...I like this mount because I can move the arms/feet around the buttons and still secure the phone in mount. Useful if you have a GPS (like google navigate doesn't do a fair job) or another phone that you swap in and out with...
Would love to find a mount suitable for a '95 Honda VT1100 (though with some velcro strapping the Rocketfish would work. Any suggestions there?

Does yours allow the phone to actually charge properly? Mine it just slowly drains, figured I would see what your results were before dropping even more money on yet another cig lighter to usb port. My current one is spec'd to 500mA so if its functioning its provides the juice.
EDIT: Tested in car mode attached directly to the charger and it still slowly drained. must not be the dock then :/
