[Q] Please anyone help me with video playback on The Nexus one

I'm very disappointed with video playback on the N1. I thought it would handle video well, i mean this thing has 1ghz of processor after all.
Video player I've tried so far are arcMedia, mplayer, rockplayer, nemoplayer and of course the build in one. All of these does very bad job. They either don't have the codec to handle videos, playback but with grayish overlay, only sound and if the video is small, i can see pixel on the edges. Non of them can smooth smaller video.
My last 5-6 phones were all wm and with coreplayer installed wm can handle these vga or wvga video as if they were qvga. Plus, coreplayer can smooth out smaller video.
I really love the ui on N1 but if the video playback is this bad i may have to go HD2. So help me, I'm willing to try anyway anyway. thanks.
Oh I've googled for ways already with no luck and i know coreplayer is coming to android. I don't i want to wait. thanks again
Sorry for the long post. I've also kill every app and please don't tell me to convert all those video.

Always great to see fast fast replies. what are your file type? what resolution? Mine usually are mkv with 500 to 800p. any help? anybody?

I use VPlayer beta for playback + Handbrake for encoding (using stock iphone/ipad preset) and I get mostly good results. What bothers me is sometimes the phone will stutter and not play back but other times it plays the same video fine. I have mostly long concert videos (1-2 hrs created from a ts_video) and if it stutters and stalls I'll pause it for a minute then when I hit play the audio goes fine and the video will be in FF for 15 sec or so then sync up again. Sync is not great overall but I'm not going to worry about it.

VPlayer beta works for me .... could you be running too many widgets or not killing enough programs in the background?

Come one people could you not see the tears next to my question? How about paid app then? Is there any good one?

I was using Rock Player until I read about VPlayer Beta over here and installed it. Personally, I felt that VPlayer Beta is more feature rich and configurable then the Rock Player

if you're trying to get a decent picture from a smaller sized video, it's going to suck. i usually rip dvd's with mencoder or handbrake, transcode to mp4 @ 800x480 (or whatever) and all the dvd's play back beautifully. sound is great (with passive cancelling earbuds) and the isn't a shimmy even when a phone call/sms/gmail interrupts with a notification sound.
maybe you have something heavy running in the bg ? sync messed ? dunno

[Q] Best Video Player is?

Been trying to find a good video player...all seem to lag quite a bit or are quite choppy...anyone have any luck with any working really good? If so, please share!

I like rockplayer. Used it for a bit on the plane yesterday.

Is there a certain resolution you encoding videos too or will rock player handle anything?

i have an android phone and I use both rockplayer and mvideoplayer. rockplayer handles avi files well but not mkv files. mvideoplayer handles both.
i don't have a nook color but I would assume if you have a rooted nook(and have access to market) you could get these players and they should work since the processing seems the same.
i'm interested in a rooted nook color but can't seem to find if anyone has actually tried these apps.

rockplayer on the nook can handle 480p non hd videos fine in the mkv or avi containers. anything higher than that and you start to get audio and video seperation because the proc cant keep the video going at the propper pace

im using mplayer on mine right now and watching some mp4 videos, not an hd file ... but the proper ratio and it looks killer ... totally worth 250 bucks

I use Vplayer beta and i strongly recomend it. it plays most videos well and only lags a bit when you get to real high quality videos

i bought a nook color and tried it out...so far video playback is not that great.
mvideo player seems to have a very slight audio lag when i played a standard avi file(not converted or optimized for nook color) and no mkv files work on any of the players.
i think this has something to do with the internal videoplayer itself and not really the actually processing power of the nookcolor.
looks like i will have to just convert files to mp4...an extra step but I read more than watch videos.

If you are using anything other than an mp4 file extension then you're using software decoding. Software decoding will only go as smoothly as the CPU allows. I've found when using software decoding I can handle AVIs up to standard def in Rockplayer. (480) I get a tiny bit of stutter at the start, but it smooths out within 60 seconds.
However, if you use hardware decoding, (only works with mp4 files) you can probably push the resolution up a bit. I have a 720x400 file at a video bitrate of 800 that plays instantly and smoothly in the native player and in Rockplayer. I plan to go home and push the resolution a bit further and see where it starts to desync, so once I do I'll report back.
tl;dr: Anything other than mp4 has to be standard def or lower and played in a 3rd party player that can do software decoding, like Rockplayer. Anything in mp4 can be played in anything that does hardware decoding, and can probably go quite a bit higher than SD.

Video playbacks on nook color?

Hi guys, I have searched about the video playback capability of nook color.
I found information that has been posted since december but i am not sure if there are any changes since then. Can nook color play avi and m4v now? without the conversion?
And is adobe flash available for it right now as its already on 2.2?
I seems like I can't get information about it and all i got was about the flashing of nook color. and videos of nook color.
please enlighten me. i am currently so tempted to buy nook color.

Currently video playback is very limited, and hardly any formats are supported. As for flash, it is supported somewhat on the Froyo 2.2 builds for the Nook Color, however, it is still recommended that you run those from the sdcard as the EMMC builds are still highly unstable. With the current progression on Stock, Froyo, and even Honeycomb, we can only guess that flash and video support is right around the corner, especially once A3.0 becomes AOSP.

I use radtools or mcebuddy for batch conversion to vanilla mp4. Works great

I use handbrake (free) to transcode movies to mp4 which plays beautifully on the nook
Alsos use mVideoPlayer which also supports import of subtitle files

i tried to get a nook color through a online store.
But: its out of stock everywhere: b&n, bestbuy, wallmart, booksamillion. even if they say that its in stock, it wont be until the 15.2.

Yeah, be careful with the online inventory counts from Bestbuy and Walmart. Sometimes they say they have units on hand and they don't. I've even heard about people calling into Barnes & Noble and the "kids" that work there said they had several and it turns out they were sold out for days.

guys, try this : VitalPlayer. It's free and it's the best one I've ever had in the market.
It can play avi, mkv,wmv,mp4 as such, the best thing is: its software decoding is SOOOOOOO good. If you just play some videos not in HD resolution, this tool can give you almost no lag, no sound delay experience.
Try it and you'll like it just like me.

Handbrake, without a doubt the easiest and best quality IMO.
I too have tried other video players and have seen audio sync issues with them. Using the built in gallery app on my stock rooted nook though video playback is perfect. I have bluray rips of a few select faves for my son on my nook, specifically coded at 854 pixels wide with constant quality set to 20 and they look fantastic on the nook's standard video player but skip and drop frames on vplayer or rock player regardless of what kernel I run (stock 800mhz or overclocked). I haven't tried playback using vplayer or rock in Nookie Froyo yet, maybe I'll try that tonight.

Same here - I have had no luck with any of the other media players.

Did you try your AVI in your PC? A lot of times, the video file itself may be out-of-sync. In that case, no matter how you convert it, it won't work.

The AVI files play fine on my Archos 70 using RockPlayer.

Played around a little more last night and confirmed that for me playback of my mp4 h.264 videos encoded to meet nook specs play flawlessly in the standard player in eclair and the nookie froyo 0.68 image. Playback in vplayer or rockplayer suffers audio sync issues due to dropped frames though I noted that playback of video in vplayer in froyo was much better than in eclair.
I'm really wondering how it is people are getting flawless playback in vplayer. I expected to see it in froyo seeing as I was using a clean SD card boot image (latest distro) .
Its not a huge deal for me since the stock video player plays well but it does mean having to re-encode my fave TV shows from xvid avi to h.264 mp4 before loading them onto the nook.

The Nook Gallery seems to be the only thing that will playback videos without a video/audio sync problem. I use VideoReo to re-encode my videos into a h.264 format for Android phones. They look great on the Nook. VideoRedo is pretty expensive (I use it for converting .tivo videos) but it is a Cadillac. Handbrake is supposed to be a good free alternative.
Is there any way to get the stock Google Gallery app from Eclair onto a V1.1 rooted Nook?

I'm running brianf21's 0.6.7 Nookie 2.2 image off of the SD card. Flash wasn't working in browser so I uninstalled Flash 10.1 in the market, rebooted, and re-installed.
Embedded youtube videos now working in the browser.
From his thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922324) the only thing I could see was reported success with 0.5.9 so hope this is helpful.

What is the current status of video capabilities with rooted CN, esp 720p?

With all the new roms forcolor nook out what is the status of its ability of playing videos, especially 720 mp4 and mkvs downloaded from the internet without having to reencode the files?
Which rom/player combination is best for this?

I'd like to know also. Currently using Rockplayer on HC from the EMMC, and videos from my camera shot at 640x 480 and esp 848x480 are quite slow and jerky. Definitely not something to show someone else.
Anyone have recommendations?

DSP/HW accel is not working in all non-stock roms and is being worked on, but even in the stock rooted, I doubt it plays 720p well enough, unless it's been encoded into an mp4 or something that's natively supported.

That is not true. Hardware decoding works in Froyo, just not in CM7 or HC.
It is true that files need be rencoding in compliant MP4 files for them to work. You need a dual core tablet for downloaded mkv support.

My bad - I only tried nookie froyo on the SD and used it for less than 10 minutes.

I can't get hardware to work in Froyo on either Vital player or Rock Player. Anyone getting hardware decoding to work on Froyo?
How are you doing it?

no hardware accceleration on nookie froyo either for me. Able to play 720p AVI smoothly by using vital player neon on software decoding.

If working hardware decoding means that mp4 can be played with standart Movies application, than yes, it works for me in Nookie Froyo on eMMC.

Sounds like Nookie Froyo is the one to get (for now) if you want h/w acceleration for video.

I've been trying to get high quality video to run on my 2.1 NC for a few days and can't seem to get the audio to match up with the video. mp4 video, 800x480, 1200 bitrate, 25 gps looks great but the sound is off. Pissed.

That bitrate is slightly too high.

I tried all the video players I could grab from the market with my rooted NC.
Rockplayer actually doesn't seem to be very good. It lagged at times. I'm not sure it's using full hardware acceleration, or maybe it's not able to fully use or is not recognizing the NC's hardware acceleration.
The best player for getting finicky files to work was vPlayer. It has a "high quality" mode which I'm guessing supplements the hardware acceleration with software decoding to make up for features which the hardware doesn't support. It was able to play video files that the stock video player and others refused to play. I think it was playing them slower than full speed though - was hard to tell with the video samples I used.
It is a pay app with a free trial. When not in "high quality" mode, it would still play the finicky video files, but with visible errors in the decoding. A couple of the other players also did this. I guess instead of refusing to play, they just throw the file at the hardware and display whatever comes out. But vPlayer was the only one with an option to "fix" the errors. If you're not encoding your own videos, definitely give this one a shot.
I'm using mVideoPlayer for now. It's limited to the same file formats the stock player can play, but I really like the interface (swipe to seek forward/back, long-press in corners to adjust volume/brightness). And it automatically generates lists of videos from a customizable directory list. No more having to search through a file browser - my videos on both the emmc and microsd now show up in one big list.
The main problem is you need a back button to use it. If you don't hit back to stop playing a file, the next time you try to play any video file, it resumes playing the old file where you left off. But if you use softkeys to give you a back button, it puts an ugly circle on top of your video...

Not really true. My Samsung galaxy plays 720p mkv's without issues. That's a single core phone.
I think in reaility we just have to wait for hardware decoding to be ported over.

really hope dev can get h/w acceleration going for custom rom, especially cm7. On related issue, my NC with cm7 can play flash video and frame rate is low though (looks like slide show with 360P video).

Not NC related (haven't rooted yet), but having just played with (thanks to this thread) vPlayer, I can say it is definitely the superior program. My EVO handled a 720p .mkv file that rockplayer gave 6-10fps on, it was watchable and had no sync issues besides the occasional slow-down.

I believe hardware decode works on Android 2.1 Auto Nooter 3.0. I have that installed and it works in rock player and vital player.
One thing to note is the hardware decoder can only decode a max width of 854. So your 720p files will not work with hardware encoding. You will have to re-encode the files.

I'd have to go with MoboPlayer. Much better UI than Rockplayer, and doesn't seem near as choppy. Plus you can have a library type setup too. Check it out, it's free on the market. Also, when I downloaded the one from the market, it had me download an older version when I loaded it up for the first time. The older version actually worked better for me.

I like mVideo player. It runs very smooth on the G tab and it does have a library system with the ability for you to download cover art.

I like this player too but for some reason my avi files and mkvs sound seems a little low. I've raised the volume to Max and its still a little faint. Mp3s sound fine and plenty loud, I've got the volume app and tried raising the sound there but little difference...any suggestions?

Is there anything out there that plays 720p or 1080p videos? I have tried rockplayer universal, moboplayer, mvideo and all of them were choppy.

Its because your running a gingerbread rom it doesnt have hardware acceleration !

I run Vegan 1.5.1 and 720 p is choppy in every player (and audio is hit or miss).
Is there some way to run those well in pre-gingerbread?

It depends on the file and how it's encoded. I've got a bunch of recorded TV that I've compressed to 720P mp4 files for my HTPC. They run about 1 Gig/hour. The only combination I've found that plays them on the GTab is the Calkulin+Clemsyn combo with Mobo Player. Even then I sometimes have audio sync issues. I'm sure I could transcode them on a different setting and get better playback, but that's where I am right now.

So is there a ROM that runs 720 and 1080 videos with hw acceleration ?

Guys, use the hardware encoder and make sure your video file is MP4 H.264 - I said this because I spent 1 weeks just for trying to get better player and turns out ---> It's all about hardware encoding/acceleration.
I'm currently using QQPlayer & VitalPlayer (both free version) and all my videos are 720x480 MP4 H.264 (this give me a good size of file 1.2GB each movie)..AND MAKE SURE YOUR PLAYER USING HARDWARE ENCODING rather using software encoding!
Video converter software that I've been using (IMO) - very low CPU usage, 12hr for 10 DVD movie conversion in MP4 H.264 720x480 with subtitles is WonderShare Video Converter Ultimate - pretty good converter and average CPU usage (all 4 core 3.3ghz) is 15% - repeat 15% all cores' CPU usage....
Tried another such Cyberlink Media Espresso, Movavi converter - LOL they are all running 100% CPU utilization

I found a new player I am trying out. arcMediaPro can be found on the Market. It has some great configurations but it too struggles with some HD movies. I use my GTab as a video player to hand my drivers to review their practice session as they get out of the race car. Just grab the microSD from the camera and put it in the GTab and launch the video and hand them the GTab. I do notice the audio has some syncing issues on some recordings but I am still going through the settings which are more complex than any of the other video players I have found. I downloaded MoboPlayer and it is working good. I do have the volume softness issue though. Any fix for this?
