Tasker Help - Desire HD Themes and Apps

Hi all
I just got tasker. I want to know if it is possible to turn 2g only on when I enter a certain location.
From what I understand I set location and then assign the task to switch to 2g. I can not find a 2g option though.
Hope that makes sense.

I had a similar issue, I wanted 2G on when wifi wasn't connected and 3G on if wifi wasn't connected and I launched a specific application, for example Browser, Maps or the Market.
First things first, it is possible you will need a couple of things though, which are as follows -
CM 6.1 (or possibly another custom ROM)
Toggle 2G
Toggle 2G Plug-in
(both toggles are available from the Market, they're the ones made by The Master Baron)
The reason for needing CM6.1 is because both the apps have been signed using the CM6 platform.
Once you'vev got those installed its pretty easy to set up. There's just one slight problem and its this - when switching from 3G to 2G and vice versa, the Radio disconnects, so you lose not only your data signal, but ALL signal (if only for a few seconds).
If you've got CM6.1 and don't mind the loss of signal I can give you some more info on setting it up.

Thanks for the reply.
Was on cyanogen but just moved back to sense with leedroid. Anyway to do it with sense based rom?

It might work on a custom rom, best way to check is to try to download it from the market. If it installs, great if not then you'll need to use a rom that uses the same signing method as cyanogen. failing that, I think there's an unsigned version here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739530. You might be able to get the rom developer to sign it for you.

Wifi and 3g icons at the same time?

I noticed that my captivate will often show both the wifi icon and 3g icon in my screen at the same time. I am using wifi to post this but 3g still shows up. This never happened in my nexus one or milestone. This also happens on multiple wifi networks for me. Any ideas?

Some apps use your 3G connection to get a rough fix on your location (Beautiful widgets "Beautiful home" or weather bug) there's a lot more. You can usually turn that off and just put in your zipcode. I could be wrong, just a shot in the dark.
I get this too

This doesn't seem right to me. I don't get why it would have both, there is no reason for it. If I reboot my phone, it will just show one or the other but over time it creeps back to showing both. I think its a software problem.
I am also wondering about the wifi. How do you know it's using wifi instead of 3g? Does it automatically switch over to wifi whenever it connects to one?

Thats the thing, I have seen it say I am on wifi but it still shows the 3G indicator and will show 3G activity (the activity arrows on the 3G icon light up).

It might be because you have no apps trying to find your location all the time. That's why some people have 3g on sometimes with their wifi on and some don't.

Well I wish I knew what that was then, because I do have Beautiful Widgets but I also have always had geolocation disabled and have my zip code set in it.
My husband's captivate will show both wifi and 3G when he opens google maps and the only way to get ride of the 3G is to restart the phone.
I'm having the same issue and using "my settings" to disable 3G use while using wifi. Being that I'm on the very limited data plan, I'd rather not have 3G being used when it doesn't have to be. So, if there are some programs that are forcing access to 3G when I'm on wireless, I'd like to know if there's an app or somesuch that will track which programs are accessing this so I don't have to worry about changing settings all of the time?
Hello everyyone. Ive only been using this phone and android since yesterday afternoon. I played with the phone very extensively yesterday and never saw the 3g while i was on wifi and then last night i applied the gps "fix" do you think that could of caused it to show. did all who is having this problem apply the gps fix ?
I believe using a push syncing service like exchange will cause this. on my windows mobile phones exchange wouldn't work over wifi.
Hmm is the default mail app an exchange like server ? So I should pull my info from that one and soley use the gmail app?

My problem showed up after this as well, but I can't imagine that would be the cause of it...
I'm seeing both Wifi and 3G on as well. Oddly enough, only Wifi seems to be on after it sits for a night (both charging and just unplugged). As soon as I disabled Wifi, 3G came back on, but after reenabling Wifi, the 3G stayed on.
As far as I can tell with 3G Watchdog, it's not using 3G when they're both on, but I'm worried that battery life is impacted by having them both on. I'm assuming this isn't normal behavior then.
FYI, I also applied the GPS fix, but I think I was seeing them both on even before I did that.
I get this as well, even when not using maps. I noticed it before I did the gps fix.
I do use gmail app which uses push, but still WIFI should always take over once connected. I noticed though that on the 3G icon the upload/download arrows are grey, not white or red (the transmit/receive colors).
I was concerned at first but I installed the AT&T app and I don't have a lot of data usage. I think its a bug.
I had both icons as well for a couple of days while in a wifi area. Messed with the gps settings again today and I'm back to wifi only icon. Didn't even reboot.

Tasker (or Locale / SetProfiles): Automatically switch to 2G only

Goal: Automatically switch to Use only 2G networks without opening Mobile Networks Settings dialog and checking the box manually
I know that this is not possible on stock, but is there any way to accomplish this for root users or with any of the mentioned apps or otherwise:
I do not want to disable APN, and I've already used APNdroid to much dismay. There is a bug for Nexus One users when restoring APN settings that leaves mobile data disabled.
I've used the apps mentioned in the thread title to automate my phones settings (ringer volume, GPS on/off, bluetooth on when phone ringing, data syncing, etc.), and now I simply want to disable 3G radio connection whenever certain conditions are met and have my network type as "GSM only"
I've searched through different forums here and sorted through a litany of Google search results, so please no lmgtfy because "2G only" returns no results in this section and no relevant results elsewhere; "2g only auto" nothing; "2g only automatic" nothing, but you can flame if you post a solution

If you don't mind me asking - what is the reason for it? When you switch WiFi on, the data is turned off anyway. So why?

Yes, when your device is connected to WiFi the GPRS service for data is disabled. However, the 3G band radio in your phone is still being used which consumes more power than the global GSM band radio that is used when connected to the EDGE network type. This is always true whether you are connected to WiFi or not. (correct me if I'm wrong)
Regardless, the answer to this would help a lot of android users. This is not specifically tailored for me, because the entire OP relates to battery performance which should be an important issue for all Nexus One users. If this task could be automated it would dramatically improve battery performance during off-peak use (nighttime, work, meetings, etc.) by improving execution and eliminating forgetfulness. Automating this adds to the user experience and would just make your phone that much more enjoyable, period.
I'm simply amazed that I can't find a resolution to accomplishing this.

The cellular standby / talk time power doesn't vary much between GSM and UMTS, the difference is less than ~20% in both modes in case of Nexus, judging by official specs. I'll check your assumption that UMTS connectivity isn't dropped to GSM when WiFi connects (most probably correct), but the power gain isn't significant in places that have proper UMTS connectivity (which is not the case for the whole world, I know).
The easiest way I can think of would be to use SwitchPro widget, for example (or any other free widget that has the same functionality), and instead of pressing only "WiFi On" button, press 2 buttons - "WiFi On" and "2G/3G connection" (the same as pressing the "Use 2G networks only" checkbox).
I would suppose that such a plug-in or setting might be available for Locale/Profiles/etc.
2 things that I've found:
1) The connection indeed stays UMTS.
2) Android system prevents the programs from toggling 2G/3G mode, it's only allowed manually. The widgets I've seen only take you to the correct Settings submenu, but you have to click the checkbox yourself.
Thank you Jack_R1,
I appreciate the replies and the confirmation. That is the conlussion that I have been stuck with for a while. I had assumed that there may be a way to control this with superuser permissions.
I guess I'm going to have to dust off my Java, contact some app developers, and start exploring how to come up with a solution myself.
I apreciate your feedback.
You're welcome.
I suppose that this thread might be useful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736095
What you're looking for might also be one of the lower level system functions, requiring system permissions, not only root.
Might be worth contacting Cyanogen's team or Enomther, to make an option for it on ROM level and incorporate in the next AOSP-based ROMs.

Thanks again. That post helped. The settings are not accessible in the current framework. When I get enough time this week I think I can start on getting this fixed for root users. I will take your advice and will contact some of the masters here who would know the libraries well.
in addition, one scenario could be:
At home, I do have pretty poor 3G connection with my service provider, so I would like to switch when I am near my WiFi to 2G mode

I have the same desire as the op. It must be possible to do since one can easily toggle 2G/3G from the power control widget in cm6. Maybe if there was an intent that was published tasker should be able to launch an app with that intent to accomplish this.
on a recent trip overseas, I was presented with a very weird situation. I bought a local sim and got a 3g data plan which was 3gb of 3g data and 200mb of 2g data (dont ask i have no idea why they are different). When I plugged it in i could do 3g data no problem but if 3g was turned on i could not make or receive calls. so like the op I wanted an automated way of switching between 2g only and 3g
I was able to do it on my nexus one and tasker with
Toggle 2G/3G
hope this helps you

[REQ] Simple app that can reboot mobile network module

Hi everybody! Because of network issues of Nexus S, some people, when network crashes, need to reboot their devices to make mobile net work again. (hotrebood also works)
So can anyone write an app, that can reboot only radio module, just to make it reconnect to network? Me and thousands people will be so happy if someone genius can made this! Thanks!

The best work around I've found is to use NoBars (free app in the market) which switches your phone to airplane mode when no signal is found for a set amount of time and then checks for signal every so often (set by you). This prevents the radio from dying (the issue) and helps conserve battery when out of service areas by not constantly searching for signal. So far its been working great for me and my wife.

GPS still terrible on 2.3.4 sprint tab

First of all, yes I searched the forum, and google, and tho I might have missed something, I think I've tried most of the reccommendations out there (short of a custom rom because those are in short demand for the sprint tab.)
I did a wipe / odin to 24, updated to 28, then 2.3.4. Gps still sucked, so I flashed rooted 2.3.4 and tried 3 or 4 gps "fix" apps for this thing, none of which have made any difference. I can get gps but it takes FOREVER, usually around 5 minutes. Often it will find 6 or more satellites too, but just sit there and not lock on or whatever to any, then randomly it works. I've tried every combo of toggling gps, soft reset, and hard reset.
In texas I had the same problem on froyo, now I'm in Costa Rica... I'm assuming since gps stands for GLOBAL positioning sys that where I am shouldn't affect it. But its just SO darn slow ilby the time it starts working its useless.
and I test it outside on sunny days with open sky, so I know that's not the culprit. Nor ia it in a case when I try
Any thoughts or ideas at all would be MUCH appriciated as I really need to start using my tab for mapping.
Thanks!!!

I think you're doing it wrong son. Try these settings. In wireless and network, mobile networks, uncheck 3g data. In location and security, check both use wireless networks and use GPS satellites. I assume you are using wireless tether from phone to give tab internet. Turn wifi on obviously. You do have the modded wpa_supplicant file for ad hoc for the tab right? I tried timing myself after doing all those settings I said and how long with GPS tools app and Google maps to get a lock and it was immediate. This is coming from never have using the GPS since the complete back to stock with ea24 all the way up to rooted gb.
People are saying to put the tab into airplane mode. If you want to use the GPS or things like weather bug or radar now, you at least need to have location from network enabled for it to assist in finding your location. You're not pulling data from the tower, the tower is helping the apply to locate where you're at, along with the GPS. GPS alone and wifi didn't work for me. When I enabled the settings I told you about, the GPS apps immediately came to life and worked great.

I'm in costa rica with a cdma sprint tab, so 3g is always disabled, and because there is no service I disabled network location because I figured it couldn't get that data with no signal, and my location kept going to some random location around the world. And when I need gps I'm out far away from wifi hotspots too, so not worried about that setting I don't think.
Wifi hotspots only, no tethering, and I don't have the wpa supplicant file, but again no tethering so I'm assuming that is not nessicary.
And in Airplane mode it never gets a lock. At least on froyo it never would. I would turn airplane on then activate gps and it never ever found a satellite. I researched it and I thought in airplane the gps couldn't function until airplane mode was disabled again, even if gps toggled...
I appriciate your input, but I don't think its going to work given my circumstances.
Thanks!

[Q] Droid 4 + JB = Phone or Data - pick one?

I have a Droid 4 with stock 4.0.4 that works perfectly with Polish Orange operator (GSM). I tried to install some JB rom, but when I go to 4.1 or 4.2 I don't have any data connection. At first I thought it was a problem in some particular ROM, so I tried almost all 4.1/4.2 builds I could find on the internet. They all have different options, more or less, but I didn't get data connection on any of them.
The second try was to modify 'something' in build.prop. I had no idea how to start so I checked some tutorials and xda topics and I looked at any options that could be related to data connection. After many tries I started to think that it's just impossible, but then I got the setup with working data , unfortunately the phone application started to hang or FC on all phone connections.
The next thing I could do was to narrow it down. I tried some combinations of build.prop, apns-conf, restarts and wiping and I've found a single setting that changes everything - "telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice". It seems to work this way:
1. Just after the installation of any ROM the option is set to 1. You can make and receive calls and SMS's. Wifi, GPS, etc. works. But regardless of what network options I use, if it's LTE or just 2G GSM, what APNs I set, if I reboot or use airplane mode - there are no data at all.
2. When I change this setting to 0 and reboot I immediatelly get the data connection. I don't even need to set-up APN (In fact it works even with VZW default APN, and I'm on Orange PL). It works on 2G and 3G, on GSM and LTE, I get all networks from Edge to HSDPA. So the phone is able to get data connection. But when I try to make a call the phone app hangs, and when I receive one it FCs.
For both of those cases I tried many different configuration options, with reboots, wipes and so on, to make sure that connection depends on build.prop setting and not on anything else.
So at this point I know that the phone is able to do both connection types, but how to get them at the same time?
BTW: I know about using Google, forum search and so on, I tried to find any clue about resolving this on my own but now I'm just stuck. However I've found something that I didn't find anywhere else, so maybe with your help we'll find some solution .

I'm going to check this mod in more details and understand what it does, so I may get back with some more questions .
