[Q] Multiple Captivate problems - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today I turned off my Captivate for the first time in a couple days. When I turned it back on, it went through the ATT and Galaxy S animations, then remained at a black screen. It then vibrated on semi-regular intervals, in triplets, kind of like when an app force closes. I went to recovery mode and deleted user data, so now the phone boots into android. It starts with the setting up the phone tutorial, but whenever I get past the Google Location Services page the PhoneSetupWizard crashes then restarts. I cannot seem to get by this into the rest of the OS.
Possible cause: I was messing with a settings database a few days ago to try and enable side-loading. For some reason I feel like I may have accidentally deleted that whole .db file, which is obviously a problem.
What would be the best thing to do so I can get back to using my phone normally again? Would it be easiest to flash a new rom?

Flash stock using odin

Alternatly, install any custom rom as an update.zip, or install clockwork recovery zip and install any custom rom zip file.

Thanks I'll probably go the custom rom route. And do you know why the phone setup wizard app would continually crash? Is it possible that clearing user data through the android recovery menu deleted part of it, stopping the phone from functioning? If so, it makes android recovery rather useless. Installing clockwork recovery would be a good choice.

VZW: Force closes every app I try to open!

As it sounds in the title. I am helping a friend out with his Tab. I have tried various ROMS, but the issue still remains and that is, the Tab loads from a restart, every app force closes. I mean every app. I can go into the drawer click on an app, and it force closes before it even opens. I am at a loss. I have an Android phone but this one has me stumped. Any thoughts?

Have you done a full factory wipe to try starting from scratch? Found the stock rom and flashed that? Let us know what steps you've taken and we can probably help you get your friend up and running again.
I have done a factory wipe. I booted into recovery, wipe data/factory reset as well as wipe the cache partition. It also seems to reset the settings every time the Tab is rebooted. Should it affect it if the Tablet is not connected to any service? He is just using it as a side gadget. He hooks it up to wifi occasionally, but that's about it.
I would download a good stock carrier rom and kernel for whatever version he has (vzw sprint...whatever) and set it back to as it shipped from carrier. Maybe a system file is shot.

I flashed to a stock VZW rom, and no dice. When it reboots, all of the apps force close either at startup or when they are pressed. This is ridiculous!
I used this ROM
When I flashed it back to stock, the Setup Wizard keeps force closing. So now I can't even get to the homescreen or even the activate screen to bypass activation.
Are you flashing through recovery or using odin? That would be my advice, get a stock tar and odin

try flashing a kernel with clockwork. then flash whatever rom. and do wipe data, wipe cache, and then go into advanced, and wipe the dalvik cache.
Any thoughts on which one?
I know there have been other threads relating to this. It will never do a full reset. It always recovers to a previous image.
Odin with a stock tar

I have done a flash using the stock rom. The issue that it is having, is that everytime I reboot the Tab, I ALWAYS have to start from scratch. The ROM changes when I flash, but all of the previous users info is still there. I go in to app management remove every 3rd party app I can find, any personal data (i.e. google accounts, messages etc.), but when I reboot the Tab, ALL of the info that I just deleted is back on device. After just a simple reboot. I tried just installing CWM but superuser keeps force closing so I can never boot into CWM recovery. Any of the kernels that I can find no longer have valid links, does any one have a kernel available. Very frustrating! I have used both Odin and Heimdall.

[Q] Help! bricked + corrupt system?

I've been looking all over this site but I can't find anything. I suppose that it's partly because I'm not sure about the problem myself.
A couple of months back (maybe more) I upgraded to the ICS infinitum rom (blue version) with midnight kernel. It was great - the phone worked fine. Well I'm exaggerating, it ****ed up every once in a while. Programs would automatically shut down and it would get really slow after a while. But all in all it wasn't bad, and it was stable enough for me most of the time....
Then, last Thursday everything seemed to go apart, every program on the phone was shutting down. So I thought I'll just restart and it will be fine. When I did, the phone did not come back on. the kernel would load and then it was stuck on the start-up animation in infinite loops.
Now, to be frank, this isn't the first time this has happened. So I didn't panic. Last time I just used the CMW recovery to re-install the kernel and the rom (I keep the files on the sd card). But this time, I wanted to try to avoid the factory wipe for as long as I could, and try finding a different option, knowing that if all else fails, I have something to revert back to.
Then I did the mistake of deleting the init.d file without re-installing anything. I wanted to, but accidentally clicked on the 'reboot now' option. And then all went to ****. The kernel didn't load. I went to recovery and it couldn't mount the sd card so I couldn't re-install it.
I tried flashing a new kernel using odin, and it did get me a bit better: my CWM recovery can read the sd. However, I still can't mount the system. Even worse, when I get to the infinitum zip roms and re-installing it brings up the status 7 error (which, after searching, seems to come up for different reasons for each person)
Despite installing a new kernel, when I reboot the phone now it doesn't load the kernel anymore, it just stays stuck on the welcome screen. I tried using the recovery to re-install a different kernel, it worked, but the phone still won't start - it now automatically skips to the recovery mode. I don't know if I should try flashing a rom through odin, and I'm too afraid to try anything at all now...
Can anyone help me? Is there any way to restore the init.d file or maybe that has nothing to do with my problem?

I suggest flash 3-file GB rom via odin with ticked re-partirion and phone bootloaderupdate.
First of all init.d has nothing to do with the boot of kernel and ROM itself. It's just like autostart in Windows, so if it's missing it shouldn't cause problems.
My solution is to flash a complete stock Gingerbread ROM using Odin. You can get them at sammobile.com. Then afterwards flash a custom kernel and then whatever you like.

Solved - Locked Boot Screen, Unable To Access Custom Recovery Image.

Very noobish issue. Rooted, unlocked bootloader on Atrix HD. Set up SafeStrap as recovery. Everything checked and working. After letting SafeStrap install Cyan 10.3 and rebooting, phone entered CyanogenMod boot screen and become stuck for an hour. Realized that I forgot to reset and wipe all stock settings and cache (yes, I know that should have been obvious step). Figured I could just go into SafeStrap and make the quick fix.
Seems that I'm unable to enter my custom recovery, instead I'm lead to the familiar bricked android stock recovery. No options to access stock rom (assuming it was deleted during install or lost, etc). Tried installing a different recovery, but fastboot on PC is unable to find device. Help at this point is very much appreciated, either to do any of the following:
1. Somehow access SafeStrap again (assuming that it wasn't wiped aswell) so I can clear stock settings and cache, get Cyan 10.3 going properly.
2. Instructions/links to another method to otherwise forcibly delete stock settings and cache (please keep in mind, fastboot is currently unable to find device).
3. Otherwise completely clear phone of EVERYTHING, then reinstal stock recovery and or/stock ROM so I can give up on flashing custom and stick with stock.
*Update:
Was finally able to get phone into AP Fastboot Flahsh Mode. My computer itself can't see the phone, but device manager shows it as "Fastboot QINARA S" and I'm able get a response through my PC's end of flashboot.
Tried using RSD lite to install a stock ROM, but no success since the phone isn't off and can't be turned off without trying to go into another Boot Loop. Also tried installing a new recovery through fastboot, but I keep getting the response, "(Bootloader) variable not supported."
At this point, I'd be really happy if I could get the proper commands to wipe and factory reset my phone while in fastboot. At least then I'd have Cyan. I could try installing stock if it continued to glitch.
Update Motorola drivers on your computer and check threads for fastboot files from skeevydude.

Well safestrap is for use with locked bootloaders so there lies your problem. Maybe you can make a factory cable or buy one to put your phone into fastboot so you can flash stock through rsd.

The error is from using the wrong fastboot executable. Look at post 5. If you get a stickybit error, search our general forums for "stickybit" and you'll find that fix.

With a bit of creativitity one could use SSR to dual boot Holo Blur and Batakang....or two custom 4.3's that use the same kernel....PAC + Carbon both with arrrghhh's kernel.....Only problem is ya can't be a noob at all if ya do it.
Solved issue...somehow.
Used method shown in link below to install stock recovery image since Safety Strap was apparently deleted/wiped/banished?
(can't link, still noob poster. Just search, "[Guide] How to flash back to Stock Rom - chacha. Please Sticky This !", should be the first result.)
After installing stock recovery, was able to go to the standard dead android screen, but after punching the volume buttons randomly, the option menu for stock recovery opened. Was able to factory reset and wipe cache, then properly reboot. Cyanogenmod finally got out of it's BootLoop, and everything seems to be running fine. Flashed a non-official CWM (no offical CWM or Twrp avaliable for Atric HD) and got Gapps. Phone is finally running fine.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lingering issues worth mentioning incase there are obvious fixes.
.Cyan likes to crash whenever running programs for the first time or doing do much activity in a short amount of time (I suspect the cache has something to do with the cleared cache since revisiting apps doesn't cause crashes as often). If it persists, I'll probably just back up and look for a more stable rom.
.All notification lights are white, except the battery notification lights, despite me changing the colors and/or allowing apps to use their own light settings.
When you're at the "dead Android" screen pressing Vol Down + Power pushes it into recovery, iirc - might seem random but there's a purpose behind it.

Hi, I am having the same issue you had... how the heck were you able to get back into stock recovery? Every time I try my phone just reboots and gets stuck again. I cant even turn off my phone with out it rebooting. I have read your posts and followed that other forum you mentioned but if I cannot boot into recovery and if my computer cant see my phone it wont work. Please help when you get a chance.

Stuck in an odd bootloop, can't get out of it (SGH-T599N)

Hello all. I have been in the Android root community for a little over three years, and even after tinkering with the various devices I've owned since, I cannot get my T599N to come out of its current bootloop.
A background: I had been checking some things in my settings app (running stock, rooted), and I ended up just force closing the settings app to get out of it quickly. Well, this action deleted all of my text messages, and later on it removed my notification bar and made my wallpaper go black. I ended up booting into recovery mode to try and clear the cache. After it cleared, I rebooted, and bam, the bootloop started.
Now, here's what's interesting. The phone is in a bootloop where it displays the first boot message (SGHT599N Galaxy Exhibit or whatever), and then it tries to boot into cwm recovery, displays the loading screen for that for 2 seconds, and just reboots again. I've tried installing a stock rom from ODIN with no success. The rom apparently loads onto the device but it's still in the bootloop. After this, I tried to install philz recovery to try to install a zipped rom to get the device to somehow boot. I tried to factory reset it for installing purposes, and it just reboots. The device will literally clear everything but /data, so that makes me think that it may be a file system problem. I really need to get it to work, as I am out of a phone right now.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried everything I know.

Recovery mode and Root issues after stock flash

Hello all before I describe my issue lemme tell you how I got there.
First of all, new phone, couldn't install pixelexperience and flashing stock android was being a pain with all methods (read not working), only managed to install stock android with pitch black recovery.
After a while it auto updated to android 9 and I started having wifi issues that people told me were android's fault so I waited for an update. Update came but android was unable to install it, giving errors after errors every time it downloaded the update.
My solution to all of this was to flash another rom, either stock or custom, and pray it works. It was scheduled to happen in 2 days, when I had free time.
Today, when trying to change the permission for a text file for an app from read only to write, some random process crashed, and it triggered a crashing cascade, including the settings app, homescreen launcher, etc until the phone restarted and got stuck in TWRP logo screen.
No key press, combination, resets, etc would fix it. So I got into fastboot and tried a few things with no luck. Flash stock rom again and phone seemed to be working.
Magisk manager couldn't install magisk and root the phone so I went into stock recovery/twrp and every time I did it I got a black screen message saying something like this:
"Your phone/system is corrupt and won't boot ever again *evil laugh*. Oh btw, go to this link in another device to cry more"
and the link redirects to a google page with some non-useful info.
So here I am, unable to root, unable to go into recovery, phone boots though. I force-stoped updates for a while, as android 9 wifi issues were terrible, and I don't know how to proceed.
Do I flash a stock image again, a custom one, try another rooting method?
I don't want to brick a 6month old phone, really sucks.
Btw, is there a reliable way to back up everything in the phone ?(not only google stuff, but app configs and files/folders) Long time ago I read something about Titanium backup but never looked into it further and now with this crash that lost me everything I wanna prepare for the future.
Thanks for all the help and for reading my boring story.
Even I am facing same problem.. In my case my phone is rooted and I cnt flash TWRP and I cnt get into fastboot mode.. I alwys endup with black screen..
