Email app? - Nook Color General

Anyone have a good solution for email? Gmail app doesn't work, and the browser based gmail is slow enough to make me not want to do it.
Maybe the Tab email app?

K9 Email. Open source android email client. Works great.
code.google.com/p/k9mail/

Excellent -- exactly what I needed.

Does K9 provide notifications in the notification bar on the NC?

Yep, it does.

BTW is multi-touch working for anyone within K-9 mail. I can pinch and zoom using k-9 from my Samsung Vibrant but it doesnt work on the NC. I have enabled the option from the settings and all i get is the -+ overlay to zoom but not pinch to zoom.
I already have enabled multitouch systemwide using the xml file posted at the forums.

Agree that K-9 is the best alternative to GMail for now.

I take it Touchdown for Exchange... It's an OK app but it isn't worth the 20 dollars. Though I take it it's that pricey because of the stupid licensing fees to Gates

I also like MailDroid.

Does TD work on the Nook Color ? Another thread indicated that it installed but wouldn't get their email. You can run with a full 30-day trial version of TD without paying anything.

Haven't tried... but I will sometime today.

Hi! I'm one of K-9's developers. Multitouch zoom in K-9 didn't behave correctly until embarrassingly recently.
I can't yet post links to xda-dev, but
code.google.com/p/k9mail/downloads/detail?name=k9-3.319-release.apk
should behave for you on your NC. (The NC is now my test device for a Tablet mode for K-9)

Just wait until I figure out what that means!

Ended up getting a copy of Moxier Mail. A lot nicer looking than Touchdown and it works really nice. Does Exchange too so i'm happy about that.

Hi Obra,
Can you pls let me know that the "correct behavior" is supposed to be. I am running the latest 3.319 release. I have enabled the pinch-zoom option from the settings->interactions menu of K-9. When I try to pinch zoom I get a -+ overlay which enables me to zoom but it is not the same as pinch zoom which I can use on my Vibrant running 2.1.
Tks.

Anybody know how this guy got Gmail on his nookColor?

Vlingo for Android Now Available!?!?!?

I have been a long time fan of Vlingo for Blackberry and I read that it is now available for Android. I can't seem to find it in the market and I even went to www.vlingo.com/getvlingo. When I pull up the link it opens the market and says that there are no results for my search? Has anyone been able to successfully install this on the N1 running Froyo? If so, please enlighten me on how to do so.
Also, does this new version support Bluetooth voice dial since 2.2 has the ability now? One more thing, I did the build.prop mod to show all protected apps in the Market. Maybe that has something to do with it? If so, how do I revert this as well?

Vlingo pulls up fine for me - stock 2.1 (search for vlingo pulls it right up)
I'm on Froyo and can't pull up vlingo either (also went through Market and the getvlingo links).
Can anyone throw it up on a mirror?
Thanks!

well, considering that voice to text should be available in any field that you are using the stock keyboard (i use swype, so i only turn stock on when i'm in the car), seems like vlingo is worthless
maybe i'm wrong
Thats pretty deceiving, since you can use the built-in android VR to compose emails and txt messages. I've done it many times, and it works great. I also use it to update my facebook status. As far as i can tell, there's really nothing that you CAN'T do with the built in VR, since you can use it anywhere you can use the keyboard.
Just got a reply back from support.
I was asked if my phone is rooted and if so that's the issue because the Market blocks Dev and Rooted phones.
Errrrr, hmmmm.
Anybody going to dish out 10 bucks for it and give us a review?

I got the exact same email from them about 5 minutes ago. I was solely interested in BETTER Bluetooth voice dial which they DON'T support at this time... I'm over it!
I suspect it doesn't show up in the market on Froyo devices because Google changed their voice recognition API in Froyo. They'll have to make some changes to the code and compile it with the 2.2 sdk.
I bought the app on my 2.1 Droid. The voice recognition is a lot better than Google's. I can actually use this, talk naturally, and don't have to worry about making corrections after the fact. I've got it mapped to hold on search hardware button, I say "Send an email to John Doe subject look at this message I composed this entire email without using my keyboard". It will ask me to verify the contact and email address I want to send to, let me choose to send with gmail or my exchange account, and insert the subject line and text in the message automatically. It's very slick and makes voice recognition really useful on android.

Read my post above yours. This is what they were referring to.
As far as froyo support, I may be wrong: http://blog.vlingo.com/2010/05/android-22-froyo-support-for-vlingo.html
Bottom line is that as soon as Android Market flips the switch and recognizes the 2.2 OS as an officially released OS, Vlingo will show up as available for download. We'll certainly let you know once Android Market makes the change, and all you Froyo pioneers will be free to download Vlingo at your leisure.

So the only difference is that you can create and send an email without actually opening the Gmail app?
That's still false advertising as you can indeed Compose an email through voice.
If they made a distinction between "open apps using your voice", then it would be correct. But the way they are phrasing it is totally false.
I bought it, mapped it to long-press search button. The very first time I used it, it worked perfectly. "Text Google Weather [my zip code]" and sure enough, Handcent opened and the TXT was 100% correct. That was the only time it worked though. Everything else was close, but enough off I had to manually input something (find the correct contact or change the body of the message). Wasn't very impressed with it at all.

Trillian beta for Android w/Push

http://www.trillian.im/learn/tour-android.html
Trillian for Android beta. It's really nice so far, been using it for a few days.
Most important thing to me is push notifications. While it doesn't indicate that it has push notifications, it most certainly does. In the settings make sure you check Push Email notifications and battery saving mode (this is how I have it configured). Don't worry, if you have Froyo you won't get any e-mails, it'll just push. I've tested it from another AIM app. On the home screen with the screen off I get IM's instantly every time I've tried it, with no e-mails. This is the first developer app I've personally seem that uses push.
It doesn't seem to poll or use the battery any. I've run it every day with AIM and Facebook chat and my spare parts doesn't show it using the battery and neither does my standard battery info section.
Seems pretty awesome so far. I haven't shut it off yet. Hopefully everyone else's experience is the same.
I've used trillian on my desktop for years, and I've had the beta on my since I got it back in August. The only gripe I have is that if you leave MSN running on your computer, and you sign in on Trillian from your phone, it wipes your display picture and your display theme.
** edit - n/m it loaded fine since I have Cognition/Rooted etc.
Looks awesome - have to see how the battery life is on the phone with it loaded.

Yes, it appears to be using C2DM. I wasn't aware Beejive was using it though, but that's good. More developers need to get on board. Ideally the IM app should NEVER poll or communicate to the server in any way. Run it in the background but just so it opens quicker. Use Push to receive messages.
man thats the one thing I miss about my iphone was real push notifications.
Is Beejive any good compared to this? I currently use Meebo, but would love to try another messenger that supports push in 2.2

No. It works. The icon in the notification bar is to remind you it's running and for easy access to the app. Don't mess with anything.
I wasted money on buying this app, just figured out, it was this draining my battery. about 6% an hour vs 1% with it off.

It's going to drain your battery having something polling for new messages if you aren't on Android 2.2 and have push enabled.
I was on 2.2 and now on 2.3, still drains regardless, push or not whatever...

[Q] Galaxy Tab APKs on i9000

Although my issue is specific to the Email.apk from the Galaxy Tab, I expect that if this is a real problem then we will experience it with other apps sooner or later.
For some reason the Galaxy Tab Email APK does not show properly on the i9000 screens. Important parts of the interface are cut off, rendering it virtually unusable. I don't expect that it is broken, just need to change settings somewhere and make it draw properly on our screen.
Some advice and direction would be greatly appreciated on going about this
There is a modded version of the TAB's email apk which works a charm on the SGS. You can find it here.

Hotmail is working for me ... I had to adjust settings and change it to an exchange server, but it works.
The main problem for me is not being able to see the bottom of the APK to hit refresh or confirm other menu selections.
I think you mean the "load more messages" thing? That is weird indeed. Could be a bug. But really this is not the right thread to bring it up, do it the one I linked to.
I appreciate the help but you would do well to read that thread first before recommending it, as well as understand my question before filing it away.
1. Not talking about "load more messages". It works sometimes and other times it doesn't typically when there is no saved data on it, it works fine. When there is any, it doesn't pull and gives the load more messages issue.
2. The APK works fine .. it just needs to be calibrated to our screen setting. This may be a problem singular to this APK but I don't know for sure. To cover all bases I'm trying to see if I can get my hands on the odex from the Tab so I can see if that is needed to make it work correctly.
Also this has more to do with debugging APKs than it does to do with this specific email client.
You could download a TAB firmware and get the needed files?
I'd need to install it on a Galaxy Tab (which I don't have) just to pull the odex :/

I couldn't get Firefox 4 to show up in the app market, but it seems to load fine as an apk. You can get it here:

Installed perfectly from the web market send to my gtab, which is exactly the opposite of how most of the other apps work for me.
I tried that, but the market doesn't see my gtab as a device to send to, unfortunately.

The graphics look horrible to me when I go to websites using FF4. I open the same site in Dolphin or the others the graphics on a website look decent, but in FF they look bad. I have not been able to find anything in the config that controls the compression or graphics.
I set up my gtab as a new device from my desktop (sync). I don't see my saved tabs in the tabs on my gtab. any ideas?
Good start for FireFox & I'm sure it will get better as time comes along, but for me I'll wait till it gets better.

Is the samsung messages widget missing?

Did anyone else notice the Samsung messages widget is missing from Galaxy Note 9? I use the built in messages app (not google's messages app, samsungs), and I used to have the widget on my home screen on my Note 8 that showed the messages window. Now I don't see a widget for it?
I don't have the phone with me so I can't check right now. I did notice you can't change the text background anymore and that kind of pisses me off. I don't like goSMS or Textra. I don't want a 3rd party app. It sucks they stick you with no options to change background or chat bubble colors.
Its just not there. They also removed a feature I used quite often on my S8: Bixby dictation by pressing and holding button while keyboard is open. It was super convenient.
I noticed it too... If you find anything, please let me know! I'll do the same!
