[REQ] Galaxy S skin for Swype - Nexus S Themes and Apps

I know the Nexus S isn't out yet, and this might require rooting, but the first thing I will do when I get my Nexus S next week is install Swype. I'm signed up for the Swype Beta so installing it won't be a problem. Unfortunately, I find the default skin for Swype hideous and I'd much rather have the Swype keyboad skin from the Galaxy S line, which uses a custom Samsung skin.

Is it confirmed that the current version of swype works on gingerbread?

yes it does

Swype Beta works, the Galaxy S apk does not

I'm the Sr. QA Engineer for Swype and I just came back from BB with several NSs so that we can make sure Swype is fully usable on Gingerbread. I just personally verified it with an internal build, and current <2.3 builds of Swype do work on the Nexus S, so it should work for those on the beta as well. In the next few days, we're going to completely evaluate what changes in 2.3 mean for us.
As for wanting a different keyboard look, it is something we are considering. I couldn't tell you if or when that sort of customization might be available, but your request has been noted.

Thanks, I think the Samsung skin looks more like Gingerbread's stock keyboard, and the Swype default skin just looks...yeah.

What did you figure out exactly?
On my Vibrant, I was able to use any number of MetaMorph themes, but it appears that this install of Swype on my NS does not place the Swype.apk in /system/app/ as required by the themes I have.
Any suggestions? Is it as easy as editing the .xml file used in the MetaMorph theme?

I found a MetaMorph theme too, but it doesn't work in 2.3, Swype hides itself or something. So I found I working Samsung themed apk, but make sure you uninstall all other versions of Swype.
MOD EDIT: Swype apks not allowed

nice.. at least something will look the same as the good old SGS

I am using the Swype Beta on my NS and it works fine.
On the full version, I found an input for Simplified Chinese which is totally useless because I use ChangJei (Common for Hong Kong and Taiwan).

I'm not aware of anything that we could be doing to cause this. I'd be curious to know why MM isn't working with Swype on 2.3. Obviously this is an untested scenario for us. PM me details and I'll take a look if I can.

rashad1 said:
Basically MM looks for the swype file in system apps, then doesn't find it. I assume it's located some where else in newer versions.
Here's the MM theme:

The apk is in data/app. Thanks for the upload. You don't need metamorph to apply this theme. Just use WinRAR or something and replace the files inside the apk with the ones of the metamorph zip and vwallah.

hahaha, no problem

When I restarted my phone, Swype continually crashed. Couldn't even open it.

As was already mentioned, this is because the Swype beta .apk is installed as a user application in /data/app and on a shipping device it is usually in /system/app. The MM that you've provided is specific to the shipping version of Swype in the Galaxy S line of devices, where the .apk is in /system/app.

The mod seems to crash Swype after restarting anyway

Hey there-- I found this thread as I was searching for a Samsung/Gingerbread keyboard skin for Swype as well. I love everything about Swype other than the keyboard- conversely, I hate everything about the stock keyboard other than the aesthetic.
I was wondering if at all possible I could get this .zip of the mod for my Nexus S without having to root my phone in order to use Metamorph?

Wow thank you so much man, I love using apps/mods that receive such a personal level of support! I'd definitely buy Swype when it comes out of beta for my wife and myself! Thanks again man!

I noticed that also, has to be in the orginal source that I used to build the theme from. All fles related to that tab are out of line. I haven't got to the advance stage of knowing how to edit the xml files that control the position of the png's used in the theme. I'm new to the darkside of Droid, the Epic is my 1st Android phone so I'm playing the game of catchup from the

ya really! well, I don't know which xml controls what either-- I did try grabbing (from Blue Minimalism Dialer) the Call_Contacts_Icon.xml from system\app\DialerTabActivity.apk\res\drawable-hdpi\
and replacing it in your zip, but it didn't seem to have an affect-- that I've seen at least. Raiderep would prob be a good person to ask.

Yes, flash the zip in clockworkmod. RAR files is a beautiful widget data file. TW2.5 is an apk file and can be installed the normal way after removing any previous TW2.5 already installed by using SDX App Remover.

Wow nice theme even better is this version of touchwiz is a version you can customize the apps on the menubar I had a tough time getting it to install on the Heroic Epic rom I ended up just tweaking the rom's zip file and adding in the theme to it and deleting the touchwiz launcher that was stock on the rom and added in your touchwiz.I tried to use the sdx removel tool but when i installed your tw all it did was force close.
Is there a blue glass background I may be able to get with this or how do u go about making something "glass" like

There are 4 different launcer apps available for the Epic. Which one you like or use is up to you. I favor the ADW Launcher because of so many themes already available. I am working on a theme for ADW, but not finished yet.

What do you want to have a glass effect? I have several different glass overlays you can use if you edit the png's in the apk file and then know how to re-sign the file before install.

Well that would be cool if I knew how to or Found a tutorial for what u just said
What I was referring to however was just to set it as a plain background so that it blends with the top task bar you know what I mean? Or if you could tell me what terms to search (did google some but kept getting more images of actual glass then not) maybe there's a way I can make a glass background. Is it possible to take just a reggular image and make it glass-like?
I wanted to post a pic of current wallpaper I use but can't cuz I'm new. Its basically a navy blue like background though just kinda dull and if I could glass/gloss that over I think may be cool.

That is my aim with unity, to bring software and hardware together. In the case of the Nexus S, it is a very nice black and the SAMOLED screen has some of the best blacks I've ever seen. Because of this, I am trying to use dark colours where appropriate to help seamlessly blend the screen with the surrounding hardware.
This is a work in progress, I'm just getting it ready now instead of posting separate threads everywhere for separate apks etc. Feel free to incorporate anything from my theme into any ROMs etc, as long as I am mentioned in the credits.

Notes
[CM7 Based ROMs] If you are having troubles actually seeing the changes after successfully applying the theme, make sure you are using the System theme in Theme Chooser.
[General] If you are having issues, check and see if you are using the correct download version for your ROM, also try checking the MD5 sum to see if you need to download a new copy.
[General] The screenshots are from my CM7 installation, if you are on stock, you will not have the toggles up the top. This is a CM7 feature, not part of my theme.
[Stock/MoDaCo/Axura] As of 1.2.0/1.2.1 you will not have a H icon when using HSDPA, as it is based on stock. This will be added in the next release, don't fret
Enjoy! As always, feedback is appreciated, and I will try to fix any issues that arise. If you enjoy my work, you can always Donate or hit the 'Thanks' button.

1.0.1 is up, all I have done for this is to merge the CM7 and Stock versions together, to make everything simpler. If anyone has any issues with it (specifically on a stock ROM/Axura) please let me know. I have tested it with GBCollab 1.08 (CM7 based) and it works fine so I assume there won't be any problems.
I am currently working on SystemUI, framework-res and GoogleQuickSearchBox for future versions, if you would like others to be added to the 'future' list, just let me know.
Updates may be a bit slow until next weekend, please bear that in mind.
I like the simple and sleek look you've got going.
1.1.0 is up, contains a partially themed SystemUI.apk. Could someone running either stock, MoDaCo or Axura please test it out and report back on their experiences? It works perfectly for me on CM7.
Thanks, and enjoy

Yeah, lol, I know, but the idea of 'hardware and software embracing each other' is kinda gone that way. How well the blacks look on SC-LCD, they just won't blend the screen with the surrounding hardware.

[THEME] BoxyBlue v1.2 (Updated 5/6/11)

Here is a theme I've been working on for the last few weeks or so. It's built over top of the Paragon rc6 Blue Theme that was originally made by eSPyeL and then themed blue by Bentonhall. Nearly everything in the notification bar and dropdown are completely originaly work by myself. It also features a new bootanimation that I put together.
I assume this would work with other ROMs (Paragon rc6 is JS3 based). If you try it on something else, please let me know if it works or not. I can also work on ports if there's interest.
My main hope was to make something somewhat different than other themes (so it didn't look like a copy) and to make all indicators very obvious (boxy). I wanted something simple and clean looking but still be visually appealing. I personally liked it, so I now share it with you. Hope you enjoy!!!
If anyone has suggestions for later versions (colors or variations on icons), let me know. I don't intend to theme any apps (I'll leave those to the actually good themers ). I hope to later release a "Rectangular Red", "Orthogonal Orange", and "Gerpendicular Green" (if someone's got some better names, I'm open to suggestions ). Let me know what colors you'd want first and I'll try to satisfy the masses (assuming there's more than just me interested in this theme!).
Changes:
1.1 to 1.2
Newer dropdown button icons (cleaner)
Black notification bar
New pulldown menu bottom
Updated themed dialer
Themed Settings.apk
Updated Go Launcher Theme (v2.1)
1.0 to 1.1
Themed unlock screens
Newer dropdown button icons
Removed text under dropdown buttons
Themed dialer
Several tweaks to the notification icons
Go Launcher Theme (Made some icon backgrounds--5 random colors--see screen shots. You need to have Go Launcher Ex for this to work.)
Future Changes?
Themed Contacts
Boxy Blue Theme v1.2
Screen Shots in the second post!
Thanks goes to:

Thanks! I figured "more options" is one of the main reasons to like android and xda. I'm glad I can contribute.
Theme update
Due to the lack of responses to this theme, I've tried to spruce it up! I've re-done a lot and added some more elements.
Please take a look and I'd love some feedback (again, please be gentle since this is still a work in progress and the continuation of my first attempt at a theme)!
For those who care, I just posted an update to the theme. There's a good chance I'll move to a different ROM since Paragon is stagnant. Perhaps I'll get with the times and try out one of those new fangled gingerbread ROMs.
Again, comments would be very welcome to let me know what I've done right/wrong. I still plan to theme whatever ROM I use (at least for my personal enjoyment), so I'd like to know what others think.
I just tried downloading the update, I couldnt get the link to work. Could be my browsers. I did try on a few and nothing. Awesome to hear its updated, that was quick and ill be sure to test it out if I can get it downloaded. I to will be movin on as other roms arise. But ill always find my way back to Paragon some how, hope for an update in the future.

I just tried the link and it's acting a little goofy for me as well. I'll repost a new multiupload link here in a sec.
On another note, I've been on CM7 the last few days and have enjoyed it. I would like to try to make a theme for that. We'll see if CM7 feels as stable as Paragon has been .
Alright, try the link now.
Very nice! It's good to see more options out there so we can dress up our cappys.
Alright I got it, will be testing it out soon. I just know it will be good.

Will there be a port to GB?
The theme looks great, am wondering if there will be a port to GB and CWM 3.0?

I could work on one. Which GB ROM are you using? It might take a little while, but I'll get it done. I want to try my hand at a CM7 theme, but since they use the theme changer, they're a bit different (anyone have experience making a CM7 theme apk?).
Also, if you like the theme, would you mind bumping up the thread rating? It seems someone hit it with a 2 star rating without leaving any sort of comment why. It can be a little discouraging.

What's up CapnPez, hey I use CM7 and just wanted to pass on that there are also themes that are in zip format and can be flashed from CWM3. While the theme Chooser is pretty sweet, there are other flashable themes as well. Just wanted to pass it on!

Thanks, that's cool to know. Do you know if there are any limitations to the theme chooser (things that can be done through flashing a zip but can't be done with the chooser)?
I'm also assuming that a flashable zip theme from another GB rom would be incompatible with cm7, right? (so making a zip cm7 theme wouldn't help for making one that would work with, say, gr-12 or something?) I'd like to make a chooser theme apk because the huge convenience when using cm7.
I'm still learning with the newer stuff (not that I'm a master of the froyo stuff), so I might need to spend some time on the q & a section .

I'm not sure. I know the developer of the matted blues theme wont make an apk version for theme Chooser..and I'm not positive but I think it has something to do with the updates and compatibility. And yeah your right, you could probably get away with a Ginger theme for JVB because a lot of gingerbread ROMs use that..however, CM7 is completely different and would probably need a different script or whatever.

Coincidently, I was just looking at the matted blues theme. I do notice the constant need to update with each of the nightlies. I wonder why that is. You think Thnikk would mind me picking his brain about that?

[APP] Swype from JVB

Can someone try flashing this for me? It's what I used to get it working on CM7 so I would hope that it would work for everyone on cm7/miui/sense. It's just swype beta w/ the jvb keyboard, so it SHOULD work. I hope. Maybe not. I might post a screenshot.
EDIT: Ok, I know what I did. You have to install beta, delete JUST the swype app in your /data/apps (NOT uninstall), and then flash it.

Works great. Thanks for posting. So much better looking than the default Swype theme.
hmm.. doesn't seem to work for me. i didn't have Swype in my /data folder. I flashed it and they keyboard works, just the swype functionality doesn't.
Did you have the beta installed?

I am liking the look of this swype. will it work on JVH? specifically continuum 5.4?
I have been having a tough time finding themed swypes for gingerbread.

Did you want the layout that is the same as the screenshot above, or the one that came with Continuum.
The screenshot is the same layout as version 2.29, which is what you get on Continuum when you sign up for Swype Beta, and the voice recognition works.
The Swype that is included in Continuum is 2.70, and has a different keyboard layout, and the voice does not work. FYI -- I'm currently working (slowly) on theming that one, with a Precision ROM look. That should be done by the end of this week if not earlier.
I currently have the 2.29 layout in MattedBlues that I did for a buddy on Apex 6.x. I tried to push that to Continuum, but it didn't work (maybe because of different build.prop or something --- not an expert when it comes to that), so I'll have to check later to see if I can push the themed images to the Swype Beta version and see if that works. I should know by the end of the day.
I wasn't aware the layouts were different. I would probably try to use the version with working voice input. I appreciate the response and look forward to hearing about trying it out on continuum.
Also I would consider checking out Apex if it is a comparable rom to continuum and I could get the keyboard I wanted.

I haven't driven Apex 6.1 myself yet, but it is JVB base vs. Continuum 5.4.1 JVH base, which is supposed to be less buggy.
Watsaa, the dev for Apex, is cool, but he has been tending to other things in his life and hasn't been around for a few weeks. Hope he comes back soon.
Here's a screenshot of the MattedBlues I did for my buddy, complete with the font of his choosing.
The look may not be for everybody, as I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I tried to take the Swype Beta that loaded for me on Continuum last night (version 2.29) and pushed the keyboard layout into it. However, when I pushed the Swype apk back to the phone it wouldn't work.
Does anyone know how to take the Swype Beta apk and have it working like it does on custom ROMs --- ie where you can just push the separate apk and lib files to the respective folders? I tried this and didn't work, so am seeking expert help.
I think I could get my Apex 6.1 Swype to wor on Continuum if I just changed the build prop, but then I would not see other things in the market, etc.
However, I can confirm that my Swype does work on the latest Mosaiic III release.
PM me if you want that one.
Otherwise, I'm theming the Swype 2.70 version just because I'm a little crazy.

Almost done with it, hopefully by tonight or tomorrow as I am experimenting a bit with the pop up word choice window.
I do plan on doing the same look for each of the compatible Continuum themes as I keep hopping from one look to the next...if I'm not burned out from my day job. It will only be QWERTY layout for now...
when you say "only qwerty" does that mean no voice input? I noticed it isn't in the screenshot you posted.

The Swype version that I am theming is 2.70, which is what Cezar included in Continuum. You can see the microphone, but voice input has never worked. I hope that gets solved soon.
To get voice, you need to somehow get version 2.29 working on it by signing up for the beta, but you lose the theming, or maybe change the build prop so that it works on Continuum (just a guess as I am not an expert at that).
When I referred to QWERTY, I meant for the key layout.

I'm signed up for the beta, so this is probably what I'll do. if I decompile the .apks, how hard is it for me to move this theme to the voice-enabled version?

Do you mean get version 2.29 working on Continuum? I tried to decompile/recompile the beta version and push my theme into it, but when I loaded it back, it said that it was built for another device.
If you could get a separate 2.29 swype apk and lib file working on Continuum 5.4.1, let me know how you did it.

I doubt I will have more luck than you, but I will give it a shot. also- what about the file in the OP? will that not work on a JVH rom?
I won't be flashing gingerbread until BLN is brought into talon kernel, so it may be awhile but I'll let you know if I have any success.

How to Modify the Google Search Widget?

I'm new to android, and I'm trying to learn how to theme. I've got some of the basics down, but I'm still a little overwhelmed as to what tools are best to use for modifying which items.
Currently, I am running a CM7 ROM on a Samsung Vibrant. I'd like to theme the google search widget. What's the best way to go about doing this? Is this something that can be done with Metamorph? What about Theme Chooser? Does something like Zipthemer come into play with what I'm trying to do?
This seems like it should be a relatively simple thing to do, but I haven't been able to make it work. I'm able to modify other widgets like the music player, but I can't seem to get this google search widget to change.
I'd really appreciate any and all help with this. Thanks in advance!
I haven't been able to get it to work through metamorph, so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just not possible through that method. Any help with this?
Could try using apkmanager?
What exactly is it your wanting to do to it?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
As I understand it, apkmanager is used to modify then repackage an existing apk file. Is that accurate? If so, I don't think that will work for me since I can't re-install google search (the package won't re-install over the existing application and there's no uninstall option).
As to what I'm trying to do....right now I'm just trying to make ANY change to the google search widget. I am really using this as a learning tool, so the specific changes don't matter, I just want to learn how to do it.

Instead of trying to install normally, you can just drop the apk in /system/app. Using Root Explorer, you may want to back up the original Google Search apk. On my phone it's named "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk", yours may be named differently. Either move the original to your SD card or replace the apk extension with .bak then move the new one. You'll need to mount system as r/w, in Root Explorer the button is near the top. The modded version has to have the same name as the original, so copy the apk to /system/app and rename it if necessary. Long-press on the apk and select permissions. Set the permissions to rw-r--r-- (owner = read, write checked; group = read checked; other = read checked).
Then reboot and you should be good.
Root Explorer is a paid app, but an indispensable tool if you're going to be modding system files. It's also a great file explorer, and well worth the money. However, if you don't want to pay, ES File Explorer is free and has a root level file explorer - you have to enable root access in settings. I'm not sure how to mount r/w with ES, but there are other free apps that will do so if the option isn't built in.

Hi,
Since ur on cm 7 rom look and learn how to create themes and mod n install themes over stock system application without all the troubles.
Otherwise when u mod any system apk, application signature will change and updates from market will not even install over different signature application.
Alternative is to mod application and install via xrecovery package. With stock signature. This is little tech but not a big deal too.
I suggest theme option that's why cm7 came with theme option to mod apps.
Cheers
Thanks plainjane, I can try replacing the package as a last resort, but I'm hoping to find a cleaner way to do it.
Shiwantha, so I can use Theme Choser for this? That's what I was originally trying to use, but I couldn't get it to work. As long as I know that it's possible, I at least know what to focus on.
Thanks to all for the responses!

Hi, it can be done in theme chooser, I have done it
I made my theme chooser app with a great guide found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964391 and a lot of patience...
I did find it a bit annoying, as the ROM im using came with two seach widgets, GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk and QuickSearchBox.apk ... So when I tried editing the widget (with theme chooser) it wasnt the right one! So maybe try both if you have both!
Any how, yes it is possible... Theme chooser may be the easiest way. It is possible with ApkTool/ApkManager. Apk Manager might help as it can push the app to /system via adb, and Apk Manager lets you keep the signature if it is a system app, but it may also corrupt it...
Hope this helps you, Matt

So in case anybody was wondering, I think I see what the problem is...both apktool and apk manager don't seem to be decompiling/recompiling properly. I didn't notice with apktool, but apk manager gives me errors when I try to decompile.
I'm guessing it's because I have to reference something from my samsung device in order to decompile properly, but I'm not sure what.
The best mod that you can make for the google search widget is to delete it! Your phone has a search button for a reason! Why do you want to waste your home screen space? No, really, I really am curious... Flame away and prove me wrong, please lol
