Gingerbread based theme for Ascend and MDPI & HDPI devices Update [1/10] - Android Themes

Update 1/10 Minor update to some, maybe major to others, I've made some changes to the status bar pull down for Ascend users, I've changed the main text to be black, I'm still not completely happy with it, so i'll keep tweaking... Also, I've added support for HDPI devices in the Gingerbread3.5.zip, in general the theme should work on a wider variety of devices.

Update 1/9 The theme is pretty much complete
In order for Ascend users to get the white clock you need to download buildprop and replace the one under your system folder with it. You'll have to be rooted and use a file manager or you could use adb shell or a terminal to replace your build.prop
Another change to the build.prop for the popups!!!
Special thanks to yuyuye for the information.
I've attached some screenshots of the theme in action. There are many more changes not visible in the screenshots, the majority of the framework-res have been updated to match the new theme.
UPDATE 12/16
I've attached the metamorph theme in case anyone wants to try it, i would say it's beta quality as it's not finished, but it's usable. Just load the v0.1.zip file on to your sdcard, download metamorph and install away. If you have any basic questions, feel free to ask but I won't be providing an major support yet because it's not finished. I would say it's 75% complete at the most. And as always, you shouldn't have any problems but USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
UPDATE 12/22
New version v0.3 with a change to the submenu, I changed the submenu to white so the text is legible until i can get the Ascend deodexed and properly change the color of the text...
The download labeled GingerbreadAscend3.zip is may specifically for the Ascend I don't recommend anyone apply it on any other phones
The download labeled Gingerbread3.zip is for any and all MDPI phones
Have fun!!!

Insrtuctions for installation:This is a Metamorph theme, so download and install Metamorph. Put the theme on your sdcard. Make sure your phone is rooted, you have busbox downloaded and installed and that usb debugging is turned on
For Ascend users, download your appropriate build.prop file and use a program like root explorer or subfs to copy and paste it into the /system/ directory, if you don't want to purchase one of those programs, download this program from the market "Mount /system (rw / ro)" open it and mount the system as r/w then use adb shell or a terminal emulator to copy the file over
Code:
su
cp /sdcard/build.prop /system/build.prop

UPDATE 2/3
I am no longer supporting this theme, I'm moving on to bigger and better. Happy themeing!!!!

Made a little progress using apk manager to decompile some of the xmls, got the date to show up white but still not the time and popup option menus(not sure what to call them). If anyone has any expertise, I could use the help....

Keep up the good work, I am looking fws to checking it out!

If you send me your framework-res.apk I can fix the code for the pop-up menu text.

I'd really appreciate it... I've attached it in Metamorph form, if you don't mind, what xml is responsible for those properties?

Thanks, but problem is I don't have a "values" folder in my framework, much less an xml called "style" in any of the folders...
wait..
I'm an idiot... found it

It wasn't re-compiling the whole framework for me either, i had to to trick it to get it to re-compile the styles.xml by putting it in a different folder and renaming it... Flashed it to my phone.... and... no difference, pulled the framework back down and made sure the changes where present and they are... the Ascend doesn't seem to use those files at all... I'm pretty sure too because i accidentally deleted all the files in the values folder except the styles.xml and the phone works fine...
Thanks for your ideas Benny879, if you have any insight as to whats going on, I'd appreciate any help you could give, in the mean time i'm going to be pouring through these xml files, looking for any clues...

For anyone following the progress on this, the problem seems to be that this phone uses odex files instead of the more easily assessable jar or apks, so I'm looking into deodexing the necessary files... If anyone could offer assistance, I would appreciate it...

The gingerbread metamorph theme I'm working on will change your lock screen sliders, your notification bar and slide down, your dialog confirmation buttons, market place tab button and a bunch of other misc graphics, your signal bars, battery, bluetooth, etc... The theme i'm working on doesn't touch the launcher. i personally use launcher pro, so this theme doesn't conflict with it, but if you want your launcher specifically to look like gingerbread's, you can find themes already made for launcher pro..

[THEME]Android Swype Skin - HTC_IME like || WVGA & HVGA

Hello
First of all thanks goes to Daneshm90 for his script
I really like HTC_IME but JIT dont like it So I had to use other keyboard which is working with JIT. I found Swype but I don't like how it's looks like. I did't found any skin for Android Swype... So I've made my own HTC_IME like skin.
Here is the result of my work:

}
WVGA (now only portrait but I'll make landscape too) = N1, Desire, Incredible, EVO 4G, Liquid, etc
HVGA = Dream, Sapphire, Legend, Backflop, Eris, etc
To install new skin you have to download attached file for your resolution and fallow this steps (SDK needed):
1. Extract files.
2. Connect your phone to PC with enabled debuging mode.
3. Run Swype.bat
4. Wait untill the script finish.
5. Unplug your phone and you are ready to go
Those seemed to work for my swype. It could be version specific.
You can also download only images.
If you downloaded images you can apply them by using some root explorer and replacing files or you can use apk manager (sdk needed) and fallow this steps:
1. Place your apk into this folder "place-apk-here-for-modding"
2. Run script and choose decompile.
3. Open folder "out".
4. Go to \assets\keyboards
5. Replace images
6. Run script again and choose compile
7. choose sign.
8. Your app with new skin is in folder called "place-apk-here-for-modding".
I tested HVGA version on HTC Magic 32A.
But I dont have WVGA device so if you will test it post your opinion.
If you want also that popup look:
Read THIS.
Sorry for my English

I always wondered if this was posibble.. Thanks a lot for this.
I'm confused how to install however.. i downloaded the images zip file but have no idea how to apply it. There is no such setting in swype settings. Any help??
i've installed it, its cool ! but i want it in blue xD can i edit the images but then where i put 'em ? and if i unrar the apk and edit it, i have to sign it :S but i dunno how .

You have to download apk file and just install or found app folder on your device and replace images.

You can use APK Manager to do this. Just put apk into correct folder run script and choose decompile, find your pngs, edit them and compile apk. And you have also option to sign application.

Remove swype.apk due too swype asked us to remove all apk's.
You can make this into a morph just too replace the images

That wont work. morph cannot sign apk's and this will require signing the apk since its content will be modified.
Ur best bet now would be to create a simple script, where a user with swype running on their phone can connect it to their pc, the script pulls it from their /data/app folder, extracts it, replaces its png's with urs, repackages n signs it, uninstalls the version on the users phone and then installs the newly modified one. Let me know if u need any help creating the script
K so heres my little simple script. This is how it works :
1. Requirements adb,java,windows
2. Have ur phone connected and run the script.
3. Once done u'll have ur themed swype installed on ur phone
It basically pulls the apk from ur phone, extracts it, replaces the images, rezips it, resigns it, removes swype from ur phone, installs this modded version.
Hey Cypis, its wierd, when i try to modify with compression level -mx9 which apk manager uses, it force-closes me on the phone, however if i change it to mx0 which is no compression it works. Did u have these issues as well ? Reminds me i gotta add an option to customize compression level in apk manager. Admins, u should have no trouble with this script as it requires u HAVE swype installed on ur phone
I didnt have these issues... thats great that someone care about make it working.

Hmm, k. So perhaps its just me
So users who care about app size, you can edit the .bat file in any text editor of ur choice, and change -mx0 to anything from -mx1...-mx9. 0 being least/no compression, 9 being most compression.
is it just me or are the images only hvga? aren't they supposed to be wvga?

Not sure, dont own any wvga device. Works fine on my htc magic though, im guessing cuz its hvga
Anyway in terms of script, i added a little thing more, it now backs up ur /data/data swype folder cuz some might complain they dont want to lose their swype dictionary.

Ok, I just had to ask. I noticed in your screenshots the Language notification overlay on the Q key is black. I've been searching on how to get mine black as I'd like to skin my Swype with an HTC skin.
Did you just edit the .png's to have that PL on there or did you manage to edit some other file (probably some smali file in the classes.dex)?
If you did change it (non-static/ changes depending on language selected), can you tell me how?
I use a Motorola Droid and while I love Swype to death, I totally dislike the stock skin it has.
Thanks for your time.
that looks so sexy

[THEME] Massive *~BUUF~* For MDPI. Metamorph

So here it goes. After over 250 hours of copying, editing, resizing, renaming, putting things together and so on...
At long last it is ready. Buuf THEME finally for HERO devices.
The amount of work was massive.
For your OWN ease of application i have turned this into a Metamorph Theme. So you need to download Metamorph from the market (free).
SO! Here are the pictures.

- THIS REQUIRED ROOT ACCESS. For those that DON'T have root access, you can only apply the ADW launcher Theme.
- As you can see there is a lot of working going on through there. I tried to make it easiest to apply by creating this via metamorph. This means that WHENEVER an update for your rom comes, you dont have to wait for my update, you can just *simply* apply the metamorph zip and you'll have all your Apps buuf'ed. The only thing i couldn't metamorph yet was the framework-res file. I am planning to integrate that very soon, but at the mo', you're gonna have to apply a .zip via your recovery.
- Also, i am using ADW Launcher. There was a theme named ADW.buuf.theme in the market. That was not working with my rom causing many FC's, so i stripped it down, recreated it from scratch and added a ton of new app images. I have added a lot of default values that suited my liking (highlight color and so on). If you dont like those, simply change them via ADW Settings. ALSO, i have used some code from Eliotstocker to make this theme have some wallpapers. Simply change wallpaper and you should be greeted with a "Buuf Picker" option. In there i have included some of the best Buuf wallpapers.
- As you can see, I have applied a Circular Battery mod (credits to the creators). If you dont like it, simply go to the kitchen and create another mod. It is included in the framework-res.apk zip file
- I am using an edited font, extracted from the Galaxy S by Alex.
- I am also using LCD Density Changer. My setting is @ 139.
- Finally, i am attaching a small .zip file with the bootanimation i use (credit to the creator - sorry don't know who you are) with some amazing boot sequence back from the energy BIOS days, PLUS ad-free hosts, ridding you from the annoying ads.
ROMS
This is initially created for FroydVillain 1.5. The metamorph file should be applicable to ALL AOSP 2.2 Roms for ALL MDPI devices.
The only limitation at the moment is the lack of integration of the framework-res.apk file.
Instructions
1) Download Metamorph and install. Make sure you disable autokiller, in case it kills metamoprh while updating
2) Create a folder AndroidThemes in your SDCard and put the BuufMDPIApps.zip file in it. Apply.
3) Reboot to recovery and apply the framework.zip file
4) Download ADW Launcher and install my edited Buuf Theme. Go to ADW Settings, Theme Preferences, Load and apply.
5 - Optional) Apply fonts.zip via recovery - Credits to Alex
6 - Optional) Apply myboot.zip.
Caution: During the metamorph application of the theme, your phone is going to FC a lot, and sometimes ask for your pin. Please do apply the zip until it is totally done (if it stops, redo it), dont let your phone sleep, and please interact with the FC/SIM lock screens.
Uninstallation
Simply flash your ROM zip file on top. No wipe needed.

Donation
- This complete theme pack wasn't created for money. It was created to make the Buuf Theme live on for the MDPI Devices. All credits are due to the people stated above.
- However, i have put into this over 250+ hours of work. And for those of you who have never themed, well all i can say it was really a pain.

Requests
Requests for unthemed apps are welcome. Glitches and FC's, as long as distortions, should also be reported. If you wish to have your app icon changed in ADW Drawer, give me the app name, or even better the activity name (check it out via adb logcat, while launching the app) and let me know what kind of icon you want.

This as AWESOME Because you've done so much work on this also i reccomend you put it in the legend, eris and Hero CDMA forums because it should work on all those devices to Thats if you havent already
Once i get rid of the framework-res problem with metamorph i will post it under Android themes, and separately to MDPI Devices.
Thanks for the comments
hi!
the theme is looking great, awesome work!!
but i get an error when i try to extract framework-res file from recovery,i get an error that the file is corrupt or something like that...what could be the problem?
thanks!
Very good job !!
It works perfectly on Froydvillain 1.5
Just one question : what is your clock&weather widget on the screenshots ?
I am terribly sorry, i think i've put an unsigned framework-res.apk file. I shall update soon.
My clock is Beautiful widgets, with the ANDRODena_Buff clock skin and EmotiSun Weather skin.
edit. I updated the framework-res.apk file, although i doubt it was unsigned, on a second note. Perhaps your download was corrupted. Redownload and let me know please
PS. Thanks for the nice comments guys.

My particular framework-res.apk is modified. It includes the circular battery mod, which not only changes png's, but also adds a few xml files. So yes it does indeed need to be signed. The apk itself cannot, but the .zip needs to be signed with test keys, allowing for the modified framework-res.apk to be extractable and allowing recovery to apply it.

Why were you reffering to the apk before then? Anyways doesn't matter
phone keeps rebooting at gmail.apk floyo 0.8
Looks great, I will be installing on my lunch break
One question - what difference does the LCD Density app make, and why choose the density you have ?
@shields - try to manually update the rest of the apk's. My phone rebooted as well on Gmail.apk. perhaps you have autokiller running or something. Choose Apply existing theme, select the xml file, and manually update the rest apk's
@furrypotato The difference LCD Density app does is that it makes the screen look like a higher resolution one. For example, i can fit 5x5 (columns x rows) instead of the classic 4x4 MDPI devices have. My setting is just something i have found to work fine, and dont have too many scale issues with my apps.
Installed it and loving it.
A very different theme for me to use that's a refreshing change
Thanks
Thanks for the nice comments.
Please feel free to propose any new features.
Whats the best method of adding custom icons ?
I only had a few minutes to look before I left for work but I took a look on Buuf website and found an icon I'd like to use for Tweetdeck. (Fauna #13)
Now I'm guessing I can amend the xml file in the zip in some way and place the icon.png file in folders like the others, but is there an easy way of doing it ?
I even bought beatiful widgets cos I love the themes so much
Oh, and I updated to the new Gmail last night and it's broken some of the gmail graphics such as notfication of emails.

There's no way of adding custom icons yourself. That's how i tried to do it as well. But it doesn't work. You have to create the APK from the beginning, and thats what i had to do. Took me nearly 3 days of non-stop work to remake it.
I, unlike the original creator, will intent to update the icons when asked. So let me know what icon you want for what app, give me the activity name if you have it and i will update it.
I haven't had an eye on the new gmail (as a matter of fact i didnt even know it existed). I will look at those on the weekend, as the following two days i'm taking 3 exams and my head's about to explode.
Let me know though.
Cool thanks.

I made a [Tutorial]How to decompile/recompile/Sign Whatsapp.apk :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21980621#post21980621 or HERE
I am quite busy at the moment but if you are patient,
i will find time to work on exclusive and unique mods for your daily chats
I helped a guy to go from the simple theming to real development of the apk >
he put out of his thread like a ****...
NOTE for GRATITUDE !

Regarding the message bubble design you requested. In order tho have light text on a dark bubble requires decompiling/recompiling the Whattsapp apk and editing the xmls to change the text color. I have tried that in the past, but with little success .. as Whattsapp doestnt seem to be able to recompile properly with the conventional decompiling methods. That is why you will see most mods have only black text on lighter bubbles. Not so easy to do an inverse design.

I am well aware of how to decompile and recompile apks.
The issue is with the Whattsapp apk recompiling after editing the Styles.xml within the res values folder. As many themers have found, there is an issue with recompiling WhatsApp apk after performing such edits. No one seems as yet able to successfully recompile the apk and alter the message bubble text color. You are doing well if you can change the text to inverse using ApkTool.
I myself prefer APK Manager than ApkTool as its command line structure is much better laid out and has more options.

Are you able to change the black bubble text to white (within the speech bubbles)....?
The trouble lays in that part of the modifications.
I have yet to see anyone successfully recompile the Whatsapp.apk (myself included) and have the changes (black text to white) actually work after finalization.
Many have tried editing both the Style.xml and Color.xml.. but the it just don't take after recompiling. The person who cracks this is going to make everyone happy.

Did you edit res>layout> 'conversation_text_row_right.xml' and 'conversation_text_row_left.xml ?
looks like they are the xmls.

My answer :
Wasnt you happy when i was posting all my posts off topic from the theming of your themes ?
Did i help you or i just imagine your words below ?
Without my help, you would never be able to go deeper in your own theming which comes now to a real development via xmls and smalis !
I wanted sincerely to help you but hey, like you said, you seem to be more proud or ashame for that... i still remember how you posted in my threads with rage and crap **** ...
dont count on me ever to help you and wrong if you think that we dont need help from someone else...

If you come by my thread and like my work, i ask nothing more than a little thanks for the effort.
If you dont, then just give me credits if you use it.
Thanks for reading, i wish you a great day ☼

I'm liking the changes made, not sure about the font.

Works for me and others.
Do you have place in your internal memory ( /system ? )
Did you set Permissions to all ?
[example]
I love your customizations Yorzua, the best around!
BTW, I installed a modded version of tweetdeck thanks to you Yorzua and I followed the same steps as you did and it worked flawlessly.
Downloaded apk to my Nexus S SD Card, then I open *Root Explorer* (you can use any file explorer with root capabilities: Script Manager - ES FIle Explorer - ROM Toolbox) changed mounting to writeable and moved the modded app to /system/app ..... then changed permissions to file so it reads: rw--r--r--
After doing so, I rebooted my phone open the app drawer and app was there, clicked on it and it works as it is supposed to.
Can you also make a BBMessenger look-a-like..??

Hi, great theme, I like it! But why is it necessary to install your app as system app & reboot? I tried other themes which can be used by just installing them. I'm just curious.

[MOD]Blue ICS/JB theme for orange GB parts[ALL ROMs][27/08/12-final]

PLEASE READ THE WHOLE OP!
Hey guys, I really like the holo theme of ICS/JB, but really hate that Google has not yet themed the orange GB parts of the framework... it's certainly an eyesore, even with some apps that use holo theme, there's some orange GB parts remaining.
This theme, changes the colour of remaining GB parts to blue holo style. I've tried to achieve the holo style as far as I could. :fingers-crossed:

here is HDPI folder all .9 files are drawn out use as reference shouldn't have any issues compiling
just heads up you have SDK these are located in SDK/platform/android-15/data/res with the res of the framework
also if you use apktools when you decompile the apk it will automatically put the lines in for you
also if you decompile any apk with apktools it will add the lines to .9 files automatically

you said you had problem with .9 files i was assuming you dint know how to do the lines..if dont wrong you might have issues that why i posted them..to give you a refrence
After i do the lines i used xUltimate-d9pc from command prompt in windows
then you are all set
if you want i can do. If you have the the lines it will take just a sec for xUltimate to fix
m1l4droid said:
I used apktool. decompiled the framework, edited png's with Photoshop, and when tried to compile, got ****load of errors. Those errors happen when you remove a PNG and don't remove the line for in public.xml, which is weird because I didn't remove anything. Just edited them.
Thanks for your help, I will send you the png's, I think I'll redo them, was not exactly satisfied with the ones I recreated, and will try to make it more ICS/JB style, not just recolored GB. Also I think I messed up some of those lines in .9.png files... But I am not home tomorrow and probably the day after tomorrow. But I'll jump on it as soon as I can and will send you the PNG's, if I couldn't get apktool to work.
Thanks again man.:good:

apktools can have issues when recompiling ICS framework probably same with JB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601511
I just pull res folder and edit images colors
Use draw9patch to do lines
then xUltimate then replace images manually drag/drop back into zip works just as good

[VRTHEME] Circular Battery with 1% Increments

Disclaimer: I cannot guarantee that this will work on your ROM. The ZIP only replaces stat_sys_battery* files in SystemUI.apk/res/drawable-hdpi; so if these files aren't present in your device, then simply flashing this theme will not do anything.

If you want to revert to your original icons, just flash the restore ZIP in /data/vrtheme-backup. (Hint: The ZIP is named after the date and time when you flashed the theme.)

Hello,
This is exactly the mod I have been looking for! (I just want white circle battery icon with 1% increments, and no other fancy icons)
The problem is, I have a Note 2 / N7105 with TW4.3 (4.4.2) So, I cannot flash the zip files posted.
Is it possible to make a tutorial for white circle battery with 1% increments? Maybe I can implement this mod in my rom...

Thanks.
In my N7105 (Stock, rooted, deodexed and deodexed), I have the following folders.
- res\drawable
- res\drawable-xhdpi, in which I have ic_qs_battery_0, ic_qs_battery_15, ic_qs_battery_28, etc.
So, I copied, from your rawfiles_circbatt.zip, ic_notify_clear to my drawable folder, and all the battery icons to my drawable-xhdpi folder after renaming them ic_qs_battery_0, ic_qs_battery_1, ic_qs_battery_2, etc.
Then, I tried to recompile, but I could not because I was getting errors.
So, I tried without your ic_notify_clear. I could recompile, but my battery did not change, obviously.
Then, I noticed your ic_notify_clear was not readable in my Notpad+, but was not in unix format. So, I saved in unix format, and I tried to recompile, but I could not because of errors.
Can you give me some advice? Don't I need smali editing? (When I added circle battery to 4.1.2, I copied two smali files, too.
Thank you in advance.

Oops, I forgot to add this info.
The xml in the zip is in binary form, e.g. has been encoded for use in APK files. So it's not readable by text editors such as Notepad++.
Although after decoding the XML, I don't think it's actually important for this theme I already removed it from the ZIP in the first post.
No, you don't need to edit smali files, although you do need to edit some XMLs if your SystemUI.apk isn't already set to use 1% battery.
If you want you can attach your SystemUI.apk here and I'll theme it for you.

Thank you very much for all you have done for me.
I downloaded and installed SystemUI.apk, but unfortunately, my battery icon did not change. (my battey icon remained a standard one.)
So, I copied your raw files to respective folders of the decompiled apk, and recompiled the apk. (it went without errors), but with the recompiled apk, my battery did not change either. (It remained a standard one.) But, I will keep these files preciously, as I am sure they will be very useful when I find what I am missing.
I had also done several tests, for instance, by changing ic_qs_battry.xml instead of stat_sys_battery.xml!!
I don't really understand. Whatever I do, my battery icon never changes and I never get a circular battery with percent!!
I succeeded when my N7105 was under 4.1.2!!
This one is really difficult..
Can you suggest what I can try?
