[MOD][THINK TANK] REMOVING Data Cap THROTTLE-UPDATED 1.06.2011 - Vibrant Android Development

METHOD #1: MODDING SERVICES.JAR
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9639621#post9639621
The thread LINK ABOVE kinda blew up just recently, but i have known that there is a way to beat the throttle cap as it works on my g1 with cm5 and hd2. both AOSP ROMs
as i stated before in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848783
REMOVING the data throttle was easy on the g1...just had to toggle 2g and then back to 3g to get back to normal speeds until you reboot.
THE PURPOSE of this thread is for others to POST their MODs and their experience. i will keep the first 2 or 3 post updated according to how well the thread goes. I HAVE contacted eugene and master about this.
I havent been able to get a permanent way to remove the thorrotle modding MACNUT 14 services.jar. Anyone is welcome add their input

Dont forget to hit THANKS for sino8r as well.
basically go to SETTINGS/WIRELESS and NETWORK/MOBILE NETWORKs/APN (Acess Points Names) and use these settings:
Name: kill throttle (or whatever you want)
APN: internet2.voicestream.com
Proxy: <not set>
Port: <not set>
Username: <not set>

MMS Port: <not set>
MCC: 310
MNC: 260

this method has worked for me. i will be working more on a more permanent services.jar MOD in the mean time.
its recommended that you ONLY use this APN when youre being throttle and then switch back to the original APN after your billing cycle ends.

dude if this work, i would love my vibrant more than i ever have, because tmobile slowed my speed on 3rd day cuz i was flying with my data, i could not believe i hit that much limit in 3 days untill i got a message u screwed! lol
EDIT:
is there a way to get the tzone working on vibrant? that be awesome!

Well the apn alternative is working for me..at least for now,but o think tmobile will catch on. The alternative is an old apn and they only apply the throttle in the current apn.

I just received the message today. I'm going to try this. A quick question I'm running Axura.
I have to modified my current APN or do I create a new APN with these settings??

its best to just make a new APN just in case you ever want to switch back. i advise to swtich back to the normal APN after your billing cycle ends.
but i have no idea how long the old apn will be left unthrottled...-_- i have a feeling tmobile will catch on. in the meantime i am working on a permanent solution using the services.jar MOD which just so happen to not work with touchwiz roms... AOSP roms like CM does take advantage of this MOD

I made this one for Axura yesterday...
DOWNLOAD
Maybe we can get a list of them going for every ROM..

Thought I was the only one that really got pissed off at the capping.. guess not.. thanks for opening this discussion in the vibrant section.. tried the services.jar method over in g2 threads ...but did not work... also I get capped every month but sometimes I do not lose my speeds.. I get the text, but still averaged around 2.7mb dl, 1.3 ul. Weird!!!

You guys are hitting your 5gig limit? Wha? I have an unlimited data plan, but I heard I'll be throttled down to dial up speeds if I reach a 5gig amount.
This is what you guys are talking about right?

Yes, most people get the unlimited plan but if they listen to pandora too much or browse the web too much then they might get throttled down to speeds lower then 2G
Quote from sino8r
Well, I think that is all... so have fun and get what you paid for which is UNLIMITED DATA (NOT THROTTLED CRAP THAT IS SLOWER THAN 2G!) T-Mobile has found a loophole with this throttle crap so they can still CLAIM it's unlimited! That may be technically true but it is utter crap and they know it. They are already being sued for this but I doubt anything will happen. This also meant for user who don't use their phone as a home internet connection. Those folks are the ones who made t-mobile do this. This is meant for people who use a normal amount of data like 10-15GB and aren't using mobile internet for torrents or useless crap. That is just a suggestion and obviously this can be used for anyone who wants to.

i thought the cap was 10 gigs. I used to hit 7 gigs a months all the time when i had tmobile and didn't get capped. I recently switched over to Simple Mobile and haven't been hit with a cap yet. Last month i hit 8 gigs with Simple mobile and was still getting my 3+ mbps.Im happy i jumped ship.
BTW, what kind of activity causes this? or does it mater. I use my data most on road trips, i turn the ipad on and watch netflix.

go to settings, wireless & networks, and uncheck Mobile network.. wait a moment then check the box... if you still have the same problem you might want to verify your APN settings are correct.
also more info would be helpful, are you an ATT vivid user? did you flash a different rom, etc..

[Q] Note and ATT 4G

Hey guys I just switched from captivate to Gnote, and trying to setup the data network here.
I had the original 3g plan with att, and I read on gsmarena that this phone supports LTE 700 which is what att is using right now.
So I am just wondering, is this phone capable of using the att 4g? do I need to get a new sim from them in order to get on the 4g network?
Thank you very much in advance!
LTE version or hspa version
did you buy the Korean Note that supports LTE or have a regular HSPA note. the regular note only supports the AT&T hspa and needs an 4g apn.

In short, GSMarena got it sorely wrong. The internationally available version of the Note, with the Exynos chipset, most certainly does not support LTE in any shape or form. It should also be mentioned that Verizon also uses 700MHZ LTE as well, but both AT&T and VZW use totally different blocks within that spectrum space anyway. So, I would find it strange that GSMarena may possibly claim that not only does the Note have support for 700MHZ LTE, but also every possible carrier block therein. Seems unlikely to me...
There are however carrier specific versions of the Note based off a completely different Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset designed to work on very specific LTE networks in other parts of Asia (mainly in Korea), and AT&T is rumored to have commissioned Samsung to build them their own specific LTE version of the Note as well. HOWEVER, I would fervently recommend AGAINST buying any kind of device commissioned and built specifically for any particular carrier. ALWAYS buy unlocked devices. By buying unlocked equipment, you are taking power away from the carrier that they would otherwise have over you when it comes to your consumer choice. Not to mention all the benefits and the freedoms you should enjoy by owning your own equipment, free of any carrier imposed limitations, bloatware *ahem*CarrierIQ*ahem*, and whatever other diabolical things carriers will inevitably do to our precious equipment.
Anyway, I'm getting side-tracked here...
To get your Note fully functional, and running optimally on AT&T, it's not quite as simple as just popping your SIM card in and off you go...
The three basic things you need to do are as follows:
1. Make sure you have the correct account provisioning.
2. Configure and use the correct APN('s).
3. Disable Fast Dormancy.
I'll cover these in more detail below, but first of all I need to clarify something: the Note supports 21mbit HSPA+, which if you want to call that 4G, OK fine. Personally I try to avoid marketing catch-phrases like "3G" and "4G" altogether, so henceforth I shall refer to the Note's mobile connectivity by what it actually is: HSPA+
Now, before you're able to fully take advantage of HSPA+, you'll need to make sure that your account is properly provisioned for that feature, otherwise you'll run into a virtual speed limit which will keep your device from reaching its full speed potential. So, in order to check that you have the correct provisioning on your account, you should call in to customer service and make sure you're on a proper 4G (not LTE 4G either!) plan. Ask them if you have the correct SOC code. In my case (grandfathered unlimited data user), my SOC code should be "HSDPB." If you're on a tiered plan, it'll be something else. Either way, you need to be on a 4G plan of some sort.
"Ok, how do I do that then?"
Easy. Go to you local store and get the IMEI from a similar Samsung device (from a connectivity standpoint anyway), like an Infuse 4G, or a non-LTE Galaxy S2. From the dialer, enter in *#06#, and the IMEI should show up. Make a note of that number (hehehe). You can probably find another IMEI on the internet, too, but either way you need that. When you call in to AT&T customer support, just tell the rep that you've upgraded your device to a *insert name of device from which you got the IMEI* that you bought on eBay or something, and you want to make sure that you're on the correct plan. Provide them that IMEI, and now your account should be provisioned for HSPA+ (YAY! WOO!).
Now that that's out of the way, you need to configure your APN or APN's if you're using more than one (this only usually applies if you're grandfathered into an older plan). Go to Settings => Wireless and network => Mobile networks => Access Point Names. From here, tap the menu button and select "New APN."
Populate the fields as follows (Case sensitive!):
Name: Doesn't matter, you can call this whatever you want.
APN: Phone
Proxy: <not set>
Port: <not set>
Username: <not set>
Password: <not set>
Server: <not set>
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMSC Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <none set>
APN type: internet + mms (if you're on a tiered plan) or just internet (if you're on a legacy grandfathered plan).
This APN info above is for achieving the highest possible speeds over HSPA+
The next APN generally offers slower data speeds, but depending on your area may not be any different in terms of speed after all. This is the old legacy Cingular APN, and you need to input these settings if you're on a grandfathered legacy plan, otherwise you may not be able to send/receive MMS properly.
Name: Doesn't matter, you can call this whatever you want.

Congratulations! You should have now successfully set up both your account and your APN's properly for making your Note fully functional on AT&T! You should now at the very least be able to get onto the internet and browse etc. Pat yourself on the back!
But wait! There's more!
You still have to disable a feature on your Note called Fast Dormancy. Fortunately, this is really quick and easy to do. But first, what the hell is that, and why do I have to disable it? Well without getting all technical, simply put, it's a feature which allows a device to very quickly switch from an idle data state to UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ and back to idle again, and generally work more efficiently, thus improving performance, and saving battery life. Problem is, in order for this feature to work, BOTH the device and the network that device is on need to support it. Unfortunately, AT&T does not currently support Fast Dormancy. As a result, by having fast dormancy enabled on your device, it'll have the complete opposite effect than what it was intended to have. Basically, your battery life will suck more, data connections will be erratic, slow, and unreliable, and you're basically wasting data overhead on a feature that, for AT&T, just doesn't exist. Disable it, and your Note will fly like it was intended.
To disable Fast Dormancy, from your dialer, enter in *#*#9900#*#*
This should pull up your SysDump menu. There, close to the bottom it should indicate your current Fast Dormancy state, enabled by default. Select that option, and it should indicate that Fast Dormancy is disabled. Exit and enjoy! Reboot the phone for good measure though. You generally don't have to, but sometimes it irons out any issues that may arise.
Hope this all helps! Enjoy your Note on AT&T!!
P.S. Hey Moderators!! Can we by any chance get this tutorial posted up as a sticky? Seems to be the best way to consolidate for AT&T users. Thanks!

Gotcha. Wouldn't surprise me that the pta APN wouldn't have worked, because if I'm not mistaken, I believe that's the LTE only APN anyway.
Great post !
Thx for the 4-1-1!!! This was great. However, one question, i got the skyrocket for Xmas, I put the sim in and used the 'pta' APN i found on this site. Is that OK? im gettting download speeds ~2 - 2.5. Is that what the non-LTE apn speeds are like? or should i change the IEMI number with ATT as you described and get a regular 4g plan (non LTE)? thx again

Honestly, I doubt you'll need to change your plan as such. However, I would avoid using the pta APN, mainly because it's monitored and regulated much more heavily than the other two I listed above. From what I read a few months ago on the Skyrocket forums, people on the pta APN were running into issues where they were getting throttled pretty badly, and in some cases, even if they weren't throttled, some websites were simply blocked outright. The solution was to fall back to the older APN's. Now I don't know if the issues with the pta APN have been fixed or not, but I would still avoid it on principle.
As for your average speeds on HSPA+, my understanding is that the Skyrocket falls back to 21mbit HSPA+ anyway when LTE is unavailable, so I would assume that your account provisions should already be set up to take full advantage of that on your Note. That being the case, yes, the speeds you are seeing are consistent with average/normal HSPA+ performance.
Feel free to read the link in my comment about 4 posts ago to understand a little more about what kinds of speeds to expect based on a number of environmental factors.
Thanks so much for this info. This needs a sticky!
After trying both APN's listed in this thread, im not able to fully receive MMS messages. I get a message with a download button, but the pic will not dl after touching the button.
I came from a skyrocket, in an LTE area, then used a cheap samsung gophone for a week (what misery!) while waiting on my GNote. I looked under message settings, and do have a retrival phone number, and checked "automatically download". Text mesaaging works fine. Any advice?

Get rid of all the MMS info in the wap.cingular APN, and set up a new APN with that info and call it "AT&T MMS" or something like that. When you set the type to MMS only, that APN will remain active always (no green button next to it) and you should receive MMS normally.

It looks like you forgot to populate the MMSC field. You've got MMS Proxy filled out, but not MMSC.

[Q] MAYBE 3G note fix

First I want to say I don't have a note so I can't confirm this myself. I was watching a review and the guy said he had hspa on his note. I poked around the site and saw some instructions on how to get a unlocked device working on tmo.
Can someone test this and post their findings? I would love a note on tmo!
Data and MMS APN Settings for Android on T-Mobile:
Check mobile network settings and reset the APN
From the Home screen, press the*Menu*key.
Touch*Settings.
Touch*Wireless & networks.*Depends on software version
Android 1.6:*Wireless Controls.
Garminfone:*Wireless Manager.
Behold II:*Phone Information.
Verify that the*Airplane Mode*or*Flight Mode*check box is cleared.
If you see a*Mobile Network*check box, verify it is selected.
Touch*Mobile Networks.
If you see the following check boxes, verify they are selected:
Data Enabled
Use Packet Data
Data Roaming*This will incur charges if you roam internationally, but it is required to receive data when roaming domestically.
Touch*Access Point Names*or*APNs.
Press the*Menu*key.
Touch*Reset to default.
Press the*Home*key.
Verify the person sending the message does*NOT*use dashes in the number or saved in contacts. For example: 5552223333 is ok, but not 555-222-3333.
Test your data connection and send a picture message (MMS) to see if it is working correctly.
Checking mobile network settings and resetting the APN resolves the majority of issues, and is much faster than verifying all settings.
Verify and update APN settings
ONLY if the above steps did not resolve the issue, then verify the APN settings:
From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
Touch Settings.
Touch Wireless & networks. Depends on software versionNote: This varies on different software versions.
Android 1.6: Wireless Controls.
Garminfone: Wireless Manager.
Behold II: Phone Information.
Touch Mobile Networks.
Touch Access Point Names or APNs.
If there is a T-Mobile APN, touch it. If not, press the Menu key, and touch New APN.
Verify and update the following settings for the Data APN:
Name: T-Mobile
APN: epc.tmobile.com
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: <Not set>
MMS port: <Not set>
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN type: <Not Set> OR Internet+MMS (depending on software version)
Press the Menu key.
Touch Save.
In the list of APNs, delete all others that may appear. If there is a FOTA APN, you may leave that one. To do this:
Touch the APN you want to delete.
Press the Menu key.
Touch Delete APN.
Verify that there is a circle next to the one remaining APN to show it is activated.
Perform a soft reset.
Test your data connection and send a picture message (MMS) to verify it is working correctly.
Nope.

Well on techno buffalo a review was posted of the note with a speed test of about 5, so I think it can connect to the hspa. Don't know if that connection can stay but I don't know.
Would love some info/thoughts on why this techie has 4g working.
Here's the video

Thank you for trying. AT&T works fine... T-Mobile has a different radio frequency ... its like trying to get an FM station on an AM channel. The guy in the video has AT&T which this phone is compatible with. The chip is able to support T-Mobile frequency but there is no driver to enable it... it just doesn't exist. The only way for this to work is if a dev (or Samsung) makes a driver for us. The other thread has a bounty of over $1000 now and nobody will do it still because it would take to long... so, until something changes, were stuck on edge or we have to move to AT&T. A side note; I bought a gophone sim card and paid the $50 unlimited for a moth and it worked perfectly so you could always just do that... but you can't port your number to a prepaid account.

you cant port a number to prepaid? even if its from another carrier? that sucks
I think you can on Straight Talk. No idea how good or bad the service is though.

SOLVED: AT&T terrible speedtest results (fixed mine)

I've seen some AT&T customers complain about terrible speeds and latency when doing speed tests. I too had this issue. Before the fix, I was getting about 20 kbps downstream and 400+ latency. After, I'm getting 6+ mbps and 80-120 latency. I fixed mine by adding a new APN with these settings. To change them, go to SETTINGS -> MORE... -> MOBILE NETWORKS -> ACCESS POINT NAMES. From here, either select the existing one or click the menu key to create a new one. Also, if you create a new one, make sure to select it after you're done making it. (you have to tap the radio to select it because tapping the name will edit it but NOT select it).
The blank ones are blank/unspecified. You probably only need to change APN and APN type (the other shown values were already like this on mine). For APN type, those are commas separating the terms. I posted a link to 3 shared screenshots so you can see what it should look like.

Do you get H+ insted H?? if u dont mind can you check in Settings, about phone and Status. in mobile network type HSPA:10 or HSPA+:15????
Didn't work for me (data gets disabled), however the only APN settings that have worked so far are the stock ones with wap.cingular.com. I have tried numerous other ones to no avail..

Thanks..I honestly didn't think there was a difference between the LTE and non-LTE plans at AT&T. But my dad is in charge of the plan, so maybe I am missing something.
I'm using the same Stock AT&T PTA apn I've used since the Infuse 4g and it works perfect. Stock APN I couldn't even get 20kbps most of the time. Now I can at least get 5.7 (about what I'm used to in my area).

I'm using the pta APN since I came from an LTE phone so my sim is provisioned for it. I usually got about 8-9mbps down in this location when on my sgs3 so if these speeds stick and improve I'm quite happy. Obviously uploads are the biggest hit but not too worried about that

It wouldn't work for me with the default WAP.Cingular APN. As soon as I changed it to the hspa+ one, speed test worked.
For this of you on the pta APN, does your MMS work? If so, do you still have the WAP.Cingular APN in the list (just not checked)? Or is the pta APN the only one listed?
I too have my Sim provisioned for lte, but if I use the pta APN, I get great data speeds, but no MMS. Thanks.

Many thanks for posting this! My internet donwload speeds went from .001 MBPS download to 2.97MBPS. I hate to say this, but it still felt snappy even at .001 MBPS. My Galaxy S2 was so slow to process websites.
solved minus mms......
I get faster speeds with the new APN, but I can't get H+ in areas where is was able to get it with my S3. Anyone have a solution?
thanks for this!
Posted this on another similar thread. Worked for me. It's the Cingular.WAP APN but slightly different.
"Anybody still having issues with att H+ speeds try the APN settings from this link
http://nerdynerdnerdz.com/blog/2011/07/23/att-apn-mms-settings-android/
My speed increased by 600% when I switched to this, from barely 1Mbps to 6+Mbps. I also can run the speed test app now whereas before I could not."

I came across this topic on rootzwiki a while back and it's helped me a few times. Obviously it's for ATT only.

not receiving some SMS & MMS on T-Mobile

Have you guys had any problems like this? I don't receive some text messages & group messages. It has been a problem that I haven't noticed until recently. People have told me they've sent a message & I never received them. They wonder why I don't text back. I have tried everything. I keep changing radios & factory resets along with checking apn's. Can it be a defective device or? Thanks in advance

Are you using LMY47M or another build variant?
also, make sure your whole apn is right. misplacing one letter will make it wrong.

I've had this issue with delayed texting too.
Turn off enhanced voice lte.
I think T-mobile is working on towers around my area so I had to disable voice lte for now until things smooth over
@grinchyboy
Change the APNs to what simms said. It will work. If you are having issues afterwards, remove all the APNs but the T-Mobile one.

Have been having these problems for a while now and couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.
and of course TMO Reps didn't know anything either. So I'm crossing my fingers while I try this out.
Thanks in advance !! :good:
This was happening to me constantly no matter what I did to the APN. I found another thread on this topic and one of the recommendations was to delete all other APN's but fast.t-mobile.com. I haven't missed a text since. That was about a month ago. I'm on LMY47M stock rooted unencrypted.

This is useful. I have two Nexus 6's -- one (the significant other's phone) has the text problem and one (mine) doesn't. I'll try this and report back.
I am on the same stock build. I can send MMS on wifi or on cellular, tmobile, but I cannot receive. My settings are the same as shown as the pic above a few posts. Previously, on Temesak, and this was not an issue. I am planning on going to the M build soon, though...

Nope, I got service and like I said, I had no issues on a custom ROM, but on stock...looks like it is a well known bug that affects random devices...

I'm currently battling T-Mobile with this issue myself. My phone is completely stock, I've been having the issue since around March when 5.1 dropped. I've never had this problem in 3 years, until 5.1. At times I get messages hours or days later, sometimes I don't get them at all. Sometimes I get them multiple times. I contacted TMo, they said all of my messages are being transmitted over WiFi, which isn't the case since I use the unlimited 4G everywhere I go, I don't even turn my WiFi on. So their answer was to replace my phone, since that wasn't right. I get the replacement N6, and ask them if the messages are being transmitted over WiFi; Yep! So then I realize that TMo has no clue what's going on. The next day after getting the replacement device, I get 12 messages in the same second from 4 different people. Some of them were sent 6 hours earlier in the day. I let T-Mobile know this isn't the fix, they send me to get a new SIM card.
It's been 2 days now on the new SIM, 3 days on the new N6. So far, we're doing good, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
I just found out i cant send or receive pics at all, get not sent, tried adding an apn, click save, and it's not there. I remember fighting with MMS on the nexus 5, if i have to do it again on this phone it's gone.
