[Q] Develop HD video call Gingerbread - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Someone are thinking of developing the video call that can use the camera on the back of Android devices?
you find Hardware on ciccaresedesign.com

Edit: I get it now. Interesting concept, not very practical...What are you supposed to do, carry that thing in your pocket or something?

Thats pretty clever. If video chat becomes important to me, i wouldn't be opposed to carrying that around with me.

Replacing iPhone for Tilt

Should I?
I just bought the iPhone a couple of days ago, and I am kind of disappointed. It lacks too many things to list. I know that sdk is supposed to be released in February, but I just don't think it can compare to the Tilt.
I will be using the phone to watch movies on, as I work nights, and that will help, so does the Tilt handle movies as well as the iPhone? I am not concerned with the slightly smaller screen size.
Since the Tilt is basically a mini computer, I know the abilities are endless, I am fairly decent in getting around a pc, plus the internet is a great help, but how hard is it to get rid of all the bloated crap at&t slaps on the phone?
I really like the iPhone's looks, and ease of use etc...but it just seems like it could be so much more, and I am stuck with at&t for another 2 years now, so I am just wondering should I switch to the Tilt before it's too late...
Thanks for any input!!
Michael
If you are going to use the tilt to watch movies... you shall be disappointed... read the various threads on video driver issue... it shall answer a lot of questions...
As far as movies go, I'd say it really depends on your standards of what quality a movie should be when viewed on a phone. What I mean is, I have seen many complaints of the video drivers on the Tilt. I think these must be from people who require/expect excellent quality video.
To me, movies look great on the Tilt, if you take into account, that this is a phone, not your 42" hdtv lcd, lol. They are definitely good enough to view, and pass time. Of course, again, standards of these things are so subjective, but this is just my 2 cents.
So, if you are looking to enjoy a good movie, in decent quality, then the Tilt is great, if you are looking for an amazing viewing experience, worthy of a videophile, then the Tilt will disappoint. From what I have heard, the iPhone is much better for video, although I have not verified this.
One of the greatest things about the tilt is the community you get here on xda-developers, meaning if you are ever stuck with something, these guys can (and will) help.
However, just using a tilt to watch movies is, imho, a bit of a waste. You may as well buy a cheap PDA if thats all you want. The tilt is an amazing device, full of features. And not using them would be doing the phone injustice.
Therefore, if you want a device which will: manage your photo/music/video album, navigate you, make video calls, make phone calls, send text's/emails, play games on, browse the net on, allow you to show off , get the tilt. If you want a device that will just let you play music and watch video's, stick with the jesusphone.
Edit: Oh by the way, I agree with cincy, i think movie's look spot on on the tilt.
Well to first clear up the confusion, I don't want it just to watch movies on lol...I just meant is it able to watch movies, because I work nights, and need something to pass the time with, ie watching a movie. That is just the only thing I am concerned with, I am aware of all of the other features the Tilt has to offer, and in my opinion it is in a class of it's own compared to the iPhone. I just wanted to make sure it could also play movies, so that I can combine all the features too. My other main concern is my wife's Pantech Duo, seems to me rather slow and bloated, which is what I am wondering about the Tilt. I am decent with PC's, but there are still many things I don't know, and just wanted to find out how easy it would be to clean it up to make it run more efficient.
Yes this forum is great, Apple has nothing this nice to help lol...Thanks for the replies, I have pretty much made up my mind to take the iPhone back and get the Tilt, so you shall be hearing from me again lol, for lot's of help making it work well
Well...
If you like the GUI there is an app/skin/theme for winDOS Mobile 5/6 that makes the GUI look like that of the iPhones.
http://www.iphonetheme4ppc.com/guide_QVGA/
There you go, and now that ive found it...
Im gonna install it myself!
I am an Apple MacBook pro user and love many of apples products... And i think the compatibility of the iphone and MacBook would be fantastic!
However I still prefer my Kaiser because it offers so much and isn't anywhere near as claustrophobic as the iphone with its "Apple Bluetooth" and requirement for itunes to do anything.
Dont get me wrong the iphone is nice but its a fashionable piece of Eye Candy and the Kaiser is a useful peice of engineering.
MM
PS I watch stuff on my Kaiser and playback is fine as far as i see, but there are many who loath HTC for the video drivers.
i watch movies via tcpmp during plane trips and enjoy it!

I have both. iPhone for my wife, Tilt for me. The video playback is night and day. I have yet to find any settings that work acceptably on the Tilt. If this is an important feature, you should look elsewhere because even if you are not a "videophile", the video is sadly disappointing.

And BTW, the web browsing is also WAY better. Again, there is just no comparison, even with Opera.
To me, the biggests problem with the iPhone is lack of 3G, no A2DP, and poor poor PIM syncing and no GPS. Strengths, video playback, multimedia syncing, speaker playback (the speakers although small, are actually quite passable and stereo), photo viewing and web browsing.
I don't play many games, but I would consider it a strength of the iPhone. Not sure about the Tilt.
As for 3rd party apps, my (very personal) opinion is there are very few "must have" apps and the one's I use on the Tilt (Resco, ImClose, AEBPlus) are all about usability and do not really apply to the iPhone. A BIG factor here is that most of the built in MS Apps basically $uck, like the photo viewer, file manager, media player, web browser, so it is almost a must to have the option to install decent apps to "replace" the built in ones. In this way, I think HTC is really doing well in mitigating the poor usability of the MS Apps. Like being able to navigate a playlist with a hardware button? No can do with Windows Media Player mobile. WTF???
You can see this even with the HTC shipped products. Their stuff is better that MS too, and many people come here to look for the HTC programs, many even cook them into ROMS.
So now I have to have room for two apps that do the same thing and it basically clutters up my device. Sort of like the 4 remotes I have to use just to watch TV at home. To me this is poor implementation.
So I am probably in the monority here, but once the iPhone supports GPS, a decent turn by turn navigation program like Tom Tom/ iGo and A2DP, and better syncing, I will be dumping my Tilt (much the same way as I have dumped MS Windows). I expect most of these features will come by the end of 2008.

Probably not a good idea to log into a forum and show disrespect to it's other members.
As for your question, to view movies I simply use TCPMP with a few codecs (which I can't remember the names of, sorry) and videos work like a charm.
I also use Kingdia Video Converter to convert my movies to .avi (if they're not .avi already), then use Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn to compress the movie to QVGA size. Brilliant Quality, small File size, win win win!
imo, iPhone is a joke.

You clearly have not played with one much. The iPhone is smaller, lighter, thinner, and much more aesthetically appealing than the Tilt. In February, Apple is releasing SDK for third party Apps, and a GPS attachment (here: http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2007/12/17/gps-add-on-for-the-iphone-demonstrated-to-ship-in-february/
is supposed to be in the works as well. And I suppose not unlike the Tilt, I could always Jailbreak my iPhone, and put homebrew on it, but the iPhone was designed to be a lot harder to take care of if something goes wrong, like the battery not taking a charge any more, you would have to send it in to Apple, but you couldn't because of breaking the warranty. At least with the Tilt, you can put back what you have done to at least get repairs lol....

By community I mean the forum in general. It is the method of communication I am speaking to not the individual members. I fully realize many people have contributed lots of work and advice, and I try to do the same when I am able, but by nature of this being an open ended forum, you don't always find answers to your questions. It can be hit or miss. It just depends sometimes if someone happens to see your post and have an answer. How is that disrespectful?
Back on point, I think this forum is helpful in learning about Windows Mobile products and sometimes getting specific questions answered. This is something also available via Apple, in addition to dedicated product support, which both Apple and HTC offer. If I were considering it as a factor in buying a product, I would score one for the Tilt, as I think this forum is better than the Apple forum, but I would score one for Apple as well because I think their dedicated support is better (stateside anyway, plus it helps I have both an official and unofficial store near me and can walk in and talk to a person).
But are you also sure there isn't another "undocumented" forum much like this one for the Apple products, because BTW HTC also has a forum which leaves a lot to be desired.

Well I love PPC, but obviously you must not have owned an iPhone. I switched back to Windows Mobile for technical reasons, but I have to say we're far away from the iPhone UI. PointUI has a long way to go, everything in the iPhone is connected.
I still surf with Safari, when I have free time, and sitting in front of the TV at home.
lol I just came back from the iphone myself.
Like you, I wanted it for video playback. The screen is great and video playback was smooth.
But there were too many basic things that you couldn't do even with jailbreaking the phone that just left me annoyed.
if you don't mind re-encoding your video the tilt is fine. I re-encoded all my videos to slightly smaller res and put it into an mp4 container and played it on coreplayer. Video Playback is smooth, but it could be smoother with better driver support. But I'm not complaining.
To me, the Tilt spins circles around the iphone.

Not sure how far your computer skills go but trust me, the iPhone is more of a computer than the HTC TyTN II.
You seem to miss the point of the iPhone (the ingenius GUI/OS/touch operation), forget about the crappy EDGE and the lousy camera, this is not why people buy the iPhone.
Watching movies/listening to music is more fun with the iPhone due to the fantastic display quality.
Right now, I'm using three phones: the iPhone (hacked, has more than two dozends of third party apps installed and works like a charm), the HTC TyTN II (business stuff) and the Nokia N95 8GB (family vacations, leisure time).
My favourite is still the iPhone but I wish Apple would have offered it with UMTS/HSDPA from the start.

Only when it comes to third party apps and especially data connections.
Otherwise, the iPhone is by far superior. Of course if you don't mind the sluggish GUI operation of the TyTN II, not even mentioning the ridiculous touch screen operation HTC wants to sell us as innovative, the TyTN II really is a great phone. Don't get me wrong: the iPhone lacks a lot of features but using it on a daily basis as my main phone, I like it much more than the TyTN II or the Nokia N95 8GB. I won't even mention the Nokia E90 which sleeps well in an office drawer since I got the iPhone.
The iPhone is no business phone though, no blackberry support, MS Exchange support is half-baked at best and although the mail application is the best I've ever seen on a phone, the PIM capability is somehow limited compared to other "smartphones".
There is however a catch regarding the iPhone: if you're not a regular and enthusiastic iTunes customer, the iPhone may not satisfy you completely.
The ingenius thing about the iPhone is the easy operation and for the first time finally a satisfying touch control operation.

Why doesn't google

Why doesn't Google implement video chat into Gtalk or Google voice? I think that would be the next logical step in the evolution of those two apps what do you guys here think?
Skpe is good but I don't use it and I would rather use a app that I already use on my desktop that I am familiar with that I can use on my mobile device.
(Nexus One) plus it would give me a choice.
I know that the Nexus One does not have a front facing camera, but a native video chat app for the android os would be best. plus it simple to make a mirror for the camera so that it can be use for video chat.
What makes you think they're not working on it for Android already?
http://www.google.com/chat/video
I know that they have the plug in for the desktop which i use, i do hope that it will be implemented ,maybe the next update (gingerbread).
Won't do us much good without a front facing camera. Maybe once the hardware becomes more common they will add it.
I remember when video phones were all the rage many years back. The plans were ridiculous, the quality was piss poor, and no one used it. Now that mobile networks are getting faster it might start to make sense finally.
well once a long time ago i had a iphone (god forgive for i have sin) and some guy had written a video chat program for it which never was release but i copy the mirror setup to use the camera on the iphone which did not have a front facing camera. so nexus one could use it .
You don't have to have a front facing camera for video chat.
Imagine you're talking to someone and see something cool. "Hey, check this out" / turn on video chat for a few seconds and point at whatever / turn video chat off.
As video chat becomes more and more popular, I bet that's what it'll be used for rather than looking at someone's face for 30 minutes.

I certainly hope they do but I don't think they're in much of a hurry because alternative services like Fring and Skype already have it covered.
However [and this may be a little off the rails] I hope that MMS is high on their Google Voice priority list because people send me pictures and not only can I not see them, it doesn't even tell me that I got it. Very annoying.
Whats the point to use video chat to show someone something, just record a video and mms it. I don't think video chat will catch on anyways, its been tried before with landlines. People just don't like to be seen when talking on the phone. They wouldn't mind seeing you but they don't want to be seen. Plus I see schools getting pissy about new types of "sexting."

for one its real time ,i won't have to open another app to send a mms, i can just point and show and im done.
I guess it's a question of time that Google will bless us with a full blown video app (mobile or not). The recent acquisition of Gips gives us a hint.
As voice and video is however only marginally close to Google's mission (and possibly, core competence) of making the world's information universally accessible, they are dragging their feet. And, they make internet-enabling all sorts of devices a priority.
But I can't wait for an integration of Google voice with gizmo5, which would make the talk/chat client more Skype-like.

People don't use it, infact it's a massive flop.
Apple have tried to revive it with "facetime" but I don't think it'll get very far tbh.
actually I think it'll be more a success this time round, when it was first implemented people weren't as comfortable being in front of a cam as they are now... see chat roulette etc as proof
lol its the most pointless thing ever, especially with facetime, can only be used on wifi? ill just use my web cam on my pc then...
No body uses it, and its not going to take off... the only way it would take off is there was a chat roulett app lol.

[Q] Bit of a project...

I'm trying to make a cheap 'webcam' in order to see the mouth of my local river, in order to see if is worth me going out to sea to sail. Bit random i know...
I need to make a cheap camera which uses ip or video chat to link to the phones camera.
I was thinking of using a u8180 which i got for £19 and a solar phone charger ~£15 and placing these in a watertight enclosure.
The last piece of my puzzle is the software to use. It has to be android as the phone is android but what can i use to get the phone broadcasting video either back to the web or direct to my phone?
Someone suggested 'Tango' video chat but i'm not sure whether it will work for me. I was thinking that a video chat software with 'auto answer' would be ideal but i'm open to suggestions. I don't know whether its feasable to have the phone uploading to a website but this would be the best outcome as it would let other people view the feed.
Anyone got any suggestions? Ideally it wouldn't involve anything other than ready made applications as i can't code!
thanks!

[Q] Secret video recorder?

Hi, has anyone been able to install and use some of the secret video recorders? Best way to accomplish this is to use your Gear as a webcam and record the stream on your device.
Here is an old thread as a reference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540662&highlight=tinycam
But I concur your description on usage is disturbing.

Well I don't see why you would want secret recording in a truck this post is very very dodgy and should not be encouraged
display is what consume most of the power on our gear. turn it off and you gain extra hours of functionality.
if i want to take creepy shots, there are better devices out there.
Yes it works
I have to pro edition and it works. The thing is you should set the limit to 10 minutes and the resolution is 640x480 and you are good to go even with the screen off
Clearly the people that are in the Galaxy Gear forum don't understand what you can and can't post.
This request is perfectly logical and is indeed in position to be fulfilled.
Secret recorders exist for sale on many websites, secret recorders exist for phones, secret recorders will exist for the Galaxy Gear. Someone will eventually develop an app specifically for the Galaxy Gear.
Secret recorders are not illegal, nor are they discouraged. In fact there are many practical uses for secret recorders, both video and audio.
You might be able to push an existing app to the gear via ADB, but I'm not sure if it will work/work properly.
Please stop filling threads with unhelpful responses.

i just want to give an update - secret video recorder pro does work on our Gear, incl screen off. framerate seems to be lower than stock though.

If you didn't called it secret recording, but instead called it something else normal people wouldn't think of you as a person that wanted to go around filming things normal people don't do.
Yes. Call me all fashion, but I don't want people to look at my galaxy gear and think of me as a pervert because someone has been busted using a secret video app on it. Then people start looking at gear as a toy for perverts.
I know spy camera is not used for only kinky stuff, but don't tell me the world needs them.
Do you want people to look at your watch and think bad of you?
If not I think the best way is to not let the media talk about the secret filming.

I agree with you 110% even now I dont use the camera that much as I prefer my phone, for someone to ask for a video recorder where "the screen is off" is really asking for a camera that lets them film people without them knowing, anyone gets busted for doing this then we all get a bad name, I am all for development of our watch but im not into seeing "creepy software" being developed for this.
Camera sound off? yeah a good idea as I dont like drawing attention to my watch, Secret recording? no thanks just too creepy

i'm sure google glass must be the ultimate pervert tool according to that way of thinking
turning off the sound is "as bad" as turning off the screen.
LOL.
Yes. The next ting is a pervert busted filming with secret cam by another with secret cam.
In my country it's not allowed to use "baby cam" filming your own child sleeping.
I guess that will change soon.
For people that have seen the series "person of interest" that may one day be possible .
Where ever you go you are being watched.
I don't even like the "dash cam's" in the cars but that's maybe because of the way I drive. .
Overall it's not good that in the future we are so controlled that every step we take are being watched by gps and camera.
But I understand it's to late to stop it.
As you know in new cars your face are being filmed while you drive and the car are filming where you drive and how fast.
The cars can be stopped remotely and so on.
In my country they want to use that to monitor people's driving an give them automatically tickets.
The speed wil automatically be limited for not much over the speed limit.
And of course stop the cars that are used in a crime.
From 2014 every little company has to monitor every step the the employee are doing all of the working day so that the government can establish if the workers are not working for black money and not paying tax.
It's starting to get crazy.
We called it big brother and science fiction a few years ago.
But in the end crime will probably be harder to do with out getting stopped before it happens.
But again. In my opinion normal people don't go around filming in secret, I understand people that say you are being filmed anyway by other devices.
Maybe in the future the popular thing is go to a non cam allowed restaurant or beach
Before it was not allowed with cameras in public toilets, but now its ok as long as you have a sign.
I guess I'm to old to like it.
Younger generation are more used to it.

Personally I am loving the idea of the secret recorder and it should be called secret recorder. I think it would come in handy when being stopped or questioned by the police. I have heard and read about many situations were officers actually violate the rights of people they have sworn to protect. Another good use would be during a crime. The perpetrator could be recorded without even knowing he is being recorded. This would go a long way to catch a criminal. The possibilities are endless. I don't think that just because someone says they want secret recording we should automatically jump to the conclusion its for perverted reasons.
I use the camera to shoot quick videos I'd otherwise miss of my 2 year old daughter. The problem is she knows what the camera is, so if she sees it on the screen she stops what she's doing and keeps saying 'I want to see it' because she likes watching herself. So I'd love a secret recorder so I could shoot a video of her candidly without her standing there asking to see the video the whole time.
Not everything is for Japanese perverted salarymen, dudes.

watch your back, i'm sure one of the boston saints already called the police and marked you as a possible predator!
in theory, problem is solved. i found the secret video recording app that is working with the gear.
you can get it at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zeronoiseapps.secretvideorecorderpro
when the camera is recording, watch face stays lit - you have to manually switch it off (it continues to record both video and audio).

Any tool can be used for good and bad. It's much better to risk the bad when you can do so much good with this.
Imagine recording the PIGS in the act of brutalizing innocent people on the streets. Recording a robberies, recording rape, etc.
But since this usage hasn't crossed your mind already, you're clearly one of the sheeps of society ready to turn a blind eye and bow your head to the powerful at every corner.

I have a friend who wants to be a cop. (he only told me because I was his best friend) He's got anger management issues. He told me he enjoys every legal chance he can get to beat on people violently. The team who he works with in the force, also takes the same enjoyment whenever legal. He's let me in on so many stories of him and his team beating on people once it's deemed legal. That's the excuse people like him need to be legally protected while unleashing their personal anger issues.
Eventually because of his anger issues, we stopped associating.
Every type of job attracts certain types of people. Think about it.

I worked with several ex, off duty, and retired cops for about 20 years. There were a few nice guys but the majority fit your description exactly.
