[Q] Do I really have to pay £20+ for a USB cable? - Streak 5 Accessories

Why hasn't anyone produced a cheaper alternative yet? I know it's not a common connector, but the phone has been out for a long time now. Any ideas? Thanks.

If you want one YES
I haven't found any third party ones yet

lol..well said.
i hate that phones/laptops use proprietary ****...
but i guess that's where the money is so its stupid not to from a business standpoint.
thats why I always like nokia and htc,,
they would make a top shelf unbranded universal device.
no bs chargers, or batteries, or no mem slot, internal battery etc...
they give you a completely unbranded, un tainted device that actuall does everything...
not the almost everything that these cell phone companies do..
they cant give you everything in one phone because then you will never buy the new one they are selling.
so all that considered the dell streak starts to look pretty damn good...
atleast until the HD3 is released.
I would never have bought this if my HD2 didnt suffer touch screen death.
had dual boot super tech wm 6.5.5 touch rom with froyo 2.2 bluetopia rolling.
It was best of both worlds..
made my nokia n97 seem like a toy.
now the Dell streak has done that even with the HD2..
Extremely impressed!
They call it a tablet but its really a giant cell phone.
they should get Brock Lesnar to endorce it...
it would look very proportional i bet..
so if any marketing vp's are reading this.. there you go...
And,...Brock if you're reading hook me up with some UFC tickets..lol

Not that HTC is any better with their USB headphones on some models like my Touch Pro2! And PDMI is not proprietary, but Dell jumped the gun. They should all just have stayed with Mini USB.

Due to the formatting that post was ridiculously hard to read as it just didn't flow.
I agree that paying £20+ for what is supposedly an open standard plug (PDMI) is a bit excessive however it's a sellers market when people are early adopters. In time we will find that the plugs will become available cheaper cables will be produced, I believe members on XDA-Developers have already sussed out the pin-out for the cable, they just need the plugs.
I have been trying to source some however as of yet haven't had any luck, second I find some I'll be making cables like they're going out of fashion.

You can get an adapter for the USB headset, but the one that works with a headset with microphone is quite expensive. Besides, it is a real pain, carrying it around, trying not to lose it, etc. And the strange thing about the Touch Pro2 is that sound through the speakers is much better than through headphones.

Really? Not if you steal one.... Lol
Second... Shouldn't that have been a question you asked yourself before you bought a $400 proprietary device?

Exactly, the Touch Pro2 has the best hardware keyboard around and music wasn't my first priority. So I got it and still use it as a business phone. Every device has some drawbacks, as mentioned by others, if they made them almost perfect, why would you think of upgrading early?

keep an eye out for the samsung galaxy tab aswell it uses pdmi connector so should work on the streak, you can also get tv out cable
Ignore above
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just read on mydellmini site someone has both the Streak &the Galaxy Tab. He states that no they do not work.
The question now is which is standard pdmi, Galaxy Tab or Dell Streak or are neither ?

The charger probably works, the cable it's a no no unless you change your streak port to fit an ibrick plug.

Hope he doesn't get flooded with requests...

Looks like someone may have found an alt source for cables. They expect a sample from their supplier next week and may be making a bulk order shortly there after - last I heard it was 3 cables, AC adaptor, car adaptor = $30.

No - that is NOT what I reported.
That USB charger does work with the Streak - but you need to use the Streak's USB cable to connect it.
The iPad has a completely different USB cable to the Streak ! The cord that comes with the car charger is to fit the iPad, not the Streak - so you can just throw it in the bin.

The picture showing the Dell Strea sync cable on the website linked above seems to indicate in its caption that the same cable could be used for a Zune HD (I say seems as I don't read Korean).
Would someone be able to verify that a Zune HD uses PDMI (and the same 30-pin connector) and so possibly ZUne cables may be an alternative?

Basically, it seems that firmware dictated how the usb cable charged. Rooted my 1.6, and flashed up to Stock 2.2 released by Dell for its unlocked units. I'm unsure if the earlier versions (2.1) would work too. Anyhow, no longer had any problems and could charge in my car just fine without overheating. Make sure whatever usb car charger you get, that the port has at least 1A of juice coming out. Good luck!

This is it right here http://www.expansys-usa.com/p.aspx?i=145166 or you can go on ebay and get the docking station I moded in this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2067979#post2067979
I think expansys has that docking station too and the OEM version which carries 2 USB ports and an already included 3.5mm jack, but I wouldn't shell out $100 plus for it. Just my 2 cents

4 in 1 cable gets you comppsite video out and VGA out if your TV has that port. I've tested it and it looks really good either way.
Excellent, where's the best place to buy? Expansys? Are there any generics I should avoid?

Since you are in the USA, go to OnTheGOSolutions.com They always seem to have them in stock and they get them out FAST. Prices are all about the same. Call them though, they aren't showing it on the web site at the moment. I don't think you'll find generics to worry about.
Why do youwant it on your TV anyway?

the main reason is because i have two daughters (one is two years old and the other is four months). At family events, everyone always wants to see pictures. Since i usually keep lots of pictures on my device or an sd card, i can show pictures from my device. its very annoying going from person to person, or passing my device around the room, hoping no one drops it or spills something on it. Showing everyone at once on the tv seems like the best solution.

Keep a set of S video or a/v cable in the car along with the 4 in 1 cable and a spare charger. I know exactly what you mean though, especially when it gets around to the kids hands. By the time it reaches back to you their are multiple windows open and the pictures cant even be seen anymore. Not to mention of the mistress calls while the inlaws have the phone in their hand (lol). Just ranting and talking bs, but do get 1 of those 4 in 1 cable or a docking station for the phone's sake.

Its nice to knw i'm not the only one with this issue. I can tell this cable is gonna be one of the 'must have' accessories for the advantage, for me anyway. Lg style i, nutshell belt clip pouch, good screen protector (i use boxwave crystal clear, as suggested in a different thread) are essential to this device, IMO. Of course, a good bluetooth headset may be suitable to replace the style i, depending on your prefernce. Personally, the only time i just love a headset is while driving. I keep the wired headset that came with the x7501 in the car. It works great, just plug it in and go. No need to turn on device, activate comm manager, turn on bluetooth, set as hadsfree, yo get the idea. I only use it while driving though, i just can't see walking through the mall (or anywhere else) with wires dangling from my head, not for me.

TV Out

Anyone know where to get the TV out cable?
Google 73H00274-00M
I believe that's the cable as it has the extra USB connector to charge the phone while it's outputting the video.
I think this si it. YOu may want to email the seller and confirm tho.. http://www.amazon.com/OEM-HTC-Out-Cable-ACT100/dp/B002OOZDSE
I think that cable is mini usb not micro
Correct that is mini not micro, cable will not work. But what about the combination of http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OOZDSE/ref=oss_product and
http://www.banggood.com/Wholesale-Micro-Male-To-Mini-Female-Usb-Converter-Adapter-Cable-p-11269.html
I think $20 bucks is worth the try.
That won't work either... the adapters only push through the standard pins, not the special pins used by HTC for their TV out...

one for each TV in the house
Seriously I need this... with the skyfire browser this will be the most useful cable ever. No more hooking up the laptop to watch last week's shows that I missed.
I have heard from wirefly that verizon wireless will give it out in a month..
But what I dont like is that there is no dedicated output port in incredible .. (ie its a matter of time when your phone will get discharged ).. So this thing will be useful only for quick preview on TV(like done for camera).
they could make a cable with an inline micro female to charge simultaneously
do not buy the ACT100 cable it does NOT work with the incredible. the slot is like the same as the HTC HD so it will not fit.

According to this video HTC explained that the TV-Out cable has an extra Micro USB port on it that allows the device to be charged while having the TV-Out cable connected as well. Really hope we get this cable in stores soon as I'd love to try this feature!
Correct you will be able to charge as its plugged in.
I just really hope that the dev who made the app to sync a Wii remote with Android comes up with the HTC fix. It would be so nice to have all of these game emulators on your phone that you can play with a Wii remote on your TV or anywhere there is an RCA connect.
Off-topic: There is a bluetooth controller that supposedly works with HTC Sense 2.1 devices I am considering purchasing, the MSI BGP100. I dont much care for it, but it supposedly works according to the dev website. It uses the app Gamepro on the market. Id much rather use the Zmote, but Ill probably just wait for Wiimote support on the Incredible.
On-topic: VZW warehouses dont even have them in stock. As in, they are still awaiting mass-production apparently. Fullfilment Inventory= 0. A few HTC events have had the cable being demoed but not for purchase. Good god how I long for one! Like many of you I have also scoured the interwebs for one with no success. Outside of bumping into a htc rep, looks like we might just have to hurry up and wait fellas.
Yea, just as everyone else i want one bad!!
It is not listed on their parts site yet either. Even though a lot of stuff there is back ordered.

Preparing Class Action Suit for B&N Nook Cables

Guys, I'm not a fan of lawsuits, but I think B&N knows for sure that their cables sucks, and they are doing nothing to fix it.
Changing the cables is not a real solution, cause after 12 months, a cable would probably break, and B&N would ask 15 dollars for a replacement.
So, I need a service agreement that we get at purchase of the NOOK COLOR/TOUCH, and when one purchases a cable/charger alone.
By the way, what do people think of a Class Action Suit on this?
Anyone?
I feel like b&n has treated me pretty well in regards to the cable. Replaced three at no charge. Plus the nook charges faster than any other mobile device I've ever had, with a pretty stout battery life.
And, in my opinion, class action suits are generally just lawyer-driven cash grabs. The lawyer sees an opportunity to file a suit, gathers up some likely plaintiffs and files. The company being sued either settles or it goes to court for a couple years. At the end of the day, the lawyers get their 30% and the people they represent end up with a check for $2.75 each.
I guess that's an okay return if all they want is your signature, but I would hate to see the advances b&n was attempting be discouraged in the future just so I could get a free McFlurry.
The cable isn't perfect, it breaks way too easily. They have handled that known problem satisfactorily to my mind.
Yeah, I know that CAS are mostly a lawyers thing.
But with this one, I want B&N to change their cables design/manufacturing.
No matter how many they change, as soon as it is broken, you are left with a powerless nook.
And there would be a moment where your 12 months warranty would expire, and you would have no more option than buy a new one, at a ridiculous high price.
It is a shame that they did not have a better design... I bought my nook color in Feb 11. The cable plastic split at the led "n" housing junction within a month. They sent a replacement that WAS better, but it too split, this time at the wall charger USB junction. Of course, now my warranty is up. My solution is not pretty, but it works - electrical tape from the hard plastic housing down the cable from both ends, layered enough to support the split cables. It's been two months now, and it works just fine...
Personally, I'm not sure this issue rises to the level of legal redress. They were pretty good about the initial replacement, and a warranty is term defined for a reason. The second cable lasted much longer than the first generation cable I received with the nook. I can only imagine that the nook tablet cable is better than the second generation cable I received as a replacement. And so it goes... my 1/2 cent worth.
Well, if you check B&N comments of buyers, it MUST be obvious to them they need to fix it.
And they are on their 3rd gen cables, and still the same sh*t.
This is the type of quality you can accept on a 5 bucks cable, not on a 15(!!!) dollars cable:

dub ya dub ya dub ya . cellphoneshop.net/usbdacaforsa95.html?CAWELAID=1316950185&gclid=COfup43S3a8CFaVdTAodl2guAQ
this one wont break because it doesn't have the pretty little led "N" on it. I guess the $2.75 from the lawsuit would pay for one of these, but wouldnt you die a little inside?
No. A standard USB cable would do a slow charge of a nook color.
You need a special cable, sold only, as far as i know, by B&N.
This has been documented befor on XDA.
And even if it was a simple cable, selling a defective by design is not something nice.
And again, I do not want money, I want B&N to improve their cable.

"slow charge" is very different from "left with a powerless nook". I charge mine fairly often overnight with a standard cable and it works fine just slower. I don't like the quality issues or the lack of improvement either, but I don't think you're helping your argument along by exaggerating.
I use my hp touchpads charger cable and the charge time difference is negligible.

It was just a way of expressing that you can be without power at any moment.
With such a terrible constructed cable, you need to have two on your bag.
But the main point is simpler and more obvious.
B&N is selling a defective by design product at a very expensive price, for at least two years, they known it, and they have done nothing to fix it.
If you feel B&N is doing fine, by selling you an overpriced, defective by design accesory, great, you do not need to be part of the CAS.
The cable sucks (very poor design) and class action also sucks. By the time it goes through they probably will have a redesign or a second party will be providing them.
I think it is a valid point that the sucky cable could leave you without power at any given time. Mine broke while traveling. The problem is that its fine until it isn't. It seems not to be a matter of if but when.
I do agree with yoi, I'm not a fan of any trial/suit either, but I also believe they need to learn.
They moved from Nook Color to Nook Table, and the same shi*y cable!
Well TBH, If I had this much grief from B&N I would just sell the NC and go for a kindle fire. I hear the KF's have superior durability.

Same here. The ONLY problem is the cable.
oh stop already. CAS only benefit lawyers. if you're so upset go to small claims court. i'm sure you'll either win the price of a cable, or if B&N's law firm decides to show up, they'll offer you a free cable in settlement. HAVE FUN!!!

M8 car mount/dock

Ok I know there is a lot of dock and mount out there that are universal, but I was looking for one that works perfectly for the M8.
The only dock that saw that looks really good, is the HTC dock, but I really don't want to pay the HTC price, so my question is, does anyone know of a dock or even just a mount that works as well as the HTC dock without having to pay the HTC price?

The only dock that saw that looks really good, is the HTC dock, but I really don't want to pay the HTC price, so my question is, does anyone know of a dock or even just a mount that works as well as the HTC dock without having to pay the HTC price?

Why not get something more universal to use with any phone or any case? You can check out my sig link, just scroll down to car mount reviews, I have a ton of those. Personally, I would highly recommend Arkon Mobile Grip 2 since it's the most minimalistic and can also be converted to attach to a picture tripod. Plus, it has one of the best sticky grip base.

Because I don't think the third party mounts automatically switch the device into Car Mode when connected.
Brodit. You buy a piece for your car and a piece for your phone, so when you switch cars, you buy a new piece for your new car, and when you switch phones you buy a new piece for your new phone.
They're not cheap, but they're built to take a beating and they work for years and years.
Plus, swedish design, yet no EFFING allen key.

Except that Brodit/ProClip hasn't made a dock for the M8 yet :/ I emailed them about it the release date of the phone and they replied that they should have them ready in about a month. I have always been happy with their products though so I guess I'll have to wait...

Don't know why they told you that, I already bought one from a webshop that had a picture of it. Granted it's not in stock, and probably won't be for a while, but they're clearly in production.

This was the email from March 26:
Thank you for contacting us and for your interest in ProClip products.
We are currently designing a holder for the HTC One (m8).
This design process generally takes between 4 and 6 weeks once the design team obtains the device, but can take longer depending on the device.
Once we have a custom holder available for your device we will send you an email with a link to the products.
It sounds like a very boilerplate response, so that must have been all the info he had at the time. My understanding is that ProClip is just Brodit's exclusive US and Canadian vendor.

This is exactly why I wanted a mount. I wanted it to auto which to docking mode.

I've never heard of this so I'll looking into this. Might be what I want assuming there is no screwing involved in mounting in the car and that it's not that expensive :fingers-crossed:

The clip that fits in the car usually has glue strips, but often combine that with some sort of slip-in-between-the-seams stuff as well. Then you do screw the holder onto the clip, but that's probably not what you meant.
As for expensive... Yes, it gets expensive, but it's very good quality, which is worth it to me at least.
Oh, and here are the products. None of them are in stores yet, though.

I have been using the same iBolt kit since my Galaxy S3. Since then I have used it on the Note 2, Galaxy S4, HTC One and my brand new M8. All worked great as I got the dock-launching plugs for both the Samsungs and the HTC. However I just discovered that if you use the long USB with audio cable designed for the sammy, it will charge the HTC (slowly) but won't launch the dock mode. Which is annoying. I had to pull my deck out to uninstall it, and replace it with a standard USB cable. Now it works like a champ! Though I do wish that HTC would do USB analog audio like Samsung. It made car-integration so much better (quality of sound wise) than over bluetooth.

They informed me too on 16th April per E-Mail. You can purchase it, but the delivery time is around 3-4 weeks. So you are both right.

You would think so, wouldn't you. But my active Brodit mount for a Nexus 4 had problems reliably making a power connection. The metal USB bit slipped down and away from the phone within its moulding.
Brodit could not supply spare parts!!.
I resorted to cutting the usb connector apart and using epoxy resin to put it back together again.
Got the HTC mount this time for my M8!
Repair parts? Couldn't they just ship you a new holder? Seems like a clear warranty issue. That is, if brodit has a warranty, I've never needed to find out, and in Norway our consumer laws are so strong warranty is almost never an issue.

How well does the suction? because one of the thing that i love about the htc mount is the way the suction is design. Does the suction only work on the glass or can it work on the dash as well?
I bought the iBolt xProDock Kit for HTC
I already had the iBolt for the One X+ (was specific for that one, the new one fits almost all htc phones) and it is perfect (now my wife uses it).
The suction works perfect and you can place it on the window screen or the dashboard. It also starts automaticaly the dock mode.y
I bought this a year ago for my GS4 and loved it: iMagnet. I wasn't sure the metal plate would work with the curved back of the M8, but I just bent it a little and it fits perfectly without scratching the device. I use Car Home Ultra and configured it to launch whenever my car's bluetooth connects to it. Works like a freaking charm
Anyone have the official dock yet? I know they're expensive but I'd still like to hear a review of them. Thanks

Are they even available? I'm looking at the page for it here and while it says it's available at best buy stores, it says unavailable wherever I put in my zip code. Can I only buy it online at the moment?
Your right it's showing as unavailable in my area also.

USB port seems ifffy?

I noticed pretty much right away that it is not a very pleasant experience plugging the device in, the cable doesn't fit super well and seems to take too much force, that mixed with the tear down and seeing that the port is on the same board as everything else worries me...

Because of that I am pretty sure I will be returning this phone tomorrow and picking up something else I can't have a non fixable device that already seems destined to break.
Although mine micro usb seems okay for now i find this interesting. Do you guys think that the usb is unfixable without replacing the board? I had usb issues with my old HTC Desire HD and nexus 4. It was really annoying and I don't want to experience this again.
If you're worried, you could get a Qi charger to avoid using the USB port every time you charge it. The only time I ever had a problem with the USB port was with the Diztronic case since it interferes with the plug on the USB cable. It would cause it to easily come unplugged. With my supcase there's no problem at all.
The cable that came with the phone is tight and has weird fit for me. Other cables have been fine. I use a Samsung cable with my turbocharger now otherwise my qi charger.
with wireless charging and wireless file transfers using a file Explorer app, I've not plugged the device up yet.
The cable and USB port on mine are fine. I'm used to the hard to plug in G3 so this is extremely easy in comparison. I've had my Nexus 6 since it was delivered on 11/17 and it was made on 10/21 so I would give yours a chance.
The port on my N4 got broken too after about 18 months. Because it was a separate board it was easy to replace. Maybe you can desolder it on the N6, but you need some skills for it. Or a good friend

Or just get an extended warranty which would cover it. If you get moto care you can get it replaced up to 3 times for user damage in 2 years.

Unfortunately I bought the phone from ATT not Motorola and as far as I have heard I cannot get moto care on it. Also ATT insurance is useless because by the time it breaks and I have so much invested into the phone I would still have to pay over 200 for the deductible.

I didn't purchase my Nexus 6 from Motorola, and I was able to purchase MotoCare online for it. $129 up front, and only $35 deductible, up to 3 claims.

I thought it was $39? I haven't looked at my moto care policy since I bought it but its a good deal.
Thank god I have JUMP from T-Mobile. Free manufacturer lifetime replacements!
That would be nice if I could...

When I go to the purchase Motorola care site the pull down options only has Nexus 6 (Purchases from motorola.com) as an option.
I love the way the USB clicks in place. Insert from an angle that is below the phone rather than straight on and it goes in easy peezy!

That's the same way that ALL microusb ports are.
Microusb is literally, the WORST plug configuration ever supplied. They are extremely fragile.
The good news is, that you don't need the microusb port for *anything*.
Its got wifi for transferring data.
It has a wireless charging coil.
