This doesn't belong in the Development section. It is well known that once you root and install ROM's you will not be able to update over OTA. If you want flash back to stock and use Kies mini to get the update...By the way it's only JH6 which is still Eclair 2.1

I wouldn't know if there are any software update's since i can't update over the air. and i dont wanna go back to stock 2.1 cuz i will loose all of my progress in all of my games that are on my phone.

seriously. read.
2.2 isnt officially out on ATT yet.
if you are running 2.2, then obviously you arent going to get ANY updates from ATT since they are not pushing 2.2 out.
common sense will tell you that if ATT is not providing 2.2 to us, then obviously there wont be any updates since their only update is JH7 which is ECLAIR 2.1-update1
there are about 5.2 million threads in the q/a and general sections that discuss this. please do some reading.

You won't lose your progress in your games if you back up with Titanium Backup, but there is no reason to go back to stock because there are no updates that have anything newer than your Froyo ROM.

as you can see i am a huge noob at this stuff. but to reply to sixstringsg about the titanium backup...how would i use that? cuz it's a app. so if i go back to stock 2.1 that will be deleted, meaning i will have to re-install it and i will still loose my progress.

Install it, and back up all user apps. Then either copy that over to your computer, or your external SD card if you have one, then when you flash back to stock, Root, install Titanium and reinstall through it.

Titanium backup and restore does exactly what it says it does. it will backup and restore apps+data
once on a new rom, you would install titanium backup again and click on RESTORE and it will restore your apps
the apps are saved on your internal SDcard which does not get wiped by merely flashing new rom

Please do some research before posting a new thread, let alone in the wrong section. If you are running 2.2 then you have flashed a rom and know how to search for your answers. It is all there to be read.

[Q] When Froyo hits, will your root and everything with it be "restored"?

BEFORE you judge me lol : I'm a new android user, and I've searched and read through the forum and FAQs alike.
Sorry if this is already answered. I've tried the search and read through the FAQs already but there's so much information my head will just explode from it.
Also I'm a fresh android user (just switched over from the iPhone, yay?). I was a very enthusiastic jailbreaker for the iPhone when I was still using that device. Hence my enthusiasm for all things "hackable" for the Android device as well.
All my blabbering aside, I'm just wondering this.
When the Froyo update hits the i9000, your root and everything with it(custom firmwares and stuff?) will be "broken" and be restore as the "stock" Froyo firmware/build right?
Am I even making sense to anyone?
for new firmware, you have to flash it, and so, everything will loss, storage in your internal and external SD will remain but all you app, mod, messages, call log, contact, etc will be lost
like you've partition your home PC with app data saved in C drive and all other documents in D drive, when you reinstall your OS, you wipe off your C and install it again and everything in D should remain (if you do it the right way )
correct me if i am wrong
We won't know for sure, but the way HTC handles Froyo updates, there is no data loss.
But to reply OP, yes, root will most probably be lost. But ability to flash custom firmware should still be available. Afterall, in the first place we don't even need root to flash custom firmwares in the first place, at least on the SGS.

So this does mean that we will be able to get the froyo update through kies even though we are running rooted custom ROM?
alright thanks for the speedy reply and clarification. i have a lot of new terms i'll need to learn for the android now. lol.
sorry, OP, are you talking about an official Samsung firmware update using kies or the one using odin3?

Most probably not. You might have to return to stock firmware to get any updates from Kies.
But what's the point? The Froyo firmware will be available in the Odin form certainly.

i think the stock official firmware update. i'm also afraid that flashing a new OS for my current 2.1 will screw up any local settings. i need to do more research about this whole flashing, rooting thing...
shall spare you guys my questions. lol.
ironic from my previous post, i'll just like to ask one simple question.
since i'm a totally new android user, i should just wait for the OFFICIAL Froyo for the SGSi9000, update it and wait for some modified version of the OS, and i'll flash it over for a speedier, more accessable phone?
(i've read the FAQ a thousand times lol.)

the official one is somewhat released near September as i remember... so you have to wait till that time to do it.... i know nothing about flashing using Kies since I am a new user to android as well
but what i am thinking is: either you flash the current firmware (JP3, JP2, etc) using Odin3 or the official firmware using the Kies, the chance is if you brick your phone, samsung will also not responsible for it, so... unless you take your phone to the customer service, you are still risking
well you definitely know more than me lol thanks for the information folks. imma root my phone, don't think there's any risk ye. wish me luck lol.
I am gonna necro this thread since I am an absolute idiot.
It took me a few days just to understand that root is not the SAME as flashing. Finally got that through my head. Hence I can keep my stock JG4 firmware while having root.
But what happens when Froyo comes along. As someone already said, we are going to lose root if we update via KIES. Then what? Do we just use the One Click Root to root our phone again? (Right now I haven't found a reason to flash to a custom ROM yet.)
I am asking this since I am sick of losing all my data in my phone every time I have to upgrade my firmware, but if I can't root my phone afterwards, titanium backup won't work.

Offical JI6 Update from Samsung via Mini Kies

For those who down play twitter, this is why it can be good. Samsung has released a direct way to get the JI6 update without waiting for OTA via Mini Kies(really? lol). So for those who want it that way, here you go
Tweet http://twitter.com/#!/SamsungMobileUS/status/27244539879
Link http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=340607
i am stuck on step 4.1 .... do we need a full BATTERY ?
JI6 Update problems
Okay, now after updating through Kies Mini, I keep getting errors:
com.android.phone
android.process.media
com.android.calendar
etc... has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
and then you have to hit "Force Close"
...anyone know how to fix this?
Stock Vibrant
Lag Fix & Root
...FIXED
I just flashed to stock and then to JI6 with ODIN and now everything works.
after updated, my phone now stuck at bootscreen
i updated mines successfully..
please be AWARE that you have to DISABLE any lagfix before performing this update or else you may soft brick your phone. if you soft-bricked, i suggest flashing back to stock JFD build via ODIN and then update to ji6 via Kies Mini.
also be sure your usb debugging is on.
i also suggest you refer to the samsung kies mini thread that was originally posted in the vibrant general section since most have shared their experiences with updating there.
so according to the site,,, GPS fix is not included in JI6, it will be available in a few weeks...
few weeks = December

Anyone done this and able to see fandango app in the market? I am not able to
My friend got the update OTA and is able to see fandango.
i did it successfully but don't see the fandango app either
duno what's going on there
How can I download this update!!! Stupid me hit cancel instead of install when i got my notification for it. I cant figure out how to update it now.
not updating?
i spoke to my local tmobile rep about what this update is really about and if it's even worth it for me to update...he's rooted and running ryans lagfix, one of the gps fixes and some other goodies like myself, his opinion, not worth it...wait for 2.2.
so i'm ignoring this update, any opinions?
Kies Mini Clockwork flashable
If anybody is interested, I have thrown together a Clockwork flashable JI6 update for personal use. There are 2 versions.
*Warning, proceed at your own risk as I cannot and will not be held responsible for your actions. Always perform a ClockWork ROM backup before flashing. The same rules apply regarding lag fixes as all other ROMs.
1st - This will wipe your data!!!
2nd - No format included (While this will not wipe your data, you will loose root and any installed mods... I recommend using the 1st dl if your coming from anything other than stock or leaked)

If this is a question regarding missing applications in the Market...
Quoting from this thread. The directions below worked for me running JI6. Just make sure to look for UVJI6 on both lines, rather than UVJI2. FYI, I changed them back after I downloaded and installed all of my apps in hopes of Google rectifying the issue (assuming it's on their end).
++++how to fix missing apps in the market++++
Missing market apps with new firmwares is always an issue because the market does not recognize the fingerprint. You need to be rooted and should open the file /system/build.prop in a text editor Scroll down till you come to the section titled # Do not try to parse ro.build.description or .fingerprint. After this are two lines, on which the name of the firmware will be stated as T959UVJI2. Change the ast three letters in the name on both lines to JFD. Then save the file and reboot, and then go to market and download and install a couple of apps. After this the missing apps will show up again and won't go away until you install another unofficia firmware Last.
+++ Thank rajendra82 for this market fix, works great +++
Fandango movies . I have it on mine. I also used kies to update jI6 , successfully updated with no problems. I lost root but afterwards I rerooted.

[Q] Questions about 2.2 Froyo on Hero CDMA

Is Cyanogenmod the only Froyo option for the CDMA Hero? I'm thinking of upgrading from the Sprint 2.1 firmware. I have several questions:
Really Important:
Can I downgrade to the original Sprint 2.1 firmware without breaking anything? I really don't want an expensive phone-shaped paperweight if anything goes wrong.
Can I keep the HTC sense UI (I only want the main menu dialer anyway)? I saw that thread saying Sense 2.2 is about 85% done.
Somewhat Important:
Can I install the wifi tethering app on 2.2 Cyanogenmod?
Does Sprint notice if you tether and cut you off?
Do I have to root my phone?
Isn't giving root to potentially malicious apps a bad idea?
Is giving root on a per-request basis?
Can I remove the stupid Sprint boot animation?

Can I keep the HTC sense UI (I only want the main menu dialer anyway)? I saw that thread saying Sense 2.2 is about 85% done? the Froyo rom yo usaw is the wildfire port and its in major alpha form right now. There is no fully operational Froyo sense rom for the hero yet
Somewhat Important:
Can I install the wifi tethering app on 2.2 Cyanogenmod? YES im using it right now
Does Sprint notice if you tether and cut you off? NO there is no way for them to see yo u have root and are using it
Do I have to root my phone? YES in order to go to CM6 or any custom rom you need to. ALong with wireless teething
Isn't giving root to potentially malicious apps a bad idea? Of course there is always a risk for anything. Thats why you nandroid before installing anything or before making setting changes.
Is giving root on a per-request basis? YES..superuser will pop up asking for request for any app that asks for request..you can allow or deny
Can I remove the stupid Sprint boot animation?YES, Cyanogenmod CM6 removes the sprint boot logo with e android cyanogen mod one.

And you can All you'd have to do is RUU
If all you want from Sense is the dialer, there is always Dialer One on the Market. I have been running more AOSP-based ROMs than I ever really ran Sense, so when I finally got bored with the stock dialer and gave it a shot, I didn't even notice it was supposed to replicate the Sense dialer, ha. It's a hell of a lot more customizable, and I think it's much "cleaner" looking overall (especially if you have it set to hide the green dial button in the contact list, and NOT have the keypad when the dialer is open by default, and taking up at least half the screen).
That Wildfire port is old. This is the current ongoing 2.2 Sense port, if you're into that sort of thing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834840
Okay, that was exactly what I needed to know, thank you. After reviewing the various pages, are these the correct steps to get 2.2 Cyanogenmod up and running?
Root phone
Backup apps/SMS, etc.
Backup using nandroid
Revert to the 2.1 .5 (NOT .6 or .7) firmware
Flash Cyanogenmod
Restore app/SMS backups
Install GApps, Sprint Apps, Sense port (as needed)

I tried adobe flash 10 but, from what i searched it looks like to me anyway that it wont work with this phone and never will? any ideas on what i should do next

Yes, the Hero really can't install full Flash 10.1 because the default specs just won't handle Flash. Supposedly its possible with some overclocking and/or JIT enabled, but even then most ppl say it's not perfect.
We can install a Flash Lite plugin to browsers....try searching for that either on the market or through Google.

Can I use the RUU method and root or would I have to completely reset to Sprint's 2.1 and lose everything? Thanks for putting up with my questions.

You can root with .7. I used Regaw's last time I did after an ruu to .7 build. There are great Gingerbread roms now. Aosp flavored like Jaybob's Rom which has the newest .35 kernel baked in; cm7 has begun using that kernel in their builds as well ( although it might not be the newest yet). You can download titanium backup to back up apps and data (sms too). Just follow the directions in the op of whatever Rom you are looking to install.

It worked! That was nice and painless, just don't have your Hero plugged into a USB hub with a dodgy cord like I did. I'm going to go and disable OTA updates as described in the old tutorial. Should I install Cyanogenmod or aosp? It looks like some of the Hero wiki links are pretty dated now, and the only aosp 2.3 link is to a 2.3 aosp labeled unstable and the thread mentioning that the dev quit working on it. I'd love a recommendation on how to get a stable 2.3 install running, I mostly want Exchange sync and tethering.
Id reccomend jaybob rom or kush I'd say jaybob since he still does update from time to time both r still awesome

[Q] BELL i9000m users: is the Froyo 2.2 update ready yet ?

Does anyone have any info regarding the froyo update for Bell Canada users ?

Whats the best way to back up all my apps -- can Titanium pro do this ?
Titanium Backup is one of the best IMO. But you'll need root acces to run it. If you want to know why! Because Titanium also back up your paid apps and system apps. Be carefull about system apps as you really don't want to restore them on a different firmware than the one they've been back up from. So make sure you only restore apps you really installed yourself. When you will be ready to restore your apps on froyo just go trough the list and make sure you uncheck any apps you don't know about cause it could cause you problem to restore gtalk from eclair on froyo (exemple). Once you start the restore process on Titanium Backup you won't be prompted for your approval for every application by android as you would be if using another program to restore them. TB will install all of them on his own and even restore their market link. Once complete just restart the phone and open the market to see all you installed apps again and be informed about available update.
This is really the best available program to back up and restore apps but you need a rooted phone. Don't worry about warranty you can always unroot a phone after your procedure.
Regarding the availability of froyo update just do a little research and you'll find an approximate date cause it's not there (officially) for now but should be soon.

Thanks alot buddy. I just downloaded the Z4 Root app. Does this work with i9000m ? can anyone confirm ?
If so I'm gonna root my phone this aft. and back up my stuff!
When updating, i hear the best thing to do is a factory reset after update.
Once I boot back into the phone with Froyo, do I install Titanium Back up ? then open the app and hit "restore" ? I'm assuming it would look on my SD card for my "old" back up of apps ? I can only assume it doesn't back up stuff to a cloud/server.
Also, is this internal SD it backs up to or external SD
There was the first week of December floating around, and now I don't even know anymore.
Seems everybody has it now except us...
Yeah a good number of us I9000M users have updated to an unofficial bell ROM leaked a week or so back.
If you want the official rom, the last I heard was mid December.
If you do the unofficial route do some reading before hand before you decide. Many I9000M users have had corrupt internal SD cards, which result in a trip to a bell store for service.
You have been warned !

Unrooting my captivate to get AT&T 2.2?

I rooted my phone (I think) using I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe (I think). Looking at the phone with SUPER MANAGER the ENABLE ROOT function is NOT checked off. Does that mean my phone is not rooted? Is there another way of telling if my phone is rooted? I read somewhere that you need an unrooted phone in order to get the AT&T froyo 2.2 which hopefully will be released any day now. If I need the phone unrooted to get the update is there an easy way to unroot it that will not wipe out my programs and data?
Thanks for any help.

As far as being unrooted, no one knows. But I can tell you I plain don't care about an official release from att. I will continue to use roms that are developed by folks around here. they are better than anything that att can put out.

Pirate, I have been a member here for a long time, & been doing a lot of reading since I got this phone. I have never seen so many people get bricked and that scares me. I tried to root the phone just in order to make backups....I am a backup freek and for good reason. My last phone was the DASH 3G (still have it). I got the HTC Windows phone but only kept it a couple of weeks before realizing how far it has to go. The Captivate is definitely a lot better than anything i have ever had and it does not seem necessary to flash it in order to get all the nice apps running. I will be happy with the AT&T update if it ever appears. I have spent the past few weeks customizing the Captivate and will post my homescreen and a list of apps I am using.

Do you have the SuperUser App in your APP drawer? If so you are rooted.
super user
I have SUPERUSER PERMISSIONS.....some of the apps listed inside it are:
titanium backup
rom manager
root explorer
sqlite editor
one click lag fix (I dont think that one worked)
So do I need to UNROOT in order to get the AT&T update to 2.2?
Just odin one click and master clear.. then hook up to kies...

master clear
Is there a way to unroot that will not erase all of my work?
How did you know its coming any day now.
first of all, 2.2 is not coming soon....
second of all, you ARE rooted
third of all, doesn't matter if you "unroot" (although you dont really seem to be a candidate for rooting anyway)...because once you're rooted or once you change the existing software (which you did with the program you listed in the first post between the "i thinks"), you negate the ability to recieve over-the-air updates from at&t
not that ANY of this matters, because the second those firmwares hit at&t phones it will be here and available to flash
not to mention we already have 2.2 available unrooted (the leaked version (might be different))
if you want me to send you the one-click ODIN file to flash stock 2.2 let me know
So it's a confirmed fact that rooted phones can't get the OTA updates?
nope only that some people have reports that they have not been able to update after they try and use atts update....

Thanks for your offer! I would love 2.2. Someone on this board said he works for AT&T said the update was coming on the 19th....guess not ))
I need to ask a few questions about applying the update:
1. Does my home screen get reset?
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
4. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?
thanks whitesox....I'll be keeping a eye on this thread.
Sorry Whitesox - I'm REALLY REALLY BORED at work today - hence all the forum spamming today
I need to ask a few questions about applying the update:
1. Does my home screen get reset?
Yes
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
Unless you had them backed up somehow (say using Titanium Backup) - then yes.
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
Possibly - but if your using a Custom ROM? I've found that only those I have purchased show up under the Market and I had to hunt them all down again.
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
Not necessarily true - for Apps/Data you should be fine restoring. But I wouldn't recommend restoring any type of System Data as it would conflict with the update.
5. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?
As in? Froyo specs means you will have additional functionality - the biggest one is Flash for websites. That and you will be able to run more applications from the Market vs. your current Eclair 2.1 ROM.

Thanks for the response. I have titanium backup, as well as SUPER MANAGER which also does backups. Also have ROm MANAGER but I am sure that will not apply....As for my installed apps & widgets I have a list of everything installed. Looking forward to 2.2 and FLASH 10 WHITESOX!
The official Froyo update has been coming "any day now" since September.
Just personal preference to run Titanium Backup - I know it works and I can use the free version to do everything I want or need.
Yea - I had forecasted we would see the Froyo OTA update from ATT with Source before Christmas - It does appear we won't see this update until sometime in 2011 - like um never?
At this point your stuck with either the OTA JH7 Update 2.1 Eclair - or you can get the Leaked Froyo (not recommended stock) or your plethora of Custom ROM's in the Dev forum.
I swear I think the Captivate has more custom roms then a room full of bunnies. I look at the other Galaxy S line and I see a few - but not as many to choose from here. This is the one major plus of owning a Captivate I guess
which one to get?
OK you and whitesox seem to know what you are doing. What is the best & most stable version to get?
